What's so special about 3.x Kernel? - myTouch 4G General

Hi why is everyone so eager to get the 3.x kernel?

With a well functional 3.0 kernel we can have ics working near perfect with our device.

It's a secret
Sent from my HTC One S running ViperOneS!

Many of the features that make ICS and JB so cool rely on the 3.0.x+ kernel. One of these, as I understand it, is project butter. Another, of course, is a fully functional rear cam and ffc, including video and at 720p, all without a HAL.
Sent from my HTC Glacier using xda app-developers app

Yep, project butter is kernel 3 only. Also, JB does NOT natively support below kernel 3 and ICS doesn't do it well so kernel 3 just makes everything faster

I C. thanks for all the info.

(Q) Going from virtous inquisition to cm9

Hello everyone.
I would like some feedback from people like me that are running v.i. 4.0.3 that have flashed the new cm9 4.0.4
Do you find it as good as v.i. any major bugs or antthing else i should know before i flash.
Thank you!
I was using VI for while but now I am sold on CM9. VI is basically geared for the people who wanted AOSP ICS but weren't content to use a buggy build like Quattro or TripNDroid. Now that it is getting pretty damn stable and we have BT and 1080p, I don't really see any reason to remain on VI if you're an AOSP-type guy.
Besides, it has a lot of extra features VI doesn't have.

I move back and forth because I need wifi tethering. My Internet provider has been flaky lately and I need to be online. If it weren't for that, I'd be on cm9 fully. It just like VI but snappier!

i havent tried cm9 yet because you cant superwipe and that really makes me nervous. What exactly did u guys do before flashing?
I still use Senseless roms cause CM9 is only marginally faster and the AOSP camera is just terrible. You can't refocus video (yet?) while recording, so hopefully you're not recording any moving objects.
The cm9 it's much faster and more responsive I am using it now and love it I switch back and fourth from ordroid

I installed thru 4EXT Recovery. Made sure I had the correct firmware, downloaded OpenSensation and the GAPPS (Google apps pack) placed both on my SD card. Backed up my current ROM. Wiped phone, data and dalvik cache. Flashed Opensensation, flashed GAPPS and rebooted phone. No problems so far. It is slightly more responsive and allows you to set your Ghz for speed or battery life. The AOSP camera does suck though...

Whilst I liked CM9 quite a lot, I agree with this statement.
I personally found CM9 smooth, but not quite as responsive as VI. And yes, the ICS camera app does not even get close to HQ camera in terms of quality.
VI is great at the moment, just wouldn't mind having the screen off animation added

I personally think CM9 is more responsive, no HTC bloatware added. The AOSP camera is slightly worse as it has the large grey margin on the side, but then again, I do like the Panorama function, the refocusing sound is also a lot better than the one on Sense
I must admit that I'm a bit disappointed after trying CM9. It is way slower than my Desire HD with CM7. CM7 is great, blazingly fast, and lets you put the launcher entirely in the RAM. There's close to zero possibilities yet, with CM9. Not many options for tweaking, etc.
The stability is horrible, too. I flashed it 30 minutes ago, and it has already crashed three times, even though I wiped everything before the flash.
Not quite fit for use, yet.

AOSP, CM9, AOKP When they will be perfect?

What do you think? Right now I am using ARHD + AOSP Script and I am really happy but from long time I want to try an AOSP rom. For now the thing that is holding me back that they have some known bugs and probably more unkown or too little too be mentioned but annoying. I am waiting for a long time but I am still not convinced that these roms are perfect and I want bugless rom and for now ARHD is giving me this. What do you when AOSP will be flawless will it happen?
Try the latest AOKP (b35). I've been using it for over 24 hours and haven't found any bugs

AOKP is based on OpenSensation so whatever bugs that has, AOKP has.
I don't think we'll fond a stable aosp build for a while. Bluetooth, sound drivers and other miscellaneous drivers are all hacked up drivers. I'd stick with something that is based on Sense with the aosp framework for stability and performance.
That's me though

Build 35 is the best Aosp Rom so far for Sensation. Zero bugs, and the Theme Chooser is a welcome addition.

