I have a fiber optic internet connection at home and on my desktop PC I get download speeds of 80mbps+ however when I do a speed test on my note 10.1 I am lucky to get a downspeed on 3mbps. Does anyone have any ideas why this is and how to improve it?
I am in the UK and have the N8010 model.
Many thanks.
Its likely something with your router. Check the signal strength and channel.maybe a firmware upgrade on the router .are you connection to a/b/g/n all of the above will effect speeds and reliability.
Also is your PC hard wired.? If so you know it will be much faster there is far less overhead data tagging along.I do not think its the device
Good luck

Thanks for the response. My router in running on Wireless N. Yes my PC is hard wired however im still getting at least a 50mbps downspeed on my Windows laptop via the wireless. I just figure it's something to do with the network card inside the Note?
I do have some problems connecting to certain networks with my tablet as well. Maybe there's some problem with wifi drivers in the galaxy note I'm guessing. Hopefully it'll be fixed in JB.

One thing you can try is changing the encryption and/or privacy standard (WEP and so on) since some of them isn't supported by "dumb" devices and I suspect some of them are supported but are so advanced it affects the performance.

Hi,
I had the same issue.
I solved setting the ip address to static (not dhcp) in wifi settings.
Now i get 20 mbits+ (consistent with my G router capabilities)

Go to settings.
Select wifi
Long press on your connection.
Press modify connection
Now select ip settings and change to static
Now change your IP to an address outside of dhcp range and your done.
If dhcp is 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.100 set your tab to 192.168.1.101
You can also change your routers dhcp range to 192.168.1.2 through 192.168.1.15 and set your tab to ..16
Your numbers may be different, but same method.

mine is about 6 down, 4 up. 4 isnt all that bad imo.
Did more reading online and have solved it for now. Seems when my router is in mixed mode it wont connect on N. Put my router in N only and able to get 15 down and 1.8 up.
All my G devises still connect so just gonna leave router like i just set it up(N only)
Thanks.

I use the WEP as it allows me u use my own password witch makes it easier for me to tell my friends my code.
Is there a big speed diff or u just saying it to add more security?
These are my options.

WPA2 Personal allows you to set your own password as well. WEP is VERY insecure. I'm not completely sure, but I think it only takes about a half hour, maybe less, to crack a WEP key by just monitoring the traffic in the air.
Yeah I can crack any wep key within about 2 minutes, whether there is any traffic on the network or not.

It just stops working for no apparent reason and the signal indicator fluctuates wildly. Amazingly the LTE signal is very strong and reliable, guess I'll be relying on that over wifi which just seems wrong.

If I sit in front of my router it works great but if I move a little out of the way it just doesn't work. This sucks, because otherwise I'm loving the phone.

I was curious about this too. Are you on AT&T or Rogers? I know many are reporting issues with Wireless N routers.
Supposedly it will be fixed in a firmware update.

I have a netgear, couple years old. Not sure what type though.
In the WiFi settings, under the menu, "WiFi Network Bands", select "2.4 GHz only". That improved the wifi quality significantly for me.

I can confirm that switching to "2.4 GHZ only" improved the stability for myself as well. This will have to do until HTC releases a fix.

Has anyone tried to assign a specific DHCP lease to their phone with their router to see if this solves the problem? This is killing me, I have to have a phone with flawless wifi, I don't get great cell signal where I work so I need the wifi for texting (I use google voice) / chat / email. I guess I will know more tomorrow when I get home to get mine. I tried to talk my wife to brining it to me at work but no dice there.
I currently have a galaxy nexus which has very finicky wifi as well. I have found that it is more router related than anything else. With the apple airport extreme the connection has always been perfect, but I saw here this is not the case with this phone. Fingers Crossed.
AT&T broke the WIFI on purpose for the following reason
have you use LTE.
Charge your for going over data cap
Profit?

Seems to have done the trick for me!!
From a purely RF point of view, 2.4GHz has better range than 5GHz due to being able to go through walls better. If other devices don't have issues connecting over 5Ghz from the same location, then the issue may be the WiFi antenna design and/or the case material which makes it difficult for higher frequencies to get through. This is most likely the case if by approaching the router you are able to connect over 5 GHz.

This would be fine but I have issues when connected to 2.4ghz when 5ghz is enabled. After I turned off 5ghz its stable so this is not a signal issue, this is some type of driver or kernel issue.

