anyone'?? if I'm compiling and not cross-compiling (my guess)... so why is asking for that?

It's been some time since I compiled my kernel, but somewhere there's a setting that's making the compiler think you want to cross-compile. Search your files for "arm-none-linux-gnueabi-gcc" and see where that setting is.

Thank you, so You mean that I have to find somewhere in my chroot-system the arm-none-linux-gnueabi-gcc or somewhere in my kernel files that i'm trying to compile?? I've been suffering a lot with this.. I'm trying to compile RTL8187 for my aurora 2 because my onboard wifi isn't working at all so that's why... I need this... =( I have cross-compiled the modules before using ubuntu, but the thing was that Android is ignoring them, so I just can use the browser but can't enter to market , 'cause Android is not detecting my wifi or something. So my guess is that if I compiled this "natively" wifi would function in a better way... thank you for the idea... I will try to search for that setting...

Rebuild Rogers kernel for tethering

I've got Ubuntu up and running and I'm willing to rebuild the kernel to enable tethering.
Problem 1 is that I have not received my Magic yet
Problem 2 is that I have no idea what I need to do
So who wants to help?

I'll help. I've got tethering working using Azilink, but it would be nice to get it working using the Hero's built-in tethering option. Here's my post at ubuntuforums.org:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1202059
So are you rebuilding the kernel to get the iptables? I can't even get to make Ubuntu see the Magic as a communications device now.
It took me about 15 minutes to get the SDK up and running on Ubuntu 32 bit but I don't know where to find the source for the kernel or evena copy of the kernel itself. Once I have those it shouldn't take more than 5 minutes to compile the kernel including iptables. In fact if I had the source to a kernel that does allow tethering it would be even faster because I could just drag and drop what I need into the build directory. I haven't seen the source but I think that the HTC branded kernel only differs by a few files and it might even be easier to move the HTC files to the Google kernel. Need more help and testers.

Do you have the port tools? They allow you to unpack the boot.img. I'll upload the port tools for you:
http://www.mediafire.com/?fnzdtnj4gmy
Just put all of the tools in your /android/tools folder.
To unpack the boot.img, you just have to run this command:
unpack-H.pl boot.img

That's it. Good-luck. Messing around with the kernel is way above my know-how.
@hotweiss thanks a bunch
This guide shows you how to push the IP tables on the Magic:

do I just need to incorprate the iptables binary with the kernel when I build it. Again I haven't seen either kernel to compare them.

Haven't done it myself yet, but it looks like it's just an issue of following a few steps. The biggest problem right now is to make Ubuntu see the Magic as a modem.
again I don't have my magic yet so I can't comment on that but if anyone has a google branded version could you please check and see if you can get ubuntu to recognize it as a modem. if so then we know that it has only to do with the kernel itself.
EDIT: Also I can't get unpack-H.pl to work, i keep getting bash: /home/sammy/android-sdk-linux_x86-1.5_r2/tools/unpack-H.pl: Permission denied

well you dint need go all the steps , just pushing iptables and insmod should be enough if you use wifi tethering app. but is the kernel in htc magic and g1 the same , do they run the same binary ?
i will check it but dont know if it works.
Edit :
No ipfilter in the kernel = not working
the binary itself works just fine (strange)
its because the kernel is missing netfilter too. there are actually 3 things we require for this to work. we need to build netfilter as a module, build iptables as a module and then include the iptables binary so that other programs can talk to it. unfortunately i don't have a magic but if you could pm me your im screen names we could do this faster

Things will be complicated by the fact that the Rogers and T-Mobile Magic's are different. I'm still confident that we'll work it out.

Android Native Linux compiling

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but XDA is really the only place I can figure to ask.
I've been looking for a way to compile linux applications to run on the command line, for instance nano or lynx. I've found the "agcc hello.c -o hello
" method, but the builds I'm trying for are defendant on ./configure.
I've got a working toolchain, and can even compile android itself, and I've got agcc working. I just can't figure out how to get them all working together.
Any help?
In the ./configure, you need to point it to your compiler (i.e. "agcc").
Try "./configure --help" to see the options it is looking for to make this configuration.
I think you have to set up an arm-eabi cross compiler.
You can try the android native development kit:
http://developer.android.com/sdk/ndk/1.5_r1/index.html
I think this is designed to make native components for the normal dalvik android apps, but it may have useful information.

