It's Just Wrong - Thunderbolt General

Last night my wife and I had dinner at one of our favorite restaurants. I have never had ANY data reception there in my OG Droid Nor in any rom on any radio in my Tbolt (and I've been on many). I had to ask her to use her iPhone 4s last night to look up something while there. Her 3G was 3 bars and worked fine.
I hate iPhone UI, file management, screen shape, lack of widgets etc. and would never consider buying one....but it was humiliating to actually have to ask to use an iPhone to get data....and yes we are both VZW.
Come on Android...do something about it!

Well anything before Thunderbolt is out dated. You can compare your OG droid's to the iPhone 3S or even iPhone 3 which, more than likely, wouldn't have reception either.
As for the Thunderbolt, it was a fail device. Don't expect much out of it.

That's funny because my wife's iPhone 4s usually doesn't get reception where my thunderbolt does.

Try Kitty's in North Reading, MA and see how you make out! I had always thought iPhone had lousy reception. My tbolt has better reception than my friend's sisters 3GS and and way better than his Nexus so it isn't that tbolt sucks. It's that her iPhone has better reception and I I said that is just wrong!

Of course it is 3G only area but imo it is unacceptable for iPhone to get better reception than android anywhere any time. It means android manufacturers are letting us down. Our phone used to have MUCH better reception than iPhone but maybe that was just vzw vs att.

Dude, you have to go Lion King on it, and do it with pride.

One time in the forest, I had reception with my TB.
My friend and his crappy Sprint iphone had no reception.
He had to borrow my phone.
So embarrassing for him!!!

At my sister's house my bolt and my dad's iPhone can't get any reception, but my brother-in-law's blackberry has no problem. Go figure that one.

Having used BlackBerry for a while, they do have great reception compared to anything else I've use.
But that's about the ONLY benefit to using a BB anymore lol...so glad I ditched that mess.

Just got a new Razr Maxx HD last week. Paid full price to keep unlimited data.
Last night my wife and I returned to the scene of the crime, Kitty's Restaurant. I was anxious to see if the new Moto would fare better than my Tbolt against the evil empire (iPhone 4S). My heart sank as I whipped out my Maxx and saw 1 limp bar in the signal icon..... BUT REJOICE! I tried surfing the web and my Razr sliced through internet from one site to another... Then watched some full screen You Tube all in 3G!
All is right in the world.

Lol!! I disliked the Droid MAXX screen color and Moto Blur UI so I returned it and bought a DINC 4G but miss the bigger screen and slightly larger keyboard so I can type faster.
Hope you enjoy your DMAXX. Is it against forum rules to ask what you're gonna do with your TBolt?

I've posted in another thread I am keeping it in my bedroom on wifi. It will be an alarm clock\weather app\email viewer, etc.
This way I can continue to play with new Tbolt roms. I doubt I will root the maxx hd since there is no way to install custom recovery nor create nandroids. I would have sold my Tbolt but it's in great condition and used ones are selling for peanuts on ebay. I still have my OG Droid too although it was just retired from bedroom duty.

Just in case anybody has this problem in the future, the antenna is in the battery back. This means if the back isn't on correctly or is defective you will get poor/no service. You can buy replacement doors for a few bucks online, and yes I have personally seen a defective back.

I have no problem. I had good coverage in most locations. Kitty's is just a bad spot. I have 2 different battery covers a d get similar service from both. I actually thought I had great reception until my wife's iPhone beat me out.

SO, do you REALLY love your THUNDER bolt???

I just had to ask you guys/girls. I went to the store and this old lady in a wheel chair told the sales guy " I want the thunderbolt, where is it?" This thing is HOT?
I love it. Really a good phone...
I don't get 4G here so I think it's alright. Not the best. I'm coming from TMO and had a G2. I hate the battery life on this phone. It idles at 100+ma with the screen off as appose to my G2 which was around 30ma and my Nexus One at 3ma. But the display is really nice. I guess I'm just remorseful for leaving TMO.
Edit: just realized that all the other g2 find I was comparing this to had custom kernels so its unfair to compare both.
Phone is awesome, definitely worth the cash

