[Q] Need Help. S3 Vs One X. Help me choose the best - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Hi all,
I heard a lot about the xda community, and its truly a wonderful place. I own a samsung galaxy s phone and I am looking to purchase a new phone, currently I am confused in between the HTC one x and Samsung galaxy s3. Can you guys please help me in choosing the one correct for me. If any of you can take some time out and pin down some content which can help me choose, it would greatly help me.
I am looking for a phone which looks great and does'nt get outdated quickly in the future, I am really annoyed by the fact that samsung didnot rollout ICS for galaxy S. So i need a beast which looks really nice. I have narrowed my options to S3 and One X.
Any help would be grateful.and sorry If i am not supposed to post such threads( I am new here).
Thanks,
Sid

To many options out there right now my friend..down to you which one you really want to go for...New Nexus phone is coming out..Even though it is LG still sounds quite interesting cause it is a Nexus so it has Google behind it...Then you have the One X+....even if you went for the original One X you can be assured you have great support for it already development wise and it is still one sexy phone

I'll reply to this later in more detail, as I currently have both phones in my possession after a lucky win at work courtesy of HTC.
The phone I got on contract was the S3, back when the blue ones finally started showing up after they were delayed.
I'm currently in the same position as you, as I know have to make a choice between the two phones I agonized over for months before their release. I genuinely thought I'd made the right decision with the S3, but once I got hold of this One X and actually used the phone, I'm struggling to decide!
After reading plenty on XDA, and assuming the battery life was awful on the One X, I've been really pleasantly surprised by this handset. It's odd how the One X actually feels 'better' in the hand, and how real world use of the phone usually gets me around 2 days of charge, which is no different to the S3 for me!

Wow, Thanks guys for quick responses. I am totally stuck between both the phones. I have another question, did you experience any kind of slight lag in any of these phones? Cuz my Galaxy S lags a lot, specially when I tend to start an app, it takes some time to launch it. I heard there is no lag whatsoever and the UI is pretty smooth, but since you people have used them for quite some time now, have you ever experienced any lag?
Thanks guys this is really helpful.

Honestly there isn't a lot between them, only really personal preferences. Ask here, you'll be told the One X is the best. Ask in the SGS3 forum and you'll be told that's the best.

Thanks for the reply . One X is truly a very good looking phone. I have never held one in my hands so i have no idea how it feels. Please do give me your valuable review, since you own both you will have a fairly good idea. Waiting for your response

One X.
Currently I have S3 and One X and One X is more superior to S3.

I have also had GS1, 2, 3 and tbh when I had the GS2 i preffered the sensation XE in terms of looks etc but people were saying the camera/battery life wasnt great and the s2 was better in both those respects and it is the same thing again this time with the HOX I always preffered the HOX from the start but the camera quality and battery life was a issue once again and the video recording frame rate was low at 24fps.
However this time, the HOX under firmware update and the upcoming jelly bean update look very promising not to mention the tegra 3 games and the playstation store, plus the fact you can take pics/videos, watch your videos in the stock music player, use the internet with 3g connection and olisten to music whilst in a phone call.
When watching videos or movies you can take pics, the fact that you are not restrcited to sending 3 messages before the phone turns the whole message into a multimedia one and when sending texts to multiple people you are restricted to 10 contacts at a time which is just jarring.
Also the S3s low light camera/video performance is less than stellar. Alot of the motion features on the s3 turned out to be gimmicky tbh, like smart stay doesnt work all the time sometimes I am looking at the screen and it still goes off, swipe to do screen shots is freaking jarring as because you have to touch the screen of the phone sometimes it moves what ever your trying to capture and it sometimes takes 5 attempts. I prefer the screen on the HOX aswell.
Battery life isnt actually great unless you have power saver on, take it off and quite literally watch your battery drain tbh, my 4 other friends with S3s have said the same.
TBH I must admit i did fall for the hype of the s3 and wish I just got the HOX in the first place and suffered the niggles because the s3 imo is a really boring phone. the only things I honestly prefer on the s3 is the loud call volume, well thats because outside I always have to have it on if im not using headsets because the normal level is not great, also calls are not as good with my ur beats headsets as they are in a HTC device.
I like the in call equalizer on the s3 and the Blue notification light. I am not fussed about replaceable battery or memory card slot. I dont see that stopping the icrap sorry iphones from selling in their millions.
Also tbh the s3 hoggs RAM, the other day I just had a phone call and internet on (via wi fi) and it was using 692mb out of 779mb. My GFs HOS had the sims running, internet, gallery and like 5 other things and was only using 463mb out of 685mb. The person i was on the phone to also has a S3 and only had phone call running and his phone was using 623mb of 779mb just for phone call. My S2 never did that it was always generally around 460mb with a few apps running out of 833mb.
my only problem right now is I really like the white HOX and its £380 at expansys and amazon and its still over a week to wait for the HOX+ which entices me with the 64gb memory and bigger battery but I just want to get rid of this phone now. I am trying to hang on but its just so boring i wanna get rid of it. Two of my friends were in the same predicament one of them just said F it he dont need 64gb memory and he cant wait so he went and got a grey HOX and said the battery iho isnt as bad as what he was hearing, neither is the camera plus JB is coming soon aswell.

