sgs3 is eating SIM cards - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

How many people have had to get a new SIM card to get their phone working properly?
How many different reasons have a new SIM card been needed for?
I've heard of a lot of people needing a new SIM card to receive the OTA.
I had to get a new SIM card as my phone would no longer switch to 4G.
Is there a hardware or software issue with this phone causing SIM cards to malfunction?
Is there anyone who's needed a SIM card replaced that has Not flashed or rooted their phone in anyway?
thanks,

I needed one to be able to check for updates.

Do you root and flash roms or other things on your phone?
I'd like to narrow down if this only happens on phones where that is done.
and then to nail down what we are flashing that is wrecking these sim cards if that is the common factor.

I had to get one once I went back to stock to receive ota. I do run a custom rom normally.

Mine is fine, but the other three in my household after receiving g7 can no longer check for updates. I wonder if Samsungs "no sim fix" somehow killed them. All three are unrooted, and never have been.
I have not yet replaced their sims.

Odin'd back to stock to receive updates, had to get a new sim in order for it to work. I run custom as well. I think it has something to do with how the sims are identified on the LTE network since Sprint and At&t don't have this issue.

Never rooted or ran a custom rom...100% stock. Someone mentioned that the update may have fried the sim cards....that's my thought as well.

Problem with that theory though is lots of people had to get a new sim card just to be able to take the ota.
Good to know this isn't necessarily cause from flashing roms and what not.

I also had the problem checking for OTA updates. I received the update just fine and then had the problem. I went to the Verizon store and the switched the SIM card out and problem was resolved.

Both my brother and I had to get new sim cards for 4g due to the phone warping our cards.

I had to get a new sim card when I upgraded from the galaxy nexus to the gs3. I believe it was because I had done a manual prl update when it was in the nexus. it seemed to work just fine in that phone but once I put it in the gs3 I couldn't get 4g unless I switched to 4g only.

I was on the latest OTA and I hadn't checked for an OTA since Oct. 3rd and tried yesterday and got a error. Went to Verizon and he said he didn't know if any issue with SIM cards being fried with GS3. I'm all stock and he argued that a new SIM wouldn't fix. I got him to do it anyways and now checking for updates works again. He still doesn't think it was a SIM card. But i beg to differ.

Had to pay 10 dollars and 40 minutes of my time at the corporate store for them to tell me they couldn't give me one, had to buy one, but it fixed my OTA issue. I'm gonna rub it in the "it appears you have done this thing called rooting your phone" guy's face. No s***. I flash a new rom every hour...

Sim card not detected

Lately out of the blue when I pull my phone out my pocket I see a pop up saying sim card not detected then I have 2 options. Shutdown or reboot. Is this the phone quality built a little out of place or what? I'm sure someone here has seen this message if not all of ya have.

Personally I would go to ATT and see if you can get a new sim...because apparently something is not right with the sim card.
or or or
It could be the ROM you are running, If you are running a Rom...
Running android revolution 5.1.6. Crazy how could it be the rom?
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
Possibly just a bad installation...
Although it is a reliable ROM they all have glitches, possibly it is the ROM and you should try re flashing it and if the problem is fixed you know it was the ROM, and if it doesnt work Like i said before, your going to have to take a trip to ATT.
It could also be some type of hardware failure in your phone, not sure though.
Have you tried using the SIM in a different phone?
Faulty SIMs aren't unheard of.
Nope just this one. It only pops up every now and then but today it did it twice back to back so now I was like wtf. And decided to ask if anybody else seen this before.

My sister once had a bad 3G SIM card that would only work on EDGE. We were right by an EDGE/3G border, so we could take 3 steps forward and have a working phone in the EDGE zone, or 3 steps back into 3G and have nothing.
My Tilt phone worked fine in both "zones," so I put in her SIM and had no signal in the 3G area, heh.
Oh.. well if the problem is persistant ill just get then to make me another similar

Uh oh...
Same problem for me here as well. Running CM7, was working fine until later in the evening when suddenly the network "died", and after several reboots noticed the little SIM problem icon next to the signal meter. I had the card locked, but went into settings and unlocked it. Now, logically if the phone couldn't read the card then technically I shouldn't have been able to change the PIN, so...
Confused over here. Is there a known fix to this? Or worse - how do I broach the subject with ATT if I have to go in?

