[Q] Enable GLONASS/ГЛОНАСС on HTC Sensation XE running CM9
I downloaded the "GPS Test" app to see if my phone can use GLONASS as well as GPS.
Answer is, it can't, for whatever reason. It's an HTC Sensation XE which I've put CM9 (9.1.0-pyramid) on.
I know that GLONASS satellites are available where we live as my wife's Galaxy SIII (as purchased, no ROM or firmware changes, same network as me) can use them alongside GPS.
What I want to know, is if there's anything I can change to enable GLONASS, or if I just have to install a different ROM?
GLONASS is not enabled in the radio firmware, there is nothing you can do about it.

So, to check I've got this right, someone would have to create a version of the radio firmware which did have GLONASS enabled, which would then have to overwrite the version on the phone?
(I don't think I'll do this, just in case it bricks the phone - at least I know to avoid HTC in the future.)
Avoid HTC because of GLONASS?

Not just because of that, but refusing to enable it even though the chip supports it is indicative of a company showing a lack of customer care.
Any reason for your extreme need of using GLONASS?
Understand that its accuracy is slightly worse than GPS. Only in high latitudes (very north or south) it works better than GPS.

No extreme need, I'd just like more satellites available (as far as I understand it, using both sets of satellites is more accurate than just one) as it seems my wife's phone (which has both) gets more accuracy than mine.
I certainly don't want to stop using GPS.

I bought sygic aura. He finds everything, points of interest, addresses, petrol stations, shops but my current location three blocks differs from the actual location. Even when I'm in the car nothing happens. My arrow is not with me. What is the problem here? is because the GPS is not designed for the HTC HD mini android?

no there is something with my gps. it worked always no problems, but now for about 3 months my htc don't have any signal, even on WINDOWS MOBILE No signal. so i let it be , just wait 8 months than can i go for a new phone. . I now used my nokia N95 for navigation
Which WinMo ROM do you have? Have you changed it 3 months ago?
no , i had the lastest winmo version, now the oldest because i used a hard reset. so i guess i have on this moment the oldest. but i had this one a while ago : _HTC HD Mini_RUU_Photon_HTC_NLD_1.36.404.1_Radio_Signed_32.2803.05.06_0.63.05.36_Ship
For GPS issues, the first post in the tutorial "Install Android on HTC HD Mini" under the heading of known issues states in red font: GPS software in WM will not find satellites if you turn off GPS from location settings in Android
You should try the solution that is detailed in this thread. You have to follow this step even if you reflash any WM6.5 stock ROMS because reflashing won't fix the GPS issue. I know this from experience.
It is also discussed at length here
It is assumed you are using the latest build of Android for HD Mini. If there are continued issues, try a completely clean install (remove all old Android files from your SD card). If you still can't get GPS (both in Android and WM6.5), then maybe consider it is a hardware fault.

im sure it's a hardware fault. i have yesterday buy a adapt bluetooth gps and it is working fine. Fast fix even in the house. I think my internal GPS is dead. I used a lot . Almost 4 hours a day, 1 year long.

I guess drivers are different for a BT GPS when compared to the internal one. So if the BT works, it does not ay anything about the internal gps?

I would say if you do a hard reset in WiMo then you should see at least some satellites. Did you also try the app androsensor in Android? That tells you the status of all sensors, including the gps (i.e. location and number of sats). In that case you don't need a program like Sygic to check it. It works quite nice. Maybe worth checking?

looks bad. I understood you opened the device since you had issues with the proximity sensor? Are you sure you didnot damage any antenna cable or connector? I know there are 2 of them that are quite vulnerable, don't know where they are for.

unfortunately, no, unless you have s-off with a *working* clockwork mod and recovery
its a script in a zip file that needs to be flashed before android loads
Yes, won't work for now.
Maybe you can use A-GPS injector, I use it, don't know if GPS is really faster to aquire with this app, since for me, the Sensation is really fast to get satellites signal, muuuch faster than my HD2

Not sure what problem you're trying to fix. I just watched the video linked in that post supposedly showing the script working and it's worse than my Sensation works out of the box. It took 29s to lock and the accuracy never got better than 36 ft. I usually get a lock in 10s or less and the accuracy gets down to 9-12 ft.
Can't answer your question about whether it's doable now.
I just realized that GPS reciever of desire S is not working when I stay in my room. But Sumsung Galaxy S Advance is working very well in my room. Does anyone know how to improve HTC Desire S's GPS reciever indoor performance ?
See screen capture. I capture while I'm in side my house but It's appear about 400m from my current location and I have been waiting for 5 minutes to get the GPS reciever working.

try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1442032 it works for me.
i did manage to get a signal immediately right after i installed it from inside my house in front of my pc. Was not able to produce the same result twice(didn't really wait long enuf to test as i dun need gps in my house). But i have to say that this improve my signal lock tremendously.
and i think gps not able to lock on while in a house is not really an issue :cyclops:
cheers
Desire S GPS is precise, but weak, and won't work well indoors.

