[Q] Message Access Profile [MAP][JB] Bluetooth - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi All. There are some threads on this subject on the Galaxy S III and a couple other places.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1916902
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1350899
I'm not a dev and perhaps if a dev is willing to open up a discussion thread on this? would be nice. I'm interested to know if this is going to be implimented in the JB project? And perhaps if it all ready has. I'm running CM10 and cannot seem to find a way to activate this in bluetooth. I've done this several times with the Iphone 4S and the 5 cause I'm a car salesman who helps folks pair their devices to the nifty new bluetooth tech in their cars. I'm a proud Andriod user. I hate to see something that the Iphone does that ours does not. Any feed back from users that have found this to work on any ROMS would be appreciated. Or perhaps is anyone know whats cooking on the grill for this. :fingers-crossed:

OK I found in the BBQlog for CM that there is a message access protocol that could be implemented in the next build.
Any of you folks out there with messaging in you car stereo? Let me know how it works for you?
Oh and bump!

Same on my end, with a 2012 BMW 328. Did you have a chance to try this on other roms (stock, for example)? I might try flashing back to see if Bluetooth MAP works on that.

I currently drive the BMW X3 F25 and have also searched multiple forums regarding some additional MAP support for the bmw office system with no luck.
I currently have a stock HTC one X with ICS on it which allows SMS support and I have tested a S3 with latest CM10 Nightly which offers no support. I am just looking for the perfect ROM which supports the email functionality as well before I go ahead and flash leaving me with less compatibility than what I currently have.
As per the bmw office compatibility it seems that the only stock android phone to support both sms and email is the HTC sensation. No idea what makes it so "special".
Any feedback regarding your latest attempts will be much appreciated!

I'm a Samsung Galaxy S3 user and I've been trying to figure this out with my 2012 Uconnect in my Dodge Durango. Still no luck. I thought the SGS3 supported this feature, there is a service running in the background called MAPSamsungService that is opened during Bluetooth connection, but the Uconnect says this phone is not supported. Frustrating to say the least.

I can confirm that MAP is not enabled on CM10 9/30 nightly. Still hoping for a dev to implement.

I just paired a galaxy SIII with firmware 4.1.2 to a 2013 subaru with Nav. and the MAP worked perfectly. In fact its the first phone you could actually send text from the stereo unit as well.

I have a bmw e90 lci (320d) with iDrive (communications installed). I have the same issue using my Galaxy Note 2. Email syncing is not supported while text messages do sync.
I'm using CM10.1 though and it has most of the stuff missing in its bluetooth stack. Music does not show track titles, no contact photos, dialer list syncing is missing, no sms messages either...sucks!

I think cyanogen still has some catching up to do with bluetooth. Touchwiz seems to have it down. 4.1 or higher.

Touchwiz does only support sms, does it? No mail via Bluetooth map?

Yes text message. No mail though. IOS6 does receive only. My wife's stock sgs3 does send & receive

Thanks for clarification.
On 2.3.4 even mail was working. Hope to see a solution sometime.

Hy,
"HTC sense" is the speciality here. HTC sense 4.1 and upwards (5.0 as well) supports email over bluetooth MAP but only if you use the stock mail client from HTC. The stock client allows the bluetooth stack to access its mail database, so the HTC Sense Bluetooth stack is specially designed to work with the stock email client. All other mail clients will not work with Bluetooth MAP profile.
Other manufacturers removed mail support for their bluetooth stacks map protocol. Like Samsung did with Touchwiz when google started encoding the gmail app mail database so prevent access from other apps. This prevents samsungs touchwiz to access the mail database too.
Next step for HTC would be to tackle Calendar and Tasks which should be transmitted by SyncML over bluetooth obex.
I have an HTC One with Sense 5.0 and sms and email are working perfectly with my F21 M135i
Cheers!

Well I'll jump back in here....
I have found that for the best connection possible to the Dodge Uconnect system with the Samsung Galaxy S3 is to run 4.1.2 that is completely stock. I'm getting all contacts downloaded and sms receive works (send doesn't, but that's Samsung's fault for forking the protocol). Names are still not announced with the receipt of sms messages, she always says "no number available" for sms but can seem to match them up for phone calls. I'm guessing the contact information is not getting sent from the phone to the car for sms like it is for phone calls.
I haven't tried email but I don't use their stock email client, only gmail. I doubt it would work.

