Energy Sistem - Android Smart Tv Box [ROOT] - Android General

Hello everybody,
sorry if this is not the right place for this, but since I have under 10 posts & that I can't post new threads where this topic should go...well I'll put it here, and feel free to move it if needed.
After having used an HTC Desire for a while + an eepad transformer, and enjoying the various communities around android, I thought I would buy a Energy Sistem Android Smart Tv Box and it came two hours ago "not rooted".
After a quick search all over the web, I finally found something that worked to unroot the box !!
I am really sorry but I can't find the original thread that linked to that file. Anyway, here you go:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/y6weis
*not uploaded by me...
I do not take any credit for this, this script is from
Android ICS Root Unlocker 1.0 [GreekDev]
and it as simple as running a batch file !! AND IT WORKS !
Instructions:
1- Find the IP the box is running on (ex: 192.168.1.104)
2- open a command prompt and go to the folder where you unzipped "ICS Root Unlocker 1.0" (ex: cd c:\ICS Root Unlocker 1.0 for example)
3- Once in the folder, try a:
files\adb connect 192.168.1.104:5555
if it says connected then you're fine to continue
4- just run the "ICS_Root_Unlocker.bat" batch file from this same folder and you should be okay.
Enjoy, I hope it will help others...
and now, let's see what we can do with this
b0b0
* just in case: I had the firmware updated to FW_Android_4.0.3_10-09-2012_rev01 BEFORE rooting

Help with Energy Smart TV root on Win 8 RTM
First off all thanks for sharing your experience. I'm new to android since I always loved iOS but started thinking about android as a good alternative to the less innovative iOS/iPhone plattform. I have to say your post was the first i found after 2 months of research and I was really happy to know there was a way to root the Energy Smart TV Box. Unluckily i can't manage to root it and since I'm new to android I'm kind of stuck. I hope you can help or anybody else. Problem is:
1- I managed to install the usb drivers using the SDK manager and in task manager everything seem to be right but everytime i run the batch file i get an error in spanish ( my windows setting ) wich translation is kind of The system can't find the specified route.
2- I have tried to run adb commands and i have as result as follows
Daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037 *
Daemon started successfully
error: device offline
PS: Device is turned on, with all the propper options ticked on in settings ( developer access and unsigned apps... )
Any advice on what to try. Remember, I'm new to android so detailed explaination would be appreciated. Thanks in advance and greeting from Spain.

Mi respuesta primera: Un saludo de Sevilla
Ok let's see, here's what I would do (taking into account that you already activated the usb debugging):
1- Get the IP the box is running on (ex: 192.168.1.104)
2- open a command prompt and go to the folder where you unzipped "ICS Root Unlocker 1.0" (cd c:\ICS Root Unlocker 1.0 for example)
3- Once in the folder, try a:
files\adb connect 192.168.1.104:5555
if it says connected then you're fine to continue
4- just run the "ICS_Root_Unlocker.bat" batch file from this same folder and you should be okay.
If this doesn't work, then I would try to type the commands from the batch file line by line (but before starting the commands from the batch file, make sure to get the device connected OK -or similar- message first!) -> that's what I did myself and it definitely worked.
Keep us updated
hasta pronto

It worked for me
Thanks dude, it finally worked for me. I finally made it using adb connect comannd and then typing one by one all of the commands in the batch file. So thanks again and if you discover any custom rom, mods or tweaks, please share it. It would be appreciated. I'll do the same stuff.
PD: Gracias, seguí el hilo en inglés para no desvariar en el foro. Un saludo desde Gran Canaria.