How do you measure that? Also, you can turn off 4g if its not available in your area.
I like the phone...but seeing how I am right on the line for 3g and 4g, I have yet to be able to fully experience the speed possiblities. The problem I have is battery life, coming from TMO and a Vibrant and an HD2, both which were far better. I'm still experimenting with settings however, and i'm sure once I root, and a few custom ROM's come out, it will be tons better. Nothing but good things can come from a piece of equipment like this.
I love most of it.. There are minor annoyances, but I don't think I've ever owned a "perfect phone". I've gone past the point of no turning back (returns) and I'm happy about it.
I left T-Mobile this past Sunday. After I heard the news of AT&T buying them out, I knew I had to move on. I was using the Galaxy S 4G, which now for sale.
Anyway, I feel that I made the right move. I really love the Thunderbolt very much! None of the phones @ TMO has anything on this bad boy. Can't even tell you how much faster the TB is over any of the 4G phones I had on TMO.
Yes I know Battery Sucks, but Cant Expect Good Gas Mileage out of a ferrari... I can look at other phones and specs, but I have tried everything, and there isnt anything that this phone doesnt do.
And of course the 2 biggest reasons for me getting it:
- LTE, amazing in Orlando, Fl
- Talk and Surf, I literally needed this, and use it a lot when I drive with maps and talking.

I recently sold my iphone 4 (att) and converted to android. This is my first handset. I have been LOOOOOVVVVIIINNNGGGGGG this phone. Now that i can set my phone to stay on 3g or 4g battery has improved much and the LTE speeds ive gotten in NYC are amazing. Was bored of iOS. Really loving the tinkering with this phone. Now waiting for that easy root and cyanogen Gingerbread ROM
I am in love.

Im picking up my thunderbolt tomorrow from work, and im not going to look back anymore. I do miss my G2 and wish i coulda used it for Verizon, but whatevs.
A lil FYI guys!
My settings currently:
LTE only
extended battery
11 hrs off charger
47% battery left. being using it a pretty good amount also. Seems cdma/lte must be what is hurting battery life.
P.S. - yes i love my thunderbolt and could never imagine returning it for a bionic or anything else in the near future honestly.
Absolutely happy, great phone, network, and best community. Can't wait for future updates! More to come!

Well, I just rooted (ADB Method), went perfectly, debloated, running MikRom's Perfect Storm (seems great so far), and I am tethering my laptop using wifi tether and getting ridiculous speeds. Yes, I think I love my Thunderbolt!
Only thing that could make me happier about this phone is if android had as many quality apps and games as iOS.

Yeah I love it, it was worth the wait and I'm not even in a 4G area but its what i wanted, screen size, processor, ram all to my liking and I'm anti Moto now because of eFUSE with the DX and such. X was gonna be my choice but I canceled that pre-order when I heard about the eFUSE. So HTC it is and Tbolt is just to my liking. Rooted in under 5 days and running VirusROM R1B2 and loving it.

Advice if you don't mind

I'm debating on gettin rid of my jailbroken iPhone 4 for a inspire.
Should I hold off on the inspire for something better coming out?
I enjoy my iPhone Alot and my battery life lol but I can't make my mind up.
User there is some dev support already for the inspire which is a huge plus for me, but I'm getting tired of the small size of the iPhone and it's limits to customizing.
What do you guys think?
Also I came from a rooted Aria and Captivate before I went to the iPhone

this is definitely a great phone. you may want to hold off until a better htc phone comes out with either of the two: dual-core 1ghz or better, front facing camera. If the inspire had both of those, this would be the most beastly phone on the market. if you're okay without both of those, then the inspire is for you. sense is awesome - lots of custom roms with and without - all are quick too! i got used to the size of the phone quickly after getting it and i LOVE LOVE LOVE this phone now. hope you make the right choice for yourself
Coming from the POC Captivate, this phone is awesome!
I do wish it had a front camera though, but not sure when I'd use it...it's plenty speedy though in stock form, much faster than the Captivate.
Dual core would be nice, but I had the Atrix and it didn't seem faster. I think it's all about coding and what you want it to do.
A co-worker of mine is an iPhone to Android user now.. he is happy overall, but does complain about the battery..
I am stock and easily get 2 days of normal usage. Not sure how long the iPhone lasts compared to the Inspire, but I think you'll be happy with this phone. I too came from the Captivate, and am much happier with HTC. Gps is flawless, screen size is perfect for my man hands, build quality is great (except for the darn battery cover )
I say go into a corp ATT store and play with the Inspire for 15 min.. awesome phone IMO.

