Hi all, I recently rooted my NS4G and flashed my rom to the Brainmaster's MIUI 10.14.11. It worked great for a while and then I started having issues with it so I tried to update it to the 10.28.11 version and it wouldn't let me. I was finally able to reflash to GRJ06D, but no other custom rom would work. I'm using CWM 5.0.2.0. ROM Manager won't work either after it gets into recovery. I get the error message...
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "crespo4g" || getprop("ro.build.product") == "crespo 4g"
E: Error in /sdcard/
(Status 7)
Even trying to do an OTA system update via Sprint freezes and gives me the Android error message (triangle with exclamation). I've tried many many times to reflash and no success.
What do I need to do?
This issue has been reported a few times and there are a few ways to fix it;
1) Make sure you downloaded the right ROM; ie, the ROMs from the Nexus 4G Development section
2) If you're installing ROMs through ROM Manager, don't. Reboot into recovery mode, do a full data, cache and dalvik wipe and then flash the ROM zip while still in the CWM recovery mode
3) Else; try a different version of CWM, make sure it's compatible with your device and then do step 2 again.
Good luck.
Greetz
I think you should flash CWM again then wipe data, cache, dalvik, boot, then flash rom again and report your findings back to us.
I had this issue last week.. You've probably tried to flash the incorrect ROM originally or something..
The only way I could fix it was to boot into download mode, and flash the PDA, phone and modem via Odin. You can get the firmware from samfirmware.com
Thanks for the responses, its funny because I flashed the 4.0.1.0 CWM, which was for the GSM version and then reflashed to 5.0.2.0 (NS4G) in order for the MIUI rom to work. It was after flashing that and running MIUI for a while that I started having issues so I reflashed a new 5.0.2.0 and its still the same.
I haven't been able to flash back to the CWM 3 that it originally came with because I lost my micro USB cable. I hope to get this fixed soon! Thanks again, will keep you guys posted.

I don't read every thread, and I don't know where you got this from. was it stated that this is in the format required for i9003, or did you just pick it up from somewhere else and try to install it?
if it's not for the i9003, then you have to re-flash some stock rom to fix your problem.
if it's for i9003, did you ensure you're using the same fw as was designated for the ics port? for example, is it for kpq and you're using kpq? if not, then you have to restore the backup you made before attempting this. if you forgot to do that, then you have to flash a stock rom to fix your problem. if they were matching and you're having problems, why not ask for help in the thread where you got it from?

Thanks for you review and comment.
First of all, i would like to stated that i have fully meet the requirement of flashing a custom rom. I'm user of KPQ of course i will find a custom rom for my i9003 KPQ. The purpose of this tread is to mention why every time i flashing a new custom would have the same problem occur whereby my device always stuck at the booting logo or reboot over and over again. This has make me troublesome to reflash back to stock rom when every time i failed to do that.
First, i root.
2nd, install rom manager
3rd, Flash CWM recovery
4th, do nandroid backup (use rom manager)
5th, application & data backup (use titanium)
6th, then istall .zip (custom rom)
Is't i missed any step before i flash a new custom rom??
What about deodex ?? it's necessary for us to deodex before we proceed to update our device?
However, i have fully meet all the requirement but why every time i flash different custom rom also failed.
Thanks again for your kindly advice

oops, first, I misread 9lock as clock
then, when flashing a custom ROM, in general, you must be deodexed first. if it's required, I would expect the dev to mention it in their thread. after flashing custom rom, you must also wipe dalvik cache. I don't know if it's necessary, but I do both dalvik and "plain" cache after flashing. have you done these two steps?
then, if you're installing the alpha ics release from the other thread, as stated, it's alpha, so not bug free. in general, custom ROMs will have at least one or two bugs, due to not every potential possible combination of operations can be performed without extensive testing and correction, and especially on our phone, the testing isn't so extensive since there aren't so many users.
edit: I found the thread you're referring to. it's "RC2", which means not necessarily stable (Release Candidate 2). go ask tripin for some help
Thank you for your advice.
Now i can taste my new themes with having a few tiny bugs. I'm so impress you can solve my problem. By the way, i will post up a new thread which guide other people to install custom rom for detail step. TQ