Glad you got it working
No worries, I'll keep sharing what I find... but I'm just browsing the web for infos... I don't think I'll discover anything on my own
Next thing I'm trying to work out: cifs.ko to map samba shares on boot, this way the shares will show up in the Video and other sections

First off all, many thanks for the root tip, I will prove in the next few days.
I have another problem with this device. I installed another launcher (Go Launcher HD) and everything works fine, but if the original launcher don't runs, the USB ports don't work.
If I run the original launcher before running Go Launcher, so good, but if I run directly Go Launcher fails.
I've tried other launchers and always the same problem occurs. Until we run the launcher original usb ports not respond
Greetings from Spain and many thanks in advance

thanks for sharing that info... I don't know how to get this sorted though, since I'm not a dev let's hope someone helps
I hope more people will come here so we can discuss various improvements on that box
b0b0

Ok, thanks anyway

Hi, I just want to say thanks for the script, I've just rooted my Smart TV, all perfect.
Also, I want to confirm that, if you use another launcher instead of the default, if you reboot the machine your wifi wont work. Just use the other launcher and it'll start working again...
Just one more thing, you can install Flash 11 if you delete first flash 10 using Titanium Backup (or others). But I can't update the Youtube app, any ideas?
Thanks again!

Misc questions on this device
Hi,
The original repository for Android Root Unlock is on sourceforge.net (sorry I cannot post links)
I have a bluetooth keyboard (Rii Mini, but the bluetooth button in the prameters GUI has been removed.
I can see that the bluetooth service is running, but I cannot activate it since there is no button in the GUI.
Does anyone know how to add it again ?
Does anyone find if we can customize the apps shortcut on the main screen (add/remove some apps) ?
Thanks

If you install another launcher, you could add shortcut in the desktop screen.
Also, you could uninstall apps using Titanium Backup (root required)
Greetings

so i need to replace the launcher ?
how can I do that ? do I need to compile anything ?
thanks

some news... it seems that some people managed to flash this box with other firmwares...
ex:
http://androidforums.com/google-tv/...dmi-google-tv-box-arm-cortex-a9-firmware.html
Worth having a look... I'm trying to gather some infos... then I'll post here.

Well, i tried several firmwares from similar tv box. Ours is Amlogic chipset, known as Amlogic c03ref.
But since the last firmware update, i ca say that our set top box is the most software advanced, not mention Xios DS (c03ref too).
In the last firmware, we have audio passthrough, wich is activated under the "sound-> digital output -> raw" option. This is intended to use among an a/v player multichannel in order to get real 5.1 audio. But i didn't get working this option yet.
This smart tv box is plenty of possibilities.
cheers

@Sanjuanero: indeed, you're right.
I tried Stane's firmware, and it's not really adapted to our boxes.
-I don't have adb access to the box (no idea why)...
-I don't have root neither,
-wifi is not working,(stuck while trying to activate)
-and the TV app is missing...I tried to take it out of the official firmware but no luck...
-most keys of the remote like Web, App, Settings etc do not work... (I took the remote.conf file out of the official firmware)
anyway, once I flashed the latest v2 firmware from Energy Sistem, the box ended up doing what I was asking for: access to CIFS shares.
I now did a /sdcard/mount_shares.sh script containing:
Code:
#!/system/bin/sh
su -c "mkdir /mnt/cifs_mnt"
su -c "mkdir /mnt/cifs_mnt/d"
su -c "mkdir /mnt/cifs_mnt/e"
su -c "mkdir /mnt/sdcard/movies_on_b0b0"
su -c "mkdir /mnt/sdcard/mp3_on_b0b0"
su -c "mount -t cifs -o rw,noperm,user=\"YOUR_USERNAME\",password=\"YOUR_PASSWORD\" //192.168.1.4/d$ /mnt/cifs_mnt/d"
su -c "mount -t cifs -o rw,noperm,user=\"YOUR_USERNAME\",password=\"YOUR_PASSWORD\" //192.168.1.4/e$ /mnt/cifs_mnt/e"
su -c "mount -o bind /mnt/cifs_mnt/e/movies/ /mnt/sdcard/movies_on_b0b0"
su -c "mount -o bind /mnt/cifs_mnt/d/MP3/ /mnt/sdcard/mp3_on_b0b0"
and use Script Manager to run the script at boot.
Now, everytime my box starts, I can go into the Home movie icon (or music) and access my movies straight away by going into /sdcard/movies_on_b0b0
Wicked !
I hope it helps others,
b0b0

Just install another launcher from Play Store, as Go Launcher HD.
You don't have to compile anything, only install launcher and select it.

yes this works fine.
thanks a lot.

