[Q] Battery Drain on Cynogenmod 10 JellyBean ROM 4.1.2 Updated 10/10 - Samsung Infuse 4G

I have upgraded my phone from stock 2.3.6 to the latest JellyBean][4.1.2]Unofficial CM10 - Updated 10/10 - Butter - MTD - OC Kernel by scott hart.
I am pleased with overall performance increase of my phone, however I'm facing great battery drain. From 100% charge to 4% it just last around 4 hours. Anyone who can help me understanding this??

reboot and charge it

Already done that few times, but that's not helping.

Let the ROM settle for a day or two. See what happens. My battery was fast the first day too.

Well it looks like you were on the screen for a while...plus had some media playing in the background...music or videos?
I'd like to see the more detailed one...like how many hours screen was on, or clicking the battery graph at the top and seeing what it displays there for awake and screen time length on that...
Cause if the screen was on for most of that time...then what do you expect? If the screen wasn't on that much...then something sounds a little strange...

Set any sync you have to off or the maximum interval.
Adjust the automatic screen brightness levels, I posted a thread, "custom backlight settings". Turning down the brightness levels will help tremendously.
For the best battery benefit, turn automatic brightness off and set the brightness level as low as you can tolerate.
Set screen timeout to 15seconds.
Turn off any vibrate notifications or keyboard vibrations. You'd be surprised how much battery vibrate uses.
Download Justin inverted gapps. They are mostly a dark black theme.
Also set your wallpaper to a black or dark background. Anything but white! Making the screen mostly show darker colors reduces battery consumption.
Turn off auto update in play store.
Turn off WiFi, GPS, and Bluetooth whenever possible.
Advanced users only... you can under clock to 800mhz. This may produce some lag, but will help save battery.
You can also under volt, there are plenty of threads on here describing a safe way to go about doing this.
Hope this helps. And good luck

After seeing that Mediaserver usage I already turned off all the syncs. I can see some improvement and right now I'm reducing screen dim level.
The only thing that is bothering me now is sometimes my processor usage is 100% for a good 10 minute or so (no foreground process running) which makes my phone really hot. This is only thing now I need help from you guys, thank u all for relying. mg2195 i'm attaching screen shots.

How to adjust the brightness other than the default range?

I found the captivate drain battery too fast, even at the lowest brightness the phone gives. So I am thinking about maybe we could further turn down the brightness of the screen, this might save a lot battery.
But how??

I noticed that from JF6 to JH7, the brightness went down one tick lower. When I had stock JF6 set to manual brightness, I used to not have a hard time reading the contents on the display while the phone is on my desk, set to the lowest setting. When I did the JH7 OTA update, I noticed that the lowest brightness setting (when set to manual) is even lower. It made it harder to read. Hope that answers your question on brightness settings. There is more on JH7 than just the brightness settings changes. Plus, there are other things you can do to save battery power than just adjusting the display brightness
When I go into Settings, About and battery use.
It show that the Display using about 60% of the power.
Everything is relative on that page. If all you do is turn on the screen and browse, the "Display" battery usage will be higher. If you're on the phone for an hour or so (which, by default, the display turns off) you'll see "Voice calls" number go up. Etc.

Basically it's saying, the time you've had your device unplugged, 60% of the battery usage has been due to the display. and 40% of it is among other things.
There's an app on the market called Dimmer that will knock the brightness down a bit from the lowest setting. There's a small window that pops up that says "changing brightness from XX to 10" where XX = 30 on the lowest setting via the default brightness settings.
This makes me suspect that the brightness could go even lower, though I don't if it would impact the performance of the screen, given the Super AMOLED tech.