Seems like whatsapp is serious into getting onto our phones

Those in the whatsapp beta for Android should update your software ASAP, because they just put in push functionality for everyone with a 2.2 phone. Is this the only software so far not from google to actually use the 2.2 push function? (C2DM and the likes do not count)

It doesn't poll like the old version anymore, and after some testing, I am getting my messages a little faster, because there is usually a 10-20 second delay when the app is sleeping, but this time it's like a 2-3 second after my friend sends me the text via whatsapp.
ahh right so there would be better battery life too??
Is the beta app available? Have they mentioned a release date?
Thanks

Whatsapp is probably one of the most useful apps for someone coming from a blackberry and misses BBMs. The difference is the speed but the main upside is that it's crossplatformed. Also the app is good for people that travel and have an open wifi spot. Free messaging to friends back home is well worth it.

Nope, but it should be within the next few months, it's already very stable other than some of the extra stuff like backgrounds, etc.

Yeah, since I have quite a few friends with an iphone and BB, I'm able to send them messages via my data plan.
AppBrain's Fastweb Installer uses C2DM too for installation of applications from your PC browser.
Anything that uses C2DM is immediately interesting, I'll check it out!

It's not using the same type of 2.2 push unfortunately.
hows it different?
EDIT: also seems like there are sometimes big delays between messages. whatsapp keeps disconnecting in the new version
I had to revert back to an older verison I believe. Newest version yesterday kept logging me off also and messages were stalled until I sent one out then they'd all come in.
Looked on the changelog and they took off the "Push Notifications"
Currently running: v1.0.6138
I'm using whatsapp on 2.1. working pretty well so far. ... thinking of getting 2.2 but no sense UI ROM for hero yet.
can we have a link to the apps apk?
Aww man, they removed push notifications via C2DM and the reason was they need to give google a quota? I have no idea what that means.
http://beta.whatsapp.com/test/7/WhatsApp.html
* google push disabled -- we need quota from google
really, what's the difference/advantage of using C2DM. i dont understand what's going on in the background.
Yepp.... just downloaded the APK from the link provided above... You can download and install it, but when it asks for your display name, you will get a message that says "Unauthorized beta user, DO NOT E-MAIL US", or something like that.
That's too bad because I loved it on my BB to chat with my iPhone friends, you would think that it would be easier and faster to create an app for Android and it would already be out in the market !!
it works!! everyone gets that message just wait till tommorrow and try again and it will work. Heaps of people have had success using this method. dont give up so easily
updated yesterday and they've been approved for the push notification via GOOGLE's c2dm.
Only thing i've noticed is that the app unlike iPhone's version doesn't time out while it's in the background. So it seems like you're always logged in. This could be corrected by a task manager app to kill the app but once you receive a new message it auto logs you on and double check marks the message as read.

[Q] Clickable address links in Calendar?

Does anyone know what controls the ability to click on the address links in the "where" section of the calendar? Cognition is the only rom that does this. I've tried pulling the touchwizcalendar.apk and tochwizcalendarprovider.apk from cognition and putting it on other roms but still no address links. Although, I am able to click on phone #'s that are put in the description area, still nothing for addresses.
Just to clarify, I'm trying to find out how to add the ability to the calendar that when an address is put in the "where" field it automatically becomes a link that will launch maps and do a search for that address. -Thanks in advance
+1 This is one of the very very few features I miss from the Blackberry world. Any ideas?

Yea, I know it's possible because it's working on the cognition rom. The question is how do we transfer the ability to other roms.

