[Q] Replacing my SLCD with an AMOLED screen - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
My I9023's SLCD screen is busted and I need to replace it.
Can I use an AMOLED one like the one on the I9020?

Screen Replacement
From what I read. Those two type of screens are not interchangeable. Something to do with the digitizer stuff thing. That's why BLN apps are harder to implement on SLCD types than their AMOLED brethrens. Better save up and sell your broken phone for parts and get the AMOLED equipped Nexus S if your still up to it. Or I could be wrong. Just my 2 cents buddy.

I'm in the same situation with my i9023 but i'd like to repair it by myself. I've read some threads that after mounting the new screen everything works but the touch, does this happen with both brethrens (SLCD, AMOLED) or just one in particular?

Cracked screen

Hey.
Today my i9023 fell flat on hard surface and my screen cracked Touchscreen is working, only the glass is broken. In my country, replacement of screen costs about 130$. I found some stuff on eBay, but is it safe to replace by myself ?

Anyone tried doing it ?
Is it the good screen ? I mean there were 2 versions of this phone I think (i'm from Europe)/
I think u have the lcd screen not the superamoled like in america.

somewhere found this: "Google Nexus S Super AMOLED Screen (I9020)"
I have i9023 so I guess it's the other one.
So screen from te link in first post should be good, yeah ?
Yep

Mate, be careful when you order the scree, I have crashed my Nexus S (i9023) too, and it's third SLCD I changed but none of them was working, display was ok, but no touchscreen. And all of the screens are for i9023 model. Plus, a lot of people who own this model also are complaining a lot, that the touchscreen is not working, including this guy here

however, I wish you good luck

I'm never going to a non OLED screen again

I tried to look at my friends evo 3d and HTC rezound and it hurt my eyes. I can't bare to look at a non oled screen again. Do you own a phone with a oled display? And what should I upgrade to? I currently have a nexus s and I'm considering the Droid razr. Is this a good choice ?

i love my lg thrill screen it looks ten times better then my sisters samsung infuse 4g with the amoled display in direct sunlight. purely awesome. amazing color clarity as well. lg really knows how to make screens

now my dad owns a nexus s. but both of my phones with "LCD" (APPLE IPHONE 4S & LG OPTIMUS BLACK is far better than it.
OLED screens does not give the actual color. it gives overly saturated colors and are not very good under direct sunlight.
if u love OLED, u'd be owned by a good IPS like the optimus black (if u are talking android, that is).

Bad choice. RAZR's screen is terrible, pixelated garbage. Get the GNex or GNote.
Avoid LG at all costs. Their update schedule is so messed up.

Droid Razr's screen is pixel-ated garbage; I would go with the galaxy nexus - get my updates and unhindered bloat-less experience. Everything these custom UIs give you, a custom launcher can do and better.
+1
welcome to the club
i only buy devices with SAMOLED+ or SAMOLED HD or at the very least SAMOLED (as found on some Nokia phones)
I mostly stick to Samsung phones as they always carry SAMOLED # screens
HTC Desired had them for a while until they ran out of stock

I absolutely LOVE the display on my Rezound. It's been mentioned earlier but once auto-brightness tweaks are able to be implemented it will be flawless.

Thats exactly what i thought! "Lets turn up saturation... OH LOOK SHINY COLORZ = better display"
But maybe we are just used to under-saturated displays?
I'd rather get a screen that's more power efficient. Especially with white background.

Exactly. Most people are used to washed out colours from LCDs, so they see nothing wrong. But it isn't for nothing that TV manufacturers are always trying to push the vibrant colours of their screens.
For me, ever since getting the uberawesome GNote, I can't stand the faded looking colours of regular LCDs.
Besides I like screens with really nice blacks and colours that look alive.. So SAMOLED HD FTW....
I agree, the rich deep blacks on OLED screens really do spoil you.
Yep, I have a SGS and whenever i look at phones with non OLED displays I pity them. My friend has the SGS i9003 ( the one with S-LCD display) and we compared them side by side, the SAMOLED screen looks WAY better than SLCD. ( more than 6 people were there and we all agreed). Its all about the blacks baby ..
how would the screen of the arc s be rated alongside these phones???
I agree ,the Oled display use less baterry power than other displays, and i love it..
It's just sad whenever I show my screen to some1 who bought a phone and said "It was cheap, it is small, and it's not heavy." And they see my GNex, and they say "Awh, me wun that scweeeeeeeeeeeen." All I can say is.. Pwned by low-end.
I agree OLED is best solution, even if the color is not as real as some others LCD, but I think this will be solved in a near future.
Just think that Samsung, that is the 1st word producer of LCD displays, has just started the spin-off of the LCD department and has declared that the future of his research is on OLED. Say also that Samsung is going to spend a pharaonic amount of money in research for the next year, I'm looking forward to see results.