If I'm not mistaking the sim card for a iPhone is a micro one so you will need to go get a new one and the plans I THINK are the same but you will just have to move to the smartphone plan not the iPhone plan

HTC has no plans for a upcoming phone for at&t. My inspire runs super fast and games and video streaming is beautiful. So a dual core is mainly for speed. Y need more speed if the HTC is super fast? And I would never use the front facing camera. I mean really. I got a Mac for that.

I'd say hold off and see the infuse4g. I'm leery about samsung after the craptivate fiasco but the infuse is getting great reviews from engadget (while they aren't perfect I do find them to be pretty good overall) and I dont know about you but the extra .2" of screen might actually make a big difference, I know the .3" of screen between captivate and inspire were super nice. I will tell you while the captivate had more metal parts the HTC feels better built (except that damn battery cover everyone keeps mentioning, really HTC, what were you thinking?!)
There's no wrong answer when you switch from iphone to android, it's like going from a mud pie to filet mignon, even if it's bad filet mignon it's better than what you had!
And may wanna see what to see if bootloader is locked

Kinda wanting to stay away from the infuse as well as samsung and the bs they put us through with the captivate, I'm headin to a store now to go play with the inspire

Well if you are ATT only I would either stay with the iphone 4 or get the inspire.
This dual core thing is not proven yet. I have not seen one phone that is dual core that is awesome. I am sure I and everyone else will want one in 6 months to a year but right now there is nothing impresive about them. Att only has one other dual core that I have read about coming and its an LG....No Thanks...
Just got done Playing with one at the store, the size would take getting used to.
Seemed sluggish here and there but it's a store phone..and the fact it didn't have any Internet connectivity sucked.
And the captivate next to it was running 2.2 what a pos haha.
Overall it seems really nice, well constructed, pretty smooth as far as animation went.
Now here's the hard part, I can easily find an Inspire on CL to trade my i4 for, but how much cash do I want?

The demo phone didn't have a SIM with a data connection? Ridiculous. They should've at least had it connected to wi-fi.
BTW, Best Buy has the Inspire for cheaper than AT&T. It is $79 there (w/ 2 year contract of course).

[Q] Should I buy a TB out of contract?

I am really really sick of this Droid 2 that VZW replaced my Droid with. I'm sick of Moto services invading my phone and slowing it down. There's no true ASOP build. This phone sucks balls.
I was set on buying an Incredible 2 OoC b/c it was cheap at $440 and saving my upgrade till later, but where I'm moving to next week already has LTE towers.
Do I really want to wait 2 months using this laggy trash? And possibly end up getting a TB anyway because the other phones coming out suck.
Or do I want to get a TB and save my upgrade till later in the Q4 2011/Q1 2012 when NFC Ice Cream Sandwich phones come out.
Don't want a Charge, poor build material choices.
Don't want a Revolution. Bing...
Does it really matter? Not really... You just root and you can put whatever you want and however you want.
Motorola tends to lock their bootloaders and make it hard to do what you want.
Samsung stated that they'll never lock it that way(Not in those words, but given the sense that they will leave it open)
HTC has been locking down their devices, but not as tough as Motorola does.
So basically pick a device with the hardware you want, and make sure it's root and you can install custom roms/kernels.
The T-Bolt is a great phone, and it has excellent community support. I have absolutely no complaints about my phone (aside from the battery life).
That being said, the Galaxy S II that's coming out looks sexy as hell. It might be worth the wait to hold out for that. Honestly, it's totally up to you.
There was talk about tiered 4G plans, which is what made me opt for the early upgrade to the T-Bolt (hoping to be grandfathered in to unlimited 4G). I haven't heard much on that front, but it's still a possibility.
wait a few months
from everything i've ever read about samsung phones, their software support is absolutely horrible. slow updates, faulty gps etc. i've heard a ton of people complain about the issue, and it seems to be the case with all their phones... never had one, but that's the impression i get.
the thunderbolt is a decent phone, but all it really has over the droid x is 4g. the t-bolt screen might be a little better, but not much. in day to day use it's not faster, the battery isn't even close and the build quality of the DX is equal or better. if i were you i would pick up a DX on craigslist for $175 and save your upgrade for a few months. The dx has even more dev support than the T-bolt and it's the best phone I ever had.
bottom line is, if you really want 4g speeds right now, really really bad, then get the thunderbolt. if you can do without that for awhile i think you will be really happy with a DX, especially after using the Droid 2, and you'll spend less than half the money.
the above is just my .02.
Show me a HTC or Motorola phone with latest software on it
Not you fat Jesus
I bought mine off contract and am very happy I did it. Yes there are a few issues, but nothing a little root cant fix.
Though waiting a few months for a better phone won't hurt, the TB is a great choice.