This is normal..All this means is your display is using the most and you don't have any background programs eating the battery. It should always show this as the highest from what I've been told.
In settings you can can either use the automatic brightness setting..or not... it is in Sound and Display..scroll down to display settings and you will see Brightness...Screen Time Out...and Power Saving Mode . Click on Power Saving mode....if you see the green check mark there..you are unchecking it..then open the Brightness tab..click on automatic brightness adjustment if checked and do the same thing ..and then ok. Your screen will darken.. You can then install the power bar on one of your screens by touching a unpopulated area large enough to accept the power bar strip. You will then be able to adjust the brightness by tapping on it..as well as being able to turn on and off wi-fi..blue-tooth..satellite..sync..and lastly brightness.
Mac
This is good. It turns my screen from 30 to 10, and it does save battery.

Theres also an app called Screen Filter which does the same thing as you guys have been describing, except it has a slider you can use to set what you would like, I use it for reading in bed, and it works wonderfully.

another way to save battery..and your eyes too

i downloaded this apps name
screen filter
it will reduce the brightness of your screen that is far more better than the android brightness..just dont set the brightness to 0 because it will turn your brightness off
thanks
will try it
works especially well with the "darkness" script at night, as mentioned in This Thread Thanks to Adolf1994 my LED will not blind me at night any more! (script only for rooted 2.1 and above)
how does the app work? and how much battery can it save, for example, a day?
Just what I wanted for day-to-day use.
I prefer renderFX's "night mode" for eye-saving, but this is good for battery-saving. My display is set at 0% and still is the most battery-hungry thing on my phone...
thanks
you reminded me that there's such a app
very useful

WORD OF CAUTION!!!!!
DO NOT LEAVE THIS APP ON WHILE YOUR PHONE SLEEPS!!!
I haven't determined that this is the culprit, but last night I went from ~80% to ~25%, all the while having WI-FI off (I have 3G off always anyway), closed most programs, and had a screen filter on 30%.
I think the filter prevented the phone from fully sleeping or something....
Just some caution, please try it and report back.
I haven't experienced that and I've been using it for 5days..anyway in order to track the culprit, install an APk named process watch dog.

Actually, it will not save battery, if not drain it faster.
Here's why:
What this app is doing is applying a transparent dark filter over the screen,
so that you can look at it in a dark enviroment and not hurt your eyes from the brightness.
BUT the screen itself uses exactly the same power to light, but you don't see it, because the filter is there.
For example: if you set your brightness to FULL and then apply the filter and make it really dark, the battery drain will be the same as if you didn't apply the filter.
That's the way TFT screens work.
Now, this filter is running constantly, so it's a CPU stresser, thus battery drainer.
That being said, I love the app and I always have it on while I'm in the movies,
but I don't recommend it for daily use 24/7.
Thanks in the darkness it's just the best app

I use it every night and I don't think it drains battery noticeably. 1% per hour maybe?

Depending in your personal phone usage, it might not be a battery drainer, but, as I explained above, it's not a saver either.

Need HELP: 2.3.6 bug?

Updated SR with the OTA 2.3.6 update... everything "appeared" to go perfectly. However, I just noticed my "Brightness" control in Display Settings is now greyed-out... can't change the display brightness. To further add to the mystery, when I plug into the AC power, the Brightness control is functional; however, as soon as I disconnect from AC power, the Brightness control goes back to being greyed out and cannot be adjusted.
Anyone else run into this after the 2.3.6 update? I was rooted with stock recovery when I did the update... after update, remained rooted and everything worked perfectly.. EXCEPT when I noticed the Brightness control was greyed-out. Any suggestions on how I can regain display brightness control when running on battery power? Thx
Do you have it set to "auto"?