Now, I'm using Home Switcher app for easy switch on launchers.

hi
thanks for your feedback.
so to have go launcher and USB i need to start the original launcher first ?
home switcher can help, but what would be good is to automate the start of the original launcher and then the go launcher.
maybe with script manager ?

How to remove apps using adb
To me the best and free way to remove apps from your phone is via adb. Hopefully you have some familiarity with adb if not you should be good after reading this.
First open a command prompt and type
Code:
adb remount
this will allow you to do what we need to do if you have errors then you need flash one of the roms I provided.
then type
Code:
adb shell
cd /system/app
ls
this opens adb shell commands then opens the system directory and shows you whats in it. If you are using the deodexed rom you will have nothing but .apk files in there. But if you use the stock rom then you will have .apk and .odex files in there.
look through there and figure out what apks you want to delete and then type
Code:
rm whatever.*
replace whatever with the app you want to remove
for instance
Code:
rm googlevoice.*
then type
Code:
cd ..
cd ..
cd /data/data
pm uninstall com.googlevoice
this part here changes your directory to data/data and then it completes the uninstall. You may have to guess what the name is in data/data but usually it isn't that hard. Also you can't pm uninstall apps from data/data unless they have been removed from /system/app so don't be worried about removing the wrong thing.
check your phone and you should be good to go
I'm going to get one this week. Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaanks!

not to bring up a dead threaad....but the optimus v really needs a home here at xda.
i just rooted my first. i tried to use a windows program called "romtools" found on the interwebz. this didnt work, though. so...after a little more searching...i found this out. maybe the opt can put this up in first post?
easiest way to root and install super user: run super one click root to obtain adb shell root. then...run z4root. neither of these two methods work on their own but if you do in that order...you will have root and super user installed. from there, you can flash a recovery using android terminal emulator...if your old school like that. i did.
after that you can flash the stock virgin with Xionia kernel and bloatware removed. get setcpu..overclock it. whatever. door is open.
hope this helps! trying to get some thank you points on the board.
back again to try to keep this thread a little bit up to date til SOME1 NOTICES THAT THIS PHONE EXISTS.
for those having the "Cell standby" battery bug....
whats that? go to setting>about phone > battery usage> if cell standby is at anywhere near 50% or over...you have this bug. antenna constantly scans even with a connection...
plugg phone into charger. toggle airplane mode. unplugg. this will clear your battery stats and will properly connect you. check your setting to see if your usage goes down.
there also seems to be a problem wil gallery. the app opens but displays nothing. no albums or anythinng. its like it cant read the sdcard. only thing i can say to do is install a 3rd party pic viewer and trash 3d gallery.
hope this helps you guys.
Awesome, thanks for this. I currently have CM7 on my Optimus V, but for some reason I can't use any adb commands with it. I can with this. Sorry if this is the wrong place to post it, but I'm still a new member. Anyone know a way to get adb working?
hey did you guys ever figure out diag mode for the Optimus V? its not like the the other Optimus devices and ive tried every key combo my little brain could come up with....im trying 2 connect it 2 QPST or CDMA..