I don't know about the fix about it, but concerning talking with AT&T, I'd recommend calling Warranty exchange first. They'll let you go through some hoops like getting your imei and possibly cleaning out your sim card with a rubber eraser. They'll also run some network tests on your phone to see if there are any "down towers" in your area. In the end, just request for a replacement sim card from them and have them note on your account that you want to get it free. Ask for confirmation if it's in your account, then head for the nearest AT&T corporate store. They'll tell you you'll have to pay $25 to get a replacement sim card or something, but just say that warranty sent you and it's noted on the account: should get you your sim for free, if possible.
I have never had a problem getting a new sim card for free from a corporate store. Just go in and ask for one.

[Q] Can random re-boots be caused by a bad sim card?

Hi all,
I have my primary phone which is an international SGSII and I have my Infuse as my secondary phone.
I experienced random reboots on my SGSII which I couldnt seem to explain and I started using my Infuse for a while now and it has now started to randomly reboot which it only has started doing since I put my sim card in it and had NEVER done it with no sim card in it so... Can these issues be being caused by a bad sim card?
The card itself is a bit old...
Please advise...
Anything's possible i guess, if you didn't change anything else or install any software on both that might have caused i would assume it would be the sim card.
Try one or the other for a day without the sim card and the other with sim card and see what happens. Then switch and re-test.
Interested in knowing if it's the sim card or not, as a last resort you could just buy a new sim card from an AT&T store.

Very possible since Samsung has implemented (since the Galaxy Tab 7" i think) a little "feature" where it forces your phone to reboot when it cant see the SIM. Its possible that the SIM is loosing contact and forcing a reboot. Hard to be sure though.

Lost Cell Service

I was changing my V6 Supercharger settings yesterday when I noticed my cell service crap out. I thought it was due to me changing from build.prop to local.prop, but changing the setting back did not resolve the issue. So, I unSupercharged.. nothing. Wiped data, cache, dalvik and reinstalled Tweakstockv1.1.. nothing (via CWR). Odin'd Tweakstockv1.. nothing. Odin'd Tweakstockv1.1... nothing (left battery and SIM in while Odin'ing, like I usually do).
I tried pulling the battery and SIM card but that didn't help. I checked my Verizon account - it's active.
What in the fudgeballs just happened? Does it sound like a fried SIM?
I just Odin'd Tweakstockv1 for ****s and gigs WITHOUT the battery and SIM card installed... No cell service, but mobile data came back.
What in the balllllllls?
Flash it back to stock and bring it to Verizon store.
It may just be a bad SIM card. Take the card into the store and they should replace it for free. May want to flash back stock as recommended above prior to your visit.

You might be right with the bad sim card idea. Its always been recommended to Odin without sim card in phone.
I've stumbled across people who have needed to go into Verizon and get a new sim card.

Can I use a coworker's SIM card to test? Or do I need a brand new one from Verizon? I'm thinking I can use another SIM card since Verizon activates via the device's IMEI?

wont work like that with Verizon. Your co-worker with have to unregister their device with that sim. Than you would have to register that sim to your phone. More hassel than your co-worker is going to want to deal with.

No sim card error?? Any solutions??

This is not my forum, I don't have one yet, I have the bell, samsung galaxy s2 hd lte. It's a brand new device 9 days old, it started yesterday saying "no sim card inserted " I had you pull the battery and sim card then reboot, it was fine again for 12 hours now it's happened twice?? Anyone else experienced this??
Our phones are similar, bell said get a new sim, which I will tomorrow, however after a Google search this seems to be a popular error with the s2.
Thanks