Change Sensation display (LCD) by One S display (AMOLED)

Hello,
I like Sensation but screen consumption seems high (as in all phones)...
I saw that HTC One S has the same resolution and the same size screen as the Sensation, but AMOLED.
Anyone know which pinouts have each screen module?
Because they are similar phones, maybe have same screens (pinouts).
If not i whould make small changes (if pinout are same but in different order).
I hope display driver (chipset) are included in the LCD module, not in the motherboard ...
I think about buy HTC One S screen on ebay when available (now dont have) and try to change it ...
(im not sure about sub-forum of this post... y think "sensation accesories" fits better than Q&A because Q&A posts are doubts about software, not hardware... if another sub-forum are good please move to them..)
I wouldn't do it. The One S screen would recieve a current it's not supposed to.
because different voltages and currents of the tft screen i need driver/chipset in screen board.
If driver are in screen board, flex cable that connect to motherboard takes digital signal bus and may be the same in both screens.
For example: there are many laptop screens that uses different lcd panels (with different control and backlight voltages), but all of them have same connection: dvi mod (now).
why not just buy the one s if your gonna be dropping cash on a screen for one.
This is a good idea, if this works. I'll be down to actually do the mod as well.
so.. when sold htc one s?... i think now, but y doesnt find anything about this and his replacement parts...
Any moderator would move thread to
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1425 (hardware hacking).
I think is more apropiate... (if think "no" dont move xD)
Just to add the complexities that danirebollo mentioned, another big issue is that the mainboard might be a totally different layout. You might have to do a custom cable. Also, the thickness/thinness of the panel might be an issue.
IMHO, it would be cheaper to sell your Sensation and purchase a One S instead of modifying & purchasing a new panel.
90% of phone screens are not compatible with each other. If you find two that do, it's a coincident rather than the norm. And if I were to go through so much trouble as to source a replacement qHD Super AMOLED screen, which I'm sure won't be cheap to being with, I'd just get a new phone.
if that is possible, count me in, ive bin looking into it ever since i switched over from the samsung vibrant, but never really made any brake throughs

Agreed, I tried to upgrade the SoC by putting my R1 engine in it last night, and would you believe it, it didn't fit. Unbelievable. I wrote HTC a very strong letter of complaint ; )
Sorry, it's that time of the day here in the UK where my silly side rears its head.
Would be a good mod if it worked but I doubt it very much for the reasons mentioned, plus, is the didgitiser bonded to the screen in this new generation of HTC phones?

Well as far as I know, the only way to change the screen on one of these is to change the entire motherboard with it, I found this out at somewhere is the desire thread because many of he desire phones had smiled screens but then Samsung couldn't produce them fast enough and switched it for slcd but people wanted amoled so they swapped it all. Maybe if we asked HTC about being able to swap the screens ( yes it sounds stupid bit what else can we do?). Although the chances are amazingly thin we could request it from them that if you send the phone with them align with the cost of the amoled screen, they should replace it or even ****ing tell us how or if it can be friggin done. Power comes through numbers.....
Yeah, if someone finish this work, I maybe have a try

lol?? why sooo sarcasm??
some phones have same lcd screen (no digitizer), it hasnt rare idea... the only problem was different tecnology (LCD->OLED) but normally the only important was control bus, i2c, (i dont think these screens need this bus), and video data...
i dont know now if it is possible until i have both pinouts.
The other problem I would think is that the touch screen driver wouldn't work with the new screen

I have spoken to my manager regarding this and unfortunately we cannot advise any customer to change there device specification or hardware as this will void the warranty of the handset. I then went on to ask if our repair centre can perform this, unfortunately we cannot request this as this then support customization of the devices which is against the device terms and conditions..
I do apologise about this however we are unable to perform this request.
This is what I got from HTC asking if:
a) if it could be done.
b) if they could do it for us if we payed.
So I'm guessing somebody will have to try it on their own first. GOOD LUCK and God's speed.

Another problem,
I upgraded manually a Nexus S i9023 (slcd, like sensation) with android 4.0.3 leaked pakage in december. This package was made for i9020 (super amoled version): Android run beautifully but when you go into recovery you can't see anything (if you use a very bright light you can barely see the text of the recovery) cause it has drivers for amoled screen.
I suppose that if the screen change is possible you could also have problems to see recovery that is made with normal sensation's screen driver, imho.

If this ever works, it will end like Motorola's Cliq multi touch patch. While it might work, the screen voltage sensors won't be calibrate correctly and will end burning the screen (if you don't believe me Google it). The same could happen to the screen in general, with wrong voltage its going to break.

Not possible. The only screen that it would be able to use is the super lcd that it normally uses. Other screens even if you could find one the same exact size, resolution, and connections probably wouldn't work properly if at all.

awww darn i wish there was some modification cause i would like amoled or lcd2 cause im jelious of the htc one x / v
Just take care of that lcd you have right now. Im having a huge issue with the lcd i have right now, there are 3 versions as far as i can see. The so called hitachi-60H00519, the Sony-60H00623, and the one i have on this phone which i dont have a clue about it and it seems like no one else does either, 60H00532(I dont even know the brand). It looks exactly like the Sony version but sure enough i bought a Sony lcd thinking that it was going to do the job and nothing. Doesnt turn on or anything. So people pay good attention to those numbers when you have to change yours so that you dont run into what i did. Worst thing is that i cant find my version on Ebay or anything.

Replacing LCD with OLED

What do you think about replacing the stock LCD with some nice AMOLED, lets say in case it gets shattered? Plausible?

Unless you are an OLED screen manufacturer, I don't see OLED coming to the zenfone 6 anytime ... soon, or rather NEVER LOL.
But.. if you are a manufacturer then hell yeah, i like to have options. and would buy both type of screens to keep it for the future. :highfive:
