If you have any questions, please refer to this thread. I've moved it there as the Nexus 7 forums are a bit more active than the Kindle Fire forums
End Result
Getting Started
YOU WILL NEED
-A computer with Photoshop installed
-Basic knowledge of how Photoshop works
-A bit of patience
So go get a cup of coffee and let's get started. First fire up Photoshop (or whatever image editor you are using) and create a new image that is 600x1024. (Or whatever the screen resolution of your device is)
The 600x1024 is the resolution of your screen. If you want a landscape boot animation, you make it 1024x600.
File>New
Now that we have a canvas that is 600x1024, let's make a background.
BACKGROUND
I used the gradient tool and created a gradient that was dark grey in the middle and went to black near the edges.
This is done using the gradient tool using the radial setting. Drag from the middle to one of the 4 corners.
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Now the background looks great right here but I want some more texture. I grabbed a wooden background and put it as a new layer on top of the gradient and set the opacity to 60%
TEXT
Then I added the text "TUTORIAL" in Devil Breeze font with a slight gradient over it.
LOADING BAR
Now that we've got the Background and Text out of the way lets do the loading bar.
Use the rounded rectangle tool with a radius of 5 pixels to make a shape that is roughly 447x48 (doesn't have to be exact)
Here is roughly what it should look like.
Now create a drop shadow using the following settings
Next create an inner shadow using the following settings
Now here's what it should look like. It has some depth and looks like it's sunk into the wooden background.
The background of the Loading bar is done. Now we need the actual moving portion of the bar.
Create a new rounded rectangle shape that is about 1 pixel smaller on each side than the loading bar background that we just created. (You can just duplicate that layer and resize it) I'll pick a nice blue color for it but of course you can choose whatever color you wish.
Plain blue is pretty boring though. Lets make it glossy! Duplicate the layer that we just made and make it white. Then delete the bottom half and set the opacity to around 8%.
Now it's looking snazzy! There's one last thing to do... Well, ANIMATE it of course! That's why it's called a boot animation.
ANIMATION
Now we need to set up Photoshop to do animations... Window>Animation
Now an animation window should come up at the bottom of your screen.
Next we're going to merge some of the layers so it's not so messy. To merge layers Shift+Click on the layers you want and the right click and merge layers.
I merged the Gloss and the blue loading bar to create one loading bar. This should leave you with 4 layers and they should be in this order. (From Top to Bottom)
1. The loading bar
2. Loading bar background
3. Your Text
4. The main background
Now click on the Loading bar layer and go to Layer>Create Clipping Mask
Then give the Loading bar a drop shadow and set the distance to 0. This gives it a slight 3D look.
We're almost done here.. hang tight!
Then move the loading bar layer straight left until you can't see it anymore like so.. and then click on the little clock next to Position.
Next drag the slider over to 04:00f (4 seconds) and then move the Loading Bar layer back over to the right so it's fully visible again. Now if you slide the slider back and forth between 0 and 4 seconds you should be able to see the bar moving.
We're done animating! Pat yourself on the back for making it this far. But hold on... we need to save this don't we?
SAVING
Go to File>Export>Render Video
We're going to name it 0 (Zero) (Otherwise you will have to go through and rename 120 different files), Create a new subfolder and call it part0. Select Image Sequence. In Range we're going to select the In/Out Frame option. This should be from 0-120 because our animation is 4 seconds long at 30 frames per second. Then go ahead and click Render and you're done

Rename the zip file to bootanimation.zip and overwrite the existing zip file in /system/media
The boot animation will work on any android device on any android rom with a 1024x600 screen resolution.

Do you mind uploading the file and linking it here so I can check what's wrong with it?

Thanks to everyone that helped and anyone that ever put an adb code, rom, theme, or other help on this forum. I just checked it works on Regaws and Damages latest
So only to save someone hours of looking around here's how I make a theme. first you'll need to get gimp,7zip, and avabox. Google gimp and 7zip and it will take you right where you need to go. You can get avabox right here at xda. Install gimp and 7zip. Unzip avabox in your c drive. Reboot. Now take whatever rom your going to be working on and unzip it using 7zip.
Using the now unzipped rom go to system/framework and copy framework-res and com.htc.resources to your desktop. Then go to system/app and copy Rosie, Htcdialer, htclockscreen,phone, and dialer to your desktop( If you didnt already know these are all apk files). Now right click on the apk files and extract them to your desktop. I like to put my extracted apks on one side of my desktop and my apk on the other side. open anyone of the extracted folders I'm gonna use com.htc.resources. Go to res/drawable-port-mdpi. You should be seeing alot of png files . Right click on common_app_rosie_btn_left_pressed.png and select edit with gimp. This is your left rosie button when pressed down. Using gimp change how you want this image to look like. If you right click on the image while in gimp and click image scale it will tell you what scale the image is and allows you to change the size of the image. Also knowing the scale of the image lets you take any image and scale it down to the correct size, rename it to the correct file and replace an image (you could have smiley faces as a rosie if thats what your into). So when your done editing the png files open up the unzipped apk file and right click on the same apk file scroll to 7zip and open as archive. Then in 7zip delete the file your replacing then replace it with the new image.then close both files now youv'e got two choices depending on how many apk your going to replace you can put it back in the the rom and resign it using avabox or you can push it threw adb. thats it any questions pm me and I'll try to answer them and update this thread.
nice to see you got it posted

