[Q] Erratic charging behaviour - HTC One S

Hi,
I've been experiencing some weird, erratic charging behaviour in my One S. I plug it into the standard charger and leave it overnight. Since about two weeks, this rarely gives me a full battery in the morning. When I look at the stats, it usually charges to almost or completely full, but after that I get a lot of alternating periods of charging and discharging. Again, this is during the night, nobody touches the phone during this time (no, I have no children and the cat is locked up for the night in another room). I tried a different cable, but the result is the same.

So: why the charge/discharge cycles? And above all: why does the phone decide it's unplugged at about 4:15 although it's not?
Can anyone help here?
Edwin

Last night it was time for the periodic complete discharge of the battery. Now the erratic behaviour seems to have stopped, at least for the moment. I'll keep you posted.

Having the same problem.
I have the same problem on my One S. I also noticed that when it's charged to 80-90% it starts chaotically flashing the orange LED (alongside the battery symbol changing to charging/not charging) while it connects/disconnects to the charger.
Did you have any luck with this?

I did, but I wanted to know if that offered a permanent fix for the problem or it reappeared.

So I did the same thing, indeed the erratic behavior stopped when I was recharging it, but it took me 5h30min to get the phone to 89% battery. It went well up to ~40% but after that it was like 10%/hour.
Then I did a factory reset and in 2 hours it went from 59% to 97%. It seems to have worked better but the erratic behavior reappeared when the charging was at ~87%
If you found a permanent fix for this, would really appreciate you sharing it.

solution
Ok so I finally found a solution. It seems the stock charger output was the problem (5V, 1A). I bought a 5V, 700 mA charger and it now works like a charm, charges from 0% to 90% in ~2h 15 min. And battery life... no complaints whatsoever.

[Q] Battery Lag?

Hey guys, I have a problem with my Sensation. Whenever I fully charge it and then remove it from the charger, use it for like an hour or two, the phone still thinks the battery is 100% charged. When looking inside the battery usage, it shows the graph with 0s underneath it, while in the previous screen where you see the apps battery usage it says 2h 5m 13s or something like that.
This wouldn't really be a problem, but when I started up Maps Navigation and plugged the charger in the car, it wouldn't charge because it still assumed the battery was 100% charged!
Any of you also having this problem? Thanks in advance!

Does it stay 100% forever? Then you may have the inexhaustible battery... (not sure if this is grammaticaly correct )
I wouldn't consider this a problem. You can download a battery monitoring app from the market and see what's going on with your phone and if the 100% that it's rerporting is correct. Also, check that the battery contacts are clean.
Not sure my phone does that but it can be on half charge then when I reset phone it's gone up a notch. This morning it didn't look like it had charged although it had been plugged in. When I switched it was on orange then it did the charging animation for a few seconds without charger plugged in then stopped on full. Odd.
Mine stays on 100% for a couple of hours too, has done since I got it.
I think perhaps HTC are "cheating" (or using "creative coding", whichever expression you prefer) in the way they report the battery percentage. Make the battery appear better than it is. Just a theory, of course.

That happens to me a lot too. Woke up this morning, phone had been charging for nearly 5 hours, but was only on 82%. After a couple of minutes of the screen being on, it had leapt to 100% and stopped charging.
Also, once the battery is below about 20%, it will sometimes drop 2-3% at a time. Odd.
Looks like they totally screwed the battery meter hardware or something in the software. Remembers me of my iPod touch
Experienced the say.. hopefully either it will auto be fine due to charge cycle or via updates

Thanks for your answer, so it's probably a general problem that may be fixed by either HTC or the Cooks that make ROM's for our beautiful new phones
Can you tell me how long it takes for your phone to fully charge? My phone needs 3-4 hours to fully charge..is this normal?!
Hmm mine doesn`t lag but it takes times to charge. Usually with my hd2 take around less than 2 hours to fully charge now with sensation around 3 hours

I received my phone yesterday and charged it for 4-5 hours throughout the day. Last night it was close to 100% while I was playing with it (off the charger). I then charged it over night for 9 hours. This morning the battery says it's at 50% but has 15 hours left.
Weird :\
Charge the battery with the power turned off overnight, in the morning unplug the charger, turn the phone on, and shutdown again, and plug the charger back for 30
mins phone still turned off. After that start using the phone normally, this way you calibrate the phones battery meter properly.

[Q] Battery Staying at 100%

I've noticed that the battery meter will sometimes stay at 100% for a while and then all of the sudden drop to the actual percentage sometime later. A reboot after unplugging the phone will fix the problem and report the battery % at the correct level. I was wondering how many other people were experiencing this, or if it is just a hit or miss thing?
I'm still on stock, unrooted, no mods. It's a straight out of the box Skyrocket.
Also, does the problem remain after rooting, modding, etc.?
I asked this on the battery results thread in general, and only received one response, so I figured this would be better in Q&A.
I had the same issue, but it has only happened one or two times.
Showed 100% for hours then rebooted and it showed 73%
I don't know how long you've had your phone, but it takes several cycles from full to empty for the battery to calibrate correctly. During that time you can get some really funky readings on it.
I am experiencing the same problem.
I've also had a hard time charging the phone. I've left it plugged in upwards of 18 hours, only to find it saying its only 83% charged. That may just be another symptom of the same problem though.
Do you think this is a phone or a battery issue?

That sounds like you were plugged into a pc vs ac power and had heavy usage during that time.
Mine charges very quickly when at idle and plugged into the wall.
I've had my phone since the day it launched (the 6th) and just experienced this for the first time yesterday. It was indeed quite odd to see.
I have had this happen one time. I also noticed the phone got very hot.
It actually happend yesterday, stayed at 100% almost all day then just shut off and wouldnt reboot.... freaked me out!!

I think that the battery is pretty wonky. I am not sure if the NFC addition is causing these issues but some people are having amazing life ans some people (me included) get horrible. I am getting a warranty exchange on my battery. No way I should drop 12% in an hour and 20 minutes when the only usage is 19 minutes of checking email. If I have to have it plugged in every time I turn around it is not exactly a wireless device now is it?

Strange, I was just reading this thread and thinking I have never experienced this. Then I checked my battery stat and it showed 100% even though I've been using it for an hour and a half. I restarted and now reads 90%.
Had my phone for almost a month. Rooted only on stock ROM. Just took it off USB cable from laptop an hour and a half ago.

I think we narrowed it down to being a bad charging circuit in the phone or battery triggered by a .1a charger.
When we got our new skyrockets they stopped doing it.

I was powering my phone off, plugging the power in and allowing it to recharge. The phone would automatically power on as soon as I connected the power but I didn't think that mattered. It turns out it did. If I powered the phone on and then connected the power, the battery meter would work correctly.
This was different the Captivate I had previously. That phone had the capability to charge while powered off. There was even a charging graphic that displayed while the phone was off.
The Skyrocket did not have this same feature when I originally bought it. However, ATT did an update at some point and now it does. I've been unable to re-create the stuck battery gauge since that update.
please only use the charger that came with the phone. other chargers, after prolonged usage, may cause issues.
The charger that came with most skyrockets is a .1a charger and causes the issue as well. A few reported getting .7a chargers in the box but most have been .1
I have tested the iPhone charger theory on 5 phones now. Phone 1 and 2 experienced the issue. Phones 3-5 did not
Its more than just the charger. The phones experiencing this either have a bad battery or it's in the phone

From day 1 with the skyrocket, I have used an old wall charger and cable and had this problem daily. I plug it in at night and in the morning, it's at 100% until I reboot, or some other random event that drops the percentage to the real battery stats.
Because of this thread, I dug out the box and used the wall charger and cable that came with it, and this morning shortly after unplugging the phone, it was at 99% and dropping, just as it should. Very glad I tried this.
Ummm no.....

I did a recheck of my black cube SR wall charger (Samsung part # ETA0U80JBE).. It is NOT .1a it is 1.0amps - which - interestingly enough is EXACTLY what my iPhone3g power cube right next to it delivers.
The .7am Samsung charger has the usb connector on the side, and is part number ETA0U60JBE - delivering 5v at .7 amps (30% decrease over the little cube device). That was the charger my SGS-II had. My S/R came with the 1.0 amp ETA0U80JBE version.
One amp will charge the phone MUCH faster than the USB port. Per the spec, the typical USB device cannot drain more than 500mA (1/2 of what the power cube supplies to the phone).
Unfortunately Apple and Samsung both have the cubes pretty well locked up, so I cant compare the components, but at a first glace they appear to be absolutely identical, both putting out about 5.1 volts at zero load.

Battery 100 to 0 in 1 sec

Hi, I'm using the AT&T One X with Team Venom ViperXL 2.0 rom.
This morning (while it was still connected to the charger) I received a call, got stuck (I couldn't use it at all until the call was dropped) then I noticed the home-widget clock was showing the correct time, while the statusbar clock was 35 minutes behind
I've rebooted the device, and noticed that although it was connected to the charger all night I had 0% battery.
all this time the device was scorching hot (like when playing a game and charging at same time).
I've poster a screenshot of the battery usage.
What could have caused this and how do I stop this from happening again?
Thanks for any help
I would let the phone drain completely then do a full over night charge while the phone is is off, do this cycle a couple of times.
Did you notice you have some bad wake locks?
You should use better battery stats and find out what's stopping your phone from deep sleeping like it should.

those aren't bad wake locks... I'd say that couple discharge and charge cycles like you said will fix it.

Its just a metering error, not real life battery drain. I'm not an electrical engineer or anything. But I don't see how its possible for that much power to be discharged without a huge amount of heat or light, or the device being grounded.
The only thing I've seen clear this up, is a factory reset.
Charge cycles to calibrate the meter can't hurt. But I'd caution against discharging to "zero" (phone shutoff). Discharging to 10-20% is plenty accurate enough. Over-discharge of Li ion batteries can render the battery unable to take a charge. While the voltage doesn't truly drop to zero, it can drop enough to shutoff the safety circuit. I've seen it happen to this and other Android phones in the past (person drained to shutoff, then the battery won't charge).

You might be right about the flash and bang, but the phone seemed to charge like it was really on 0%. maybe the read of 100% was wrong and the reboot fixed it; but why would it be on 0% if it was plugged in to the AC all night? That's also an indicator of a problem, right?

A similar problem was discussed thoroughly in another thread. One person mentioned that its possible there is a short between the battery layers. But I would think such a thing would make this event happen more frequently in the case of a hardware failure such as that.

Battery stuck at random % while discharging, razr maxx hd

I've got my razr recently but faced with quite a strange problem. I use the oem firmware. After it is charged I use the phone as usual(however it discharges rather quickly) but then the showing battery percent just stuck(it can be any percent 73,61,8 whatever) and it doesn't change for a ling time (5-8) even if I use browser or play games. And after that period it discharges again. Any solutions to this problem?

How many full discharge/recharge cycles has your phone undergone since you got it? If it is rather new, there is nothing to worry about, it takes a couple of cycles until the system battery stats are adjusted to your battery.

I have a XT910 that started doing something similar a few days ago.

I wonder if it's a bug or a physical problem?

The charging is extremely slow. Overnight the charge was from 10% to 84% only

Question: are you using a wall charger? Because if not, i.e. charging off of a computer or something, then that would likely explain why. Simple fix to this scenario would be to charge directly from the wall.