Thanks but that's not quite what I'm looking for. There seems to be a way to get this functionality into the touchwiz calendar.
Gemini Calendar or Touch Calendar
Gemini Calendar or Touch Calendar. They both work.
I have the same issues with Galaxy ROMs.
Biggest complain - cannot dial conference bridge codes easily. I'm making manual change in the calendar to have "800CALLME;CODE" and then Copy-Paste to dialer.
Any progress?
Have you had any luck finding a way to add this functionality to the samsung calendar? I am having the same issue with the galaxy s2 and keen to try to work out how to fix it. am assuming the touchwiz calendar is similar on the two devices.
I think that is a feature only on the ATT stock systems which the Cognition ROM closely resembles. I wish I could have this feature but I have never seen it working on any 2.2.1 I9000 ROMS or the newer 2.3.3 I9000 ROMS.
If anyone finds a solution, that would be awesome!
Just to check, are you saying it was an AT&T app separate from the Samsung touchwiz ones on most of their phones?
not really sure. I know that its still a samsung touchwiz app, but it for some reason it only worked when i was on Cog. Im no Dev or anything like that, just an observation I made while flashing

Can XOOM 3G make Voice call like a mobile phone

Can any one advise this as its not listen in the 3G Specs..
By default no, but there has been talks about possibly getting it to work and a lot of people have success getting Line2 (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.toktumi.line2&feature=search_result) to work on it but requires you to even find the APK somewhere or download it on another android phone and copy the APK file off it.
I am looking for a core 2 Andriod 3.0 with at least a 7.1 or 10.1 screen...
Have to be able to make call.
Any recommendations..
I don't think you're going to find that anywhere.
Good luck with that, last I checked there were no tablets out there (at least in terms of Android 3.0+) that will allow you to make phone calls with them unless you use Skype (or mod it to allow making phone calls nativity.
I have heard that Samsung Galaxy Tab does allow you to make phone calls but I haven't tested myself and don't know if the newer Tab 10.1 (not sure if it's out yet or not) will support the phone features either since the Tab 10.1 will have 3.0.
I'm sure other members on this forums will step in to correct me if I'm wrong at anything I've said here but this is what I've saw so far.
I had some limited success with nettalk and my Google Talk phone number. Could connect with my home phone but my husband said it was very echo-y. I'm wifi only so it can be done. I'm going to try Line 2.
GrooVe IP works
i downloaded groove IP from the market tonite and it seems to work fine, it uses your Google voice number. No monthly fee like Line 2

you have to be logged out of Google talk on your xoom. Also, make sure that in your gv settings you have it set to google chat rather than your mobile number. Not sure if that made any sense, but they explain it step by step in the help section.
is that video calling or just voice?

Dang... I just remembered a long time ago I deleted the google chat from my registered phones list because I didn't think I would ever need to use it. So that would mean I would have to add it back, but... yeah. If I try to add another phone it gives me the name to choose and I need to set a number for it, and I have no idea what the number would be for google chat. Thanks for the quick responses though! I'll try and figure out what to do next. And I have 2 nice bluetooth headsets and they do work great!

The legacy Galaxy Tab does let you use a GSM sim card and allow one to make phone calls as well as access EDGE/3G data...i helped a friend set up his tab a couple of weeks ago and can confirm this....im located in Mumbai, India...and the versions available here do allow the ability to also use it as a phone..

i believe its the kernel that is stopping it from possible.
at the momenet, honeycomb is designed to be a tablet OS, hence it didn't include the Phone's feature in the system.
for galaxy tab, (the older one), it running on Gingerbread which a Phone OS, hence it can be easily enable the phone feature.
i believe we need to wait till Ice Cream where it unite Gingerbread and Honeycomb, so that it has the phone's feature in the system and can be enabled easily.
Hey All
Just thought I'd add to this old topic. I have an Australian 3G Xoom, on the American 3.1 update, with my settings pushed back for 3G etc.
Tonight I installed the UAString/SMS mod, so that I could send SMSes (which work perfectly with Handcent, over the Telstra 3G network - just like any mobile phone would do). Then I tried calling my tablet. This also worked perfectly! The call came up, it connected, etc. I answered and this is where we hit trouble. No sound. Either way. So the Xoom doesn't have a microphone/speaker set up for sound during a call. I even tried setting the Xoom on speaker phone, but still nothing.
Any ideas? Not sure if this has been posted about before, and I thought it was pretty exciting, to be making normal calls, and SMSes (there is all this talk about Google Voice, which is useless outside of the US) on the Xoom, and this was very exciting for me.

