I need android firmware upgrade - Captivate General

I have a problem I reverted back to the original eclair android 2.1 firmware because my wifi wouldn't work. Heres the thing I go to samsungs website but it says to upgrade you need kies mini to do it. I have windows 7 and can never get to recognize my phone I tried installing drivers it just never worked. I do have a desktop that still has good old windows xp so when I wanna add anything to my phone I do it through that means. My main question is first whats the best firmware version that can be run on samsung captivate. I understand you need to install them in order eclair>froyo>gingerbread. My other question is if I install kies mini on my windows xp machine which doesn't currently have internet to it can I do the upgrade that way without any problems? I was also wondering whats a good stable rom to use?I tried to do att update but i forgot to unfreeze the att apps with titanium backup now I have to wait 24 hours lol but I need an app from the playstore my friend released I'm stuck with market and can get half the apps I had Thanks for any help I really appreciate it. oh and yes my phone is rooted.

I went from Froyo to Jelly Bean on my captivate. Check out Helly Bean or Slim Bean ROMs, both have working version for captivate. I would recommend Slim Bean as its considerably smoother given the limited (outdated) specs of cappy.
GL

I just found this site which has a kies version specifically to my phone.
samsung.com/us/support/owners/product/SEG-I897ZKAATT
I also figured out why my samsung would never be recognized for my pc running windows 7. It has something to do with my usb port because when I connect through a usb hub it works fine.
OMG it works Kies Mini works. I also had to unroot my phone first and then remove external sd card.
Im fully updated to Gingerbread now 2.3
Here is my specs I used odin and installed Kernal KK4
How do I load roms to use on my device
model munber
samsung-sgh-i897
firmware version

See TRusselo's Guide in the Q & A Forum. It is a Stickied Thread.

I was I got stuck on the step where it says to flash to speed mod kernel.
When I do that my phone gets stuck at a loading screen saying
"Samsung i897" in white letters with samsung logo at bottom of screen with black background. When I changed my kernel back to KK4 it worked fine again and loaded back.

The speedmod kernel is just so u can have cwm recovery to flash ur Rom of choice. It is not meant to boot ur phone.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium

So if I install a jelly bean slim I lose gingerbread? Which would make some of my apps incompatible from play store? I was also wondering whats with bootloaders and how can I ensure I have it. Judging form my specs is there anything else I need to do before loading a rom or literally just put the rom in a zip folder on one of my sd cards internal or external boot into recovery mode and choose the rom of my choice and from there it will load that rom and thats it?

If u were running kk4 with no probs, then u have the i897 gb bootloaders. And yep, if u flash a jellybean rom u will loose gb. And in order to go back to gb base u will have to use Odin or Heimdall.
As far as flashin a Dev Rom goes...if u have cwm recovery then u r good to go.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using xda premium

I flashed corn kernel 7.06.It gives u cement recovery and ability to root thru recovery. From there u just follow thread for Tom u want.
Sent from my SGH-I897 using xda app-developers app

I have had good success with AOKP open Kang you can flash from recovery. They have page on rootwiki that walks through the process. Current version is build 5 once that's installed I change kernels to semaphore 2.4.5c semaphore provides over clocking I'm set at 110% and the phone screams. Also semaphore has a Google play app to manage the kernel. Both developer groups are top notch with solid links for download and change log.

Slim Beans 2.8 is also based on semaphore kernel and yes it runs quite smoothly on old cappy as mentioned above.

Slim bean is pretty nice

so what would i have to do coming from one of the first ICBINB roms? i'd like to just run the stock GB if possible. can i just update it? or would the custom / rooted rom not allow me to?