I can't say for sure, but I think your thread would go under "general", with [TUTORIAL] as the tag in the title, to save time. you can alwaysask a mod for confirmation

oops, my bad. as you can see, I was conversing with the OP, and this thread was actually for another specific problem, but since the title is a generality, here goes:
first, follow these steps: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=19663863&postcount=754
then install cwm, put kishen's rom on your sd card, and flash and wipe normal and dalvik cache

HI,
I have recently compiled and flashed the 2.3.4-r1 Ginger Bread on my Nexus S
using these commands
$ ./out/host/linux-x86/bin/fastboot erase userdata
$ ./out/host/linux-x86/bin/fastboot erase cache
$ ./out/host/linux-x86/bin/fastboot flash boot out/target/product/crespo/boot.img
$ ./out/host/linux-x86/bin/fastboot flash system out/target/product/crespo/system.img
$ ./out/host/linux-x86/bin/fastboot flash userdata out/target/product/crespo/userdata.img
But now I want to go back and load the default image-2.3.6 Gingerbread (GRK39F) (which was there at the time of purchasing Nexus S).Is there a way to do this.I downloaded the ROM for it from somewhere on the net and stored it internally on my Nexus S but when I am going into the fastboot mode and then recovery and when trying to install from sd card option by selecting the downloaded ROM I am getting this error(error Attached)

It seems the package you downloaded is for upgrading from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6. Try the full OTA ROM for your phone model from the link in my signature

OK I will try the 2.3.6 .I will use the same procedure as used earlier.
Copying the ROM to internal memory and then select the ZIP file from the sd card.I hope wipe data/cache will be optional.
Thanks suksit !! It worked.I have my previous ROM now.I am happy !
Could you plz tell that why I didnt get more options in the Android Recovery Mode?I saw somethign clockwork Recovery , do I need to install such ROM?
RGds,
Softy
TRy downloading the correct rom from the below link. Make sure you check your phone model (9020/23 3G/4G etc)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1063664
Edit: I see that it is resolved now.. enjoy
You need an older recovery. Had the same issue but when using 3.x instead of 5.0.2.x the status 7 issue went away.

You have to install ClockworkMod recovery in order to get those options. It's not a ROM, it's a recovery image that you flash to replace the stock recovery.
You'll need it if you want to flash custom ROM, custom kernel, or other modifications that comes in an unsigned zip file. Otherwise you can just stick to the stock recovery.
Other benefits of CWM recovery are backup and restore functions, mount options, and the ability to wipe cache, dalvik-cache, battery stats, etc.
To install CWM recovery, you'll have to unlock the bootloader and flash it using fastboot command. I'd recommend you to follow the guides in Nexus S General section if you want to do it.
sometimes if i want to instal new rom to my device this message appear on cwm mode and the installation cannot procces :S ,
i tried to change the kernel from 7 to 8 but it still the error
some custom rom installed normally but i face problem when installing cyangomed , miui and vurrunt as example

it may be that if one rom has the sd card swap and another doesn't, and you have your sd cards set a certain way, the one that matches your setup will work and the other won't. if that's not how it works, then you may have a phone issue.
try to flash the stock firmware first and then flash the rom.

There is no issues on the phone .. i can install roms normally but some roms like miui cyagnomed and vuttru make this problem .. i flash cyagnomed once and it continue installing without errors and then i flash miui rom too but i come back to custom roms and now im trying to install ics alpha2 and the message appear ... also trying to reinstall cyagnomed or miui and the message appear again ,,,,,,,
I tried to reflash stock firmwares and try again .. still the same problem
redownload the file then. I've had it happen where the download is short just a small amount of data, but it's reported as successfully completed, and then it messes up when trying to install.

Could you be so kind to link here these three files. To be honest I'm not so expert fo find them alone.
thanks
I went to stock by doing this. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29073020&postcount=1
I didn't flash the updates in the second part #1 but you could just flash instead. I logged everything in then did this to get the 4.1.1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=29067584&postcount=2817
Go into airplane with a strong wifi signal on for this to work.
I then rerooted (2nd part #2 on)
Hope this helps.
