[Q] extreme soft brick? - Asus Transformer TF700

While performing the wipes needed to install a ROM I accidentally wiped the system, and am left with no backup and no OS installed. Is there any way to fix my problem. I am able to boot into TWRP recovery, but I cannot restore a backup. I have tried downloading a ROM onto an SD card, and installing it to the tablet through recovery, but the SD card doesn't even show up. Please help me!

Is your SD card formatted with FAT32?
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using Tapatalk 2

No, I don't know what that is.

How did you format the card? Go back to your PC, reformat the card and make sure your choose FAT32 as the filesystem, not NTFS (if you're on Windows). Then copy the ROM...
FAT32 is the structure of the filesystem on the card (or any hard disk). Most recovery tools won't be able to mount anything else...

micro sd or full sd on the dock?
i don't think recovery can find the dock sd.

same problem
Faced with the same problem. use micro SD with FAT32. I put the switch on the external SDcard. nothing. After adb ROM copied to the internal memory. at the beginning of installation, a fault error flashing zip. I do not know what to do, only boots TWRP.
Sorry for my bad English.

I'm in the same boat... I can get to TWRP but cannot flash any kind of rom, stock or custom and can no longer get back to me default operating system... help!

People listen up. Take your MICRO sdcard (the little tiny one) and plug into your computer through a usb adaptor or SDcard adaptor. Wait until the card show up on your computer, right click on the card then chose Format, under "file system" drop down, click the arrow and select FAT32, click ok to format. Once done copy all the rom zip file on to your sdcard. Now, Turn off your device, take your MicroSDcard from your computer and plug it back into the tiny little slot on your table, NOT the keyboard dock. Hold down volume down and power button, your device will turn on. As soon as you see the white text display on the screen, release both buttons, now hit the volume upp twice, this will boot you into recovery. Select wipe, then wipe system, wipe internal, format data. Now your device is 100% clean. Go back to twrp HOME, then select install button, tab on external sd card, you should see your rom zip file, if you don't see the zip, there is an icon on the top left called "up a level" tab on that, now you should see your rom zip file, select it and swype to flash. Once done reboot and you have everything back.

Connect your tablet go to TWRP go to Advanced ADB Sideload and open CMD where your ADB is and put adb.exe sideload zipfilewithrom.zip and thats should resolve it..

Seriouly, you think they know how to use ADB?? Is there PC setup to use fastboot or adb? I doubt that! They are trying to figure out what fat32 and how to format the sdcard!!

Instead of criticizing, you could help us out. I'm well aware of the file system used in my microsd card. I can get a zip onto my internal storage, but TWRP and CWM both do not open and cannot flash a zip file.

What errors are you encountering? I personally use CWM 6.0.1.9 but there's only so many errors a sophisticated recovery can have at this point.
Likewise, for formatting the sd card, I use SDFormatter (chosen program of the SD Association for formatting cards) as it automatically formats to FAT32.
If you feel the errors encountered are serious enough, you might want to start reading up on fastboot in the case that the recovery really is that messed up.

I'm having the same issue. Every time I reboot the device I go straight into TWRP recovery. I have my recovery zip on the root of my (fat32 formatted) sd card. Recovery doesn't see anything. I am not able to connect to the device via fastboot. Any help would be appreciated.

How are you trying to get into fastboot? Just want to make sure your process is right. It's really hard to mess up fastboot.
I'm not familiar with TWRP but perhaps you should see about restoring a backup and then reinstalling a recovery. You shouldn't really try installing a recovery from within a recovery.

I've tried holding the power and volume down button and using adb to reboot into fast boot. Both go straight to the broken recovery install.
I'm not able to flash anything from recovery. I can browse the device's file system using adb shell. I've tried pushing zip files over and flashing, and it reboots half way through and when it comes back up the zip isn't in memory.
If I could get the tablet into fastboot I'd be fine from there but nothing I've tried has worked.

I also can't get to the Os to flash a new recovery that way. Basically no matter what I do the device goes into the broken recovery after I reboot.

Since you have adb shell access, what output do you get from "hexdump -C -n 32 /dev/block/mmcblk0p3"?

OK, this does not contain any command that would tell the bootloader to always boot to the recovery. That means that either such bootloader commands are stored somewhere else, or that your Android kernel may be broken. Unfortunately, little is known about the bootloader's secrets, so I can only try poking around in the dark until someone more competent shows up.
Have you already tried to flash a new kernel? Which firmware version or custom ROM and/or kernel is currently installed?

