You can hide your folder, but you can't protect it with password. At leaste for now.
To hide your folder on your SD card you have to use Astro File Manager. Create new folder and rename it ".nomedia" - without quotes. On some phones you have to do restart.
So if you put pictures/videos in that folder, gallery don't show them. No thumbnail pictures either.

Actually, there are two ways (well, there are more, but I think these will do for now).
1. Just place a . in front of the folder name. Eg. /sdcard/download becomes /sdcard/.download
2. You can place an empty file titled .nomedia in the folder you don't want seen by the gallery and video apps, etc.
My android phone warn me the storage is full. after checking by file manager app, I found the size of DCIM folder is 20G!! and there were some pictures located on the other app's folder..
Here is my action: Move all folders of photographic app into DCIM. Backed up all pictures under DCIM.
However I dont want to delete all photos by delete DCIM folder. instead. I would like to keep those photos taken within 6 months, and delete those more than 6 month.
I would like to know if any app can help me to to do this? ex: search files( or only pictures) which date more than 6-month on target folder(s) -> select all -> delete
ps: I know that I could use adb shell busybox find ... -exec rm .. , but if there is an app could do this , that would be easier
Hello. I have thousands of pictures. I would like to know If I am able to create folders inside the DCIM -> 100MEDIA folder of my M8 and label them for certain events ("birthday 2014, xmas, friends party"... etc etc etc). I created a "test" folder and moved pictures to it, and it does not show up in gallery camera shots, or anywhere else in gallery app.
How do you guys organize your pictures?
Also, lets say I move a picture named "IMAG3400" from DCIM to a different folder and or delete it, will any future pictures I take ever be re-named that SAME name? I did a test and it was named differently... So does this mean future picture names will not ever be re-named the same as a previously taken picture?
Hello, I like to take photos and videos using my Note PRO 12.2 However, it has happened a few times that when I showed people photos/videos in Gallary, those that I did not want to show also showed up. What is the best way to hide these videos/photos? I am using an un-rooted device. Thanks.
Rename those files (or folder containing them) to start with "."

Create a new empty file and name it ".nomedia" without the quotes. It will hide any media in the folder that you place it from any gallery/media app.

I guess the above approach is very good if everything is in one folder. If I organize the files into folders like "Summer trip to the US", "winter 2014", "school", "research", etc., it may be a bit inconvenience to move selected files from each folder to one big .nomedia folder or create one such folder inside each bigger folders.
Alternatively, is there a good photos/videos viewer that allows me to drag and drop files or folder to it so that they are perhaps password protected?
Try Quickpic. Under its settings there is a browse menu where you can exclude certain folders.

You're mistaking two things for eachother.
A .nomedia file is a file. You can find one, for example, in the Android folder. It excludes the content of the folder it is located in, as well as any subfolders, from the MediaScanner/Indexing Service process. (Thus the solution for excessive Media battery usage). This excludes the files from the gallery, no matter the gallery setting.
Renaming a folder with .[foldername] does not require it to be called NoMedia, you can call it anything you want. This excludes the folder from apps that have the settings 'exclude folders starting with .' to hide the folder. Meaning you can also show the folders if you want.
Folders with a .nomedia file in it will not show up in the gallery or mediaviewer, but the files can still be opened the normal way from a file explorer.
I've excluded all folders with media in it except for the Alarms, Ringtones and Notifications folders (or the alarm/ringtone won't go off), and opening videos, pdf's and images is done by simply opening the file through a file explorer.
Basically, you can either make a .[foldername] folder and drop them all in there, or make a regular folder, drop all the images in there and copy a .nomedia file into it. The effect will be the same, except that you can choose to show or hide them if you use a .[folder]. .nomedia can not be disabled in the regular gallery. (It can in Quickpic.)
I have a Pictures folder in the root of my SD card. By default several apps created their own folder in Pictures and save their photos in that folder.
If I move the Pictures folder to my SD card what will happen? Will the apps find their folder on the SD card and keep using it? Or will a new Pictures folder be created on internal storage and fragment my app data?
In that latter case, I assume that the app would only see the photos in the newly generated folder and not see any of the photos I moved to the SD card. Is that right?
