Few months back i flashed CM9 ROM by Elypson3 on my Moto Defy.Presently there is a new version of that ROM which i downloaded and flashed.I have Nandroid Backup of the previous ROM.After flashing the updated version of that ROM i am getting ROOT problems using Superuser.When i use the ALLOW all app the root permissions in Superuser,the apps does not allow the root(Tested onany apps including Titanium Backup Pro),but when i use the PROMT option in Superuser settings,the root works on all apps when i tap ALLOW button on promt.
Is there any problem in ROM or i have to ROOT my phone again?Also if anyone can post some simple steps to flash ROM freshly(like a very new ROM and not including a single bit of data from previous versions,like wiping data etc.) would be really helpful.
Go into superuser app & check for update. You can try to unroot, reboot, & reroot. Play around how you like, since you (smartly) made a backup.

Thanks for the reply.Ya I had a backup and unfortunatly had to go back to that as the update had some changes which i didnt like .I have a question, how to flash the stock nandroid backup?I have the ROM and its Fixed SFB.So what to flash first ROM or SFB?And after flashing stock ROM and SFB will i be able to get back to CM9 using nandroid backup?
I have problems with SMS. I don't receive certain texts. just randomly.Anyone else with this problem?

I don't know what SFB is, but I'm guessing you need it for the ROM to work on your phone? In that case, ROM first.
Nandroid backs up your whole phone's internal memory, so restoring will take you back to whatever state your phone was in when you made the backup. The contents of your SD card are not included in the backup.

Restored Nandroid ROM first and its rebooting again and again after Motorola logo.And cant go to cwm recovery too.What to do now?

I hit the back up rom button in rom manager and it went to the htc screen. Its the screen that you see when you first turn on the phone. Its still on that screen for 10 mins now should I pull the battery or wait another 10 min? I have a thunderbolt btw. any advice greatly appreciated. thx
Did you flash ClockwordMod Recovery through ROM Manager before trying to make a backup? Pull the battery and reboot. If you didn't flash CWM then you need to do that. It's the first option at the top of the menu in ROM Manager.
I just had this happen couple days ago. Seems like Recovery went wonky. Pull battery & when you boot get back into Rom Manager > Menu > Clear Download Cache > Then go into Menu > Setting > Check Erase Recovery ... Hit Flash ClockworkMod Recovery and it will download and reinstall recovery.
I think a battery pull is in order. Did you go to backup and restore > backup? I have never had an issue when it comes to backing up my current rom/setup in cwm so I dont know what the issue could be.

I just did that. Should I hit backup current Rom again? Maybe I should leave it alone. I don't want to damage the phone. I did back up my rom when i first rooted the phone with rom manager but i couldn't find it in the sd card and I couldn't see it under manage and restore backups. this is so discouraging. Oh one thing I should mention. I didn't update to the lastest version of rom manager. Could that be the problem?

I would definitely update to the latest version of ROM Manager and flash the latest recovery (should be 3.0.2.5 if it's not already.) There were issues with the previous version of CWR.
Absolutely update to latest version of Rom Manager then certainly try to run a backup.

Making a backup isn't going to damage the phone. You should always make a backup before flashing anything (ROMs, themes, kernels, radios). That way you have something stable to revert to incase what you flash ****s up your phone.
Your backups will be on the SD card under clockworkmod/backup.
Update ROM Manager, flash CWM and try making a backup.

if you click manage and restore backups and select "restore" it should be there. If not, you can back up your current rom through Recovery, think it says "backup current" or similar.
Another option to try is a full uninstall. Then redownload Rom Manager.
Ok I updated to the latest version and backing up my rom right now. Its seems to be working. Thanks everyone for your help. I'm a noob at this. What is the difference if I back up with the app titanium backup vs rom manager? It seems everybody that rooted their phone have these apps. I always thought they both have similar functions.
I had the same problem. I just turned off fastboot and everything worked fine.

Use Clockwork... ROM Mangler always causes issue. What's true in life?? Cut out the middle man and go straight to the source. Uninstall Rom Mangler/Download Quickboot/Get your ROMS from here and leave the heavy work to Clockwork. My opinion.

Not sure what to say about it not being under "Manage and Restore Backups," but it should be on your SD card under /sdcard/clockworkmod/backup.

Titanium Backup can back up all of your apps, data, and settings, but not your ROM (operating system), so TB can restore all of that stuff regardless of the ROM you're using (for the most part).
ROM Manager/ClockworkMod backups (aka Nandroid backups) take a full image of your phone (apps, data, settings, ROM, messages, etc) in one simple operation, so that when you restore that backup, your phone will be ABSOLUTELY IDENTICAL to the way it was when you took the backup.
Personally, I do a nandroid backup right before flashing a new ROM, and again after I get all of my settings the way I like them. That way, I have a restore point in case I completely eff up my phone. I do a Titanium Backup of my apps and settings right before switching to a different ROM (anytime that I have to clear the phone's cache for a ROM install), so that once the new ROM is installed, I can get my phone back up and running the way I like it faster. So, yes, they do a lot of the same things, but have very different uses. Hopefully that made sense! It did in my head, but that doesn't always translate well, lol!

This makes alot of sense. Oh the reason the backup file is not on the sdcard was the first backup was never backup. I just assumed it backup when I hit "backup current rom" Thank god I didn't flash my rom. If something went wrong I have nothing to go back to. Thanks for the info it was very helpful.