Its interesting reading the repsonses to this thread. At the moment I have a HOX but im contemplating getting a s3..

Try them both and make your own mind up. :good:
We can all say X is better than Y, or Z has this over W. But only you can decide, may the force be with you.

Both have awesome specs and features I chose the x bec of the screen+quality of the body. I'll end up getting the s3 or note 2 to complement my note 10.1.

Wait for the next Nexus

Defo wait for one X+

I'm the proud owner of HOX and i think HOX is much better than SGS 3 except one thing .SGS 3 has more roms to flash and if You are a flashoholic then go with S3 other than that get your self a HOX and just grab it and hold it !!! Can You feel it?? It feels like a woman but it's better
huhuhaha I'm serious

Sg3 roms are too bored, a friend of mine sold his sg3 because of that, now he is happy with his new hox and he is using jelly bean roms. Now he wants to learn the theming stuff.
Of course hox is better than sg3. NO doubt about that.
But if u can wait for hox+, it will be a wise decision

Hello ;
I've been hovering around this device for a long while, been checking reviews and reading every thread on these forums...
The more i read, the more i'm confused, new bugs popping up and complaints like the suckish Multitasking are really makin' it a hard choice on me.
Not to mention the fact that i wanna use the device on Orange network in my country and there is so SIM-Unlock so far...i've seen the SIII and i'm leaning towards the HOX, but i'm too paranoid now thanks to all the issues and bugs !
Thoughts, Anyone ?

Hardware and screen are the best I've seen bar none. But the software bugs are too numerous and too significant for me to recommend it. Wifi, push email, multitasking, are all very important features that are severely flawed for many users of the one x. If HTC would fix these issues I'd recommend it in a heartbeat. If they don't fix then soon I'll be returning mine.
Sent from my HTC One X using XDA
That's exactly my point, my bro is waiting on my "Go"...and i'm unable to decide if to take this "risk" and get the device and work out the bugs and fixes later
for what it's worth, I really don't have any of the issues of the above poster. I am seeing the multitasking "bug", but other than that, this handset is flawless. I'd say get it! (but this is really up to you...)
I think its luck of the draw or batch problems because I have had zero issues with push email or wifi. Both of these things work flawless on my device. The multitasking of course is the same on mine as everyone else's because HTC did that as a part of Sense i'm guessing to manage memory. I have the AT&T version just to clarify.
Every new device launching sure will have bugs or problems. I'm sure HTC will fix it.

and about framerate issues at 1080p im still undecided whether to buy or not the HOX but this bug is on the works or the Tegra3 chip will restrain the video abilities of this phone ?
I´ve been following threads here on the forum since launch and since the kernel sources are out any developpment on this ?
well it depends who are you...
if you are a hardcore android user, probably hold a little bit
if you are just a normal user, definitely One X is your best choice! even better than SGS3
OP, why would you want the AT&T One X and not the SIM unlocked international One X?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using Tapatalk 2
Despite all the flaws this phone has... it's a great phone. it'll last you a year or 2 without a problem. Its got a beautiful screen... and if the bootloader gets unlocked, this would definitely be one of the best phones to own. and even w/o the bootloader, its plenty fast. but if you can't handle minor annoyances like multitask, lack of expandable memory... forget about it.
i can live with the agressive multitaasking and with the 32 gb but watching a video recorded by the one x hurts the eye .... and my question is a software update would increase the bitrate of the video or the tegra 3 chip is limited and theres no salvation ?
There is an OTA update being released on May 28 which should fix many issues...the XL, international version has the quad core, but that does not mean its superior...more is not always better...I prefer dual core anyway...however I bet HTC has quad core in next phone...read something about the Tegra 3 not being compatible w the lte radio...not sure though..