To test ur gps it should be outdoor in an open field, not inside brick wall. Is like testing ur mobile radio in an elevator and asking why can't i receive any reception inside here
But how is it when you are outdoor? Any improvement on the gps-lock?
GPS generally isn´t recommend for indoors, and it doesnt have sense to use GPS indoors.
Have no problem
I have no problem for outdoor It take just 10 seconds to lock.

WTF are you playing at dude?
Why are you re-opening an old thread (From September last year) in the Dev forum just to ask the same damn question you keep asking in here?
You have been told repeatedly that GPS is NOT designed for indoor use. You have confirmed that your GPS works fine outside. What is your problem? If you are indoors then you surely know where you are - it's not as if GPS is going to help you find the toilet, or find your arse
The Dev forum is for Development - not for pointless questions.
So you mean I'm damn... Ok I'm damn but. Why I can get Samsung Gallaxy S Advances work in door perfectly but not Desire S? What make sense to me is If it work in a house or building is benefit of finding and also can provide us a location where we can find each other easy.... Also maybe you can find my ass also.

Because the Desire S has a weak GPS antenna design. Everybody here knows that - it has been discussed to death. The thread you re-opened states that and the reasons for it, along with a possible hardware fix if you want to try a bit of soldering.

How about you are trying to check in or create new location(accurately) on facebook or google + you have to go outside building for just that reason? It's waste time...
Hi there,
I've made a search about the issue, and there are a few loose threads about this subject, but without convincing answers and definite solutions.
With that in mind, my problem is that the GPS in my HTC Sensation has not been working properly for some time now. It can be switched on, and it may remain searching for a signal for endless periods without success...
As anyone experience the same problem? And if yes, how have you sorted out the issue?
Also, it's important to say that I want the GPS to work in the absence of any data transfer from the network provider, for those occasions where I am "out in the wild" and want to check where I am on maps... and yes, it can be infuriating to be walking and waiting for a signal and nothing....
So, to all those who have the sensation, have you experience the same problem? And how have you managed to fix it?
Thanks
(also, I am using the CM v10-20130526 , the 4.1.2, with kernel version 3.0.53)

Oh boy, that is because all and none of those work. Depends on the individual phone, location, rom, etc. Try a few and check.
Best bet for me was to change roms

What change was made to make GPS work?
Hello, I hope someone is still subscribed to this conversation.
I have an HTC Sensation XE with an non-functional GPS.
My phone is a UK phone that I am using in California. The phone function works fine and other apps but cannot lock on any GPS satellite.
The US uses Eris GPS, not the same in Europe. Has anyone changed the software to make this work?
Hi people i don't have n5 (collecting some gold for the device). It is possible to use only gps or only glonass system? I heard about glonass is much better and find faster than gps system. On menu settings it is only on/off toggle. It will be possible to getbtoggle like for data like 2g, 3g or mixed mode? Maybe it will be a kernel feature or sth.

*Bump*
Guys, can someone expalin how it works or it is possible to select which sattelite system i want to use? Between gps and glonass.
just sent via tapatalk
No. It just uses both. Glonass enhances GPS as far as I can tell
Sent from my Nexus 5 using Tapatalk
rootSU is correct. You can't select one or the other... They work together to give you better accuracy and coverage.
GPS has 31 satellite's in orbit.
Glonass has 24 satellite's in orbit.
Therefore if you could use glonass independently your coverage wouldn't be as strong as GPS and since it was designed by Russia, glonass is more useful in northern latitudes.
The nice thing is since they work together your device is able to be pinned by 55 satellite's, instead of either 31 or 24 satellite's and if your in an area where GPS is stuck or blocked, the device will switch to glonass.
Thanks guys for responding and wrote what i want to know. I have bad experience with my old htc desire and its very slow gps searching (some fixes not work). Best regards

The funny thing that I see with GPS TEST etc is that after a minute or so you only see the US GPS sats. Seems that it uses Glonass to lock quicker and when the GPS signal is getting worse it will use Glonass to help.
I've also read this on a Sony paper
'To save power, the GLONASS receiver is only activated in problematic locations, such as in an urban environment with high rise buildings. Therefore, if you are in an open sky environment where there are enough GPS satellites available to calculate a good accuracy position, GLONASS will automatically be switched off temporarily to enhance the battery lifetime.
So the next time you’re having problems getting a fix on your location, use an Xperia™ smartphone supporting GLONASS to get faster and more accurate location information.'