[Q] ASOP Contacts to replace the HTC Sense contacts

Ive been loking for the ASOP contacts/dialer to replace the HTC Sense but i couldnt find it anywhere. Anybody knows how to replace the app on an unlocked device? I find useless that the HTC contacts doenst sync to my Google account. Also it seems the HTC app merges duplicates in the phone, but no in Google.
With my old G1 i can keep all contacts syncd but not with this phone. I tried to flash Gapps 20110613 but it didnt work. I used Blue6IX_Mod02.zip and Bloater to remove as much crapware as i could but they dont touch contacts either.
Is there anyway to replace the contacts/dialer with the standard ASOP one? If not, do i need to install a GB ROM? I dont have S-OFF since this is a work phone and dont want to mess much with installing a new ROM if is not absolutely needed. Also, I really need to use the camera in Skype, but it seems it doesnt work on the ICS ROMS so i wont touch those for now.
Replacing the HTC Calendar will be nice too
Thanks a lot for your help
I'm not sure what you did, but the HTC Sense contacts most certainly sync with Google, and with Facebook and Whatsapp and Twitter. When I've reinstalled a Sense ROM, I never have to mess with my contacts, as soon as I enter my gmail info, everything starts syncing perfectly. Within 10 minutes all my contacts, my calendar, and even all my downloaded apps, are all right there on my phone.
I think you deleted something you shouldn't.
Sense has some negative points, but the contacts app is not one of them.
When I've used CM7 in the past on different phones, I've always missed the contacts app the most. I love the way it integrates with every major service, collates messages/mails/updates, and just generally kicks the butt of the regular contacts app.
It sounds like you're doing something wrong.

Thanks for the reply, I may be doing something wrong so let me describe the shortcomings I see with the Sense contacts,
1) select a contact, while you are looking at contact details change to another app, now go back to contacts...it doesnt show the contact you have selected, rather it goes to the "matched contacts suggestion" or to the full contacts list. Even if i select dismis all in matched contacts it always brings me back to that screen. If i go to dialer>contacts it goes back to the full list of contacts
2) google contacts groups - nowhere to be seen, specially favorites. Somehow the Sense contacts has its own favorites not syncd with google. With Go Contacts you can see the Google/android favorites why no with Sense contacts?
3)Dialer and contacts show messages and call log ONLY for the native services. I use only Gvoice for calls and SMS, so nobody has my Tmobile number. GVoice is completely integrated with the phone, however the dialer/contacts is not integrated with Gvoice.
4) I also have the HP Touchpad running CM9, with the standard "People" app. Thats a Google native app, with full integration with GVoice and similar layout, why can not i have that in the mytouch 4g? Why do i need to use the Sense contacts?
Im not saying the sense contacts is bad, but i want something else, namely the Google app for contacts. do i need to flash a ROM to get the problems above solved? Or do i need to change anything else on my current settings?
It sounds like you want the Google apps that come with android 4.0 (ics). Since out phone is running gingerbread, flashing those apps will get you nowhere. I'd suggest you try running one of the ICS based roms that are available.

thats plan D ... this is a work phone (so dont want to mess with ROMs, S-ON unlocked is fine since i followed HTCdev.com instructions and for what i hear people dont have any problems getting a replacement form TMobile if something goes wring). Also i need Skype/GTalk videocalls and none of the ICS roms i saw have that working. Thats why i was asking for the AOSP contacts.apk or similar. I think it should be somewhere since my old G1 with CM7 uses the google contacts app fine. But im not sure if there is an apk for 2.3.4 AND if i can just replace the Sense files or it will give me any other trouble.

I'd wait a little till the first rc at least will start to pop out. Tbalden is, working on kernel 3 for Cm9 and if everything is going well it will be put under vinq also... We just need to wait for some days/weeks I think. Till now every ICS ROM out there is still in development...

