[Q] Bluetooth Tether auto reconnect - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Folks,
I've been using my Note GT-N7000 to tether with my Note 10.1 over bluetooth, which works just great if I explicitly connect the two. However, if say for example, the Note 10.1 is in my office, and the Note GT-N7000 is in my pocket, and I leave the office, the two won't automatically reconnect to each other when I return. I have to manually connect them again.
Is there any way to have the two automatically reconnect to each other when they are in proximity?
Thanks,
Drkmtr

Hey drkmtr, sorry I don't have an answer for you. I'd love to be able to get the bluetooth tethering to work. I'm also using a GT-N7000 and a Note 10.1 but I have had no luck. Are you using a 3rd party app to share the internet?
In my case everything connects, on my Note 10.1 the box "Use for internet access" is checked in bluetooth settings. But it just doesn't work for me.

Thanks for your reply mate,
The BT tethering works out of the box for me, no third party apps required, although I am running a custom ICS ROM on the N7000. How have you got your N7000 setup? I assume you have BT tethering enabled in your N7000 settings?
You could try a third party app "BT Auto Tethering" on the N7000 and it's sister app "BT Auto Connect" on the 10.1... both available from the market gratis.

I'm running Paranoid JB nightlies on my phone and stock on the tablet. Thanks for the market apps I, will give those a try.
Maybe I should go back ti ics on my phone.

I do this exact same thing as well and I haven't figured out a way to get them to auto connect either

Did anyone find a way to get auto-reconnect functionality with BT tethering?
I tether my Note to my Evo 3D using the stock BT tethering while at work. It works great except for my phone's crappy connection in my building (I blame Rogers).
Also, is anyone else experiencing drops in the tether connection when the Note sits idle for a while. If I initiate the tether, then let the tablet sit for a while unused, often when I pick it up to use it the tether connection is dead. The statusbar still states there's a tethered internet connection (as it does on my Evo 3D), but none of my apps will be able to connect to the web. The only way to re-establish the link is to turn BT off on the Note, and then turn it back on and re-initiate the tether.
Ooo... my 1,000th post.

[Q] trying to tether my Transformer to HTC hero

trying to share my HTC heros connection with my transformer but it isn't working. Neither bluetooth or wifi.
Running 2.1 by the way.
Another option is if someone gives me a guide to set up internet sharing from windows 7, which I cannot find for the life of me.
no one? ):

googled that before, I can find PC to PC and mostly for windows XP, but nothing on how to create a bluetooth bridge to the transformer ):
Your hero is rooted right? Mine tethers over Bluetooth fine using 'wireless tether for root users'.
Running rooted 2.3.3 on the hero, the updated transformer cant see airshare adhoc network. Wirelessteather also failed in the same way.
Wirelessteather does work with bluetooth.

Did you have any success in the end?
My Transformer's just arrived, and I'd like to tether to my rooted Hero, but can't figure it out.
If I choose WiFi mode, the Transformer can't see the Hero in the list of WiFi networks.
If I choose Bluetooth mode, I can pair the devices, but then what? How to I create the network connection? In Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Tethering & portable hotspot I turned on Bluetooth tethering, but it's not clear to me if that's to allow the Transformer to be the hotspot (i.e. server instead of client).
(Running VillainROM v13 on my Hero)
This has been a problem for many of us....it has been discussed in a few other threads also. Honeycomb (by default) won't connect to adhoc wifi networks.
I will donate to anyone who can create a hassle-free turnkey solution for this. Many of us have Android phones that are rooted, so a solution would benefit many. And I am using a Tilt 2, whose Android ROMs do not support BT. So this tethering solution needs to support wifi.

I'm also using wireless teather, only I am feathering it via wifi. It works fine.
Success!
I reverted my Hero to the previous ROM I was using, FroydVillain 1.7.2, and now I have Bluetooth tethering working.
Once the devices are paired, on the Transformer screen in the Bluetooth settings, where the Hero shows up, there's a spanner/wrench icon - when I clicked that I got the option to tether to it - this option didn't show up when I was using VillainRom v13.
I may try going back to VillainRom to see if it was something unconnected, such as rebooting the phone, which made the difference.
UPDATE: I went back to VillainRom v13 (Android 2.1) and it still failed to tether with Bluetooth. An Android 2.1 vs Android 2.2 issue, perhaps?
Can anyone else with a 2.1/eclair and 2.2/froyo device confirm this?
Have the same problem CM7(2.3.3)
WiFi or Bluetooth doesn't work.
I don't think we should see the "problem" as our phones. The issue is that Honeycomb (whether on the Transformer or Xoom or whatever) does not recognize ad hoc wifi connections. If that is addressed, this will be solved for everyone.