Personally I don't care for it either, but I will keep a eye on what the OP does for Mods in the future.
I dont like to do the normal rosies but any requests?
A red and black glass blood splatter theme would be cool.
Red glass Droid launcher. Black themed dialer with red button presses (maybe some red specs on the black dialer buttons kinda like a blood splatter). Black glass no notification with red specs to the dialer. Clear lock screen with blood splatters/specs of blood. Plus red button press highlights for all on-screen button inputs. If you can do it, it would be totally awesome.
TrevE created a thread for Mods and Themes based Damage's new 2.1 ROMs.
MarksTheme_Taskbar_DamagedTrev.zip is found on the first post of the thread and would be ideal base to work off of for this. It already has red highlights and a majority of the stuff completed in it.

Ok I flashed jello. Time for some constructive feedback...
I like the draw down bar for the notifications. The notification icons need a transparent background to them to give them a clean look. The glossy look to the buttons on the launcher and dialer seem off... I can't put my finger on why, maybe the contrast between the gloss and the buttons need to be subdued. The red that the launcher buttons turn looks weird due to pressing a glossy button then it turns a solid color. The background for contacts on the dialer makes the contact names barely viewable.
The file is pretty big, 13 mb, wow. Maybe cut your theme into pieces to reduce size, plus people will be able to use pieces from your theme to mix and match with other themes.
Good job on figuring out how to theme all this out. If this got cleaned up it has potential to be a pretty sweet theme. Keep on digging in and seeing what works and what doesn't work.

Yeah i gotta figure out how to decrease the mb but as for the breaking it down thing it would take to much time. Actually I just thought about the 13 mb thing and if you think about it your installing 6 new apk files so that is probably why. I know i've got 108mb free space still on my phone
if you do a blood splatter theme i will be all over it!
does this work on fresh? I ask since it uses the same framework (afaik) as damage's roms

This will NOT change the color of your status bar. This will only add a transparent background to the drop down bar and place the Droid on the bottom right corner.
***Make sure USB Debugging is checked under Settings>Application>Development***
Here's how it's done:
1. Download & install Stericson's NinjaMorph from the Market
2. Place your desired Droid image on your SDcard and rename it to status_bar_background.png (doesn't matter where you put it)
3. Launch NinjaMorph and click tap on New Project
4. Go to /system/framework/framework-res.apk (Files will get extracted and a backup is created automatically)
5. Go into /res/drawable-hdpi and find status_bar_background.png
6. Tap on the file and it will now ask you to find the image you want to replace it with
7. Find the file you placed on your SDcard and tap on it
8. You will get a warning asking if you're really sure you want to replace it (Tap Yes)
9. Tap on the blue arrow on the bottom right corner
10. Tap on Finish Project
11. Tap on framework-resapk (NinjaMorph will now package/create the apk)
12. You will get a warning asking if you're sure you want to overwrite the apk (Tap Yes)
13. You will now get a warning asking if you want to zipalign (I chose no)
14. Tap ok on the next warning
15. Choose if you want to delete the project
Your phone should now reboot automatically and you should have your new Droid on your drop down notification bar that looks like this.

So I'm trying to learn a little about themeing here (use to do BBs back in the day) and am taking baby steps I used this mod for a little while and decided to try to make it a lil more personal so I added my name. When pushed to my device it repeated the image over and over again as if to small... So I resized 480x770 and this is what I get, what am I doing wrong? It's supposed just like the original here just with Cadillac script beside it at the bottom...

Rooting is easy, and you'll never go back

So here's my bootanimation I created. I've never really done one before, nor do I have much 'photoshop' experience either, so go easy on me! I truly have mucho respect for those that excel and are efficient with these programs.
I had some strange issues creating a transparent background for the red and blue version, so they have a full screen black background. Also, by not having transparency, I can save in jpeg format which is *MUCH* smaller, and noticeably snappier. (UOT who has this converted it to png)

Well, I wish I were able to. When contacting the creator, I learned that the character was built, rigged, textured, lit and comped by a team of people. I doubt I could create anything nearly as good from scratch. Those that can have my sincere admiration.