[HOW TO] Root Acer Aspire One D255 Netbook Dual Boot & Others

Rooting
You will need:
A source of Better Terminal Emulator.apk (3.38 works) (From now on called BTE)
A working android dual-boot
How to:
Somehow get BTE onto your netbook
Install it using the provided file manager. (DON'T WORRY THAT PACKAGE INSTALLER CRASHES. THAT IS NORMAL. JUST CLICK FORCE CLOSE AND PICK BTE FROM THE LAUCHER.)
There's no need to install the plugin, just click OK and open and close BTE until it opens a green text on white background.
Exit BTE for now and download busybox
Re-open bte and type cd /sdcard/downloads then cat busybox > /system/xbin/busybox
Get Root Explorer from somewhere and install it with file manager
Open it. Test whether busybox works by clicking the mount r/w button. If it changes, your netbook is rooted!
Installing Apps that give "application not installed" in the package installer
Get the app you want and find it in root explorer
Long click the APK and click copy
Right click > more > home
Click mount r/w at the top (MUST BE ROOTED AND HAVE BUSYBOX INSTALLED, SEE ABOVE)
Go to /data/app and click paste
Find your apk and long click and click rename. Name it com.publisher.appname
Long click on the apk and click permissions
Tick the 1st two boxes on the first row, the 1st one in the second row and the 1st. one on the third row.
Go to your launcher (I use GO Launcher EX) and see if it's installed. The app may still force close. If it has not installed, wait a while and see if it appears or try copying it to /system/app and back again

Help
Hi thanks for the guide I've come across a problem though. I've installed BTE and got to the stage
Re-open bte and type cd /sdcard/downloads then cat busybox > /system/xbin/busybo
But when I type in the second line it says that it cannot create the directory because it is read only.
Any thoughts on why it is doing this?
Thanks

Quinny899, thank you for writing this up. I just bought a Acer Aspire One D257 which dual boots into Android 2.3.1. I tried to follow your instructions but I ran into the same Read-only file system error as nunbean. I tried his solution but i don't seem to have adb, su permission, or applications>developer>usb debugging available to me.
Any suggestions? Have you had any luck hooking your D255 to another computer and running adb?
Thanks

I'm working on an apps2sd method.
You can move to /x-root/app or /sdcard/app (make the folders and move the app apk into it first)
The main code is:
ln -s /data/app/com.whatever.app.apk /x-root/app/com.whatever.app.apk
-or-
ln -s /data/app/com.whatever.app.apk /sdcard/app/com.whatever.app.apk

[HOWTO] Bluestacks for MAC OS X rooted [2012-10-09]

Hi all, who are interested in using Bluestacks (Bluestacks Mac alpha) rooted and writeable /system & /data!
If you havn't installed or used it before, the android app player Bluestacks alpha for MAc OS X is available here:
http://bluestacks.com/bstks_mac.html
The idea for rooting it came, when I read the thread of xRepinsSporx here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1571308. This is guiding tread for rooting Bluestacks for Windows.
So credits go to xRepinsSporx!
I've managed making full rooted Root.fs for the Bluestacks android app-player for MAC OS X.
The /system of bluestacks is rooted out of the box, but root-permissions are restricted.
So I've copied a new su file ('su.orig') and a symbolic link ('su') into /system/xbin. This was done under ubuntu-linux!
That works for me...
If you want try it, here is a
HOW TO:
(make sure, Bluestacks is not running!!!)
---Attention! this HOWTO is only useable on MAC OS X!---
I.
1. Download Root.fs_hacked.zip (rooted Root.fs)
II.
1. Unpack Root.fs_hacked.zip in a folder of your choice
2. In Finder-Menu go to "Go To'-cklick it once ; hold alt-key down for showing the user-library-folder;
Open Library-Folder; Go into the Folder Bluestacks App Player; Go into the Folder Android;
Rename the file Root.fs to Root.fs_backup (in case for having a backup!)
copy the unpacked Root.fs_hacked to here and rename it to Root.fs .
---- You have full rooted /system now! ----
3. Goto into Folder yourusername/Library/BlueStacks App Player/Runtime; make Alias For Bluestacks App Player.app;
Place this link where you want to (i.e. on Desktop or into the Launchbar);
Now you should activate personalized Home Launcher! (If you did not done it before)
I made it with Holo Launcher...
III.
1. Open Pulse in Bluestacks
2. Click an entry in Pulse; Click on Menu-Button, that goes to an WEBsite of an article; the hidden webBrowser of bluestack will open that;
in addressbar goto HoloLauncher (stable) download page http://hololauncher.com/download.aspx?t=STABLE and download and install it
3. Click on the colored Home-Button of Bluestacks and select Holo Launcher for ever.
Now you can install basic gapps for Bluestacks
IV.
1. open the web Browser
2. download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12364391/BluestackForMacApps/GoogleServicesFramework.apk; install it
3. download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12364391/BluestackForMacApps/OneTimeInitializer.apk; install it
4. download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12364391/BluestackForMacApps/SetupWizard.apk; install it
5. download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12364391/BluestackForMacApps/Talk.apk; install it
6. download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12364391/BluestackForMacApps/Vending.apk; install it
7. download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12364391/BluestackForMacApps/Gmail.apk; install it
6. download http://dl.dropbox.com/u/12364391/BluestackForMacApps/Maps.apk; install it
At last goto Settings->Accounts-> add your Google-Account
You did it! - Congrats
What is working:
- root is granted for apps an the fly (without the use of Superuser.apk - this APk isn't working but not needed!)
(test it with titanium backup and/or root explorer)
- fully read/writeable /system, /data, /data/data
(you can test it by starting a terminal session in bluestack; after starting terminal you are at the $-prompt right(?), enter $ su - and you are the #-prompt - so you are rooted)
If Titanium Backup or other apps don't see your installed apps, then you have to change permissions for /data as following:
open terminal session
and enter
Code:
su
chmod 755 /data
(thanx Jainyankee1993 for his reply!)
- Homelauncher of your choice
- Market
- Synching Gmail
- installing most of apps you can see in your market account
(working apps i.e. here: Root Explorer; Titanium Backup; Adaway; Clocksynch...)
What is not working:
Contacts and Calendar won't synch! (So i use the Google website for my calendar and contacts for the moment )
The colored home button loses his function. (For getting home button function you can load 'button svoir' from market)
The stuff published here is for educational purposes only!
All you do with your Bluestacks installation on your MAC is done at your own risk!
BTW: if your full rooted Bluestacks is running as it should, you can delete the preinstall Bluetstacks-Apps-Folder link from the Launchbar...
(atached 2 screenshots here.)