Can't access SD card, halp!

Hi everyone, looking for a little guidance.
Phone: Android G1 (Rogers Canada Dream) running Cyanogen 4.2.15.1, been running fine since 4.2.6.1
Removed SD card while it was on and it rebooted... when it restarted it showed no applications and said the SD card was inaccessible and required a format. After rebooting a few times with no success I bit the bullet and formatted it... all apps are gone except for the ones that are on that image for Cyanogen. I have no market app to download new apps and when I plug it into my PC and mount it I don't see it show up as a drive like it did so I have no way to get the apps back on.
Has anyone had this happen before? Phone still works but I need to get it back to a state where I can get access to the SD and install the market... Any suggestions appreciated!!
There is a thread on the HERO section of Modaco site called "no adb, no sd". I think the 1st post on the last page MIGHT help. There are adb commands you can run to see if the phone has randomly stopped accessing the SD. Worth a shot.
PM me if you have trouble finding the thread n I'll have a look when I'm at my laptop.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I misunderstood I think.
So it is now showing an sd present? Have you tried formatting in a pc?
Tried reboot without the sd in, then insert once fully booted again?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I remove the SD Card, formatted it in my PC put it back in the phone and I can store pics and vids on it and access them but cant see or access it from the PC when in the phone. I also have no file browser so I cant install any apps or even access the market icon is gone).

Hi there! I had posted on the forum with the G1 issue where my SD card seemed to have died.

I have since removed the SD card and reformatted it, I can store pics and vids and replay them so the card is fine. I tried letting it boot up then adding the SD card when booted, that caused it to reboot, same issue...
Not having access to the card, I cant install any apps or browse the SD to install from there... really sucks
I'd be willing to blow it away and restart too and install CyanogenMod-5.0.8 but I need some guidance.

I got your message pal....
Ok,.... So pictures and videos taken with your phone camera DO save to your SD?.... and you CAN access them on your phone OR if you put your SD into your PC/Lappy?... But not when trying to "mount SD"?
Or have I got that completely wrong?.... Did you put pics&vids onto it through your PC, and thats the only access you get to it?

Pics taken DO save to me SD. I Can access them from a PC is I remove the SD and put it in the PC. Not when I plug the phone in via USB then tell it to mount.
I just did a low level format, same issue.
UPDATE: Just tried the Android System Recovery and Toggle USB-MS and it shows on my laptop now! Going to try the recovery backup now.
aha,... so its just a mounting issue, not that the hardware has turned itself off.
Once when using an older ROM (maybe Villain 10?) we had this same issue, not able to mount SD,... going into Settings --> Connect to PC --> and turning off Notify/ask me solved the problem.
I just partitionned it using:
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with, the details should be straight forward)
rm 1
rm 2
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7500
mkpartfs primary ext2 7500 7948
quit
upgrade_fs
reboot recovery
Then put CyanogenMod-5 For Dream/Magic on the SD and renamed it update.zip
I'm in Android System recovery now and just did a nandroid backup.
I should be able to WIPE then FLASH UPDATE IMAGE right?

Yes, if you have the ROM image on the SD Card (FAT32 partition), you can go flash the image.

If your contacts are saved in the phone's memory, then yes. Any settings, apps, configurations that are stored on the phone will all be gone.
A wipe pretty much gives you the factory settings. (As if you just bought the phone) So you'll have to re-signin into your Google Account and let the Contacts Sync, etc..
EDIT: Depending on what you are flashing (flashing and wiping are two different things), you may not even need to wipe.
Hmmm I tried flash update image and got:
E: Cant open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)
When I mount it in system recovery I see the LOST.DIR and update.zip

Try this:
-Confirm the Image-
1) Make sure you have the full image you are going to flash. (Compare MD5 Hashes and/or just redownload the image)
2) Make sure the image you are flashing is the in the ROOT directory of your SDCard. In other words, it shouldn't be in any folder.
-Flash the Image-
1) When in Recovery, choose to flash an image.
2) Depending on what recovery you have, you may have to select/find the Image you want to flash.
3) Flash the image
-Wipe (Depends)-
1) If you are coming from a different ROM base (ie anything -> cyan), you'll want to wipe.
2) After the phone successfully flashes the image, wipe the phone.
Reboot.
Let me know how it goes.
I pulled the new image from: Latest version: 5.0.8-DS - 06/19/2010
Download: http://cyanogen-upda...8-DS-signed.zip
but it says no such file or DIR... weird...
The only partition I can see on my PC to put it on is the main partition...
I just downloaded the file and renamed it update.zip

I just realized the main reason that you posted this topic. From what I am assuming, either:
a) Your SD Card reader is dead
b) The software isn't recognizing the SD Card reader.
Best bet at this point is to setup ADB (ADB For Dummies) and flash the image from your computer. It can get a slight bit complicated, but just slowly go through each step for installing ADB.
Once ADB is set up, you can flash the image from the computer.

