[Q] External battery case usage - General Questions and Answers

Hi, quick question about usage of battery cases. Is it better to let the battery case keep the phone charged (at 100%) as if using the phone while plugged into. Or to let the phone battery drain then use the battery to charge it?
Thanks

Depends. The more you use your phone's battery (charge cycles), the more it ages. At the same time, keeping a Li-based battery at 100% charge is also not healthy, and can reduce life expectancy of the battery.
Personally, I would only use the external if I needed it.

{HELP}New Battery Question.

i've just bought a 2000Mah battery for my Diamond.
all i need to do is fully charge/discharge battery up to 4 cycles before achieving full capacity of a new battery right?
what i want to ask is. can i turn on my phone while charging my battery?
of course i can!
but, i want my battery is in maximum capacity and longer life time.
how to do that? should i turn off the phone while i'm charging it for the first time?
thanks for answering.
cheers!, nightly_shadow
In theory, it would be best if you left the phone to fully charge without touching it, then let it fully discharge by heavy usage.
oh.. ok. i got it. thanks for your opinion.

[Q] Am I Damaging My Battery?

I go out at night mostly so by the time i leave the house my phones battery is about 75% full. I have the LG G2x. My question is sometimes before i leave i'll see that it's 75% full so i'll charge it back to 100% before i leave. Does charging the phone without it being drained damage the battery? should i just leave it alone next time i go out? sorry if this is already a thread just point me in the right direction.
Thanks.
You're not damaging your battery But if you never drain the battery completely, i'm not sure how good the battery will be after 6 month, so i recommend you drain it completely every couple of weeks.

There are several opinions about keeping battery health for more time. Recharging at 75% is not one of them, but it's not the worth of it.
Here's what i know and what i've heard:
* some manufacturers (laptops) have software that don't allow the battery to charge when it's over 80 to 90% - they say it helps on battery life
* it's common sense that you should recharge when you have 20 - 40% and do a full cycle once in a while (this is what i do)
In my opinion, charging only 25% of the charge in a regular basis will not really help to keep battery life...
I've personally had the best performance from batteries when I let them discharge as much as possible and then charge them to full without interruption.
some have also said that draining the battery too often can also damage it, is this correct?
They like to be ran down then recharged but not all the way down to nothing unless you are having a problem with bat life on a rom

Yes. You should not drain your battery all the time. Use normally, charge it when below 40% and yes, charge it back to full - that's the ideal thing.

+1 that is the best way. Li-on batteries should'n be drained completly because it can shorten their life.
I read somewhere that it is not important when you start charging your battery (20%, 60%...) but it's important that it finishes to charge up to 100% every time
I heard/read that LI-ION batter is good to charge when cap goes bellow 30%.

Is it okay to always charge Android phone & tablet?

Hi guys!
I have a question. I am always on the go and am trying hard to ensure that I have enough battery to last the whole day or at least in places I don't have chargers.
So, is it okay to always charge Android phones & tablets whenever I go or is there a 'guideline' on charging only when hit 20, 30, 50% (for example) to preserve battery life?
i use my tablet alot and i charge it when it gets to 1% i can use it for almost 2 days b4 i charge it i feel like it saves your battery not to charge it so much i could be wrong
perhaps it is okay
It doesn't matter, battery wont overcharge and the battery in all new devices don't have memory issues anymore.
One tip I would suggest is not to completely drain your battery everytime before charging.

The latest smartphones batteries don't suffer of memory issues any longer,so you're free to charge them whenever you need or you can,the only advice IMHO is:if you flash kernel, rom, or anything else on your phone be sure to calibrate your battery after, you can do it in RECOVERY or downloading application from the market ie: battery calibrator/calibration (I don't remember)
bye
You may reduce the battery's long-term lifespan. Batteries last longer if you can keep them between 20-80% charge. Also, they don't like being hot.

i was wondering the same thing because I have that same issue of being weird about a full charge on my phones. have seen mixed comments on the matter.

[Q] How to charge correctly to save battery cycles?

I use the tablet a few hours a day (say, 6 hours) and among those most of the time (say 4 hours) it is on my desk so I can plugin the charger if I want.
My question is in this case what's the recommended behavior, for the purpose of saving battery cycles (I mean, say, after a year, the battery life per charge is reduced less compared with when it was new)? Would it be better to use the whole day without charging it, and charge at night? Or Charge it whenever I can?
Thanks for your advice!
Keep it plugged in. The battery will not overcharge and it wont effect the battert cycles as much as draining it and then charging it. Its better to do shallow charges (above 50%) than deep charges.

Charging Battery

What's the consensus on when to charge and how long?
Is it safe to charge the S7 battery overnight, even if only around 50%? Or is it better to wait until your almost dead?
One of the I.T. guys at work was saying you should wait until you're below 20%, then always charge to 100%.
Just charge it whenever you want, this isn't the 90's or 2010. You'll probably replace your phone before you start to see it majorly affecting your battery.
You'll get a very slight improvement in overall battery life if you keep the charge between 25% and 75%. But we're talking very small. But yes, it's perfectly safe to charge your phone over night. The battery / phone / charger electronics won't overcharge the battery.
What you do want to avoid is draining the battery down to zero, or close to it. If at all possible, don't let the charge drop below 20 - 25% on a regular basis.

Thanks for the info. I thought it was beneficial to charge all the way to full?

Lithium Ion batteries are different than older technologies, such as NiCad and NiMH. These batteries suffered from the "memory effect" (although not as badly as most people thought), so it was good to charge those fully. If you always charged them to, say 80%, they would eventually only take an 80% charge. Li batteries don't suffer from a memory effect, so you don't need to worry about that.
The other thing is that Li batteries hate three things: excessive heat, being fully drained, and being overcharged. Tesla stops charging when the battery pack reaches 75% of full charge, and displays that as a full charge. Similarly, they consider a 25% charge as "empty." Then again, a Tesla battery pack costs something like 10,000 bucks, so it's important to as much as possible to maximize the life of the pack.