Can you please open a terminal session and enter
Code:
su
ls -l /
an try to post the output here?
I think I have used chmod for /data to change permisssions
you can try
Code:
su
chmod 755 /data
for a fast shot...

Wrote this post before you posted the bigger screenshot (sorry).
the permissions for /data are looking good.
So make a
'ls -l /data/data' and ls '-l /data/app' the must have the sam permission values like your /data - line
my old eyes can't read your output.
Can you please write the single line from output for the /data folder?
Have tested the chmod command once more.
You can enter the command
Code:
chmod 755 /data
... and TB should show all your apps, i think!

is chmod supposed to give me an output, because it isn't...

No, chmod returns without any output after setting permissions...
I'm pleased that it works for you.
(Will update the HowTo with the 'chmod' command for /data...)
You are right with the camera. The mic would also a nice gadget in using bluestacks...
But i don't think that bluestacks.com will build their emulator (Bluestacks App player) in this stage ...
So, who will try hacking the app player for using cam and mic?

First of all, thank you very much and you're a genius.
Second, I can't seem to log in with my Google account, I fill in all data and then after it loading for 1-2 min I get a message saying "Can't establish a reliable data connection to the server. This could be a temporary problem or your phone may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues, call Customer Care."
I've installed all the supplied apk (in the order they were mentioned) but nothing. Am I just a total n00b and forgot something or does this root not support the Market/Play store yet? I say Market because that's what the icon says on my Bluestacks, but that shouldn't be the problem because they're two different "apps" if I'm right.
Root.fs in use
Every time I tried to replace the root.fs file with the hacked root.fs, it says that it can't be completed because root.fs is in use. Please help!
When I do this and open up stacks it just crashes.
You can get contacts/calendar to sync by adding a corporate account under the contacts app. Then use use your gmail credentials and m.google.com as server.
There is no root.fs in /Users/<username>/Library/BlueStacks App Player/Android
There is root.sparsefs instead. is there any way to hack this?
Thanks for all
Best regards.
Need new root for Beta version
The Beta uses a different image format, "Root.sparsefs" containing two files "Map" and "Data", so it needs a new root.

