Hands On Review: Acer Tempo X960

(Mods, if this is seen as advertising or spam, please accept my apologies and remove the thread. It's not really though, promise! I just thought people might be interested in my review of a new PPC not made by HTC )

Hi all, welcome to this, my hands on review of the new Acer Tempo X960 Smart Device! I've been fortunate enough to be given a review sample of this latest device from Acer, one of their first since their purchase of ETEN corp, and I can tell you, the Acer styling is getting right in there.
First off all, lets take a look as some pics of this gorgeous device.

As you can see, a sexy looking device that's slim, light and extremely comfortable in the hand and has no irritating bevel around the edge of the screen to get in the way of using it.

A very well specified device that places it squarely in the upper bracket of modern Pocket PC devices, the Tempo X960 sports a highly capable processor with integral 3D capabilities and a custom shell application from Acer to simplify your daily use. Let's take a closer look at it, shall we?

Ergonomic Design
The Tempo X960 sports Acers new styling of a slick black casing with a glossy transflective touch screen flush with the casing. It's constructed of a sturdy plastic with a chromium plated rim and a rubberised back to prevent slipping on things like car dashboards and feels extremely comfortable and light in the hand.
The screen is far enough placed up in the device that swiping with your thumb is very comfortable and reaching the 4 hardware bottons and D-pad on the front is also extremely easy on the hand.
The buttons here are your typical Call and Hang up on either side, the D-Pad in the centre, and also a GPS and Home key. More on those later.
Also located on the front is the VGA front camera, primarily intended for 3G video calls, a light sensor for automatic brightness adjustment, and a raised slit for the ear piece. Hiding either side of this slit are the standard status LED's you expect on all Pocket PC's. Power, WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.
Connectors
Starting with the left side, from top to bottom we have a place to fit a lanyard, a +/- volume rocker, a reset hole and the Record button.
On the bottom there is a single mini-USB connector which is the standard these days for Pocket PC charging and synching. This port also doubles as a headphone connector.
On the right side, from top to bottom, we have the power button, Micro-SD card slot, camera button and the bay for the included telescoping stylus.
All of these buttons and slots are flush with the chromed trim which is nice, though I found the SD card slot a little tricky to remove with my fingernail, Mind you, I have chunky fingers so that's probably at least partly the cause. It's not like we'll be opening this regularly anyway, you'll see why a little later.
On the top edge we have the letters GPS.
Behind these hides the antenna for the highly capable SiRF III GPS chipset built in to this device.
On the back we have the main 3.2 megapixel camera with an LED flash and a micro mirror for those self portraits.
Also here are two small speaker grilles, though there is only one speaker actually in the device. Finally, we battery cover which is easy to remove, yet feels of good sturdy construction. This hides the 1530mAh battery and the SIM slot.
Right, that's the hardware covered, so let's switch this puppy on, shall we?
Software
Right, first of all, let's get one thing straight, Acer like black. If there's one thing you're going to see a lot of in Acer's phones, it's black. From the slick outer casing, to the software on the device. Lots and lots of black. I happen to like black, so this suits me right down to the ground.
So... After that admittedly dull boot logo, you are then presented with the regular green Windows Mobile 6.1 startup screen. This hangs around for a short while, before you're presented with this:
This is Acer's all new singing and dancing Acer Shell 2.0. Don't ask me where 1.0 went, I've never seen it and I have no idea if it exists. Who cares anyway? We now have Acer Shell 2.0, and I happen to quite like it.
Anyway, it basically simulates an actual desktop, complete with window showing you the weather outside (by the way, this bit is animated! If it's raining, you'll get rain on your window ), and from what I can tell, appears to be flash based. You can move objects around on the desk, you have three "panes" to help you do this, and on pane 3 there's even a shelf to put stuff too. You can also take objects off the desk if you should wish.

BTW, if you're wondering why these pics are different to the bigger one above, it's because some shots are promo shots from Acer, and some are from the device in my hand. These ones are from my device.
Tapping on any of these objects will open them up to custom applets such as contacts, email, weather forecasts, quick launch, bookmarks, and a rather nifty music player.
As well as the Acer Shell, there are also some other programs preinstalled, these include Google Maps, the new Internet Explorer 6 Mobile (which I have to say, is a massive improvement over PIE and even handles YouTube straight out of the box).
There is also the standard ETEN suit of applications, now rebadged to Acer, that many are used to on the previous Glofiish range of phones such as the GPS Viewer, Application Recovery, Backup, Memory Optimization, Task Manager, Profiles and so on, as well as the usual Windows Mobile stuff such as Office Mobile, MSN Messenger, Live Search.
Two new things of note. We now have a Notification Manager, which can notify you of new updates, and even download for Over The Air updating. Very useful, though I'd be careful of your data charges there. Also, we have what is quite possibly THE most important addition to Windows Mobile ever, and I thank Acer from the bottom of my heart for adding it; card reader mode.
Yes, that's right! When you connect to your PC, you will now be asked if you want to go in to one of three modes:
* Activesync
* Card Reader
* Internet Sharing
The middle one is the important one. Card Reader. When in this mode, the SD card in your device will appear as a normal drive on your PC, and you can transfer files at FULL USB 2 transfer speeds! No more being limited by the horrible speed restrictions of ActiveSync! Finally, you can stop carrying that little card reader with you... Thank you SO MUCH, Acer!

In Use
Right, so... I've had this device in my hands for a couple of weeks now, and I've been using it as my daily phone since it arrived and I have to say, this is by far my most favourite Pocket PC to date.
It's comfy in my hand, it's light, it hardly makes an impression in my shirt pocket. It has a clear VGA screen and thanks to the 533mhz Samsung processor, it's pretty snappy to respond, lagging a little only when some memory pig of an application decided it was going to bully the rest of the device, and THAT only happened when I was randomly installing all sorts of stuff on it.
Typing on it suffers from the same problem ALL touch screen devices suffer from; that of having to use a software keyboard. The standard Microsoft one is the usual fair, needing the stylus to type, but Acer have given us a much easier to use "Easy Keyboard", not too dissimilar to Apple's one on the iPhone, and this one is easy enough to use with the finger.
The audio quality is excellent, both in normal and speakerphone modes, as well as video calls, and whilst it uses a USB connector for audio headsets, the ones it comes with are of good quality and are comfortable to wear.
TomTom 6 & 7 both work a charm on it with GPS fix being picked up in 15-20 seconds from cold in an open area.
Battery life I found to be pretty impressive too, with me going 3 days on average between charges. Not bad considering all the hardware packed into this neat little device, all demanding their share of the 1530mAh battery.
Overall Impression
I've used a lot of Pocket PC devices in my time, so I think I can honestly say that I'm not that easily impressed, but Acer have managed to impress me with the Tempo X960. Sure, it's not perfect, show me a device which IS, but it's very very GOOD at what it does.
For me, I think it's biggest plus points are its size and speed, coupled with comfort of use and quality of the audio. All the rest of the stuff is just bling on the core of what is a very well constructed phone.
I think I can sum up my overall feelings about the Tempo X960 thusly... If Acer want this review unit back, they're going to have to fight me for it! Or... they could just send me an invoice.