I have rooted/ROMed many devices in the past and have heard guides talking about doing a Nandroid backup. My question is how exactly does it work? Say for example: I am on the stock ROM (rooted of course) and I do a Nandroid backup while on stock. If go to say Cyanogen and I don't like it can I just restore from my nandroid backup like I would flash any other ROM to go back to stock. And if that will get me back to stock does it also preserve all of the user data that was in that ROM when it was backed up?
Any other information about about nandroid backups would be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
From my understanding, the backup backs up all the stuff on your phone EXCEPT for what's on the SD card.
The idea is that you do a back up. Then install a new rom that you want to try out. BUt you don't like it, so you just restore the backup and woolah! your old phone is back along with all your settings, data, etc.
I'm not sure why it's called a nandroid backup, but from what I gather, you can do it with clockworkmod, just boot into recovery. And use the backup and restore option.
That was my understanding as well. I just wasn't sure on the situation with the user data (or the backup in general really). So all it takes is a nandrid backup to revert back to (rooted) stock?
A Android backup takes all the files on your device and saves them as a data.img,system.I mg,cache.I mg,user data,and recovery.img. It is also restorable through fastboot. It can also get you out of a tough spot. Say you are messing with a new theme and it causes your device not to boot up or causes unwanted problems. You can restore a backup to a time when your device was working correctly.

this is true unless you do a nandroid+android_secure backup. this also backs up your external app data

Yes you're correct. You can restore but just remember some app might have ext data in sdcard. If you don't delete it, when you restore you'll get the same as before

So if you want to restore say just your data can you just delete the images you do not wish to restore from the backup folder and it will just keep the ones you have? Or won't it work at all if you start deleting images?

i wouldnt tamper with a nandroid backup, but if you have clockwordmod recovery, that is possible. clockwordmod recovery gives you the option to restore one of those images (but only one at a time).

It does! It's a compelete "snapshot" of your phone with all apps/settings etc.
Does it also backup the stuff which has been stored on the external ext2-Partition, which is mounted to enlarge the space for apps?
Same with restore of this nandroid-backup. Will it also place the backup again to the same space?
As I know there's a (symbolic) link put into /data which might get problems.

If you install another ROM with different kernel and then you want to go back to nandroid backup, does it work ?

I was wondering if the framework is saved as well. I recently updated to the ICS firmware and am wondering if I restore with a backup from the old GB firmware will that be restored as well or will it still stay on the ICS? From my understanding ICS firmware will run previous versions

Yes,It restores all data and apps nandroid backup is a mirror copy of your phone.after restoring you will get your previous stock ROM.

im not sure, i think nandroid backup will unbrick your phone as long as you can boot to recovery. atleast when i installed a roms pach it didnt fully boot, got stuck at bootanimation, no loop, just froze, then i got it back with nandroid backup

i have a nandroid stock rom backup i did it when my phone is not yet rooted.
now i successfuly flashed hybridrom v2.1 in my phone.
my question is
1. is it ok to restore the nonrooted stockrom back up in my phone?
2. should i delete phone data ang cache before restoring the backup?
3. what cw recoverry mod i'll use in my SGY? ive found out thre are lots of ver its confusng .

1. IMHO, you should extract necessary settings or data and restore to your new rom. You can use AppExtractor
2. No need to delete everything before restoring
3. Your choice. There is touch version out there. Try and love it

i was saying that if i wana go back to my stock rom (original rom) wich is not rooted can i restore it using CW?
if i flash back to my stock nandroid backup using CW my phone will not be rooted and it will restore the default samsung rom?
its just my theory though i haven't tried it yet i`m asking question like this for my future reference

Yes your device wont be rooted and will return to the stock rom.
Since the nandroid backup copies the whole partition. just like Norton Ghost does on the pc, so your phone will just go back to its exact status it was at that time.
You wont need to wipe user data/factory reset, because of the data partition being restored by CW.
Well you are asking for a recovery. How did you make a nan backup if you have no recovery?
Or you used the stock one? if you used the stock one, aren't you able to use it to restore?
Or do you want a new more powerful recovery?
As in the previous post they mentioned, use the one you like, with the most options

Tried wipes and fixes from recovery but it didn't work. I would do factory reset but i don't want to lose my apps. They are on my sd card mounted as internal with flashed script. I don't know will I lose them? Help me please.

I don't think that there is any other method so just do a full wipe

Make a backup of your current corrupt rom.
Flash same rom again without wiping anything.. see if that works.
If not..you have nandroid backup img.. take out whatever important data you need.
I made backup, flashed rom and phone runs but there is another problem. When I restore apps from my backup they don't work. When viewed from system settings they look like: com.sketchbook 0,00 B and gray icon with sd card. The same happened to superuser app so I don't even have su rights. Do you have any solution for this or I just have to start with new rom?

If your root access is broken you have root it again. There are numerous softwares.. use your pc to retrieve your data from nandroid img. Using titanium to backup app from nandroid backup doesnt work.
I just reinstalled superuser app and it's working. Anyway I think I will just flash a new rom.

Finally was able to succesfully root my phone last night, and now I am wondering how to actually flash a custom ROM. I figured I'd start with Cyanogen since its the most popular and seems like a good starting point. So, I have a few questions.
1. How do I install the custom ROM? (Cyanogen in this case) Also, is this process the same regardless of what android version I have? (I'm currently on the stock 4.1.1 OTA)
2. Should I install a custom kernel? If so, is it the same process? Also, is my data wiped just the same as with flashing a custom ROM?
3. If I make a backup with Titanium Backup, will I simply be able to access/redownload my app data it if I redownload Titanium after I flash the ROM?
Any and all help is appreciated!

I'm sure everyone has their own advice, but I would say first thing you'll need is ROM Manager
Download the ROM you want and place it on your sdcard. Use Titanium Backup to backup your applications, and then restart your phone in Recovery Mode. When in recovery mode, make a backup by going to "Backup and Restore" > backup. Then do a factory reset and wipe your cache. Install the new rom and enjoy the addiction
Also...be careful making sure that any kernel flashed is compatible with the ROM you are flashing. If not you can brick your phone.