Please dont buy it. If you happen to have a faulty handset god knows this forum will have another thread like " Disppointed w the HOX", or " who else is returning their HOX", or " this/that function is a joke on the HOX", or " HTC really messed up this/that". If you think you cant deal w the POSSIBLE bugs then just dont get yourself into the situation.
I agree...way too many 'whiners' posting threads...I'm not 100% happy w mine but I knew there would be minor issues in buy a brand new release phone..people compare the one x to the SII and SIII...Samsung is OK but the SII feels cheaply made...the AMOLED is not good at all...s3 will probably be similar...the ones crying about HTC should just stop whining on here and buy an S2 or something else..

i was going through the same thoughts, debating over HOX or gs3, finally decided to go with the HOX, its the first HTC phone ive owned and i had the captivate before this one. Such a huge improvement. The only thing that bothers me not having the bootloaders unlocked which i have high hopes from the devs to getting around this. All in all even in its stock condition it works flawlessly for me and performs above my expectations.
From Samsung SG2 to Galaxy Nexus to this, and I have to say it's been a long time since I have been so impressed with a phone. Build quality, radio performance and software tweaks are amazing. The last phone that I had that came close to this was the HTC H D2.
I'm returning my One X and getting the Galaxy Nexus.
I can't support a device or company that has a locked bootloader. Also the dev community and ROM choice for the Gnex is easily the best right now.
Watch. You jump ship on the HOX next day the devs get unlocked bootloader. Happened to me before. Twice. My two cents.

Farewell One S Users !

Hey guys, Just letting you all know I will be ditching the One S tomorrow... I've got the Galaxy Note.
I know your thinking ''WTF?!?!?!'' But i had so many issues with the One S (signal related) it was driving me mad, I was offered the S3 (at a hefty price) or the Note, for free, So I took it.
When I first saw the Note I thought ''OMG Thats Hideous, Its waaaay too big'' But the more I saw it, the more I liked it !
My other contract is up soon so I will get the SGS3 then.
So thanks to every one who helped me since day one, I will be moving on to the Note forums as of tomorrow
I will still keep my Help Thread updated as much as possible, And will continue to help as and when I can.
Take care & good bye

I'm also considering to leave if I can except I just can't agree to pay the same price for a Galaxy Nexus that have much lower specs everywhere except with the screen and software side... (It's my only choice on my carrier (screw the Razr will ya?))
You are really lucky to have other choices like a Note.
I can't believe that HTC didn't offer a fix for the low signal... Oh, and there still no way to use Skype which I will really need starting next week...

hey azzledazzle,
i really appreciated the way you where getting on top of the issue with the virtual button mess, really liked your input. i counted you in for one who's pushing the issue further with HTC.
So, i find it a bit hard that you "gave up" on it but totally understandable on the other side. My One S is literally doing my head in (wife threw it at me in anger) with that perfectly unusable state its in. It sits there, playing with its screen and buttons just like its gotten its own mind but i cant make it do anything else most of the time.
So if it was like that for you, i can only repeat myself: i do understand. Still i find it a bit sad.
my opinion on the note: am working on it for my brother and i find it disappointing. Samsungs surface is stupid, KIES is like having one leg amputated, cant really go anywhere with that code, the phone hides anyones head while at it (just for the lolz of it), its too big. seriously.
And as a tablet, its too small. But as i said, my opinion
Good luck on your new adventures mister Azzle!
Hey mate,
Have fun with the Note, its been my primary device for 7 months now. Its a great phone. After a while its size becomes normal.
As for the comments above, i find it a perfect size, its like having a tab on you at all times. My only gripe is touchwiz, i do prefer sense.
Peace!