[Q] FileMate Clear 7" T720 tablet

Does anyone know if Z4Root will work on this tablet? Thanks!
I've been looking for one for 3 days now, I tryed onclickroot and z4root or something like that,, cant find anything Anyone please help!!
I'm still waiting for my tablet to be delivered...I'm gonna try SuperOneClick (crosses fingers)
I got one of these for my daughter for xmas. I spent a few days trying to root it with no luck. I'm not intimately familiar with android (some unix experience), but I tried all the options I could find for rooting Allwinner a10 devices. At first I ran into problems with adb unable to recognize the device for most one-click methods. I downloaded the android tools and was able to connect with the included adb. After studying the scripts, they all use the "adb root" command to gain root access on the device and copy the necessary files. Unfortunately, this command fails using adb from the tools. At first I thought this was due to my adb version, but after doing some research I think it is actually due to the device kernel. I believe it requires reflashing or some exploit to be able to gain root. I was able to install root explorer and I can browse all the necessary directories but I can't modify or copy the necessary files into them. Busybox told me there was an older version installed, but wouldn't let me install a newer version (again I think due to the permissions). Also, superuser would say it installed but the su binary did not show up on the bin directory. As the necessary directories are all owned by root, I couldn't figure out a way to modify the permissions...
I wound up returning the FileMate and got a Lenovo IdeaTab. Got that rooted in no time.
sorry i never saw this post i've bought 2 of these and i rooted them,
i wish i could get a better build for them though, too many app crashes and the internet connectivity sucks
i used a method by Bin4ry called root with restore, v17 worked any ways i have the zip if you would like it

FileMate Clear T720
Thank you very much for being the only person ever to have posted in regards to this tablet. I just got mine for christmas and have been trying to get it rooted. I've tried a lot of those one-click methods, and I've even tried this Bin4ary method. but it just hangs up on "daemon started sucessfully*"
Can you please direct me to the filemate drivers (if needed)
also, I have usb debugging endable, allowing 3rd party (not secure) files enabled. and pulling my hair out (enabled).
Thanks again.
Also, I'm running windows 7 and 8, (((maybe i should try win7))) hmm. i'll get back to you on that. Anyhow, any advice would be greatly appreciated, since returning it doesn't sound very fun.

I laughed so hard. ok your going to have to install drivers by force,
first off do you happen to have android sdk installed? if you don't there is another way but its going to sound weird,
if you do have the android SDK installed:
1. go to your computer manager (by opening explorer, right click on the "computer" group on the left column and select manager)
2. look for any unrecognized item that appears, ( it will most likely be labeled "Clear" with a faded icon and a "?" sign on top
3. right click and choose "Update drivers", it will give you options, choose "Browse my computer for driver software", another option screen will show,
4. at the bottom of the window there will be an option that says "let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"
5. on the screen that appears there should be an option that says "ADB Interface", choose this
6. choose "Google, Inc.">"ADB Testing Interface version x.x.x.x" (I chose version 2.1.0.0)
that should do it next time you plug in the tablet try running ddms or open the cmd and type in "adb devices" (assuming you have adb installed) and it should show.
if this helps just hit the thanks button
[edit] I am running windows 8 btw [/edit]
ADB interface doesn't show up
Thank you very much for getting me farther, however I dont see ADB interface. I'm looking into it right now. I just re-installed the sdk drivers and will keep at it.
BTW, is it even worth doing this? the main reason I want to do it, is so i can connect my ps3 remote via bluetooth, and possibly a little overclocking. Have you had any luck OC it?
Thanks again Much appreciated:good:

open up SDK manager and go to Extras>"Google USB Drivers"
also install everything in the "Android 4.0 (API 14)" section, I have other options installed if this still doesn't work.
its worth it just for the extra stuff that root comes with like titanium backup, but you cant over clock, if you go any higher than 1200 MHz it will lock up and you have to force it to reset.