NDK creates libraries that can be called from within native apps (i.e. shared objects). It does not create native executables.
This should help?

I've made a wee bit of progress.
My current set up is this:
Step 1: Download this
Step 2: Push it to /system/sd/usr
Step 3: Remount system AND root partitions, then symlink /system/sd/usr to /usr. Then, mkdir /tmp.
Step 4: Push sources to /system/sd. Change working directory to your extracted source file, then run ./configure --host=armv6l-unknown-linux-gnueabi --with-build-cc=/bin/gcc
Step 5: ????
Step 6: Profit
I'm still working out the bugs here, and I'll report back when I've got something working. Currently, I'm trying to compile GNU Make for Android.
check the apps section i think i rememeber somone already compiling nano for android...
i wanted to compile sshfs but then again there is a lot of things i wanna do... LOL

[Q] Source Code Base to build ROMs for SGS4G

Hello All,
I am new to the android platform. So please forgive if this is too trivial a question.
1. How do I obtain source code for a specific platform and a specific phone?
Is it segregated that way?
2. How do I build ROM and package it to deploy on the phone?
Please provide pointers to these and I am willing to go through the documents/literature. Please help.
Thanks in advance!!

Thanks for the quick response! I have been going over that thread quite extensively but I can't seem to locate threads for
1. How to get the source code for the instrument( SGS4G) ?
2. How to build a complete ROM which is flashable? Basically, How to package it for deployment, like the other developers do on this forum.

You didn't post in the right section, this needs to go in the general section.
You'll need to download the phone's source:
https://opensource.samsung.com/reception/reception_main.do?method=reception_search&searchValue=t959v
You should grab both files there. You'll need to build this on Linux or anything that has G++ for ARM.

Did you ever get it working? I also found Dr. Honk's public git here:

You can see the source for the Bali kernel here:

Tell me how it goes.
FBis251,
Thanks for the resources! Currently I am still trying to get my dev-env setup properly, somehow have some installation/setup issues with the GNU/LINUX ARM toolchain. Meanwhile, I could build the kernel from the android base from source.android.com.
I have the system.img and other files in the out directory. The build went through but with lot of warnings. Here is the buildlog. Please let me know if something is amiss. Thanks!
Assuming the build went fine, I am not quite sure how to load that onto the device. I am trying to run an emulator though....will get back on that.

Have you tried looking at:

Apparently you can just flash the image you just made... Try to see if you can open the .img as a .tar...?

Hi FBis251,
Can you please tell me how did you go about setting up the dev-env(the cross compiling toolchains). Are you using linux( which flavor, I am using Ubuntu 11.04 Natty Narwhal). I have some problems setting up the toolchains...as mentioned in the below link
https://opensource.samsung.com/recep...rchValue=t959v
Any ideas??
The readme from the opensource site says:
Code:
HOW TO BUILD KERNEL
1. Visit http://www.codesourcery.com/, download and install Sourcery G++ Lite 2009q3-68 toolchain for ARM EABI.
2. Extract kernel source and move into the top directory.
3. Execute 'make vibrantplus_rev00_defconfig'.
4. Execute 'make' or 'make -j<n>' where '<n>' is the number of multiple jobs to be invoked simultaneously.
I just googled thw 2009q3-68 version since I couldn't find it on the site after signing up and came across this:
http://www.codesourcery.com/sgpp/lite/arm/portal/release1033
I actually haven't gotten the kernel to compile without errors yet, and I haven't tried building the platform source until later today. You'll have to modify the makefile, look for the variable called CrossCompile and set it to the main /bin folder from the CodeSourcery toolchain.
Should be something like
Code:
CROSS_COMPILE ?= /home/user/CodeSourcery/Sourcery_G++_Lite/bin/arm-none-eabi-
I'll give you more details later, I'm still learning as I go too.
Also, something I came across to speed things up when you do the make, apparently if you have a quadcore processor, you can use make -j 8 (or just multiply however many cores you have by 2) and the compile should run as fast as possible.
Keep me posted.

