Hello,
I have a few numbers for a certain contact and I need to write a custom label for those number.
Work/Mobile/Fax etc. are just not enough, I need the custom option.
On some contacts I have the option and on other I don't.
How can I fix that?
Can I do anything about it?
Thank you.
I have 9 available labels for phone numbers of a contact and one of them is "custom". Sabsa Prime 6.5
Maybe the contacts that do not have this label for you are from your SIM card?

I downloaded the RUU from the HTC site - it's the official HTC ICS for the Desire S.
So there is nothing I can do except getting another ROM?
Have you tried just typing in a new label?

Sorry! I got confused with the fact that you can only do that when editing Google contacts online, not on the phone.

So basically there is no way?
Are all your contacts on "Google", and not on the "Phone"?
I tried to make a new contact on the "Phone" and there is no "Custom" option for the label, only "Other", while with "Google" contacts there is.
Yeah I also noticed that but I obviously not everyon has gmail, also I don't have everyone's emails....
Bah.. I had really hoped that they would fix this stupid option with ICS.

That's the thing... they have nothing to fix.
You can save contacts to Google even if they don't have gmail, that's what I do anyway, I store all my contacts on Goggle and none on the Phone. This way I never have to backup my contacts when wiping and fleshing new ROMs (which I a lot).
Just try it...
People -> Move Contacts - is that it?
Will I be able to move them back if I want to?
Will google have my number if I do this (I'm asking cause I don't want ppl getting my number through my google profile/Google+) ?

Usually you can go in and edit the contact and chose a ringtone for that contact. Does the Captivate version of Android not do this? I'm not seeing it.
you need to have your contacts on the phone not google then you should be able to add custome ringtone.

I think what he's saying is that you're accessing your contacts that are on Google's server and not on your phone. Using Google Sync on the iPhone just pulls the contacts down to your phone rather than looking them up on the server.
I'm curious about how accessing Google's contacts works myself since I'll probably be switching from my iPhone to the Captivate tomorrow.

if that were true,i wouldn't be able to access them while in flight mode, which I can.
Funny thing is that I was running Android 2.2 on my Fuze, and I was able to assign separate ring-tones to the contacts that were synced. Can't do that on this version. I did download Ringo-Lite from the marketplace and can now assign rings and sms tones to all my contacts.
I can't even figure out how to do a custom ringtone in general...
I guess it's easy to tell i'm a first time user with android here.

I tried to use Ringtones but it only shows the local contacts (The ATT stuff).
Which all of this makes no sense to why you can't assign one to a Google Contact when I could on the iPhone... They're stored locally as well, so I don't see why this is impossible to do.
@TexUs
The iPhone saved your google contacts to the phone. Your new android phone looks them up and displays them. if you hit the menu button while looking at people, it will give you import/export options. Try importing all those contacts to the Captivate memory.

Yeah me too, but I figured it out. Plug your device in and mount your storage card, the create a folder called "ringtones" on the root, and place your MP3s in there. Worked for me.
You can create a new contact on the phone using the same name and add the ringtone ther and it will link to the other and only show one listing and the ringtone will work.

I'd believe this again if it weren't for the fact the contacts are still accessible even without an internet connection. Which means Android is saving them to the phone as well, so why the hell can't I assign custom ringtones to them... Just makes no sense.
What's also insanely stupid about that is anytime a new contact on Google gets added you also have to save it down to the phone, as well.

I just switched from the HTC Aria to the Captivate today, and the TouchWiz interface is taking some getting used to. On the Aria, I could just go into a contact and click "edit" then choose a ringtone for each contact, I am guessing that was an HTC "Sense" feature. Thanks for the tip about creating a local contact and linking them. I am sure that is what "Sense" was doing, but I couldn't figure it out on this device. BTW, the Captivate ROCKS!
So I installed aContacts and it lets me set a ringtone for each contact but it still plays the default. Is it just me or is this a HUGE assinine mistake? Is this a bug in the dialer? I find the idea of creating 1000 contacts on the phone to be repugnant.
Dont get me wrong all in all this is an awesome phone, but come on guys this is a fundamental flaw.

I created all my contacts locally do get mine working, it'll match them up. Only way I've found to do that. Major PITA, and yes, this is a FLAW and there's no way around it.
I went to my contacts and pressed the menu button, the more button, and then exported my contacts to SD card, and then imported those same contacts back. Viola! I now have contacts that I can assign ringtones to.
and are those contacts still synched with google?
ATT sync is OFF.
Google Sync is ON.
I sign into Google, go to Google Contacts... nothing.
I flash a new rom, I sign into my account on my phone - all my contacts are there. With their painstakingly-manually assigned photos.
Are my contacts being saved in some dark sector of my phone? Are they hidden on some Google Sever? Where can I find them?!