Rooted With Kingo
I just bought one of these cheap to play with and used Kingo to root it. Worked first time, no problem. Hope that helps is anyone is still trying to use these

As far as being unable to update binaries, try to find a custom recovery and install. From there, you can inject them via su-binary update.zip and bam!

That is the link for the Kingo site. The first time I saw it on here there was some question about whether it was safe becase it is not open source and used a Chinese SuperSu app. I felt safe using it on a tablet because I do no banking on it or anything, but the newest posts I have seen are that Kingo is safe. Hope that helps. And if you know where to find a custom recovery that will work with this app please let me know.

[Q] Root ZTE Valet Z665c

Does anyone have any information on how to root this phone?
It is a tracfone running Android 4.1 with 1ghz qualcomm cpu.
Thanks.
I'm also looking for someone who might have some pointers on how to root this phone or install KitKat apps from Nexus 5 dump!!!
I know it is a low end phone but there are lots of people in the Tracfone world who are now able to get Android phones and are NEW to the smartphone universe.
Thanks.
I'm thinking of buying this phone. As a low end Android, how does it hold up? And if you want to root it, try Bin4ry's root method here. Just be careful.
Tried Bin4ry on ZTE Valet but it failed to root
I've had the phone a couple of days so far and while I'm by no means a qualified reviewer of smartphones, I do like the ZTE Valet. I'm too cheap to pay the $70-100 USD/month for a post-paid service that I don't need.
After searching the forums and seeing that no one reported trying to root the phone, I took a brave pill and tried the Bin4ry method (v31). I got the same message that many users reported - after rebooting, it fails to mount and copy the necessary files. Both the new standard method and the old method failed. It did no apparent harm to the phone - just didn't work. Here's some details on the phone I have:
Android version 4.1.1
Kernel 3.4.0-perf [email protected]
Thanks for any ideas or advice.
I just picked one up at Kmart for $80 today and am checking things out, trying to see about rooting it. My Hisense Sero 7 Pro tab is rooted and running great with a DoPa custom ROM.
I also purchased one of these and am happy so far. I have a question on the magnetic and rotation sensor. They seem to show up as installed as ak8962 devices but apps like 'my android sensors' don't show any data being returned. are they just not actually installed?
thanks

The rotation of the device changes the screen from portrait to landscape and 'maps', 'Gas Buddy' seems to show the right direction for magnetic north. I haven't had much time to check yet. AAMF, I haven't activated or transferred my number to the 'phone' yet as am deciding if is a 'keeper'. So far, I think it is as I can use WiFi and 'turn off' mobile data by option. Now checking things like battery life in standby.. Haven't found an option to shut WiFi when screen is off like in my JB 4.2.1 and HC 3.1 devices. Only seem to be able to turn WiFi on or off or see an option for airplane mode.
I agree - the screen rotates (how - I don't know ) I would assume gas buddy is using GPS to find north.

I'm going to get my hands on the phone soon. I'll proceed to attempt to get a recovery or something compiled for it if I can. First, I'd have to dump the rom and kernel which might require root access, but we will see. Once we have a recovery we can port CyanogenMod over to it.
Also I think I know why it's crashing, but I can't be sure until I can test it out myself.