Yeah, I'm wondering how to do this from a froyo rom too. I'd love stock Gingerbread.

i just wonder if you plug in the rooted / custom rom'd phone it would have a chance to brick it , etc etc. i know with my hd2 anytime you flashed a stock rom (wm 6.5 lol) it would simply override everything
I'm on audiophile. I'll try the upgrade and let you guys know how it goes

Thanks, I am running Linux on my Laptop and Kies doesn't work through VM so this will definitely help me.
I upgraded through keis with two.sgs4g phones. One had trigger kd1 ROM with root voodoo cwm the other was never modified just kd1. Both you need to press speaker twice during call to get mic working in a call. How do I fix ? I did factory reset too.

ICS to Gingerbread HELP?!?!

Today I bought a slightly outdated Nexus S 4G
I immediately received an update from 2.3.7 to 4.0.4 although I was fully aware it was out of my GB comfort zone, I performed the update because people said ICS was quicker, and more responsive. Within the first 2 minutes of using I was unsatisfied. I tried to find ways of reverting back to GB, but I couldn't find much help. I don't know how to use Odin and my phone is not rooted. I can't use the recovery option without getting the 'sleeping' android with its chest open, then I have to do a battery pull. I HATE ICS and desperately want to go back to GB. Although this is most likely in the wrong forum I don't care. I just need help
Sent from my Nexus S 4G using XDA
Here's what I would do. Root the phone, after reading through the proper "how to's". Then you will have several Gingerbread options ... all the way from Cyanogen Mod and all it's options, down to Peter Alfonso's stock rooted versions, and Oxygen by Adam G. Once rooted, your phone's performance will be greatly enhanced, especially with GB.

Dude root your phone theres so many guides on how to do that.. and ask at q&a section not here..
Sent from my Nexus S®
1) Root Nexus S
2) Install latest CWM Recovery
3) Download Stock Gingerbread Rom From here
4) Flash it using CWM
That's it!
Nothing to really add, but how can you judge something off of using it for 2 minutes? Seems like a pretty harsh judgement for something you've barely used.
I have the same question i have a nexus s on the aokp crespo milestone 5 rom my nexus s is rooted and the bootloader is unlocked how do i go back to gingerbread (cm 7.1)

Download the cm7 in cyanogen site. Then go to goo.im and find the latest GB gapps.
Boot i to recovery
Go to mount and storage format /data/boot/system/cache. Wipe dalvic cache. Flash rom and flash gapps.

before you go back to GB, I really suggest you try CM9, It's much snappier than GB.

Root. Profit.
Custom Rom on 4.0.4 is better than Stock GB hands down!

Same here, but with a i9023
I:
rooted my phone
data/cache wipe + /system and /boot format
installed the stock 2.3.6 rom (no cyanogen or others, they drain too much battery)
installed fotakill.apk (just take it from any custom rom) (OTA notifications are annoying and the apk just disables them)
am enjoying a stock (but rooted) GB
Just to clarify, root is necessary on ICS in order to downgrade, but you can keep unrooted the stock GB rom
I agree with you: ICS sucks (compared to GB). Drains too much battery and doesn't offer any (important) surplus.

[Q] need some help to tell my bootloader and basic root and CWM procedure

Hi all
I recently receive a 2nd i897, it's running fine but it's only a 2.2.1 (rooted and CWM installed already)
To get myself busy, I decide to upgrade it to 2.3
Here is some background from the setting page:
Model number: i9000
firmware version: 2.2.1
baseband version: i9000ugl2
build number: lidroid 1.9.3
And if i switch on my i897 from complete switch off state
I see "first" i9000 symbol, then i897 symbol
Because of this, i am not too sure what bootloader i am currently on.
My plan:
1.To flash this firmware from samfirmware - SGH-I897_I897UCKK4_UC_ATT (To get GB bootloader and clean 2.3.3)
2.To flash one of the GB kernels from http://www.semaphore.gr/downloads/captivate (To root and install CWM)
3. To flash my favorite GB custom rom
I wish to make sure if my plan is correct before going ahead
THX
Joe
It looks like u currently have an i9000 froyo rom and u have the i9000 froyo bootloaders.
I would suggest an upgrade to the GB 2.3.5 i897ucKK4 firmware with the Bootloaders and then flash KK4 Corn Kernel v7.0A to get the CWM Recovery that is included with that kernel (u can flash the .tar version of this kernel through Odin...use the PDA slot). Then flash ur rom of choice through the cwm. There is no need to get Root before u flash a Dev Rom.