I type "Google Contacts" into Google, and click on the first link. Where should I be looking?
go to Gmail, and on left check Contacts...
Maybe your error is that you search for something not being logged in into gmail, or another account?
If you are using any 2.1 rom then any contact appears on your phone when you sign into google... not Just 'my contacts' or any other group, so check the all contacts tab or whatever it's called. Every contact in your gmail account will appear, even your Craigslist adult services email addresses that you love to send to (the local police know about you). I would venture to say that 99% this is a Google issue and not a phone issue as there is no way your phone pulls these out of the blue. Also if its that much of a problem, hit the menu button in the contacts list and then go to display or settings (can't remember what) and unselect Google contacts.

Use titanium backup and backup something called "contacts storage" (not the contacts app) and take a backup of it. This is the place where phone contacts are copied to, no matter where else they might be backed up the system. This has been a life saver for me many times, even today.

When you add a new contact does it ask you where you want to save the contact to? choices would be phone, SIM or google.

turn google sync on
yes, that one, the one under sync thingy setting somewhere on your phone, that you have turned off I bet. Let it sync like a crazy wild ass Then check in Gmail contacts on the left and voila. Wizard Magic of the totally not evil google.
Basically, never turn the google sync off, or your'e f-d on contacts and it seems a few other things too.

I had Google Sync on since day one and it never did anything. I even turned it on and off to force the issue.
I have my new flash, and all my contact photos deleted. I have reupped a few of them, and nothing in my Google Contacts yet either. Do I need to "star" them in Android?
Going forward, when you create a new contact and it asks where you want it saved, choose Google. This will automatically save the contact to your Gmail account. When you flash your again and sign in after flashing, your contacts will be there

I like my accounts saved to my SIM card in case anything happens. I would also like them saved to Google as a redundant backup. Why is this not possible?
Hi,
When I'm flashing new ROMs I'm using the contacts import/export function.
The problem is - after import(after I'm done flashing) the default numbers are gone... i.e if I have a several numbers for my wife(cell, home etc) and I set the default to cell, when I'm using the swipe right on her name in the contact list it calls my house and not her cell phone(when before flashing it would all her cell).
I did a little research in the past and it seems the vcf file do holds what number you set as default(the research was - export the contact list, then change the default for one contact and export again and compare the vcf files - they were different, and the difference wasn't only the time-stamp )
anyone else have this problem??
many thanks
Alon
I used to do the vcf files thing, although I never noticed that problem.
But nowi just use google backup.
Much easier and convenient, in my opinion.

I don't like this option because when I sync google contacts it brings all the contacts from gmail which basically every email address I ever sent a mail to - and then it ends up in more than 700 contacts...so every time I flash I immediately set sync off for contacts

If I might ask, why do you want to do this? Without this how do you know at a glance where your particular contact is stored?
i dont really need to know where my contacts are stored as all my contacts are on my google account.
I understand. I like them there as a management tool, so if I make a mistake and store one of my contacts on my phone or sim, it flags me.
I'm sorry I can't help you further with this. Maybe you could ask this question in the development section as I think this is a feature of the android system.

I disliked this feature as well, becuz i don't have facebook on my phone. I use exdialer becuz u can get themes for the dial pad, and the other program it comes with, ex contacts, allows u to remove the avatar pic. its smooth and very customizable.
Not sure if this should've been posted under Xperia Z5 or Android General forum, but here is goes: a friend got married and changed names. I went to update her entry under Contacts and so far so good. Easy job. Now here is the weird thing: Text messages under "Messages" are still showing her with her old name. I even tried completely deleting all texts and the contact entry under Contacts and recreating her entry. As soon as I texted her to test if it worked, her OLD name showed up under Messaging.
What is going on here? Kinda annoying and not sure if there is an rational explanation why this would happen.
Any feedback or ideas? Should some sort of cache be cleared?
This is for a Z5C with Marshmallow recently upgraded. Stock Firmware. Not rooted.
Thanks in advance,

Nope, this didnt work: first I don't use Google Contacts (phone only) but I did try to search for the entry under Google Contacts (maybe it syncs regardless, I thought) but the entry is not even listed there under Google.
This is definitely something local to the phone I think.
Thanks for the feedback though!

That's interesting, I imagine the local contacts just doesn't play well with its text message counterpart. Should be a z5 problem.
What if you switch to a 3rd party sms app, such as textra?