The SD card reader in my phone? It has to work if I can read an write to it ( tested photos and videos) and in recovery I was able to make a backup.
If its the software I need to flash it then right? ADB does make me nervous as I only used it once... I just tried using the terminal emulator on the phone to flash a recovery image I had made while back:
cd /sdcard
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-backup.img
and got the message "error writing recovery: Permission denied"

If you can view the pictures that you saved on the SD card from the phone, then both the software and hardware are functioning correctly.
Regarding the permission denied:
1) What happens if you "su - " in terminal?
2) First try one(1) ^ and then try to reinstate the permissions. (In recovery, go to console and type : fix_permissions)
Not sure otherwise.

Can't mount sd card

Hi there I have a problem
My problem is that i've just root'ed my HTC Desire (I think?)
But my Desire won't boot right.. It only boots to recovery mode...
If i try to install an update.zip with clockwork it says can't read sd card
Pretty much anything i do on clockwork it says "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p1 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0) (No such file or directory) E: Can't mount SDCARD:"
I have also tried adb but it says device not found
My computer registres my Desire when i plug it in but it doesn't recognize it..
What shall i do next?
Ps. I am running windows 7 x64
Sorry for any spelling errors i hope you understand and are able to help me
I had a similar problem. Try booting into clockworkmod recovery, connect your phone to your PC and select mount USB (or something like that) from the partitions menu. This should give you access to your SD card on your PC. Next, backup the contents of your SD card and then delete all partitions. I used gParted but i guess you can use disk manager in windows. One deleted, don't format the card or anything, just reboot the phone and hopefully you should boot up OK. Now you can format the SD card from within Android. Before you do all this is might be worth removing your SD card and seeing if you can boot up OK without it.
Thanks for reply
When I choose to "mount usb storage" nothing really happens it is not getting recoqnized
The phone won't boot without sd-card
Do you or anyone else know if you can sync your desire from recovery mode?
One step further
Okay i now got one step furter
My phone can now start up, but it still can't registre sd card
It just says sd-card removed
Any ideas
have you tried the "mount usb" option again? Although nothing appears to happen on the phone, you should be able to access the card from your PC. it worked for me in both Win7 and Ubuntu. Other than that I can't think of anything else apart from trying a different SD card.
I can't choose mount usb storage any more.. I can't get into clockwork
Now, when i press recovery I get into a black screen with at red triangle and i can choose from 3 or 4 things, inluding wipe and apply udate
I've allready tried a diffrent sdcard
Similar problem but extra issues
Searched for hours and been in a live chat a number of times and posted on another forum but can not find specific solution.
I wanted to install this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=789830 HD rom so I partitioned my sdcard (successfully, to ext3 1.5gb, 33mb linux swap, rest fat32) and started wiping via ClockworkMod recovery.
That is when I ran into problems.
Now I can not mount my sdcard - "E:Can't mount /dev/blocl/mmcblk0 (or /dev/block/mmcblk0p1) (invalid argument) Error mounting SDCARD:!"
When I reboot, it just loops.
WinXP will detect my device via adb (when in recovery) but can't see the sdcard.
I had never used fastboot, so I am not sure if I am typing commands correctly.
Htc Desire 2.2 GSM * Uk 3 network * 8gb class2 sdcard * Bravo pvt1 ship S-off Alpharev * Clockwork 2.5.0.7 * HBOOT 0.93.0001 *
Was on Teppic's rom with init.d support http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=773997
Any help would be very much appriciated.
I hope I haven't missed an obvious or relavent thread.
EDIT
Tried sdcard from Nokia6500 but Desire won't mount that either.
When I go into fastboot and plug in my usb, I do get "FASTBOOT USB" come up, so why would cmd "fastboot devices" not detect my phone? In recovery, cmd "adb devices" it does detect it.
I don't mean to be a pest but i doubt any of us can live without our desire's
BUMP
I have the same problem when i make ext etc. for me helps putting card into another phone with android and format it
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
I have no other android device but...
I have managed to get fastboot cmd's to recognise my device.
Just need to figure how to flash my phone but I dont really want to take any backwards steps in terms of flashing a recovery.
Would like to flash my last set-up if it is possible.
Wish me luck lol
EDIT
Sorted....ish
Long short cut short is:
sdcard reader, reformatted to all fat32 with Paragon hard disc manager 8.
copied rom zip to sd.
full wipe with clockwork recovery.
Then inserted sd and installed zip from sdcard.
booted.
smiled again, even though its a practically stock rom.
ok i just waited and it finally booted up normally and went under sdcard and erased all that data this removes the partitions