I just have to say that this cracks me up every time I see you post it.
Once you get a taste of 4G, you will never want a phone that is 3G only. So if you are moving to 4G area and don't want to pay full retail, I suggest you get a used Tbolt from craigslist and use it until something comes along that you like better, then sell the Tbolt
i love my TB, i have it rooted with das bamf NTE 1.6.3 and its about the coolest thing since MP3s.. as with others, the battery life on this thing is fkin AWFUL!! i have the extended battery and i still dont feel like its enough, however i use my phone probably more than i should or more than others. either way the LTE network is retarded fast and i'd never want 3g.
First off I just want to say I owned a droid 2 and it wasn't that bad. I jumped to the thunderbolt just to lock in the 4g rate. The bigger screen is a nice plus but other than that is the same thing. I wasn't overly impressed as other owners of the droid x and 2 have stated is not that big of a jump.
Before I end let me just say other than software wise android phones are exactly where I want them. I don't need a dual core chip in my phone and 4g is. good enough for anything I would ever want to do with my phone. I'm sure most of you will disagree but that's just how I feel. Flame away!

I picked up a TB on craigslist for $350. The custom roms still seem a bit premature, however they should evolve over time. Nonetheless it's an amazing phone. If you have a desk job or spend a lot of time in your car, the battery life is not much of an issue. Just stay plugged in.
Got my TB off Craigslist for a fascinate trade plus 150$. I love it so far.. 4g is amazing..once you.have it you won't want to go back.
Roms are not bad. I'm waiting for a complete cm7 or sense 3.0 rom but other than that das bamf runs fantastic.
If you have the cash and want a great phone with a growing dev community, go for it.

Thank you for all the input.
It's funny the other 2 forums told me I'm a moron and this one says Buy a TB!!!
I use over 2GB of data a month so the 4G unlimited (Hopefully grandfathered for life) makes it very tempting since my upgrade isn't till mid July which is around the time the rumors of tiered data plans landing. I'm also not to optimistic about an actual new phone coming out then. Maybe the SGSII but I really hate the fact that it doesnt have a search button. It's a damn Google phone and I use the search button all the time, for GOOGLE, not Bing!
I didn't even think about craigslist. That might be a good option.
As for a cheap DX. No way. It basically is a D2 minus the keyboard. I like the keyboard, I can sacrifice it for a 4G newish phone but not for an X. and I hate the Blur invasion, and locked bootloader. My D2 has been running custom roms. They're just too laggy and buggy still. Fab, Kejar, and Rummy are awesome, but they all had DXs and the D2 ports were just not good. Most of it I blame on Blur still having to be in there. I've been running GB stock blur and custom and for the first time since my D1 ADW launcher gets kicked out of memory and has to reload when I hit home.... I hate it.

My gf just got a dx2 as a replacement for her fascinate. It's a nice device out of the box. I easily prefer my t-bolt with a nice Rom though. So what I'm saying is if you are looking for a stock experience and don't care about 4g than a dx2 wouldn't be a bad choice. There seems to be little if any developing for the dx2 so it wouldn't be my choice. The dual core isn't as impressive as you might think, although I did notice a little less lag using the camera.

I sell phones at Verizon and I would be lying if I didn't say that I steer people towards the Bolt. That being said I have used all 3 extensively on my down time and my preference really comes down to which has the most support...bolt.