Yes sense is stable...but aosp or aokp perform just as good or better then sense. Hyperaokp I dont use Bluetooth or GPS so I rarely get bugs.
Benefit of sense? Doesnt overheat quickly,
Battery life as well
AOSP still hasnt figured out the way htc handles the 2 cores, where one core is used until 2nd needed.
AOSP kernels have progressed to as where it uses a single core when the screen is off, but both cores are on wwhen screen is on, resulting in lots of heat and short battery life

I haven't had any problems with multitouch. Make sure you're disabling HTC gestures under the "Display and Gestures" settings. If you don't disable it, multitouch is limited to two points. Disabling this feature enables 10 point multitouch.

lol multitasking was already fixed by Calkulin, but he hasn't released his ROM yet
Currently they found the framework issue that messes with multitasking and once combined with 2.xx ROMs that increase available RAM to the user it should drastically help with multitasking.

4.0.4 already greatly improved multitasking. I tried going back to 4.0.3 and it was impossible.
ive gotten up to 440mb free ram on cm9 but noticed it still wasnt multitasking correctly, possibly because it uses the htc kernel?

Because the kernel in CM9 is based on 4.0.3 which has the butchered multitasking.
They worked wonders as far as sense 4 being a resource hog in 4.0.4. It's twice as smooth literally, and has more free ram. I'd love to know where the fat was trimmed. Amazing what software tweaks can do.

No, it has a revised version of sense and new settings for multitask because it is the new 2.x base.
And yes it is a big improvement. There was nothing wrong with it other than the settings were very aggressive.
CleanRom 4.1 or 4.2 with the level 2 multitask mod works great and it is based on 1.x base. The mod just changes the parameters. Old kernel new settings works great. So it really wasn't sense, just tuned wrong.
I recommend just joining us on the new CR4.5. It is the best Rom out there.
If you want the old base, use CR4.1. Bunches of mods, incredible battery life! 4.1 is probably the best all around as far as bugs, there really aren't any! 4.2 is ok, but not as smooth overall compared to 4.1.
I recently tested all radios for speed, and 1.91 is the clear winner. I posted all my results in the CR4.5 thread.
Standard edition is fine for daily driver use.

I've read many people say 4.0.4 is like 4.0.3 with the multitasking mod, but I completely disagree with that statement. I tried going back to 4.0.3 with multitasking mod to try out the Beastmode kernel. While the 192min/1200max underclock gave me extremely good battery life, the multitasking felt horrendous after playing around with 4.0.4.

Bug-free AOSP rom?

So I've tested many roms here on xda and I can clearly say that I couldn't find any bugless fom. (No offence for devs) When I used to usd HTC Desire there was an oxygen rom which was really bug free. (I've reached 1000hrs uptime without even single FC) Does rom like this exist for sensation? I don't care about android version.

That's not really true EVERY Rom no matter the dev or company has bug's. That's why updates are always released . Since your asking for a bug free rom i am using a sense 4.1 rom with no Major bug's well tbh i been using for 1 week and not any bug's i found with anything and i have tested it to the max over clocked to 1.7GHz and runs like a rocket. No FC doesn't mean there is no bug. It might also be that you haven't used all the features yet. There are bugs where something doesn't work in the intended way, but without FC.

Been using PACMan since I rooted my One S a few months back. Excellent ROM, HALO seems better in functionality compared to Illusion. Also PAC seems more stable. But try it for yourself and see, each device is different.
mkinney88 stock ROM is smooth and he doesn't push users to "faq" when or if questions arise. He helps as much as he can.
I'm using viper one s 2.2. I tried cm10.1 for about a week. I can't remember exactly why I decided to switch, I don't remember any problems with it. I've used viper long enough to know its really stable. I'm doing less frequent preventative reboots and cache cleaning than I used to with no issues so far. Battery life is good.

Come to think of it, I switched because I felt that a Rom built off a stock HTC base may be more reliable/stable than an aosp ported Rom. I wanted to settle on a Rom to keep long term before getting everything set up, so I didn't keep cm long enough to find any bugs.
Sent from my HTC One S using xda app-developers app
Imho the stock (rooted) rom is still the best bet. But only if you have that little bit of knowledge and you are willing to make by yourself the mods that you like (such as autobrightness, battery pecentage, etc.).
I'm running the Xperia rom from taylor, and I'm very happy with it. Very good battery life. And it't running very smooth, but it doesn't have Halo. I like to have Halo, but almost every rom with Halo have a really short battery life.....

All other AOSP-based have problems elsewhere, I need Bluetooth and external camera apps (Snapchat etc) so that rules out Sense 5 ROMs, and Sense 4+ ROMs look inferior and pathetic now.
So yeah, for AOSP ROMs look no further than AOKP, and for Sense based ROMs I recommend you use mine different theme to all other Sense 5 ROMs and is just better