I believe your correct, hopefully HTC will adress it.In the mean time at least it's a bit more stable so far switching to 2.4
Switching your ip to static also works! lets you keep the frequencies on auto. Good for your home wifi. For other locations i guess set it back to 2.4ghz. Hopefully HTC addresses this sometime soon.

did you updated your tab?
Try removing n/w and re enter wep/wpa key...
It should work
As i know their are some problem with routers with 5 ghz channels so try the 2.4 ghz channel and see if the condition resolved also try a different channel to broadcast by you router as channel 8 or 13 etc and see if connection improved or not if you could try it with different router and different connection as in your friend connection to see if connection still drops or not if still drops then return with warrany if no warrany may be you could think about flashing modem files by odin but i think it needs somewhat experienced users and may void warrany

Haven't done or changed anything. I have wifi on my tab turned on at all times. When I leave my house the tab disconnects and when I come home it reconnects until yesterday. When I got home yesterday I noticed it wasn't connecting, my tab recognized my home network with no problems but I had to reenter the password. Very inconvenient if I have to enter the password every time I am home.

Have you tried the obvious, reboot the router, then reconnect?
Also, does it forget the password with any other router?
I have the same problem too. And it doesn't only happen at home but also other networks.
i had noticed since the upgrade (via mobile odin), my tab 7.7 longer see the 5ghz wifi network, however my note 1 and other devices sees the 5ghz network just fine

Hey all,
i am having some issues with my 5Ghz wifi and my skyrocket. First I will list all the information I have.
Skyrocket i727.
Roms I have tried to connect with - Embryo 7 Cymbaline and stock kernel ; Beanstalk 1.30 v.1. with mortez and marla. No luck.
Router - Linksys WRT320N - not a dual band. either 2.4ghz or 5ghz.
Open dd-wrt firmware on the router.
Wireless settings - N only (5Ghz) - 40mhz wide channel - lower - channel 52 + 54.
Security - WPA2 personal with AES encryption.
i have tired many things to get this wifi to connect on my skyrocket. I have tried switching to wirelss A and N. No luck. I have tried using on 20 Mhz wide channel. No luck. I have also tried taking Security off completely with Wireless N 5Ghz and no luck there either. Only way I can get it to connect is using 2.4 ghz. I know the skyrocket supports 5Ghz because there is an option for 5Ghz only within advanced wireless settings.
Any help or advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Have you tried it with stock? Also try scanning the channels with WiFi analyzer. They have an app that might help you connect.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
No I haven't tried it with stock. I do have WiFi analyzer installed and everything seems to work fine on the router end. I'm getting fantastic speeds on my laptop and my friends s4 connect instantly and gets great speeds as well. So I know its not the router settings. I have considered stock Though.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
But when you use Wi-Fi analyzer on the skyrocket, does the phone "see" the router. Have you tried restarting the router with nothing connected to it, and connecting the skyrocket first?
Edit: Try using different channels as well. Not sure exactly what channels the skyrocket can see in 5 GHz mode.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Yeah it sees the channel on WiFi analyzer. I've tried channels 40,42 ,149 and many others. It seems to have a problem authenticating the WPA2 key. But, going by that logic, leaving the network open would solve the problem. But it doesn't. Still can't connect on 5ghz when there is no security. So, I'm thinking Its a custom kernel problem or the hardware is failing. Not sure which.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Yeah I would say try another router someone else you know has that has 5ghz and using stock router firmware. Are you on the latest dd wrt?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
Yeah the latest as of like march 2013 I believe.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda app-developers app
I am using a linksys e4200 dd-wrt build 22000
Here are some of the settings I use:
Basic settings:
wireless channel : 153 - 5.7654 GHz
Channel Width: 20MHz
Wireless Security:
Security Mode: WPA2 Personal
WPA Algorithms: AES
Advanced Wireless Settings: shown if different than default
CTS Protection Mode: Disable
Preamble: short
TX Power: 66 (lower than default)
Afterburner: enabled
You might try playing with the TX power setting since the default (for my router) is the same as the 2.4 GHz default and is to high for the 5 GHz band.
Well. I tried those settings but still a no go. I think its a problem with the 5ghz on my phone. Maybe I need to go back to stock JB. Not likely though. I resolved the issue by using two routers anyway. One for 2.4 and one for 5. Works perfect so far. Thanks for everyone's help and Input.