Official CWM Recovery 5.0.2.7

As Undeads thread has been closed, I needed to start again.
Basically when flashing the new 5.0.2.7 recovery with any method, via Rom Manager or ADB Fastboot the recovery just doesn't work proper.
My sdcard can't mount, hence I can't navigate nor install any roms?
Performing backups & restores don't work for me either.
I've had to roll back to 4.0.0.9, annoying because I want to try out Blues Bulletproof.
Please someone what is the definitve solution to getting the officion CWM recovery to work as I'd expect.
I've even tried a :
fastboot erase system -w
before fastboot flash recovery 'recoveryimage'.img
Rolling back to 4.0.0.9 allows me to do everything as per usual in recovery, but not with 5.0.2.7
I'm really quite baffled with this
1 - Download the recovery via real computer.
2 - Plug in your doubleshot, transfer to sdcard main directory.
3 - Disconnect from computer, use a root file manager (root explorer preferred) to copy the image from /sdcard to /data/local
4 - Open up terminal emulator.
5 - Type:
Code:
su
6 - Then type:
Code:
dd if=/data/local/recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.7-doubleshot.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p21
*Make sure all letters are lowercase. You will have to juggle the hardware/software keyboard to get the first "i" after "dd" to be lowercase. Try typing a few characters past it, then using the trackpad to move the cursor back to it. Keep trying the hardware and software keyboards until it sticks as a lowercase "i"
7 - Let it transfer, then exit terminal emulator.
8 - Reboot into recovery, should be good.
**Note - pay close attention to the file name for the image. What Undeadk9 typed into his guide is wrong, what I typed here is correct.
Post if you have any further issues.
Edit:
"if" stands for "input file".
"of" stands for "output file".
dd
One thing I love about the official clockwork recovery is the ability to mount the sdcard while plugged into the computer, and drag and drop files to and from the sdcard while the doubleshot is in recovery mode.
Good luck, hope to see it working for you soon.
Thanks, but still same issues
Hi Blue,
I'm still getting the same errors dude.
I just tried your method, hence I've now tried to install the new recovery with all 3 methods (adb fastboot, rom mamanger and this dd terminal command.)
They all flash/install correct, and when rebooting into recovery each time it looks fine.
But when I try to navigate to 'sdcard' (install zip from sd card/choose zip from sd card... i get "E: Cant't mount /sdcard/"
When I go to mounts & storage/mount sdcard, again I get "Error mounting /sdcard!"
When I attempt a backup, I get this "Can't mount backup path."
I hope you can decipher my mayhem here...... very weird!
Maybe it's my sdcard - however, it works as perfect on modaco 4.0.0.9, I'm unsure on whats going on here

if you are using an older version of a rom you have to mount system and data.
Try mounting those and then trying to install from an sd.
If I were you I would do a full wipe /formatsystem/data/dalivk/sdcard. Backup the important things on the sd card to the computer and start fresh with an updated rom and a clean sd card.
You could always try swaping your sd card out but i dont think its the problem. The older roms make running the NEW CWM much more difficult than it should be.
I am not sure it appears you are trying to get an older ROM to run with the new CWM.

BUTTTTTTTT when i tried to do a backup of my current virtuous rom i get an error: "can't mount target path"

And when testing the wipe & format options, instead of the traditional Yes or No.... I now have like 10 No options and 1 Yes option.
Something seems bogus, ive reinstalled the recovery twice but same effect.