It looks like my little plan is align with your reply.
One more question, can i flash semaphore kernel instead of Corn kernel?
Thx
U can...But if it is not a KK4 based kernel then it will not boot ur phone.
If u try to boot up it will more than likely bootloop. U can use the 3 button combo to get into its recovery though. And then flash ur rom from there.
I would say, go with Corn Kernel.

hi guys
things didn't go too well.
30 mins ago, I just flashed UCKK4
from this link (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1357848)
Odin reported no errors, but now i have bootloop, I see at&t bootscreen
then a "3g" flying animation with white background.
Can someone guide me from here?
1. I think i need the proper way to get in recovery again
2. or to boot into download mode
Thx
Joe
don't worries guys
I have it solved
Cool. Glad u got it goin.

Odin Mobile

Hi folks!
I constantly get this following error msg when trying to use Odin Mobile with my Captivate I897.
A compatible device has been detected but with an unexpected partition layout. Mobile ODIN cannot operate. This is a common error on CM and MIUI ROMs on some devices. Any idea how to tackle this? What is the real problem
BTW I am using Captivate I897 and have the pro ver. of Odin Mobile:good: Thanks in adv. for the help

Paranoid Ver. 2.18

Without searching deep into the Mobile Odin thread myself...As i see it, the problem u r running into is that the Mobile Odin does not/will not flash the Pit file and therefore cannot repartition ur phone from the Rom u r running as u stated in ur post.
It appears to me that ur phone must be running a Rom whether Stock or based on Stock firmware in order to work. Because Stock firmware (eclair, froyo or gb) has bml/rfs partition/file system....As opposed to CM, MIUI, ICS, JB, AOSP, and similar which have mtd/yaffs(2) partition/file system.
The only solution then, is to use the pc desktop Odin or Heimdall.

thanks for the FYI mate..so you are saying that since my phone is running Paranoid's Rom it will not be compatible with Mobile Odin. This is what's on my phone right now mate. I would think that the developers might have taken that into account and it may be something else..any thoughts on that!

A quote below, directly from the Dev's thread...
"While in theory Mobile ODIN can repartition and flash EFS and bootloaders, it will cowardly refuse to do so, for your own safety."
It seems that is just the way he built Mobile Odin. So if u r not on Stock firmware or a Dev'd Rom based on a Stock firmware, then u must use the desktop versions of Odin or Heimdall.

[Q] Rogers Infuse back to stock

I've upgraded my Rogers Infuse with CM10 Jellybean and have had many issues with it freezing and not letting me answer incoming calls, etc. and camera app jittering while recording video.
I was told that the android 2.3 is the most stable version for this phone. But when I have had issues getting stock ROM for Rogers Infuse. In this link: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197248 the download links direct to lnx.lu and tries to get me to install iLividSetup.exe which is a virus. The links are basically dead.
I've tried installing other roms just to get back to stock with lots of problems but eventually got ZEUS rom installed. They say that its stable but this rom is either very buggy or I didnt install it properly. The built-in apps have are there but their icons have been erased and have been renamed to com.android. and when I try to launch any of them it says that the app is not installed on the phone. Im talking about necessary apps like play store, etc. So I cant use the phone like this.
I need help with getting my Rogers Infuse back to stock or a very stable install. Thanks in advance for any help I can get on this.
I would suggest odin back to stock or heimball one click explained in many threads in the dev section. I use Aeon rom wich works better then stock for me. But i dont think u will find the 2.3.3 rogers rom anywere . Pm me if u do i want it lol . U will have to go with an att 2.3.6 wich will still be considered stock rom and will work on rogers. I was using att rom with Bell canada