Looks like a nice phone.
unfortunately a 2.8 touchscreen and no HW keyboard doesn't quite work for me.
If you have small hands, or don't need to use it for email it seems like a good option.

Great review. Could you be kind enough to dump the rom so we could ectract the acer software. That shell sounds like a joy to use.

Thanks for the review. I am more taken with the M900. If you can get one from Acer can you review that for us? I know it is much bigger but I like its feature set better.
I saw a Russian preview of the M900 which seems to claim the the Qualcomm procs are faster than the Samsung one...I always thought it was the other way round!! Do you have any feelings about that from your review x960, and maybe you can run some benchmarks, even though the stats are often different from real life usage. Finally, do videos run smoothly on it?

All devices that are coming out are all either lacking a keyboard, or if they have one, it's just a reshelve version of the first one like the HTC Touch PRO 2.

This 2.8" screen is just too small now a days...an Acer with a bigger 3.5 or more screen could be nice for you!

Funny you should mention that. I have an M900 in my hands too and am writing a review of it. Will take a little while tho.
As for speed, I've never used a HTC Diamond so can't compare them, but these devices are WAY faster than my Kaiser. I'll be happy to benchmark them for you though.. Which benchmark program would you suggest?
Video run flawlessly, without having to recode them to lower resolutions, but like with all devices, it depends very much on the bitrate they're encoded at. For example, I've tried watching Cars and High School Musical 1 on both phones in CorePlayer. Cars played perfectly, HSM was a tiny bit jerky. Both were DiVX files at 720x480 resolution, but HSM was encoded at a much higher bitrate than cars. Don't have the files on the phone atm to say exactly what the bitrate was though.

I'm more referring to their PC ventures, worse stuff ever made.
Hopefully they have a better team for their mobile division.

Hi, Im very interested in one of these sunno phones, there are 3 models, 1 of them is a cheap copy that I wont buy. The other ones are originals from sunno factory, witch one would you choose? please let me know why

Hi Mhz250,
I've been delivered the model you describe as "The Great One", i.e. with 1GHz processor (at least, that's what it reports) and NOT dual boot.
I can't tell you which one to buy as I'm not familiar with the others, but below are some of my impressions. As a disclaimer, the model I'd ordered was meant to be the dual boot one, so I'm a bit disgruntled, and also this is my first smart phone, so I don't have anything to compare it to with regards performance. However I do have an Ipod touch so I'm familiar with capacitive screens.
Build Quality:
The body feels reasonably solid. There's a bit of a plastic squeek when you squeeze if from the sides but otherwise there's a nice weight to it. The battery cover is metal and again feels solid.
The buttons below the screen and the two volume buttons on the side feel robust, but the cover for the memory card slot is a loose friction fit, and the small power button feels like it might eventually fall out.
Screen quality:
Brightness:
It doesn't seem as bright as my Ipod touch, even with the lightness up full. I've not tried to use it outdoors on a sunny day (I'm avoiding using it until I've my support query on sorting the dual-os settled) but for indoor use it has been fine.
Touch:
I'm using a screen protector that I ordered with the phone, which might have an effect on the responsiveness. It is a resistive screen rather than capacitive: sometimes a light touch is sufficient to get a response, other times you've got to press firmly. I'd characterise the difference like this:
- with a capacitive screen you can lightly "swoosh" with the pad of a finger to scroll
- with the S880, I find I either have to drag with the pad of my finger to scroll, or else use the tip of my finger/nail.
- in general, I find I've to re-enter my taps etc to get a response some of the time, other times it works fine.
- also bear in mind that you will not have multi-touch (pinch-to-zoom), which makes browsing less convenient.
OS:
In my opinion Windows mobile 6.5 is not very nice to use without a stylus: the settings menus and the keyboard are rather small and, although not impossible to use with the tip of your finger, it's still quite easy to select the wrong item. Note that the S880 doesn't come with one of those built-in stylus slots (or even a stylus). Installing FingerKeyboard helps with the keyboard issue, but doesn't help with the small menus.
The lack of an "alt-tab" built in to the OS to switch between running apps is a pain. Perhaps due to my unfamiliarity with the OS, I keep finding myself back at the home screen and have to re-navigate to the application (sometimes via task manager).
I downloaded a trial of SPB Mobile shell and that helps to make the screen feel more responsive. That's all very well while you're in the SPB shell (navigation) but when you finally arrive at the app, you're back in the Win6.5 world . It also adds an extra $30 to the factor into the cost, but if I cannot get the dual-os issue resolved, I'd personally go for this (and, before anyone asks, no, I'm not affiliated with SPB)
So, although this shouldn't be a review of the OS, in terms of selecting which S880 model to go for, all else being equal I'd lean towards the dual boot in order to be able to use Android. (I'm sure there are threads arguing over which OS is better, I don't mean to kick of any such debate here).
Conclusions
This is an admittedly selective review: for me, the two dominant factors are the resistive screen and the Windows interface, neither of which I particularly like, and I don't think they compliment each other.