I followed the procedure mentioned in that readme file, but with additional info from other site,,
I extracted the source code from samsung open source, and then used the toolchain from the android base and it looked like it built(lot of warnings), but i cant find zImage anywhere?Wondering what ever happened during the build,,,
command used: make -j4 ARCH=arm CROSS_COMPILE=/android/prebuilt/linux-x86/toolchain/arm-eabi-4.4.3/bin/arm-eabi- zImage
Build abruptly end, no build logs anything, see file for build output.
Is there anything that I am missing?, Please help!
And, Don't you think the build log is unusually small for a kernel build?? :O

Okay, I got the kernel to compile after getting rid of the
1. "error: 'SEGMENT_SIZE' undeclared" problem, I had to turn on the Make V=1 ( verbose mode) explicitly to get to this point.
2. Next the compilation stopped saying "make[3]: *** No rule to make target `net/ipv4/netfilter/ipt_ecn.o', needed by `net/ipv4/netfilter/built-in.o'."
I had to remove the netfilter support from the kernel. I REALLY did not know how to solve this problem. Now that I have built the zImage( really small compared to the zImage that gets posted around in the forum) I am now concentrating on how get netfilter back into the kernel, for it is an important module for anything to do with TCP/IP security n filtering.
Finally,
3. How do I package this to the phone as a complete bootable ROM? Please help! Thanks in advance!
I found this thread, it might be useful. I can't try it until later though.

Check his website for repo information. Beyond that, its no different than compiling any rom from source.
You should know that you probably will not get anything different than what he has released thus far, that is, unless you have coded your own changes.
Thanks, I will check the link. I believe he has few bug fixes which I need, that's the reason why I wanted to compile it.

Understood. I do know that Paul is neck deep with finals, and other school stuff, so there is no harm in running a compile yourself. I just wanted to make sure you knew what to expect. His repo sync is a tad different from other instructions, i.e. CyanogenMod...but once you get it all pulled down, its essentially the same steps for the compile portion.
Actually I am new to this. All these days I have been only using the ROM's and never tried to compile one. This is my first time and I appreciate your help. The link really helper, I have started syncing the repo, looks like it's going to be a while. I will post if I run into any issues.

I will tell you this...use ccache, its a huge time saver when you need to rebuild after making changes. Also...dedicated build system really is recommended, and without question, the more juice its got, the better.
Here are a couple of links...including a kernel specific one from CyanogenMod's wiki. I use both when I am bored and just want to compile something

Thank you for the links. I got a spare machine and am thinking it is about time I did something productive with it.

The obvious question would be does the folder/file exist?
Code:
$ ls external/stlport/libstlport.mk
external/stlport/libstlport.mk
If it is...type 'env' at your command prompt and see what environment variables are set to see if the external folder should be seen.
Re-run 'source ./build/envsetup.sh', then 'lunch' and choose the tf101-userdebug (or what ever Paul uses now) option listed after running lunch.
See if that helps.
I'm repo sync'ing now- gosh, it takes longer to sync than it does to build. I still have to clone the kernel. I think it's been downloading for 2 hours!
I've actually never flashed this ROM, but that won't stop me from building it
Thanks gVibeR. The external folder exist but the 'stlport' folder does not exist. And I also did not see any option with 'tf101' in it when I run 'lunch'. I tried re-syncing the repo but i ran into out of space error. I did not know where to delete all the earlier repo downloads. This was a brand new Ubuntu installed with 25gig disk space. I will keep looking and let know if I had any luck.

I think you'll need more space than that - once you start building, the directory will swell to over 20gb. For comparison, andromadus(ICS) for the vision is 21g and CM7 (GB) is 18gb.
I'm still downloading, but spark source is at least 11gb and that doesn't include the kernel or the out directory, which will fill up after building.
I think you will need at least 25gb for the build plus whatever for ubuntu. If you are hard up for space, you can install one of the server versions of ubuntu, which doesn't include the GUI (~1.5gb).
The repo files are stored in .repo, which will be hidden. Use ls -a to see it, although I think it manages and discards old commits.
Thanks gee one, I have more than enough space, just thought 25gig should be fine. I will install Ubuntu again with more space and give it a try. Let me know how it goes for you, please post if you got any issues and resolved it.

[Resolved] Compiling Android USB Gadget drivers and insmod

Hi everyone,
I have been trying for quite a while now to compile HID Gadget support for my galaxy S3 and think i may be getting close. My current problem is that when i run insmod g_hid.ko i receive the following
Code:
insmod: init_module 'g_hid.ko' failed (Device or resource busy)
. The weird thing is that next time the screen turns off or if i attempt to insert it again the phone crashes (kernel panic i assume). I get this same error when i try and insmod g_zero.ko (although this one doesn't kill the phone). Can anyone tell me how i would attempt to debug this? Or even better, has anyone got g_hid working on there phone and if so, what modifications/kernel configs did you use?
Also, when compiling the kernel, in "USB gadget support" if i select any option other than Android Gadget in USB Gadget Drivers my kernel fails to build. Has anyone got any USB gadgets to compile and run and if so what procedure/modifications did you have to make. Currently i am compiling my kernel with android gadget selected as the usb gadget driver and then changing it to HID module and running make module_prepair and make module to get my .ko files (which may be why i am getting the above error).
If anyone can provide some insite and advice it would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
Adrian
After months of trying, it appears i have got it solved. Unfortunately its not the most graceful solution and currently it disables MTP but i dont care. To fix it i searched every file in the kernel for mentions of CONFIG_USB_G_ANDROID and everywhere it was involved in an #if defined statement i added another section like so
Code:
#if defined(CONFIG_USB_ANDROID) || defined(CONFIG_USB_G_ANDROID) || defined(CONFIG_USB_S3C_OTGD)
In this case i added USB_S3C_OTG. As i said, it isn't pretty but it works.
Hope this helps someone in the future coz there is very little info on the net about this
Enjoy
Adrian

I asked a question on Stack Overflow about exactly this issue. There is a small group of people who seem quite interested in this issue, and there really is not a lot of information on the net.
I would very much appreciate if you could explain in a little more detail what steps you took to get this to work for you. You could probably answer the Stack Overflow question more decisively than the current answers too: stack-overflow questions/9805731 - is-it-possible-to-program-android-to-act-as-physical-usb-keyboard. #if defined(CONFIG_USB_ANDROID) || defined(CONFIG_USB_G_ANDROID) || defined(CONFIG_USB_S3C_OTGD)
In this case i added USB_S3C_OTG. As i said, it isn't pretty but it works.
Hope this helps someone in the future coz there is very little info on the net about this
Enjoy
Adrian

No worries, im happy to help. The funny thing is by reading the answers you got it started me on the right path to finding a solution. Im not sure how this will translate to other devices firmware but in the case of the galaxy S3 it was i went threw every file and added the
Code:
|| defined(CONFIG_USB_S3C_OTGD)
to all if defined statement that made any mention of CONFIG_USB_GADGET so that the code inside would be compiled. This was so that in the .config file for the kernel CONFIG_USB_GADGET would be set to yes and would then allow the hid driver to be compiled. Basically every time i got an error i saying something wasn't compiled or wasn't declared i went to that file, found where it was declared and added that if defined statement. I would upload my working source code but it would take weeks on my internet connection. If there is a specific file you want to see then let me know and i will post its contents.
Good luck

Hi Adrian
did you manage to use your android phone as a keyboard with USB_H_HID module ? I'm trying to do the same thing and I would be interested if you have more informations. For now, I had cyanogendmod source for Samsung Galaxy S III and I've compiled the default 10.1 ROM.
Yesterday, I tried to modify kernel options to include USB_H_HID in the kernel but the build fails on some android.c error.
See you

Hi Thus0
I did manage to get it to work late last year (Just so you know that it can be done). From memory i basically ran grep over every file in the modules directory looking for CONFIG_USB_GADGET and then edited those files to say something like:
#if defined(CONFIG_USB_ANDROID) || defined(CONFIG_USB_G_ANDROID) || defined(CONFIG_USB_S3C_OTGD)
This way it would compile the USB Gadget modules as well. Let em know if you have any more questions and ill try and help.