I'm sure I saw it around here somewhere, hell if I know where off the top of my head. I am pretty sure it involved formatting the sd-card if memory serves right.
I have to go, will be on the road for a bit then tied up with the family of my Lady for a bit, so not sure when I can check back in.
Hopefully pmcqueen happens to see this and posts the missing info that was not updated...
I realize I quoted you from the other thread, so this issue has been hanging for you for a while? We need to figure out how to solve it - wish I could be more focused on your problem at the moment.
Try formatting your sdcard through Clockworkmod.
If you can't try powering off the phone and formatting the card directly in your computer.
It sounds like you have Clockworkmod successfully updated to the 5.0.2.7 version, but now reading the sdcard is the problem.
Can you try a different MicroSD card, do you have another one?
What ROM are you using? Becaause anything that dates before the official ROM.manager release date was unmounted. Basically there was a feature that the new ROM doesn't have. Undeadk9 confimed this in that thread. Everything you need to know is there. They go into full detail as to why it wasn't working. Even decided to open a full wiki about why. Did you even read it?
Basically you have to manually mount. Also in the rom try scrollong down and keep going until it unlocks.

Not sure if you already tried this, but if you haven't, try doing:
Get the SD Formatter here and format your sd card (use a card reader if necessary).
Use quick format, but make sure "Format Size Adjustment" was off (all available under options...)
Two reminders:
1. The recommended filesystem for an android SD Card is FAT32
2. Remember to back up whatever you have in the SD card so you can put them back in once you're done formatting
Thanks for all the input guys.
Will try an sd format etc and report back soon.
Cheers

I can almost guarantee you formatting the sd will fix your problems with sd mounting in 5.0.2.7
You won't be able to do it via cwm recovery (it's not able to even recognize the sd, that's why you're having mounting issues) but if you put the card into an sd reader and format it for a normal fat32 partition I bet that fixes it.
So I just thought I'd chime in here...
I recently updated from Modaco to CWM and had this sd card issue however, I have like 10 different sd cards and the first thing I did was put the ROM I was trying to install on a sd card with nothing on it and BAM it worked. I'm going to try and put my 16gig back in after everything settles in the rom and I'll update with the results. tomorrow.
Hi guys,
similar issue here
I can't make a backup or restore, I can't install somethink because I always get "Can't mount sdcard"
any idea?
thanks
Oh damn I completly forgot to post my results.
Sd card needed a reformat, then the new recovery was able to mount sd etc.
Thanks to everyones 2cents in this thread, helped me out.
Enjoy
I've tried to format but without result
Did you try SD Formatter using a PC? I was able to resurrect a dead 16gb microSD using that method.

Boot into recovery 5.0.2.7 and make backup. All good.

[GUIDE] How to run SD version of CM7.1 on HTC Desire S (fried emmc chips too).

I designed this version of the system for my broken phone with fried emmc chip. This disk can be used in the working devices as "Recovery Disk"/"Emergency Disk" for testing purposes or other google's account))
1. Get “adb” and “fastboot” from Android SDK tool.
2. Prepare a blank memory card (Micro SD 4GB and more) for recording an image of the system.
3. Download the system image to a memory card sdcard_4g.rar.
4. Decompress/unrar archive, and u get the image of the SD card sdcard_4g.img.
5. Write image to your sdcard with:
Linux:
Code:
dd if=/path_to/sdcard_4g.img of=/dev/sdX
”, where X your device.Windows:
Write image with Image writer for Windows to Micro SD cardExperts can make own sized partitions with this structure:
Code:
sdb1 – fat32 (rest size) the external storage
sdb2 – extendet partition
sdb5 – ext2 – 4MB
sdb6 – ext2 – 4MB
sdb7 – ext4 – 585MB /system
sdb8 – ext4 – 315MB /cache
sdb9 – ext4 – 28MB /devlog
sdb10 – ext4 – about 1-1.2GB /userdata
then decompress and copy system.7z:
Code:
dd if=/path_to/system.img of=/dev/scX7
, where X your device.6. Dowload bootloader's image “bootsd.img”.
7. Boot your phone to “BOOTLOADER” (VolDown+Pwr → Pwr).
8. Connect device to computer via USB cable.
9. Boot your device:
Command line
Code:
fastboot boot /path_to/bootsd.img
Wait 3-5 minutes (The 1st boot can take some time, depend on speed of memory card).
If all goes well, you get the device working without using the phone's internal memory!!!
Good Luck!!!
PS: Be careful the image of the memory card will erase all existing information on it! Select the correct device before recording an image on the memory card. The author assumes no responsibility for the integrity of your data and equipment damage!
If you think the author's helpful, buy him a beer!
Booting from "Recovery":
To launch an android from the "Recovery", copy the "update.zip" to your memory card at root directory of the fat32 partition. In the "RECOVERY" select "apply update from sd card" and confirm "install" by selecting "Yes - Install ...". Installing update.zip only starts the Android system from the SD card. Now you can run the system without a PC.
This method is suitable to run in an emergency, if discharged or the phone needs a restart. He uses the chroot method and kernel in your RecoveryMod, so there may be some limitations of the functional (ex. WiFi module bcm4329.ko - wifi dont work after boot from Recovery).
Downloading and testing...
Will give you feed back as soon as i boot
Now I'm working on others ROMs based on CM7.2 and ICS... Waiting for your replay