The camera has a popup controls dialog with the following settings
- Resolution: L, 1M, 2M, 3M
- White Balance: Auto, night, daylight, {some bizarre symbol that might mean fluorescent light}, incandescent light (a traditional lightbulb)
- EV: +/- 2 stops
- Location for storage;
- Wide-screen review
- Auto-timer
There's also a quick route to view stored pictures and a menu: the menu has
- Special Effect ( a bunch like b&w, sepia, etc)
- Snap sound
- Flash
- Iamge[sic] Quality : High Low Normal
- About: Camera V1.0
I took just a couple of shots outside at twilight and at night. Twilight ones appeared on the screen pretty close to what I was seeing. Not entirely sure what you were looking for with the night shots: they look dark, naturally! I've not viewed them on a pc yet (so no opinion on the quality) but on the phone's screen you can make out street lights etc. in the night shots

If I'm not mistaken, apps don't run seem to concurrently in Windows Mobile: i.e. although in RAM, they remain in a sleep mode until you switch to them. This seems to be backed up by the view in task manager: CPU usage remains 0% for "running" apps. So running other apps shouldn't really affect performance other than by hogging RAM.
I've no 3D games (and anyway, as this is my first smart phone, I'd have nothing to compare with). As an aside, the phone has Teeter installed (one of those marble-around-a-maze) which, although it doesn't show off the graphics or processing, it does show off the gravity sensor and it works really well.
I did a quick scan of xda-developers for benchmarking and came across SPB Benchmark (again, I'm not affiliated with SPB!). I'll give that a run and let you know. I don't know if there are other benchmark tests worth looking at?

You can look at the technical characteristics of Sunno S880. This smartphone model uses Marvell PXA 310 806 MHz processor but the actual CPU frequency is 624 MHz. The CPU is fast and works well with almost all applications. It can run on Windows Mobile and Android, but for now there is not a complete ROM for Android. The camera is type CMOS sensor, 1944x2592 pixels, 5MP and its quality is not different from the other Sunno Smartphone models. It depends on the environmental light, however, there are different built-in filters that improve the image quality.

thanks for that link: the model I has some differences to the one listed:
-cosmetically, the back plate looks distinctly different, while there's a slight difference on the front.
- the device information (as reported by the device itself) states
CPU Model: Marvell PXA310
CPU Speed: 1GHz
So either this is a slightly different model to the one at the link, or the information can be/is faked in WinMob Settings/Device Info.
Could you explain a bit more "for now there is not a complete ROM for Android" - I have a complaint in with my seller because the phone doesn't support Android. Is a ROM due soon, and how could I get it?

the information on the website is actual. We have added a link to the Marvell PXA310 CPU specifications. It runs well up to 624 MHz, so bear in mind that Windows may not show the right information because the equipment information is recorded by the software developer. This CPU generally supports the Android core, but there isn't yet a stable version for it.

It seems we need a benchmark of your phone itburns.
infobg, I've been researching a LOT in the web and there are actually 3 models of this phone. One of them seem to be a fake, another seem to be a old model and the other is the actual model(the one with 806Mhz CPU running at 624mhz)
It seems that the first model was the one with 1Ghz processor.

Sunno S880 Benchmark
Description
The SPB Benchmark software runs a series of separate tests under the following headings:
- Main
- Sorage Cards
- Battery
- Active Sync
Setup:
I skipped the battery test: it involves things like brining it to full power, then allowing it to run out of power, then repeating under different conditions; hadn’t got the patience.
General: - After initiating the test, I didn’t interact with the phone until the tests had run to completion.
- Connections all off: phone, Bluetooth, wifi
- Screen “lightness” set half-way and timeout for dimming set to 15 seconds.
Specific test setup- Main, File – performed with the phone powered by the mains (but with the battery also at 100% power.)
- Active Sync – performed with the phone connected to a HP laptop.
Results:
The Spb Benchmark “visualise results” didn’t work when the combined tests {Main, Storage Card, Active Sync} were in the results file, so I split out the storage card results and uploaded {Main, Active Sync}: it is possible that this could affect some of the cumulative results? Anyway I’ve copied the relevant part of the xml file below for the storage card test.
The comparand (iPaq 3650) has a 206 MHz Intel StrongARM SA-1110 32-bit RISC Processor (source ipaqrepair.co.uk)
- The “Pocket Word” and “Internet Explorer” tests did do something, I could see stuff pop up on the screen (which came alive during the test), so it is possible that the test just failed to grab the results. IT IS POSSIBLE (PROBABLE?) that the cumulative Spb Benchmark index is incomplete or unreliable, given the few failures?
- Note: for some values it would look like a low value is good (File system index?), but the hyperlinks on the spb site to explain the benchmarks seem to be broken, so I cannot be sure.

Sunno S880 Benchmark - Second test
CORRECTION: In my first posting, I said that the S880 doesn't have a built-in stylus, but I have since found it! It is very neatly hidden in the bottom right of the phone.
Ok, I've now run SKTools' benchmark. There seems to be quite a variation in the results on different runs of the tests, so this is only a snapshot and may not indicate the best or worst performance of the S880. The SKTools results usefully provide results from other phones: in the results below, I've also given results for the Touch Diamond (528MHz), Samsung Omnia II (800MHz) and HDC Touch HD2 (1GHz). Mhz250, I took a look at the video on china mobile com and the form factor of the model matches my own.
Setup as before:
- phone plugged into mains
- connections off (bluetooth, phone, wifi)
- Screen lightness mid-way, with a timeout of 15 seconds

Sunno S880 Conclusions: Steer clear!
So, up to now I've been recording first impressions and also benchmarks. Now that I've had some time to use the Sunno S880 as a phone, it is worth adding: it's rubbish.
a) call quality is very poor - those calling me hear an echo of themselves and also complain that it's very hard to make out what I'm saying. So if you don't want to be continually be repeating yourself, avoid.
b) the phone continually loses signal, often mid call. And I'm not talking about areas of "poor reception", this happens in our capital city.
Additionally: battery life is very short, I was getting a drop of about 50% overnight with light usage (about two-three calls, 5 mins playing mah jong).
In the end, I had to cut my losses and buy the cheapest big-brand phone that I could live with, so I got a Samsung Tocco Lite. Although I'm no fan of its software interface, the call quality on the Tocco is crystal clear and there's none of the loss of signal that I was experiencing with the S880.
So I'd have to conclude: avoid the Sunno S880.

Hi everybody
I would like to give you my feed back about the Sunno S880pro.
First I bought this mobile phone to the website Mobino1, the shipping was fast.
1-My first surprise was that the package was a bulk ,not in a nice packet (like the samsung phone).
2-The phone in itself is nice , the screen also.
3-The problems comes when I wanted to use the phone.
The wireless, bluethoot and phone network are not stabile, I have always disconnections. An When a use the wireless, bluethoot the Battery discharges very quickly.
The Big Problem is that I cannot make a call and send SMS With the Mobile phone company "BASE" (in Belgium). So with friends we tested with anothers Mobile phone Company " Mobistar" & "Proximus",In this case the calling work well.
So I decided to change my subscription to Mobistar.
To my big surprise after two days the disconnection problems come back again.
I still have the problem actually.
I try in vain to find another ROM for this phone ,but I have not found.
If someone has the program, I m interested to have.