I can't say as I blame you. I getting pretty sick of my One S. Brilliant phone except it has next door to useless signal reception. It spends 3 to 4 hours a day without signal - which irritates when I know signal is good. What to replace with I dunno but this issue is likely to sicken me off HTC. Won't be the Note though as far too big for me
Galaxy nexus
Same here. After two months I am getting rid of it for Galaxy nexus $349 from the play store. We have minimal support for this device. Thanks to cm9 devs anyways.
It make no good to have powerfull phone that cannot multitask or have no completed custom ROM. And now Jelly Bean. By the time ONE S gets JB Google will announce next nexus probably this fall with KEY LIME 5.0
Better have slightly outdated hardware that prrobably will not be much noticable and have up to date software, vanilla or custom ROM with no issues.
And HTC and their delayed kernel source release. SIII released it before device was on the market. That how you get developers love.
I really wanted to love this phone, but yesterday I had a chance to exchange it for a new one in the box to see if it fixed my signal/wifi issues or get the Galaxy S3. Every smartphone I have owned has been HTC so I was nervous, but I opted for the S3 and all I can say is wow. It's an awesome phone and completely blows the One S out of the water for my needs.
I knew going into the the One S I would be making concessions on things I wanted such as an SD card slot and removable battery. Its a super sexy phone, but if you can't use it as a phone it does me no good, too many dropped/missed calls and poor wifi. I hope they do fix the signal issues for those who keep it and I'm glad some people were experiencing no problems.
HTC really needs to up their game on the next round of phones, I gave them extensive feedback online and they even called to follow up, which was nice. I told them I have owned a G1, MT3GS, G2, MT4GS and One S and enjoyed them all with the exception of the OS. I did have a seperate issue with them concerning the MT4GS and replacement parts that irritated me as well.
Best of luck to you all and thank you for all the help and resources from this forum!

Ok, so i have had the AT&T Galaxy S3 for a couple weeks now and its not wowing me like i was expecting and been eyeballing the AT&T HTC One X and not sure on getting that next and selling the S3. In a nutshell. The sgs 3 is the same processor as the one x. Performance will be about the same with multi tasking being better on the sgs 3. You give up an sd card slot and a removable battery in favor of a better screen and more of a solid feel.

I hope you're right man. I think it's the superior phone. If we could only get something like CM9 working completely that would fix the multitasking, then i'd have no complaints.
I had the one x , sold it and bought an s3 (att/rogers dual core version)
Honestly and truly the one x is a better device in some ways. The battery life is much better on the one x due to the lcd screen using less power despite the two having the same processor. The screen is better too, the one x screen is a lot better and clearer even at lower brightness. Not to mention it just overall looks better (brighter and truer whites, colours also actually look natural unlike amoled). And you cant even deny the fact that the one x has a much much better build quality its a better and more solid feeling device.
Though the siii has an edge over the one x in some areas like sense vs touchwiz, i find that touchwiz almost never lags vs the one x still had hiccups in some areas slight homescreen lag etc etc which is almost non existant on the siii. Plus for me the major issue that drove me away from my one x is the multi tasking issue, basically the one x has the most aggressive app switcher that kills an app almost instantly after you exit it, the phone is near useless at multi tasking. iE if i was listening to music and went to change the song while browsing, when i came back to the browser the phone would have to "reload" the app.
With that said, the two phones are practically neck to neck, just depends what you prefer as strongpoints and what you can live with as weak points. I would sell my siii in a heartbeat if the stupid multi tasking issue was fixed on the one x.
just my " two cents."

Curious, what was your net loss selling the One X and buying a new S3?

Hmm i got lucky and got a good price for my one x, bought it for 500, sold it for 480 and bought the galaxy s iii for 500.
I prefer the screen and build quality of the One X but love that Samsung released source code so soon (most likely just to steal sells and pull users like myself)
Everything else has been said. They both have advantages and disadvantages. It's pick your poison.
Me, I chose to go where the source was. No sense waiting 90 to 142 (if there's an update) days and using workarounds to unlock the bootloader if someone else openly offers both.
I know, I'm a broken record since I got this phone. I'll try to post a little less lol. Just frustrated with HTC

The main reason i dont like my GS3 is because the build quality of it feels a bit cheap, like the back battery cover already has a crack in the top right corner. I also get a few kinks like my SD card randomly unmounts, i get lags here and there, a few FC's, and launcher restarts. Other than that the phone is solid...Just a couple things i would expect it to tackle but samsung kinda over looked.
On the other hand ive used HTC devices before and there build quality even back when i was using the G1 was great, they make it feel solid along with adding the perfect amount of weight to the phone. Ive never had a problem with an HTC phone, only with there batterys, thats why i was kinda leery on the One X not having a removable back so if the battery does screw up like it has in my G1, HD2 and MT4G i can just easily put a new one in. But overall i dont mind it having less ram and no SD port because i pay for my dropbox monthly to have extra space.

In a nutshell. The sgs 3 is the same processor as the one x. Performance will be about the same with multi tasking being better on the sgs 3. You give up an sd card slot and a removable battery in favor of a better screen and more of a solid feel.

So what are your opinions on whats a better device and why its the better device. And before some one trys to bash me, i like other peoples review on devices and why than going by some internet post without hands on backing to it.