Are you on the stock ROM? Are you rooted? Did you flash anything to the phone or change the ROM, Kernel, or modem? If you haven't done any of this, I would try the new SIM card. If that doesn't work, exchange the phone. If you have done something, try going back to stock and see if it resolves the issue. Alot of times it comes down to the modem / radio being mismatched to a ROM or Kernel.
im having the same problem, the way to fix it is odin flash the firmware from sammobile, buttt i cant connect my phone via usb anymore thus im stuck with this problem ;(
2 Possible Solutions(Easy Fix)
1, wait out the data outage in your area. We are on ATT and having the same exact issue and when I called 611(Customer Service) the automated answering system told me that they are currently experiencing data outages in my area. could be due to a tower/service upgrade being that 4G is coming out in more areas now.
2, call 611 and set up your phone model with the customer service rep at the technical support extension.
I would put a 3rd option... but I haven't tried flashing a new rom yet, I just got the Skyrocket as a free refurb from Insurance and I am currently on an unrooted stock GB ROM.
yes flashing to original rogers tar using odin did fix it.. but if i try other roms its broken again, so for now it looks like ill have to stay with the original firmware
If you flash the ucle2 modem in SeanZscreams post it will most likely fix the issue on each Rom you flash as long as you flash the modem after.

To check to see if its your SIM card, use a USB Adapter or microSD -> SD adapter. Back up all your files then reformat it using: https://www.sdcard.org/downloads/formatter_3/ and then put back all your stuff and try again.
try this or other plp that have this problem try this pliz an coment

The error message that said I needed to insert a valid sim card happened again today while traveling home.
The good news is I think I figured it out!
The Galaxy S4 requires a "nfc" enabled sim card!
You can't tell by looking at the tiny sim but the larger card the sim comes in has a notation of "nfc" if it's the right card.
I hung out in the Verizon store after inserting it and the drove home "an hour drive" and absolutely no errors!
And I maintained a 4g signal throughout my whole trip which was through some back country where signal is usually marginal.
This is a pretty serious problem for Verizon.
Why?
1. Because if I would have ran around in safe mode it still would have errored.
2. If I would have reformatted to factory settings... The same... All for nothing and days of configuration lost.
3. If I got another new phone, again the same.... All because I would be using my same sim card.!
I'm sure many replace the whole phone "and" sim together and when it works it's assumed the problem was the phone or software.
What a terrible headache for the customer, tech support, and verizon customer service just because people don't know the proper sim card needed for the S4!

Stock JB Update Hosed up my radios?

I was blissfully working just fine on my MZ602 Xoom. I would pop the Micro SIM card out of my phone and into an adapter whenever I wanted to use the Xoom. It worked flawlessly.... that is, until I updated to JellyBean. Now the Xoom will not even SEE a SIM card.
I went to Verizon store today and the guy was about as helpful as diving gear in the sahara. He said you should not be able to pop a phone SIM into a tablet and it works... well that's BS cause I've been doing it for almost 2 years. "Well, then the update must have fixed a bug that allowed you to do that"... no duh sherlock... pop a SIM in from your repository and make sure the things even works still and I'll buy a tablet package. Well, he did and it did the same thing, no connection. "Not under warranty so, sorry man". Thanks for nothing, no I don't want a new tablet!
[/Rant]
I have since flashed the ICS radios and have the same issue. I have tried stock, non stock, rooted, non-rooted, Honeycomb with ICS radios, JellyBean radios.... nothign works, it no longer sees a SIM.
Previously when I popped in a SIM it would take a minute or two and then see signal, sometimes requiring a reboot, now it doesn't even recognize that a SIM was inserted. Before even if it wasn't picking up signal and I removed the SIM it would give a warning "SIM removed, reboot?" or somethign like that.
Currently running CM10.1 with the IMM76I radios. Works on WiFi but will not see any SIM card... am I hosed? Any help?!
Anyone?
How about this... Does anyone here still use their 4G Xoom on the Verizon network?
I plan to steal sim card from my wife ipad and try if I can find my sim adaptor. Will let you know.
I can tell you that my xoom no longer shows 4g network but always did before the update even though the sim card wasn't activated.

Yes, used Rogue to manually flash ICS radios to no avail.
Previous load was 100% stock, unrooted on OEM bootloader and using stock recovery so the JB updated radios original flash was done properly.
I tried the Sim card from wife's iPad and it seemed to work OK. Although it seemed to connect a lot more to the 3g network than LTE and I have very song LTE signal. Radio doesn't seem quite as good as Previous.