ZTE Valet Z665c - obtaining temporary root
After trying numerous root methods (Bin4ry, Framaroot, ...), I stumbled on a method of getting temporary root using Cydia Impactor. Cydia Impactor appears to be partially successful. First of all, please note that all credit goes to those involved with Cydia Impactor and the discovery of the original exploits (do a search if you want).
This method might seem a little convoluted, but it works reliably for me. Note that I use a Linux machine so you might have to adapt the steps to work on another platform.
Prerequisites:
1. Menu -> System settings -> Developer options -> USB debugging ->Enabled.
2. Menu -> System settings -> Developer options -> Stay awake ->Enabled (to keep the telnet session from going to sleep).
3. telnet (I am running on Ubuntu, but some sort of telnet program is needed).
4. Cydia Impactor
5. phone is connected to your wifi.
Steps:
1. Run the "Cydia Impactor" to "# drop SuperSU to /system/xbin/su". See what happens.
2. It failed for me giving an error related to not being able to remount /system or not being able to create /system/xbin/su.
3. In Cydia Impactor, run "# start telnetd as system on port 2222". You don't need to bother to telnet in. Just let it finish and then proceed to the next step.
4. In Cydia Impactor, run "# start telnetd as root on port 22". Let it finish.
5. Telnet into your phone from a terminal on your computer: "telnet 192.168.1.117 -l root 22". Note that the ip address is likely different on your network, e.g., 192.168.1.xxx.
6. If everything worked OK, you should be presented with a root prompt ("~ #"). I have busybox (obtained from the Bin4ry exploit download) that I adb pushed to /data/local/tmp. The command "/data/local/tmp/busybox whoami" tells me I am indeed root.
OK - now the bad news for me. I proceed to try to install su but remount fails. If I issue the command:
~ # mount -o rw,remount /system
~ #
A root prompt is returned with no error message suggesting that it successfully remounted /system. Woohoo! But a "mount" command (or cat /proc/mounts) says it is still "ro" or read only. Darn. Does it appear that ZTE has crippled the mount command in some way? Now the question is how to permanently install root? I have poked around and at least was able to make a backup to my sdcard using bzip2
This should at least help as a first step. Others including myself have posted elsewhere on this phone. At this point, I'm not willing to risk flashing anything. I'm a noob so I'm hoping someone who is more familiar with the permissions and that sort of thing can complete the root and post a solution.
Thanks.
Awesome!
These findings are great, I'd be willing to check this out soon. (Linux box is down do to hardware issue. ).
If we can obtain root the remounting issue can definitely be fixed. Also, does busybox have the premissions to run?
Try this:
Code:
mount | grep system
That will give you somewhere within the text the partition that is registered as /system . Then:
Code:
mount -o rw,remount [PARTITION-THAT-COMMAND-RETURNED-HERE-MINUS-BRACKETS] /system
See if that works. But anyways, if it doesn't it can still be rooted! (just temporarily, but it is no longer an 'unrootable' device)
Note: I am not responsible for what happens using those commands.
a little more info in response to your questions
Dear Unkn0wn0ne,
I had messed around with it and also tried something like you suggested, e.g.:
mount -o rw,remount,relatime,data=ordered -t ext4 /dev/block/mmcblk0p19 /system
Also tried it with the "-n" option to avoid a write to mtab although I don't remember seeing mtab while purusing the file system.
Hadn't noticed that busybox was available under /system/bin:
~ # ls -al /system/bin/busybox
-rwxr-xr-x 1 root shell 1075144 Jul 19 11:20 /system/bin/busybox
~ #
Could be that it has a more limited command set than the one I put in /data/local/tmp. A lot of the commands under /system/bin have a symbolic link to toolbox.
Note that the telnet connection needs to be made over wifi and not the one available over usb. I got the ip address from my router's client list.
Oh yes - thanks for the reminder. Forgot to include the disclaimer about harming the phone or voiding the warranty.
Hope it works out well for you. Glad to hear your encouraging remarks.
Awesome!
Alright so that didn't work. This guy over here has a suggestion (he has scene your thread): - I can't publish links so I'll pm the link to you.
Also if busybox is symbolically linked you'd have to tell it specifically to call to the busybox pushed over via adb to: /data/local/tmp/busybox and not the stock.
In this case: /data/loocal/tmp/busybox/mount
Also the disclaimer is a must. There will always be that person that tries to blame it on someone else.
Note: I am not responsible for whatever happens using the information provided in this post.

I attempted this myself on my Windows 8 machine. I had to enable telnet, but that was easy. I had to reararange the command to "telnet root 192.168.x.xxx:22" (xxx is my IP). It keeps giving me the error "Connect failed."
Any thoughts out there?
try putty
Ph0enix_216,
I tried to connect from a Windows 7 machine and it works using putty for telnet (www.putty.org, a great program). Be sure to set the Connection->Data->Auto-login name to root.
well the guy in the other thread bricked his it sounds like...