Its getting redundant with that same reply im getting. Like i stated in the OP "And before some one trys to bash me, i like other peoples review on devices and why than going by some internet post without hands on backing to it." I much rather take to a forum where the main phone is the HOX where people that will actaully reply used the One X and maybe both One X and SGS3 and can give me solid reasoning why. I trust some ones word that has used the device longer then just some one who is just doing a review because they have too...

Thanks for your questions. After all it is the General HTC one X forum!
Rather than waste a post with a school girl reply, I will help answer your question.
I have had both and took back the SGIII. I like the One X better, mainly because the SGIII screen does not work as well outdoors and the whites are more greyish than the One X.
Hope that helps?
What's not "wowing you" about the SGS 3? This info might get you a better answer.
We seem to be losing more and more people everyday to the sgs3. Source better come soon or I think this phone will be doomed development wise.

Should I buy the ONE S?

Hello people I am an owner of HTC Desire S and time has come to retire my phone and upgrade.
I am seriously considering getting the ONE S so I have a couple of question that you proud owners of it can probably answer.
1.Should I buy it even if I cant get the version with the S4 chip?
2.What are the major problems you have with the device?
Thanks in advance for you help
I just got my One S like about a week ago and I love the phone.
I have the S4 version and have not tested the S3 version. I would say even the S3 version, it should definitely be faster than the Desire S. While S3 is a little bit old, It maybe hard to tell unless you are extreme power user. I think in day to day use like browser, main interface, etc. the performance should not be much difference. I used to have rezound with the S3 chip and I cannot tell much difference. If you got one of the custom rom, then you would sure get hte best performance.
There is no major problem as far as I can tell. The form factor is really nice, so slim, yep hard to image after seeing so many htc phones are so bulky.
Don't get it if you can't get the s4 IMO. There are barely any devs for s3. You are paying the same price as s4 owner and getting an inferior product. I know s3 is fast but its still not an s4. If you are not planing on rooting your phone and running custom ROMs on it,then I think its OK to get s3.

You should definitely get the s4 model it is faster and you will notice the difference if you go hard on the processor.
Also as the lad said, there aren't that many devs for the s3 model. Meaning that you might not get some of the roms/tweaks availiable for the s4 version.

As another person looking at getting this One S, how can I tell if it has the S4 when I'm in the T-mobile store with it in my hand? What other useful information can you more experienced One S users provide to help me make the best phone choice?
I have read some reviews stating there is a problem with maintaining signal or the phones drains the battery rapidly. What say you?

Are you in the u.s.? If so, all one s are s4 version.
No battery drain or signal problems here, except to the extent that tmobile has less coverage than att generally.

I love my One S.
Yes, buy it. Fast, smooth, looks great. Had it for only a couple weeks but no problems. Running CM10 and it works great on this phone.
Do try at all costs to get the S4 though as it's the best processor out right now.

Speaking as someone who's just come directly from the Desire S I think you'll love it. The screen is so much brighter than the DS, bigger than the DS and it's so fast. The camera is fantastic in out door conditions especially. Some of the photos it takes you would honestly think were taken with a 12mp dedicated camera instead of a phone! Battery life is very good for a dual core phone as well. Lasts me on medium use about 1day 14 hours and 2days if I barely use it. My biggest problem with the device would be the pentile arrangement on the screen. You can see the pixels and the screen is very blueish. That being said after a couple weeks of using it you don't notice that at all and the screen becomes fantastic it's because your coming from a 3.7 inch s-lcd phone to with a very high resolution to a 4.3 inch super amoled display with a fairly good resolution so it takes a while to get used to. Go for it though, you won't be disappointed.
Am also thinking of buying it... Infact, am between 2 phones (htc sensation xe Or the one S)..
I watched a lot of videos for the one s, it looks great but am afraid only from the battery that can't be removed.. & was wandering if rooting the device is easy... One last thing also which is missing with my brain is the menu button.. i don't know how i will do in my life without it... i wonder if u guys get used to it or if it's not a big deal...
sorry for the posting big reply..

One S is better.
1. You won't need to do a battery pull. Ever.
2. Rooting is easy, look at some tutorials in the developer section (DO NOT ASK QUESTIONS IN THAT SECTION!! EVER!)
3. Menu button in built into the software. If you root you can remap any keyto be the menu button.
Hope I helped.

You help a lot bro, thank u... that cleared many things.
I'am going to buy it today.. but one last thing made me freak out a little.. which is the home screen seizure that happens to some of the users... just found it while roaming in a thread..
& since the phone am going to buy is black (international).. & it happens a lot for black ones... :/
That issue looks scary
Any ideas??