Hmm, it runs almost perfect on mine. For a 'normal' boot cycle (after the rom has been loaded, and dalvik all set up), it runs for one complete cycle slower, then on the subsequent cycles it speeds up. It's 112 frames long, which is certainly within a normal range for a boot animation. Just turned my phone off/on and it ran through a good 4 cycles.
Now if I stop the core to push a file into the system partition, it gets chopped when I start core again, but that's different.
Nice one, fits perfect for flavoured ice dark cherry theme on Enoms rom

I like the green, too! Here's the first version I did that's in the original colors, and with a white background. **The white background does not cover the entire screen, there are black bars above and below**
And in a recovery flash file: OG-bootanimation.zip
I've changed the folder placement to /data/local/, as after reviewing AOSP, it looks like it checks there first anyway, so unless your bootanimation command has been altered. I'll update the Red version here shortly as well.

You're right it is easy to do a simple hue change. However, where I ran into difficulties was in the black background. For some reason, I had trouble introducing strange artifacts that only showed on the phone, not in the individual images. Here's a highly compressed/downsized example put into a gif:
But when I put it on the phone, it looks like this:
Had similar problems with the red version. I think it has something to do with how I changed the background, as I never really had too many problems with the original version. But since you got me started on it, I'll try to get it finished

Thanks. The green is my personal fav, too..I think it shows his texture, and 3D like qualities better.
Ideally I'd rather have a transparent background, which I would think would show as black. But having him on a transparency like that would make it easier to do other things later. I just haven't learned my way around the image editing stuff very well...but I'm learning.
I've got a couple other sections of video I *think* I might be able to isolate with some work. Some of this stuff if pretty tedious though (for me anyway). That android guy I put in for an avatar earlier... I had to reconstruct the right 1/3 of his head as it was covered by something else on the screen. And as long as I spent on it, I'm still not near as good as what the original creators did.
i just pushed the green version with white bg, it woulda been fine but then now the top 1/3 and bottom 1/3 of screen is black and the mid part is white

Oops, my bad...I guess I didn't really explain that. Yes, that's the correct display. The area of video that the base work was lifted from was a 16:9 aspect ratio, and our phones are like a 9:15 aspect ratio the other way. As that was my initial piece, I was more concerned with getting the animation smooth sized right. But after seeing it on the phone, I actually kinda like it the way it is.
I'll update the op so that folks are aware ahead of time. Work is planned for the green guy for sure...
and when everything smooth out you should add strobe lights for the robot to dance to or music notes... something in the background.. idk.. lol
am I the only one having issues installing this bootani?
I tried with AmonRa (1.8.0.1) with error "no installation script" or something like this.
Then I copied the bootanimation.zip file directly into /data/local
both 2 methods didnt work for me...
help me please...

Well, I'm not sure what to tell you. What rom are you running? I know one of the desire ports is putting it in /system/customize/ or something similar..can't remember.
Try pushing the file to your /system/media/ folder and see if that works...
Ths is really cool!
Thank you!

Alright ladies and gentlemen, I have spent many a sleepless night working on this and it is a few boredom filled days away from initial release, but far from completion. I am looking for feedback! If you don't like something, tell me and I'll look into it.
This started out being a Steampunk theme, and I think keeps the basics of it, but is not full out Steampunk.
It will be for most roms using the VillainTheme system, not theme chooser. There will not be a battery % displayed in the status bar, just the images as normal.
BEFORE YOU POST, CHECK THE SECOND POST FOR THINGS I'M CURRENTLY TRYING TO FIX / EDIT.
Pay no attention to the LauncherPro dock and icons at the bottom and let us begin...

Downloads
SteamPunk Initial release, still a lot of work to do. Flashable, should work with most 2.3.x roms.
Random Wallpapers that I think go with the theme.
Market Link to a free LWP that looks ok.
Thanks goes to bmann_420 for hosting over at SuperCentral.net. If you want to donate to someone, contact and donate to him since he is letting me use server space for free.
Things I'm trying to fixImage #1
Make the on / off icons bigger. Also some of the on / off buttons are not made yet, I forgot about those
Image #3
The USB stick is colored when you mount your SD card.
Image #4
Same as #1, maybe make the background more see through.
Image #5
Add a background image to the dialer. Probably leather.
Working with Mister Hat to make another dialer.
Image #6
Align icons
Image #7
Align icons
Image 8
This image is to show you the change to the desk clock, I don't like the time bars.
Misc
Also changed a couple of icons. What do you guys think; change them automatically or let you change them using adw or whatever?
Code:
8/23/11 Uploaded initial test release.
Suggestions so far:
Rounded corners on tabs.
Get rid of antique phone icons.
The maindock area reminds me of starcraft
Antique phones
I don't dig the antique phone icons, especially the grey one used in image #5 for the phone tab / dialer.
Also, I think you should make rounded corner tabs instead of black/white gradient.
Looking forward to it.
Yeah I agree, I loved the colorized theme.. this one would be something I'd rock in my late 60's.