After months of advertising, the ICOO ICOU Fatty2 is now finally on sale. The entry-level price of the tablet (Wi-Fi only) is RMB 899 (USD 149), which is much higher than competitions like the Yuandao mini one (USD 119) and CHUWI V88s (USD 119), both of which have the same 7.9 inch IPS display. But the Fatty2 is pricier for a reason, the 5500mAh battery it features gives the slate an extraordinary 10-12 hours run time, and the Wi-Fi reception is the best I’ve experienced on a Chinese tablet!

First Impressions​
The one thing that sticks out most about the Fatty2 is how much it looks like an iPad mini. And I'm not talking about the interface and apps, but the weight and size of the tablet, which is so thin and weighs so little you'd almost think you were browsing the web on a piece of paper.
The ICOU Fatty2 may not have the Retina Display and 2GB of DDR3 RAM of many 9.7 inch Chinese tablet, but it still looks beautiful and is extremely responsive. This shouldn't come as a surprise. Most apps are designed to run on standard resolution, only a few apps actually support the latest superior graphics of the retina display.
The 7.9-inch ICOU Fatty2 is only slightly larger than many 7 inchers, thanks to the narrow screen bezel it uses. When I pick it up with one hand, it seems just right. While many of the 8 inch tablets beg to be held with both hands, it feels natural to hold the Fatty in one hand, even for a long period of time.
Retail Package
It seems ICOO determined to stick to this colorful packaging approach for its tablet products this year. Fatty2 is wrapped up in a paperback box which has 7 colors to it. I personally prefer more simplistic style taken by Samsung and many other internationally well-known manufactures, but I can’t say that this packaging isn’t attractive.
Again, ICOO has carried on its wonderful tradition with a slew of buddle fittings. You will find a 5V-2A charger, a USB data cable, an OTG cable and a pair of SONY earphones along with the fatty2.
Design and Build
The front of the tablet is dominated by a 7.9 inch IPS display, with very small bezel around it. At 198*134mm, it is even smaller than the popular Apple iPad mini (200 x 134.7mm), and only slightly bigger than the Nexus 7 (198.5 x 120mm) and Kindle Fire HD (196.7 x 133), both of which use a much smaller 7-inch display.
As for thickness, the ICOO ICOU Fatty2 is easily the slimmest tablet I have ever seen, at 7mm it is even thinner than the ultra-slim iPad mini (7.2mm) and Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 (7.9mm). Although Yuandao has claimed the their so-called 6.8mm mini one is the thinnest tablet on earth, it is later proved to be just another lie, amongst many lies told by this unprincipled tablet maker.
All the connectors are hosted on the bottom edge. From left to right are a mini HDMI port, a micro USB port, a 2.5mm DC port, a 3.5mm audio jack, a tiny microphone pinhole and a MicroSD card slot which supports cards up to 32GB.
Again, ICOO has taken a simplistic approach with the hardware keys, only a power/standby key and a volume rocker will be found on the transition area between the right edge and the back. Personally, I dislike the arrangement that the power button is actually below the volume rockers. Moreover, I am really disappointed that, in portrait mode, the lower part of the volume rocker is actually volume +. I know this may be due to the fact that we more often use the tablet in vertical mode, but if a tablet is designed to be like an iPad, it should be arranged like an iPad.
The back of the slate is partially plastic, partially aluminum. This is, contrary to the button layout, a brilliant arrangement. The plastic can guarantee solid Wi-Fi reception, and the use of hairline metal can avoid the feel of cheapness. A 5MP auto-focus front facing camera sits comfortably on the upper left corner, and the only speaker gate is on the lower left corner.
Also, you can choose to purchase a magnetic protection cover or a Bluetooth keyboard for your Fatty2, both of which are at relatively low price (cover: $7, Keyboard: $17). When you open the cover, the Fatty2 magically wakes up. And while you close it, the Fatty2 automatically goes to sleep. I have only seen this useful function on the iPad series and some Windows tablet before. Its presence here on a low-price Chinese tablet is pretty surprising. The Bluetooth keyboard feels even more solid than the tablet itself, at just 7.7mm thick it can turn your Fatty2 into a super-slim ultra laptop in just a second!
Screen

The Fatty2 sports exactly the same display used on the iPad mini. The IPS display technology together with the 7.9” XGA display delivers seamlessly brilliant colors that redefines the best visual experience a tablet can offer.
The ultra slim 7.9” XGA display offers brilliant contrast ratio, the best color gamut and response time, making text or image-viewing extraordinarily crispy and vivid regardless the viewing angle.

There is nothing special about the resolution and some 7" tablets like the Nexus7 and the Kindle Fire HD even push the pixel density above 200 ppi. If you did the math already, you'd know the Fatty2 is far behind at 163 ppi. The Retina display of the new iPad is the standard-setter in tablets at 264 ppi, and you will always keep in mind the existence of the Google Nexus 10, which holds the tablet record of 300ppi. Hacing said that, the Fatty2’s display is still vivid enough for most users, packing an XGA resolution in such a small screen definitely brings much better visual experience than most of the computers.
Even when you put the Fatty2 next to the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, which features a more expensive, more vibrant Super AMOLED Plus display, it still won’t be outshined. In fact, the IPS display the Fatty2 sports is likely to be more accepted by the majority of users as its color expression is more close to real.
Performance
The Fatty2 is powered by the 1.6GHZ quad core RK3188 Chipset, along with 1GB DDR3 RAM, which put up some incredible benchmark scores.
The 17,472 overall Antutu benchmark score handily beat the 16,734 notched by the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0, and smashed scores achieved by the Allwinner A31 powered Onda V818 mini and Actions ATM7029 powered Ainol NOVO8 Dream.
It’s more or less the same story on the Quadrant Advanced. Again, the RK3188 powered Fatty2 scored higher points than the other 3 devices.
In the graphics-focused Nenamark2 test, the Fatty2 scored 55.6 FPS, higher than the category average. But the Allwinner A31 powered Onda V818 mini scored a much more impressive 58.9 FPS, thanks to its impeccable PowerVR SGX544MP2 GPU.
The An3D Bench XL also centers on the 3D capability of the device. But the Fatty2 turned the tide around this time, notching an incredible 37,018, blowing the other 8 inch competitions out of the water.
Vellamo is by far my favorite Benchmark application, the scores of certain device are very consistent, regardless of the version of the software. Although the Fatty2 was beaten by the more all-optimized Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 in both HTML5 and Metal test, it still smashed the other two quad-core slates.
CF-bench also witnessed the Fatty2’s capability, the 15888 final score easily outshined its competitions.
Fortunately, the Fatty2’s real world performance cohere with its benchmark scores, at XGA resolution, it is truly the fastest tablet I have ever used, and I want to continue using it until the Quad Core A15 era’s here.
The stock web browser works fine enough, but I am more of a fan of Dolphin HD and Chrome. Even with more than a dozen of webpages opened in different tabs, the Fatty2 remained super responsive with no delay and lag at all. Most apps I have used on this device work perfectly, but with this resolution you will find a few of the apps specifically made for 16:10 screens appeared somewhat distorted on the Fatty2’s display, but I don't mind that as the screen and colors are incredibly amazing, and until you hold this in your hand it’s hard to put in writing just how beautiful it really is.
With 1GB of DDR3 RAM, the Fatty2 isn’t as strong as the PIPO M9 in multi-tasking, with lots of big applications running at the same time the smoothness could be crippled. By big applications I am not talking about the chatting apps such as Skype and ICQ, or even games like the “Angry Bird” and “Temple Run”, I am talking about real big apps such as “IRON MAN 3” and some Office applications. So, for anyone who’s not a psycho tester like myself, the Fatty2’s RAM is enough!
Although the Fatty2 isn't exactly the most incredible multi-tasker, it really shines in the game department. In both portrait and landscape modes, the tablet is easy to hold and control, making it a snap to play games where you need both thumbs on the screen. One-handed tapping and swiping is easy as well, thanks to the form factor of the unit. While you can appreciate the size of a 10-inch tablet for gaming, the 7.9 feels very good in your hands. Also, it had no issues with any of the games I opened up on it, ranging from “Temple Run 2” to “Fruit Ninja: Puss in Boots” to “Virtua Tennis” to that lone pre-loaded level of “Dead Space”. I even loaded the insanely graphic-intense “Need for Speed: the Most Wanted”, and quickly became obsessed with the fast racing and crushing. Despite the fact that these games can be processor intensive, particularly on a tablet, I had no issues whatsoever.
Movies and Videos play very well with the stock video player and there are several on the market you can use if you find videos that do not work on the stock player. In my actual test, I have no problem playing any local video file in my mobile disk. Even with a few 1080P videos which cannot be played through hard-decision decoding, you can use soft decode them smoothly, thanks to the extremely powerful RK3188 quad core chipset.
Audio​
Sound-wise, while the HD videos really show off what this tablet is capable of, you'll want some headphones or an external sound solution. I am not saying the Fatty2’s speakers are bad, in fact, it is much better than most of the 7-8 inch tablets I have used in the audio department. But the single speaker still doesn't pack nearly as powerful an audio punch to match the visuals. Even at full volume, sounds like a whirring computer fan or a printer will easily drown out anything from the tablet.
Cameras
The cameras mounted on the ICOO Fatty2 aren't anything to write home about. Rear camera photos are decent, especially if you have enough light, and shooting video in 720 HD also can be seen as a bonus.
Of course, 5MP cameras on different Chinese tablets perform pretty much the same, and the Fatty2 isn’t really disappointing, it just cannot produce crisp HD photos that you would expect to go with this fabulous display. It is still worth using the camera on-board, especially because if you've ever seen someone holding up a full-sized iPad to take a photo or shoot video, you know how ridiculous they look. With this sleek 7.9-inch pad, it's much easier to get away with using it as a camera and not looking like you're a protester at a rally.
Connectivity
The Fatty2 is well equipped in terms of connectivity. There is a Micro USB connector for computer connection. There is a microSD card slot as well. The 16GB of internal storage helps too.
The Wi-Fi support includes a/b/g/n versions, with both 2.4GHz and 5GHz band compatibility. Wi-Fi Direct and DLNA support are also available. In my actual test, the Fatty2’s Wi-Fi reception is more than satisfactory, thanks to the M500 Wi-Fi module it features. This type of Wi-Fi Module is more often seen on those high-end smartphones. Also, the addition of Bluetooth is always a good thing, not only can u use it to transmit files without a data cable, u could also connect your tablet to those bluetooth input and audio devices:
Naturally, the Fatty2 supports USB on-the-go, and the adapter is already packaged in the paperback box along with the tablet. You can connect card readers, USB flash drives and other compatible devices to your tablet and access their contents through the file manager. Mice and keyboards are supported as well.
Unlike the iPad or Samsung Galaxy tabs, there is an independent mini HDMI port, all you need to do is to buy a $5 HDMI cable, and you can enjoy your tablet content on a much bigger screen.
Battery Life​
The tablet is powered by a 5500mAh battery which, coupled with the power-efficient 28nm RK3188 SoC., is more than enough to make the Fatty2 one of the best tablets in terms of battery backup. In our battery test the slate achieved a score of 86 hours. This means that if you use the Fatty2 for an hour each of gaming, web browsing, and video playback every day, you will have to recharge it every 86 hours. And the tablet stood 11 hours, 55 minutes of online video streaming (30% of screen brightness, 50% of speaker volume), blowing the Beneve Miracle One’s 10 hour record out of the water:
In local video playback, the ICOU Fatty2 broke the long-held record by Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7, and smashed the other 8-inch Android tablets I’ve tested:
Charging the tablet is relatively fast, with the buddle 5V-2A charger you only have to wait 3 hours for a full charge (0%—100%). Shutdown charging support not only guarantees the efficiency, but also gives the tablet a longer life span.
Verdict
The good:
1. The screen is truly impressive. Although the resolution doesn't match the iPad4 and Nexus10's Retina Display, it is definitely in the same ballpark and provides very crisp images.
2. The slim chassis and narrow bezel design make holding the tablet in one hand no longer that much of an effort.
3. The slew of ports and slots the Fatty2 provides for its users are truly wonderful, you no longer need to buy expensive adapters to enjoy functions such as HDMI or OTG.
4. The Wi-Fi reception of the tablet is amazing, arguably the best I have experienced on a Chinese tablet.
5. The 5500mAh battery paired up with the power-efficient RK3188 SoC. gives the tablet an incredible 10-12 hours’ run time.
The bad:
1. The price is the biggest barrier to fully enjoying the Fatty2. Although compared to the iPad and the bunch of Samsung tablets, it is incredibly cheap already, yet its major competition comes from other Chinese tablet makers: the Yuandao Mini One, the Chuwi V88s and CUBE U35GT are all $30 cheaper than the Fatty2.
2. The Fatty2 ships with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and uses the stock user interface. Although ICOO has promised an upgrade to Android 4.2 and a delicately designed Metro Launcher, and there are already a few beta ROMs out there. However, without a clear date in sight who knows when the official ROM will arrive.
3. With the 7.9 inch display and similar-sized chassis, it is pretty much another iPad mini look-alike, and this can bring you some queerish stares and annoying questions.
Final verdict​
The form and size of the Fatty2 feels perfect for a device you can grab to take with you for a long trip, a meeting, or a trip to the ballpark. It isn't as unwieldy as a 10-inch tablet, but the tradeoff is the screen loses real estate previously devoted to input. As a result, it doesn't feel like a serious business device, even if you paired it up with the Bluetooth keyboard, the lack of capable Office applications is still standing in the way of carrying this Android slate around for tight-scheduled business meetings.
What you will really find in the Fatty2 is a very pretty, functional media device. Android fans should consider this device if it fits their needs, but with other similar options in lower price ranges, you'll want to take a hard look at those needs and decide if it actually works for what you need it to do. For a casual entertainment unit, it works well. Any more than that, and you're going to find the capabilities stretched very thin.
With more Chinese tablets coming to the table every day, most now in quad-core configurations and with equally impressive screen options, the Fatty2 faces quick obsolescence unless it can compete. A price drop and software upgrade would be a big step in the right direction.

Quite impressed. Now want to see if there are any bugs and kinks, strange things etc, which you never know about from a smaller brand and a smaller user base.

The retail price in China is RMB899, which is like 149 USD. But the price may vary in different countries, in relation with the taxations and transportation costs.

I am Chinese, so i nought it on TAOBAO. I guess there are also a lot of online shop for oversea buyers.

With the Power button at the back of the tablet, is it very often that you turn off your screen accidentally?

Does anyone know where can we update the firmware ?
I have seen some info that there is Android 4.2.2 for fatty2 but i can´t find the rom to download
In this link from their site says that fatty 2 has android 4.2.2 ...

I did some google translate on the link you provided and came up with a download for the fatty 2 and the fatty 2 2gb version.
but it seems to me like the only language in the update is simplified chinese... hope it 's not

But one problem still resides. where is the Android 4.2.2 because the firmware version of Fatty 2 and Fatty 2 2G are of Android 4.1.1 ...
Maybe it´s bull**** of them in the english site that the fatty 2 can have Android 4.2.2

Got my fatty yesterday... must say i'm pretty pleased with it. It's fast, wifi s good, comes in english, nice screen and fully charged i used it for 3-4h and still has 65% battery left. There are some chinese apps and market on but you can hide them so they wont bother. Didnt do the firmware update yet but everything seems working well for now

About first impression
My first impression of the device was so good. I really feel that the device materials and quality is distinct that other devices i tested.
There is lots of details that make a difference, from the device design, or the software included, or the customization made on the system, etc.
The first time you boot the device, you get a screen to register an iMuch account. This is not required really, but you can do these steps to gain access for Much services (note: most in chinese). In my tests, i remove my Much account, and i can use the device without problems.

There is a icon called Much Helper, that really is a quick guide to use the device, that is so interesting and helpful (this come in english), and show you in short steps the main features of the device and how to use.

Is really nice get a device like this that manufacturer take care about heir users, and provide ways to get familiar and comfortable with the device like this (and in english, a common language).
Another thing that i get may attention is that this device come with no much bloatware, and the games listed are to download from the google playstore (instead of a separated store with software from a non clear origin)

Most of this games are free, or demo versions.(and i thanks for it, because the system come with no unecessary software pre-installed)

Android have a special mode called Recovery, that is used many times to recover the device if this have problems to run properly, but there exist an alternative Custom Recovery that add a lot of new functionality and tools, and one of the most popular is one called ClockWorkMod Recovery.

One of the most important features of this custom recovery, is the NANDROID generation, a way to generate a full backup of the nand (where the operating system resides) to a directory, and can be used as a recovery point for the device in case of semi-brick, or simply if you want to get a clean firmware on it.
Take note that this backup (nandroid) is a image of the NAND, this means, there will be stored all your configs, users, passwords, accounts, etc. Is a good idea to get a clean firmware insatlled on the device, and install and configure all your base programs (file admins, cloud services, google account, etc) and then get a nandroid for your personal use. When you get back to this image/backup, you will get a clean and configured system, saving lot of time on basic configurations and installing basic software.
The installation of CWM on this device is easy. For this, i follow the next thread on XDA forum:
How to install CWM on most rooted mtk devices
This method is based on Rua1 tool (a russian guy that develop a specific MTK took), and i will try to explay step by step.
First, you need the drivers ADB installed on the system. If you don´t get yet, then download and install PDANet (for windows, there is the 4.12 installer).
Then install PDANet, and when the program ask for connecting the device (USB), connect your Much.
Program will install drivers (if ask to you, select "other manufacturer" for generic drivers)
When you get installed this program, then go and download "MTK Droid Root & Tools | MediaTek Android Smartphone" ver 2.4.8 (from this thread on XDA)
Run the program. If the antivirus or firewall warning about a unknown thread, ignore it.
The program will run adb and connect with your device. No matter if you set root for ADB and Apps in System Settings, the program will inform that the device is not fully rooted. (there is a yellow rectangle)
Press ROOT button.
When finished, the rectangle will be green

Click on the tab 'root,backup,recovery' and select 'to use boot from phone' then click on 'recovery and boot' and shortly after a dialogue box will appear asking if you want to 'make cwm recovery automatically' click yes

About Battery
Some words i must to say about this point. This device is the first handheld gaming console that i forgive to take care constantly about battery level. In fact, using as a normal smartphone and as a gaming console, is a heavy use for me, more than my normal smartphone (i like to use a Motorola Razr), and my phone, only as phone, battery is not longer than Much device.
I don´t know how many hours it can be working, but i´m sure is enough for most of users that want a good duration.

These 3 screenshots was taken when i get in home, in night (well, really when i remember to take these screenshots)
The most important of these screenshots, are that the device was working as normal usage, with WIFI enabled, one SIM card enabled, and most time (when i´m in train or bus) with Bluetooth enabled (for bluetooth audio), with all normal options for a smartphone standard enabled (GPS, Vibration, etc), and most important, playing normally, and the battery, well, you can see the images. For this reason i can mention that i forgot to check constantly the battery level, to calculating how many time i can play, or anything.
And of course, the battery is replaceable, then if you really need more battery duration, simply buy another battery pack, and carry with you to replace when you go out of power.

I made all the instruction on your blog but after pressing Vol- android screen suddenly disappear and I can only see ireadygo screen and I could not do anything else. Axgio Neon N1, Neonado V1.1, IOS7 style, Samsung S5 UI ROM

The good: Neon N1 refreshed my judgment on the hardware of MTK6582 plus 1GB RAM by its smoothness. The 720p display belongs to the good kind, showing crispy details and pleasing eyes. Fine craftsmanship.
The bad: Front camera is as low as the phone’s price, or worse. Battery capacity is low, unable to stand heavy use.
Bottom line: As a low-end Chinese-branded phone, it does have drawbacks that we can anticipated while it has a few points that are pleasantly surprising. Altogether, I feel the phone is worth, or fantastic for, its price.
My interest in lesser known Chinese-branded cellphones was aroused when I saw some of them, powered by the MTK6592 octa-core chipset, able to run demanding games in a decent manner. Since then, I’ve seldom looked back to 4-core MTK stuffs, which have nothing to flaunt in my opinion.
Neon N1 should have been ignored if the Axgio company didn’t draw my attention with translated Lewa OS. And when I saw MTK6582, 5-inch 720p display, 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM, 8MP/5MP camera, and a price of 99.99 US dollars, I spoke to myself “it’s as cheap as rubbish”. I meant it would be too cheap to be good.
Quite on the contrary, the N1 gave me a good first impression on the lock screen, where I saw the wallpaper shown with vigor before my eyes. I subliminally unlocked the screen and slid my finger on it a few times. The switch of home screens was very smooth, smoother than on all the 8-core smartphones I’d experienced. The reason will be stated later, but anyway, I felt the passion to know more about Neon N1. And the following is the record of my tryout.
1. Design
Axgio has “chosen” a design for its new phone, rather than “design” it. I can name at least three models with similar appearance, Doogee DG2014, KINGELON HD5000, and iNew V3. The aesthetic language of cambered back plus narrow and flat metal edges was derived from HTC One to my memory, or Apple’s iMac if not limited to mobile phones.
Of the three imitators aforementioned, I like the DG2014 the most, while Neon N1 is not bad either. The Axgio stuff looks as thin as its right or left edges, which were plated with champagne like the golden iPhone 5S -- I think the sliver on its black version seems less gaudy. As the palm is curved when forming a grip, Neon N1’S back cover fits quite well into a hand. However, the swelling camera lens is vulnerable to abrasion and collision.
In comparison with hideable onscreen menu, home and back buttons, Neon N1’s touch sensitive buttons are a little fogyish and add to its size. Well, I’m being captious to a product worth only 105 US dollars.

Craftsmanship-wise, all inevitable seams on the N1 are so narrow as not to collect dusts; the back cover has a smooth texture but does not reflect lights in a cheap way; all physical keys are elastic and responsive.
Neon N1 has a passable look for me in a word. By the way, girls may like the extra pearl white leathery protective case, which delivers a feel of Anna Sui wallet.
2. Display
I didn’t expect any highlight on a phone too far below the average price of its peers (the DG2014 has the same preferences with Neon N1 but cost USD35 more). Neon N1 changed my opinion somewhat by its image defining ability. The display shines steadily with pleasant saturation and sharpness, while an image is shown with great integrity so that you don’t feel granules.
To examine my feeling at first glance, I borrowed from my friend 3 other mobile phones with good reputation for displays in comparison with the N1, including THL T11, Doogee DG2014 and iNew V3. All of them are equipped with 5-inch 720p displays.
We can see from the real-time photo that the three displays differentiate very little in terms of details. Rather, the N1 shows more distinct layers than the DG2014 and THL T11 in over-bright areas such as the doggy’s hind part of body.
Color-wise, yellow, green, and red colors are true to life on Neon N1 where you can see the grass greener. On the other hand, the display is weak in showing purple, so this color tends to blue here.
The N1 has a cold display in terms of color temperature, much colder than iPhone 5.
To sum up, Neon N1 is equipped with a nice 720P display, with some tolerable weakness though.
3. Camera
The real resolution of the N1’s back camera is low, as low as most Chinese phone cameras, so details are hardly clear in distant view and objects in close view are not so lifelike. Color-wise, the camera is true to bright green and yellow, too, but dark tones are a little bit grey. Besides, you should hold the phone firmly and hold your breath in low-light environment or under fluorescent lamp, or you may get unfocused photos.
The front camera exists just because it’s weird that a phone does not have one. I can judge from the selfie picture that it is myself. That’s all.
4. Operating System.
A Spanish Youtube guy made a very explicit introduction plus review over the Noenado OS, or translated Lewa OS, on Axigo’s last model W2. It was a Beta Test version with many bugs, which have been corrected in the ultimate version. After a few weeks of experience, I found the custom-made android operating system quite lovable, which resembles somewhat to Huawei’s Emotion system.
To be specific, the task killer and traffic control widgets are very useful to me, who uses mobile Internet as often as the fixed-line. And I recently got crazy about themes. As a regular user of iPhone, I never felt the magic of thoroughly changing UI style, except once, when the iOS was upgraded to the 7.0 version.
A new theme made me feel it was a new phone. The HTC Sense-style and Transformers interface below is in fact two of the themes I downloaded from Lewa’s forum. Lewa OS has got many fans on XDA, and some of them may upload their DIY themes here. You can drag such files to the Lewa – Themes – Lwt folder in the Phone's storage and apply it in the Lewa theme store, which was preinstalled on the cellphone with dozens of themes for free downloading.
By the way, the Neonado OS does not contain all language packages of pure android, but only Chinese, English, French, Spanish, Russian, Italy and Germany.
5. Performance:
I was wondering these days why all the MTK6592-powered Octa-core cellphones had more or less hiccups in the switch of home screens while N1 is much smoother in this aspect. Initially, I thought it was the Lewa OS that counted for the higher speed. And the OS did perform better than the pure android 4.2.2 in a comparative test I made between iWing WTD2 and Wing W2, two same MTK phones with different operating systems.
But my conclusion changed a little when I tried out Doogee DG2014, which, with the same original Android 4.2.2, MTK6582 chipset, and 1GB RAM, is agile, too. Factory optimization is important, surely, while the 8-core CPU may have been weak in some points.
We know that MTK6592 has a clock speed of 1.7GHz, but it is achieved by 8 processing cores united. So its single-core capacity may be below that of MTK6582, which has 4 cores with a combined frequency of 1.3GHz. When we are carrying out some simple actions or using non-demanding apps, only one or 2 cores are activated, so it’s natural if you see more 8-core mobile phones with sluggish user interfaces. And err…., Geek bench does not agree to my point of view.
After too much reasoning, I feel Neon N1 has reassuring smoothness and you can see that from my video. Though I know the phone is not able to run demanding games, I still played NFS Most Wanted to see its max capacity. And, it’s not too bad.