Eh?
It is still far better than a desire S even with the S3/adreno 220 and better than the XE (apart from storage options and you have removable batteries with them), excluding the GPU/CPU:
- far better camera overall, absolutely no contest between them
- way better build/perceived quality and IMO design/looks (subjective this)
- better screen overall (although some might prefer LCD on the XE and DS)
- battery life will still be better anyway
- more RAM
- much better audio
- newer device and will be getting jelly bean officially before the end of the year
- also another wee plus is that you will get more money when you sell the one S rather than the desire S and XE in a few months time or a year in order to fund for a new phone
Only reason to get the DS or XE is for a removable battery and SD slot and perhaps a better developing community (no idea what it is like for them)
Buy it, you won't regret it

Hey man you don't need to worry about the battery. It's fairly simple to root you just need to unlock your boatloader with HTC dev and its easy from there. The recent apps Button can actually be mapped as a menu button! It's an actual stock feature and that's how I have my phone. You press recent apps for menu and hold for recent apps

I went to the store today.. & i saw it again ( the one S ) i was drooling on it there & about to buy it... but i didn't know how to know if it has s4 or s3 chip...i read about it that u can know it from the benchmarks.. but the shopkeeper don't allow to turn on the phone :/
i searched the whole white box there looking for a clue but the processor written on the box was (Dual core) only..
is there another way to know if it's s4 without turning the phone on..(e.g : maybe the color of the box of s4 or if there something specific..).
the one in the store is black international version... & thanks in advance for all of u guys..
am really looking forward to use this phone with my hands since am going to evolve from wildfire o:
Yes, the store you went have the s3.
s4 you will see duel core 1.5ghz.
Another way is the model name - z520e for the s4 and z560e for the s3.

sorry but where is the model name?

What would you buy?

So with taxes I'm looking to spend about $350 on a phone with no contact. I WAS thinking the nexus 4 but people on craigslist are retarded asking $500+ because people bought out the play store with the intentions of reselling and ripping people off. So other than that I was thinking of getting an s3 or a note 1, possibly a one x.
My questions are, which carrier version, and which one should I get. I want one that I could use on family mobile with better speeds, maybe simple mobile or something. I'm into rooting and roms and overall best specs out there. So which phone should I get in that price range, and which carrier version? Processor and ppi as well as camera is most important to me.

I honestly would go for a razr Maxx hd.... Or an s3. The hd doesn't have as much rom support but it will once the price drops. Plus my battery lasts all day with super heavy data usage!

Personally, the Note is a little on the large side for a phone, however, some people like it. Would suggest that you get some extended hands on time with it out before buying. S3 has good feedback except for the build materials (i.e. drop and chip) and is roughly the form factor that I would be comfortable with and there is quite a bit of ROM development for it. A friend uses a Note 1 and swears by it, connects it up as a laptop at home with keyboard, mouse and monitor (his portable office). Haven't had a chance to test out the OneX but what I have read on the forums are that it has good battery life, solid performance and since it is basically stock, updates are quick. Just got WP8 as a xmas gift, from an SGS2. Don't recommend it, until they fix some pretty fundamental missing features but the camera is by far the best I have seen so far.

I've had nothing but good experiences with Samsung phones. Have a GS2 skyrocket and it's an awesome phone. ROM support is strong, and definitely affordable on your budget.
i would buy the htc one x+. i really like the htc os. a few years ago i bought the htc desire hd and i've never regretted it. so why not switching to another phone by htc
HTC One X looks very cute. But I heard about screen problems. I am most interested in Nexus 4, however it's not available in my country, but I would recommend it. I love that Nexus 4 has stock Android.
HTC one xl owner here....absolutely no screen problems. Gorgeous screen, great ROMs with great devs, great camera and battery life and you will find some at a very nice price. Only downside is storage and no external SD slot.
Funny u mention screen problems as I've heard the nexus 4 has some.
This phone is really good, not cheaply build like the s3 and personally I feel its better (hence why I chose it over the s3)
Oh and BTW our phones are pretty much unbrickable, flashing ROMs is a breeze and rooting can be done with a downloadable script. And they do t suffer from gs3 problems which they seem to be having plenty of.

Well, at the time of release, that was the feeling wasn't it . A 18% (I think off hand) increase in screen with a 25% increase in battery. So yea, it is basically an S2. 0.2GHz more and most everything else is the same.
I think you should go with all new Galaxy Note II has a 5.5-inch HD Super Amoled touchscreen display that supports 1280x720 pixel resolution natively which runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