Here is what I did:
1. Disabled the WiFi on Transformer.
2. Enable WiFi-Tether on Phone (with Bluetooth and check the discoverable option in the settings before you start tethering).
3. Enable Bluetooth on Transformer and scan for devices. (If you already have it, unpair it first).
4. Pair with your phone.
5. Press the Wrench icon beside the phone (that says paired but not connected) on Transformer.
6. You will find a new option called Tethering. Press it and you're done.
Agagin, that's what I did and it worked for me perfectly. I have CM7 on my phone.
By the way, this exact method didn't work on my wife's Sprint LG Optimus S. Tried everything, but no way...
Hope this helps...

I guess Bluetooth is better than nothing, but supposedly there is a hack to get a Xoom to work with ad-hoc, so must be a way to get our Transformers to work with it as well. Guess we just need to play the waiting game. Cant wait to see what options we have in another month. I have the HTC Hero with CM7 and the Transformer, same issues with no tethering, though since im not a bluetooth fan, I really havent tried it yet. Wifi tether works fine with my ubuntu/windows laptops though.
How about USB tethering? Is that an option with our phones and the transformer?

Ad hoc tether is an issue for droid and lots of info can be found on the net and xda.
I have got a hero running villain rom v13 and can run wifi tether with a modified wpa_supplicant file.
See this post
Download the modded wpa_supplicant file, copy to /system/bin, set the permissions as shown and you can then see and tether to your ad hoc hero - dont forget to backup the original file(rename by adding .bak to file and copy to your sd card)
Obviously you need root.

Bluetooth tethering works fine for me using HTC Hero GSM, Wireless tether for root app, rooted using Android 2.2.1, CM6.2 based Elelinux Speedmachine V3. My TF is UK/WW version 8.2.3.13, bluetooth V6.1.2.
Confirmed Ad-hoc wifi doesn't work.

Some more information would helpful. What is it you want to do via Bluetooth? Share content between devices (e.g. music, videos, contacts etc)? Share the mobile data connection for Internet access where WiFi isn't available? Pairing devices on its own doesn't automatically 'connect' them as such, you need to tell them to do something .
Share the mobile data connection for Internet access where WiFi isn't available.
Unpair them, and then turn on wireless tether. It should ask permission to turn on bluetooth and make discoverable. Then on the transformer, search for devices. It should see the phone. Pair them. Then under paired devices on the transformer, it should show the phone with a little wrench next to it. Click the wrench and there will be the option for bluetooth tethering.
In that case I'm not sure that this is available over Bluetooth. You might however be able to use WiFi tethering, I'm not sure. I'm not quite up to scratch with everything that Cyanogenmod offers. Check under 'Settings' > 'Wireless and network' > 'Tethering' (if available) and see what there is. It might be called WiFi tethering or Mobile AP or something of that ilk. If not then perhaps you could ask over at the Cyanogenmod forums, or wait for someone else here to come up with a better answer .
[EDIT]: @lordgodgeneral: Hmm, interesting. I'll have to check this one out myself and see what I can do with it. I guess there was no need to wait for an answer after all .
Was able to do it through pdanet table beta but still can't do it with wireless thether app.
thanks for the help.

Is it true that TF101 can only connect wirelessly to the inter via bluetooth tethering? that might be a problem because my XPERIA X10 2.3 does not have an option for Bluetooth tethering but for wifi and usb tethering

No, that is not true. You can connect through wifi. I do it every day.