6. Battery
The face-value of 1,800mAh is a little bit embarrassing at a time when 5000mAh has emerged. Well, I didn’t find it too poor for one-day use, perhaps because I seldom used it heavily. As before, I let a 720p MV loop on the N1 with middle display brightness, and finally, it sustained for less than 4 hours.
7. Others
The phone supports screen mirroring to digital TV. But I don’t have a TV dongle at hand, so I didn’t test this function.
Conclusion:
I did not mean that the Axgio company made a cellphone with outstanding display and smoothness in all handsets. In general, it is a normal mediocre phone without prominent defects, while it is excellent if compared with its ridiculously low price. Its adoption of Neonado (Lewa) operating system, especially the changeable themes, is a bonus point. If you just use a phone for phone calls, mobile Internet, and simple games, Neon N1 is a fine choice.

Axgio company has released the Neonado V1.1 version, where many localization bugs have been corrected, and most importantly, OTA service was added for online update. The V1.1 rom package and tuturials are on the Axgio's forum.

Tutorial for Miui Theme Transplantation to Lewa
This tutorial was first posted on The Neonado official forum. Neonado OS is translated Lewa OS, so themes generated from this tool is actually Lewa themes. The Transformers theme mentioned in the topic post was also transplanted from MIUI, and you can download it from Google Drive.
MIUI may have the world’s most profound source of themes, thanks to the millions of fans who contribute to the operating system. To make more theme manias also share the treasure, some guy built this software to convert MIUI themes for application on the Neonado OS. The program was written in Chinese, but the use of it involves only a few steps, so I make this tutorial to tell you how.

1. Download the zip folder from my Google Cloud storage:

2. Unzip the compressed files to a newly built folder anywhere on your computer. You can name it Neonado Theme Converter (henceforth abbreviated as NTC).
3. Drag a MIUI theme file with mtz suffix to the folder.
4. Double click the BAT-suffixed program, and we start the process of making a Neonado theme out of a MIUI one.
5. Well, if you have only one MIUI theme for conversion, the process involves no more than pressing Enter and some number keys. You can follow me like this: Enter – 1 – Enter – 1 –Enter – 1 – Enter – 2 – Enter – 1 – Enter – 2 – Enter -- 3 – Enter – 4 – Enter – 11 – Enter.
And now you can see in the NTC folder a new file named lewa.lwt, which is exactly the end product we want. Rename it and drag it into the LEWA – Them – LWT folder on your phone storage. Finally, you’ll see the theme’s thumbnail in the Theme app pre-installed, where you can choose and apply the theme.
6. Even if you’ve dragged more than one MIUI themes into the NTC folder aforementioned, you can convert only one of them each time and the process is different just in the step about choosing which one. OK, don’t bother but follow me: Enter – 1 – Enter – 1 –Enter – the order number of the MIUI theme you are going to convert – Enter – 2 – Enter – 1 – Enter – 2 – Enter -- 3 – Enter – 4 – Enter – 11 – Enter. As all generated Neonado Theme files are named Lewa.lwt by default, you should rename it before start next round.
7. The above five steps, or six, will surely bring you applicable Neonado themes, but they will have the same name, and in Chinese, as shown in the Theme app. If you don’t mind, then you don’t have to take the ultimate step to change the display names. This step should be taken before you type “11” in the fifth or sixth step.
7.1 Download and Install a Ntepad++ software.
7.2 Go to the NTC – theme done folder, right click the description.xml file, and chose “Edit with Ntepad++” to open the source code editor.
7.3 In both the two namelist sections, replace the Chinese characters between the “name” tags with the name you want to display. Save to complete the renaming.
7.4 Type 11 in the MIUI to DAT-suffixed converter and then press Enter to complete the conversion.

Hey, this conclusion is just about appearance. DG2014 seems thinner and its metal edges have a better finish, but it is too expensive having the same hardware preferences with Axgio Neon N1.
The Neon N1's camera is not very good, indeed. Do you agree that its display is good at the 720p resolution?

hi, i have enjoyed your review. i received this termina too to make a review for a spanish forum and then i started cooking for it. when i was making a port of s5 to our neon i bricked it and when i search for the mtkdroidtools backup to flash it from pc i saw that it wasn´t anywere, i have lost it...and my phone can´t be swicth.
i now that it is work for you but if it would be posible to help me with another mtkdroidtools backup of you phone it would be really great, thaks

Hey, i've tried both the IOS7 Style ROM and the Samsung S5 ROM. Samsung S5 UI is fantastic, vivid background and smooth launcher, but it's weird when i connect my Neon N1 with PC, the PC can't read the phone's storage.

I know. I am working on other ROMs and haven't solve it but it is easy
Just unpack the boot.IMG and replace the file "init.USB.rc" with the stock's same file and it must work.
I will try to take some time updating those ROMs but 4.4 is near to arrive and it would be more effective to waste time developing KitKat ROMs