Yes, I had Automatic Brightness checked... but couldn't uncheck it once the control got disabled. After a full re-charge, the Brightness option is no longer greyed-out under battery power Does anyone know if this functionality gets disabled when battery gets below 15%? What's odd however is that when it got disabled, the screen went to full brightness...then couldn't be managed, so counterintuitive on what it should be doing under low battery conditions! One would think it would dim to 10% brightness first, then disable the Brightness functionality (if in fact the stock ROM/kernel does disable brightness function at low battery conditions).
You might have the power management settings turned on....you can set it to automatically do things after the battery drops below a certain point (such as 20, 15, 10%). Sounds like what might have happened. I haven't noticed any changes due to the update.
Power mgmt was and still is off. It just happened again. Seems like when battery drops below 10%, the Brightness option gets greyed - out and cannot be used. I don't have any other power mgmt apps loaded, so it must be new to 2.3.6. Can anyone else (on OTA 2.3.6) confirm when battery level drops below 10%, your Brightness contol gets greyed-out?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using XDA App
I had that with the 2.3.6 update. Below 10% I couldn't adjust brightness with the stock setting, or with any 3rd party app. it started out full dim, then at around 5% went full bright. The battery saver feature was disabled. I've returned the phone, and I'm not updating my new Skyrocket.
I used the cwmable package from Mikey and silver03wrx and this is not an issue. Its the same 2.3.6 update just rooted and of course in .zip form.

[Q] Do the screen power saving options on this phone make a real difference?

The settings on the S3 have the following power saving options available: Auto adjust screen tone, Screen Power Saving and background color. Do any of these settings have a decent or better impact on battery life? I have a hyperion 4200 battery and use Lux autobrightness to lower screen brightness below zero when I dont need a bright screen, and seem to have my phone currently doing okay when it comes to wake locks, so wondering if these options make any noticeable difference in battery life or are they more gimmicky like a lot of the other settings choices.
I think the data syncs are more of a culprit than auto brightness settings but then again I have auto brightness on and it still helps. I notice my wife's phone gets better battery life than mine because she doesn't have as much data syncs in the background as I do even though she is constantly playing word games. She doesn't use FB, Twitter, Google plus, Google Music or Dropbox and I do. We both charge our phones at night but she has more screen time than I usually, stock batteries too.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
I consider my battery life to be okay. I use my phone a lot so I cant expect the multiday cycles people have. I wanted to know this more for information. I have all my auto syncs off except for youmail, which i need on to update my custom voicemail greetings. To sync everything, i wrote a tasker action to sync everything everytimebi connect to a wifi access point other than gmail. For gmail, i have it set to sync every other time the screen turns on. I am able to do this because of the synker app from play store.
I'd say power save works. Extra hour maybe.
I turn off WiFi and data when I don't use it and my phone last all day with heavy texting and frequent WiFi use.
Running clean rom
With lean kernel

[Q] Auto brightness

What am i missing regarding screen auto brightness? I keep having to manually change brightness when going from light to dark places even though i have "adapt to lighting conditions" ticked?
It feels like im wasting battery having the screen so bright at night unless i turn it down, then I have to turn it up again in the morning.. Some secret setting?

Same here, Someone said that the screen does dim but it does so slowly so you barely notice it! Hoever iam not convinced! Iam almost certain mine is not adjusting at all
For normal day light conditions i feel the auto brightness adjusts very well. Its definitely better than the s4 i had. I have the auto brightness selected and the bar at 50%. I agree for night time reading i have to manually adjust the brightness may be its not as quick to adjust in very low light conditions compared to day light
I was using CM11 on the S4 which had very good brightness control, not sure about standard. I agree during the day I don't have problems at all, and the screen is very good. It's just when I'm somewhere with low brightness and I have to turn it down, and then when I go back into day I have to turn it back up again. Pretty annoying having to change it all the time.
I will get an app to do it for me for now, but this must be some sort of bug this action couldn't be on purpose.

I find the auto brightness not very good.
Sometimes when the lighting condition does not change, it will start to increase/decrease the brightness to the level which does not suit the lighting condition.
It also have the tendency to favor lower brightness.
Thinking of trying out Lux Auto Brightness instead.

I don't know if you mean to test the sensor, but the sensor works absolutely fine (with other apps)
My auto brightness works just fine and i have mine on lowest possible setting.
