Silly rooting question. - Captivate General

So I'm wondering if there is an easy way to root from the phone? Or any way for that matter. I'm on a cappy with stock 2.3.5 and wow it sucks. Its my wife's phone as I soft bricked my phone trying to flash helly bean over firefly 3.0. I'm guessing I didn't have the gb bootloaders. Though with this phone I do have them and should be able to easily flash helly bean with no problems once its rooted and I flash the proper kernal.

I always go to 4-2ndtwin's helpful links in his signature and use either Odin or Heimdall to install a kernel that will allow you to flash roms. Then you can just boot into recovery and flash.
I think there is a mobile odin on the market.

Ill look for mobile Odin.

Odin requires root. Is there a way to root from the phone?

No, you dont need root to use odin. Make sure you read up and find instructions. Flash a kernel with root and apply via CWM and there you go.

Mobile Odin does require Root.
And nope, no way to Root just from phone.
But there is no need to get Root if u r just gonna flash a Rom anyway. U will however need to use Odin or Heimdall to flash a kernel with the CWM Recovery baked in. (i recommend KK4 Corn Kernel v7.0A ). Once u have flashed that kernel, just use button combo to reboot into cwm and then install ur Rom of choice that u should have already copied on ur phone. Success

[Q] Where is "vanilla" ODIN?

I've been cruising around this forum for a couple hours and I see roms to flash via ODIN and deodexed and rooted stock, but no plain-jane out of the box ODIN.
Am I missing something? In the Captivate forum it was easy to find.
ODIN isnt a rom its simply a program/tool used to flash kernels, I recommend you use whitwhawxk's stock kd1 but it is rooted and deodexed (which are good things anyway)

Don't worry I do know that, lol. Not a complete noob.
I'm more concerned with UNROOTING to out of the box state for warranty or resale scenarios or to update via kies mini.
In the Captivate forum the plain Jane Odin was easy to find.
Thanks for your response.

So is that the official unroot method so far? Flash the rooted stock and use SOC to unroot?
Will that result in a perfect out of the box state?
Also haven't been able to find kies on the samsung website. Do I have to register before they'll let me download it?

@bigdog736
Your post tells me nothing about whether or not you are rooted already.
Just in case you aren't, you need root access, and CWM installed.
I'll provide you with the links.
You'll need this tool to flash the root to your phone. It's called Odin.
Download here:
Odin Flashing Utility
Now download this ROM and flash it using Odin. It will root your device:
ED01 Stock Rooted
Now, download the CWM and flash it using Odin. This is the custom recovery:
CWM
Now, with root access, and CWM installed, you should not have any problems installing a new custom ROM.
You want GummyCharged 2.0? Well just to insure that you downloaded it from the right source, I will provide a link for that too:
GummyCharged 2.0
Again, if you are already rooted and have CWM installed, sorry for wasting your reading time. Your post just didn't give me ANY information, so I just assume that you aren't rooted.

[Q] what recovery is use

for my phone i try the CWM from rom manager, but my recovery have the samsung recovery ? @[email protected]? and i has seen other talking bout cwd dont work and then im not sure but something call kG4 ??
i rooted my phone with the superone click but i cant get a recovery so i can flash ROMs on my phone ??
I recommend you to ODIN one of the customize ROM or KERNEL in the development session first to get the CWM ( most of the case it was integrated to the ROM or kernel) then you can flash any ROM you want.
Or use the cwm final thread in the dev section.

Yikes dude. Just follow the many guides on the Bible... It can't get any easier than those guides. Use Odin to get CWM via Dr. Honks kernel.

[Q] [Kies]New Firmeware Available?

Hey guys. I have a rooted Galaxy S blaze and i am running on the stock t-moible rom. I didnt install clockmod recovery or anything like that, I installed Kies on my laptop and i saw it said new firmware was available. Can i install this or do i need to be unrooted??