So kernel 3 is here and it's GOOD! Fast, stable and everything is working, including wifi, Bluetooth, 3G / 4G, camera... You can go look to
virtuous.prp2.com/doubleshot/inquisition/virtuous_inquisition-v4.0.2-doubleshot-kernel3_v2.zip
For doubleshot there is no better rom atm I think... It's oc to 1.7ghz like Cm9, very recommendable!
Hope I could help you

Did you find a way?
I have an HTC One running Maximus 13 with Android 4.3 and HTC Sense 5.0
I would also like to replace the HTC Sense contacts/dialer/calendar with the stock Android 4.3 apps
I cannot get carddav contacts to sync properly or edit/add carddav contacts because the HTC version of these apps won't cooperate.
Did you find a way to replace them?
Thanks

[APP][4.1+] 8sms: Android 4.4 KitKat / CyanogenMod 10.2 stock messaging with extras

EDIT: Download 8sms from Google Play or download from the website.
EDIT: 8sms now based on Android 4.4 KitKat / Cyanogenmod 10.2. See post #394.
EDIT: App renamed from 88sms to 8sms. See post #246.
Hi,
This is my first android app and my first app announcement on XDA so apologies in advance if I've broken any rules.
I've ported the stock messaging app and then added some enhancements and changes so it can (hopefully) work on any Jelly Bean phone. This app is downstream from the latest Android 4.3 and CyanogenMod 10.2 (not-yet-released as of writing).
(ICS compatibility is a possible future feature.)
Please have a look if interested and feel free to try it out.
The Play Store link is:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.thinkleft.eightyeightsms.mms
Excerpts from the app description follows ...
Notable features
Notification pop-ups
Quick reply
Gesture based templates
Emoji support
Optional dark theme
Install this app if you want to use features from the latest Android messaging app without having to wait for a full phone software update.
Usage
Whilst 88sms is a replacement for the messaging app that came with your phone, it is actually an add-on application only.
Please do not disable or remove the messaging app that came with your phone as that is still required to receive sms and mms messages.
88sms works best if you turn off notifications for the messaging app that came with your phone. Then you won't get two sets of notifications.
Phone compatibility
This app may not work (yet) on the Samsung Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. If you install this app on one of these devices, please let us know if it works.
If you install this app on your phone and it does not work, please let us know. Please be sure to specify your phone model and software version number, and the version of 88sms you have installed.
Permissions
This app requires a wide range of permissions because it is a port of a system app. System apps use a lot of permissions. Full network access is required in order to send (or download) mms using your phone's cellular data (mms) connection.
Thank you.
Works great. Left my rating on the play store.

Sure, really appreciate it. after install, i open it, but one dialog box appear (it said: sorry...._ i can't remember) then escape the program. i tried several time, same thing. so i uninstall your software.
Works great on note 1
mms isn't working it just keeps trying to send and never sends. The stock messaging app works fine. I am using a Note 2 on att with a rooted stock rom
Yea group messaging doesn't work since the MMS problem. It just stays sending and won't go through.

On Sprint GS4.... MMS doesn't send on this app :/ but when I go to my stock messaging app it sends and I receive it from both apps, just a little workaround to an otherwise amazing app. Love the look and feel like AOSP! Some custom theming options would be great!
Great app, I already love it...
A nice feature that I would like to see is the ability to set the number of line for tying SMS... Because 3 lines is not enough for long SMS typer like me ^^

I will follow up and try to fix the bugs. Unfortunately, I've gone travelling ...
Hi,
Thanks to everyone of you for trying it out and thanks for the encouragement and feedback!
I acknowledge there may be a few problems on some devices ... it is my first app, after all, and it's not like I have a lot of different phones to test it on
I will follow up and try to fix the bugs. Unfortunately, I've gone travelling for a week so I might not be able to do much until a week later.
But I will follow up.
Thank you all!

Damn!! Well once you get back this app really has a lot of potential... just letting you know! don't give up man, this is gonna be awesome, I have a feeling!
Works great on my I9100 using LSS/AOKP Chameleon ROM.
Only thing I would change is the icon.
Does not work on HTC first running sense 4+ rom. Will revert back to stock rom tonight n give it a go.

Working great on SGH-I337 Stock 4.2
FC on startup on i777 running JB 4.1.2
I can get to the conversation if I click on the incoming text notification; however trying to switch to the conversations list causes immediate FC.
Great job, this is the perfect SMS I've been looking for for years.