[Q] xoom wont obtain ip

My phone is a fascinate running miui, when I try to wifi tether to my xoom I can see they are both working correctly but the tablet just hangs as it attempts to gain ip addy. I have wifi settings off while trying this.......also tried pairing through Bluetooth and the phone and tab pair but won't connect?
New to tethering and going crazy lol.
If I connect to my house wifi it picks it up instantly.
My xoom is wifi only and running stock unrooted ics.
Thanks for any help
Have you tried tethering via a Market app - rather than the MIUI baked in?
WIFI Tether for Root
Yes, both the baked in and apps have 0 issue sending out signal, the Xoom just won't obtain IP, it shows the devices that it's trying to connect too, just hands there though
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Do you know if you are tethering in ad-hoc or infrastructure mode? If so, try this - implies it will work for the fascinate:
Wireless Tether through Infrastructure (Not ad-hoc)
Not sure which way is trying to, when I get back home I will give that ago and report back, thanks
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Couldn't get that method to work, I finally got and can get the ip connected now and but I cannot use data, even though the xoom shows connected.
The wifi signal icon does appear, but isn't colored, as if it's not connected

[Q] Ad-Hoc Wifi

I'm trying to connect my Note to an Ad-Hoc connection. I'm sure there is something obvious I am missing for why I can't see the Ad-Hoc connection from my note 10.1 but can't figure it out and didn't see anything here.
I posted my solution in another thread here with same topic. Refer to it. But the FoxFi app is the solution to this. Google the apk because it was removed from marketplace. Install it on phone. Then install foxfi add on, on phone, that's in marketplace. Then you should be good to go. Tablet will now pick up your tethering signal. Root is not needed either(for phone or tablet). App works great on pure stock. Works fine on my pure stock SG3.

I'm not really looking for a tether solution. I can tether to my phone just fine. I specifically want to know if there is a way to get the Note 10.1 to connect to and ad-hoc network for another reason. I do presentations and sometimes. Often I can do them right from the note using the All-Share Cast Dongle, but sometimes (due to issues w/ Dongle working with certain adaptors) I have to have my laptop connected to the projector and want to control it with remote desktop with my tablet. I want to do this without relying on my host having wifi I can use. So I need ad-hoc connectivity to connect to my laptop directly without having to lug around a wireless router.
On another note, out of curiosity I tried FoxFi and it doesn't work on my phone anyway. The built-in (stock) tether app works great and is all I need.
Lopk for a wifi direct type program for your laptop or try bluetooth dun. Type connection. Pdanet could ne a solution just not sure. Some type of device to device metwork is needed .if your laptop has iis there could be a solution in it.

Hi!
I want to ask you: Have you solved this?
I also need to connect to an ad-hoc.
I've read: on some other android devices they root and replace their wpa_suplicant. Does anybody know if it is also possible on Note 10.1 ?
Sry for my english...
Thx
Never did get it to work. I'm on stock without root and just being lazy. Accomplished my task with a $20 wifi router.

[Q] Auto Tether with NFC

So here's the deal. I have a rooted GS3 running stock rom, with Wifi Tether- TrevE Mod. I am using it to tether to my Nexus 7 installed as a head unit in my car. I want to use tasker to start the wifi tether automatically. I followed the instructions here (http://tasker.wikidot.com/wifi-tether) using the directions on the second half of the page. I confirmed the files are located where they are supposed to be, but it never starts the hotspot. I have checked to make sure the hotspot isn't on with no notification, my computer and tablet both fail to find the hotspot, so it is truly never starting,
I also know tasker has a "wifi tether on" setting that will enable the default tether program. I'd be perfectly willing to use that, but so far I've been unable to find the "entitlement_check" location using sqlite. I know there was a framework hack for ICS, will that still work on Jellybean?
Any advice people?
Edit:
For further information I decided to test the Wifi tether setting in Tasker just to see if I could use it, and it turned on the verizon hotspot successfully, but i started losing my data connection on the phone almost immediately. It let me go to one website, then the 4g disappeared, and would blink on and off again about once every 30 seconds. Not sure what that means.
Any update on this, trying to do the same thing and cant seem to figure it out

I had the same results as the OP with everything he listed.
Also I'm using my Verizon GS3 tethering to a Nexus 7 head unit. I settled on Bluetooth tethering using Tasker on my phone to enable BT tethering when it connects to the Nexus 7. Then on the Nexus 7 I have the Bluetooth Auto Tether app or whatever it's called to allow the internet connection to be shared with it.
For a long time my biggest struggle with BT tethering was that Pandora won't work with it. I even contacted Pandora support regarding this issue. Then a Google search revealed that you can use Pandora V1.3 with BT tethering! So for the last month or so I haven't really used Wifi tether, and there's enough bandwidth to even play Netflix in HD on the N7.