It's greyed out because that tab is selected. Also this pic was taken early, it's not b&w gradient, it's all tan. I'll add new photos in the morning.
Also I'll look into the rounded corners. Don't know how to do that yet....

Thanks. I actually have considered setting this to the side since there has been so little feedback.
But when I get it done it will work for most roms, G2x and O2x.

Sweet man! Right now I can't think of anything, but if you are inspired to make anything, standard icons (I don't plan on theming app icons), or whatever. Let me know and I'll throw them in.
Keep up the good work...
I"m also looking into what files draw that button bar at the top of the contacts dialer. I couldn't find it by just looking at the .9.pngs, so next I"ll dig through the xml and find what drawables in calls to make that.
I'm getting the feeling that it may be in framework-res, though...if I find it, I'll share with ya.
It is in framework-res, I can't remember the names off the top of my head, something tab selected and unselected. Thanks man.
Sent from my LG-P999 using XDA App
It looks like it's the tab_focused .9's in framework...if you change the shape of that, you'd have to know what else uses that drawable.
However, there is tab_pressed_bottom and such, in Contacts that will dictate a colored bar underneath your tabs when one is pressed.
I didnt' have much success changing the shape of the tabs...I mean, I can change the shape of them, but it just didn't look as good as I had hoped.
So what I did instead on mine, was made the tabs transparent...and then layered up the icons how I wanted them to look. That way, I can make the tab look any way I want.
Here's an example. I am toying around with the idea of making a rounded corner red border to each tab, something like what I attached.
I didn't mean to hijack your thread, I'm just hoping to be nearly as helpful to you as you were to me in the past.
It'd be pretty sweet to use this in the dialer.

That would be cool. If you want to put those icons together, I'll make it an add on for the theme. I like the buttons I have because of the background I've set up, but I'm not above making other people happy
A few people have been asking me to publicly release these icons, so here they are!!! Im using Desktop Visualizer to set these, but any other custom launcher will also do.
Whats New In This Release?
1. Better icon ogranization
2. More colors!
3. Three new icons (thanks m4rcus)
Whats To Come In The Next Release?
1. Better icon calibration

Thank you for making and sharing these. You, sir, do fine work.
However, why is the "molten" pack so much smaller than the other 2?

The Molten ones are the original, the other two are just run by Photoshop in a batch edit so im guessing that has to do with the size differences.
Great job, OP, and thanks for the icons! Anyway of getting them in a darker blue? I'm running CM with the Steel Blue theme chooser theme, and these would just be the icing on the cake
Also, you may want to post these here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824656 to get some more exposure.
SteelBlue below, Hopefully they are not to dark of a blue... haha enjoy.
Oh and btw thanks for the suggestion ill post up a link in that icon collection.
Any idea where to get the wallpaper on the Infected screenie?

Umm I cant remember what launcher decks runs... but unzip them, put the folder from the zip on you sdcard, then hold down on a icon on your launchers home screen and select change icon or something along those lines and you should see all the icons in your gallery. If you are using a launcher that cannot swap icon images then download desktop visualizer off Google Play and apply them through that app.
Anyone know the font being used in the "infected glow" screenshot? Thanks in advance.

Umm no... ive taken the original apps icon image, cut out what needs to be made red or black colored from those images, built the image back together with the new colors then added the glow effect. Ill be the first to admit im no photo editing expert or graphics designer but I originally made these for myself and people asked me to release them. It takes longer then you would think to try to manipulate the icons preexisting colors to get the right look, its not like i just loaded a bunch of icons into Photoshop, tossed on a a hue saturation and said hey, look at these cool icons I made. But if you think you can do the same or better in like a "pretty easy" time feel free to show me up
Oh and btw if you feel like hating on someone go check out that other guys glowing theme because those images are literally loaded in and out of gimp. I should know he asked me how to make the effect.
Also since we are being critical of each others work your ICS them for MikG has the ugliest navbar and lockring I have seen in a while. Go for something more like an SOSX look or else good job haha.