It works!
Everything is working ok! How about a mini-guide on how to build customized sd-images?
Mini howto)
U can modify the contents of the memory card directly through the card reader. U need a PC with Linux only, because Android - a Linux + virtual machine Dalvik. Now you do not need "RECOVERY" to clear/wipe the cache or user data. Simply delete unnecessary or format /cache or /date partitions, without fear of damaging the data on your phone, you can always restore from an image memory card, or take another card.
Change "/system" partition to add/remove programs, sounds, pictures and more right on the disk.
PS: Howto about progamming, compiling kernel or android... It's not a trivial task, it can be described in several books. And the principles have been repeatedly described in the Internet. I may write later. Still a lot of things I can do.

Hah if only HTC could come up with a solution such as this! +1
Mostly Devices can boot by this way, if they have MicroSD or USB port. This is "Linux way".

[Q] can you recover photos and vids after conducting a format on you asus tf700t?

I want to find an way on how to turn my asus tf700t into a storage mass usb so that i can run a recovery data software on my laptop and hope to recover photos and videos that i accidentally lost after I did a factory reset and wiped all my info!!!
Can you guys let me know if there is another way?
If your device is rooted and you have a microSD or SD card that is at least as big as the device's internal storage, you can make a full image of the data partition and try running your data recovery software on that image. The partition to copy is /dev/block/mmcblk0p8.
I do have root access and the sd card to conduct such procedure! now I need to figure out how to get to that particular file partition and copy it into my sd card.
/dev/block/mmcblk0p8.

Run this in adb shell:
Code:
su (if you are not already root)
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p8 of=/Removable/MicroSD/data.ext4 bs=32k
For the full size SD card in the dock, adjust the output path appropriately. It will take a while, as it needs to copy almost 32 or 64 GB.
If the image is only 4 GB, that's because of a limitation in your dd commmand and you need to find a version with large file support. Of course you should not install any apps as this reduces your chance for data recovery.
Thank you for your time.! I will let you know what happens. if it works, it can help those who are in the same shoes. as of today, I havent really found an answer. Although I am not an expert on using adb shell. I see I need the SDK android install in my laptop to run a cmd and then the adb shell.
once I run the code you mentioned above. how do i manage to copy/ mirror that file into my sd card? any codes I need to know? sorry

Your screenshot does not show what you typed. When you run "adb shell", you should get a prompt from your TF700 where you can run the su and dd commands (type Ctrl+D or "exit" and Enter to exit).

That does not look as if you have root on your tablet. Here's what it looks like when I start an adb shell on mine:
Code:
C:\android-sdk\sdk\platform-tools>adb devices
List of devices attached
C9OKAS062039 device
C:\android-sdk\sdk\platform-tools>adb shell
[email protected]:/ #
Here is where you would run the dd command.
What do you get if you type:
adb shell - then hit <enter>
su <enter>

I assume you have the microSD card in a microSD to SD adapter, so you have to treat it as a full size SD card - change MicroSD to SD in the dd command line.

No - as I wrote this is a limitation of the dd implementation. I think Busybox comes with a better dd, but you'd need to push it via adb to a temporary filesystem to avoid overwriting anything in /data. Try playing with the truncated image you have now - if you can recover any files from it, it's worth trying to make a complete image.

I have no experience with any data recovery tools. Try googling "recover formatted ext4" or so. Note that the software must be able to work with an image file, not only a raw partition.
Free and open source recovery software that I can recomend. http://www.cgsecurity.org/
after running a recovery data soft on that external sd card where i copy the image of that 4 gb (partition) i wasnt able to recover the data i was looking for!!!! any ideas how to do step by step pushing that partition to a temp file system via adb

You have to run the recovery software on the image file, not on the card. If you can recover *any* files from the image, it makes sense to try the next steps with a complete image.