+1 i agree as a rep my self i do rather like the AMOLED screen on the Charge but the dev community for the thunderbolt is what keeps me going
So what happens when a Verizon rep gets caught on a rooted tbolt?
they dont care as long as we are not promoteing it or even talking about it in store since it technically voids warranty. It is our device we can do what we want with it. i show mine to my bosses all the time and are just shocked at the improvments that have been made to it.
x2 if you don't want/need 4G (but trust me, once you see it, you'll want it). Charge if you prefer amoled display & don't mind Touchwiz & you're not a flash addict. Tbolt if you like to try different roms & kernels. Among the 3 phones you listed, the Tbolt dev community is most active

look at the speedtest in my sig. That is all the upgrade you need!!!
Faced with a similar decision and went with the bolt. Thrilled that I did. Great dev community and love the phone. 4g when I have it is sweet. Family members just got the x2 and in comparison to my bolt with Th3ory on it, the x2 feels wicked slow even with 2 cores behind it
If you don't care about rooting and different roms get charge. That display is gorgeous! Otherwise bolt. Forget about a 3G phone...
X2 was outdated before it came out. no 4g.
now if you really want a huge community go with thunderbolt
if you really reallly like touchwiz go for the charge
oh and if your afraid the thunderbolt isnt an update from the incredible? you'd be sorely mistaken. I used to have the incredible and this is so much better. processor is much stronger (can oc to 1.9) and the ram on this makes it run smooth as butter.
I personally think the Thunderbolt is a gorgeous phone. Loved it since the moment I got it. 4G everywhere allows me to download any new ROM's (200+ MB) in a matter of minutes. Community is damn near booming. Its a great phone, definitely will be sticking with it for a long time.

I don't show customers my Bolt just the demo one HTC sent, they don't mind as long as I'm not telling a customer about rooting.

I went with the last week when my girlfriend and I moved to our own plan. Took it back 2 days later and got the thunderbolt... Best Decision Ever.. lol
Charge honestly felt like a downgrade from my Droid X... even with the 4G
Thunderbolt feels sturdy, charge... not so much
Charge screen is definitely more "vivid" but I feel that the thunderbolts screen was a step up from the droid x..
So while the Charges screen was pretty nice.. thunderbolt is still enough for me..
As far as battery life goes.. I know I only really had the charge for a day.. but compared to my first day with the thunderbolt the phones were relatively equal for me
In the end.. i say tbolt... but its all in personal preference.. never played with an X2

what can i do with my retired thunderbolt?

ok so i have the siii and i retired the thunderbolt. personally i think the t-bolt was a great performer over the last 2 yrs. wondering how i might be able to creatively utilize it now. (no i won't be using it as a hockey puck!)
thanks for your thoughts
Give it to me you can use it as a back up phone or maybe just use it to flash different roms and mods and such, ya know whatever

Nothing too earth shattering.

I use mine when I do yardwork. Keeps my s3 from getting abused by dust and power tools.

I'm in the same boat as you.....have an SIII now and my Bolt is just sitting in my desk drawer. So far I have used it around the house sometimes on wifi, since I have unlimited data and my main internet source is tethering via my SIII I cannot move it from my window because that is the best LTE reception.....
For me, my Droid Incredible 2 has now become the Android equivalent of an iPod. Still have all the apps, works great on wifi in the house. The coolest thing is that it actually has the cell electronics so it could be used for an emergency call.

I put my HTC Incredible 4G into airplane mode and make it my MP3 player..
other than that it's basically a great backup phone, it's in my care and if i break my phone, i just pop in the SIM into the inc4 and I'm on my way.
Other than that, they are great to give to, brothers/sisters. and your parents (if you keep good care of the phone, lol) I always call for a refurb about a week before my 1 year warranty ends so I have a fresh phone, yes I knoww I suck, sorry. It's also great for WI-Fi around the house/office/tethering if need be, instead of eating up your battery playing games I usually will bust out the inc4 to watch TV and play Facebook poker. I'm not very interested in phones any bigger than the S3iii, I HATED the feel of the HTC DNA even though it's only .2 bigger than our phone but it really made such a difference, perhaps was the weight of the DNA.
I'm going to be lost in a year when my upgrade is due for either the sg4 of an HTC phone that's smaller than the 5' DNA (praying for an HTC One variant, 4.7' screen.. perfect.)
sorry for rant all
-- I thought EVERY cell phone could make a 911 call? Any old dumb phone laying around the house, so if those can, you'd think a smartphone would be smart enough to have that life threatening feature

throw it at a homeless person??!?!
sell it on craigslist? gazelle.com?! lol
Donate it?
Aside from that, depending on the phone around the house media device. An all-in-one mega-remote could be fun too i guess.
