[Q] I727 3g problem, good signal but no call and data (ask for help from germany) - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

Hi guys,
I have a i727 skyrocket use in Germany. (unlock phone)
The network provider is Vodafone.de.
The phone works fine if you only use it in 2G network both call and data. (stock rom by using *#2263# or *#*#4636#*#*, CM9 rom by select 2g only, or *#*#4636#*#*)
But when I turn it to 3g network, problem happened. (both in WCDMA only or WCDMA preferred)
It appears like, when you power on/restart the phone, at first you can see 4G (stock) or H+/H/3G (CM9) icon and the data arrows flash. At this period you can make calls or browse website. But after maybe 30 seconds or 1 minute, when 4G or H icon gets stable. Then you can’t make calls out and if you use another phone to call it, the voice tells you the number you called can not be connected. And also the data was stopped; the browse shows network problem/times out or the same kinds of notice.
Then I use “GSM Signal Monitoring”, try to find out some regular patterns. I found when the signal switch from one base station to another, at first the phone functions is ok, and later when the signal is stable, the phone dead, and maybe several minutes after, when the phone switch to another station, the phone function works again, then about 30 seconds later, dead again. But in all this periods the signal is quite good. (around -60~-80 dBm)
At first I think maybe is the problem about RADIO.
So I try to flash many different RADIOs (T989, T989D, I727R, I757M, I9210, I9210T, E120K, E120S both from stock 2.3 or 4.0 and both with or without RIP), but they all didn’t solve the problem.
And also I try different ROMs (stock 2.3, 4.0; I727R 2.3, 4.0; T989 4.0, CM9; CM10), and the combination with the radios above, but still didn’t work.
Then I noticed some threads about the fast dormancy, I have tried to turn the fast dormancy off or on. But still didn’t work.
Also I noticed about different 3G data forms (HSPA+, HSUPA, HSDPA, UTMS), then I used *#301279# on stock rom to fix the 3g data form in only one kind or only use UTMS, but still didn’t work.
And later I found it is not about the data connection, it is only about the 3G network no matter about the data is on or off, when you switched to WCDMA, then, when the signal stable, you can’t make calls out or receive calls in, and even the signal bar seems great from the begin to the end.Another thing is if you making a call at the first “alive” period, then before you hang up the phone, it all works. Also if you use some online radio software keep the data flow, and the phone will not “dead”, only when the phone is idle, and later after sometime, the signal “dead”.
And the SIM card works fine in other phones in 3G network.
I have tried this in my home and office. In the office the signal always switched to different stations, so it looks a little better. But at home, the signal always stays in one or two stations, so it much easier to see when signal stable, the phone dead.
This problem confused me already 1 month, I tried everything I found and everything I can image. But everything didn’t work. At this moment, I only can use it under 2G networks.:crying::crying::crying:
I am sorry about my English; I try to explain these clearly.
Really hope someone can help me.

If you already posted this in the Q&A section then why post in general?

MyTouch 3G Unable to Access 3G Network

So I stumbled upon something interesting the other day while running a CSDI ROM. I noticed I was unable to use 3G data anymore even if I had full reception and my menu bar indicated a 3G signal was present. Funny thing is I can connect and use 2G just fine.
Since then I've tried wiping, flashing other roms, upgrading recovery, reformatting and partitioning my SD card but to no avail. I don't believe it to be a problem with T-Mobile's 3G network either (I've since called them an am awaiting any further help they could be).
I've made sure "T-Mobile" was selected under "Network operators" but that didn't seem to help. I know I can "use only 2G networks" but that would just be silly to not try and get my 3G up and running again.
Is anyone able to shed some light or have any input into this situation?
Current ROM: superD 1.11
HBOOT-1.33.0006
RADIO-2.22.23.02
8 GB Class 6 SD card
Thanks,
jephyb
Try *#*#4636#*#* ,and then you can see information phone, there select "wcdma only".I have the same problem like you,the reason is that signal 3G no strenth enourgh and phone always change net between 2G and 3G.
I had no data for 3 or so hours, searched google's live twitter feed and others list data as well.

Thanks for your help, however after switching that setting, it worked for a little bit, then the data connection stopped functioning again. Even though it shows "3G" at the top with 3-4 bars, I simply keep losing the data connection whenever I access the internet.
This is very annoying...

help!! samsung captivate acts weird on switching the network mode to wcdma

My phone acts weird on the network mode 'gsm/wcdma(automode)'
It works perfectly when I select 'GSM only'. This means that I have the APNs right
But as soon as I select the automode so that I can use 3g, phone starts acting weird. For starters the internet does not work. I also lose my voice service. The bars show that I do have voice service, but on making any call the call doesn't go through, and on ending the call the call remains on the notification bar. But if I dont end the call, then it does eventually shut by itself (~15secs) and then the bars disappear and I lose service. At this point my phone has automatically gone into flight mode. On turning flight mode off... the cycle repeats (with some exceptions):
1.notification shows service coming back: 3G, full bars for voice service. (Sometimes 3g doesn't appear at all, and at this point internet does not work but I can make calls)
2.but internet does not work (but if I keep trying it might work for a few seconds. Noticed that because network mode is on auto. Notification bar shows switching to GSM, and then back to WDCMA. On repeating this the internet lasted longer ~a min or two)... and then doesn't start at all (basically its very random)
3.make a phone call and call doesn't got through, lose service and goes into flight mode
I use an unlocked rogers samsung captivate on fido network (unlocked phone on network that share the same bandwidth). I also use a custom ROM: firefly 3.0. Specs are:
model number: samsung sgh-I897
fireware version: 2.2
basband bersion: I9000UGJK4
kernel version: 2.6.32.9
I have gone back to stock rom, and even back to the custom rom I upgraded from (pheonix 4~). I have tried different modems and a lot of ROMS. I am willing to repeat it all if its necessary
Please help. I've spent over a month trying to figure this out. And relying on gsm just doesn't cut it. It would be great if someone could even point me in the right direction.
Is this a phone, sim card, or service provider issue?
I believe this is a service provider issue...do you know what bandwidths their 3g is broadcast on? The captivate can only pick up 850 and 1900 if the frequency is outside those it will not connect.

I use fido in canada which broadcasts on 850 and 1900. I do connect to 3g, but it is only briefly. But then I lose 3g and also my voice connection. And my phone goes into airplane mode automatically! My voice service (bars are full) is consistent when I am on GSM. This is independent of the ROM I use. Why does this happen? What is the connection between 3G and voice service.
based on *#0011#
ECIO on 1900 ~ -8
ECIO on 850 ~ -12

When the phone is on 3G, voice will also use the WCDMA signal instead of GSM. So, if your phone is on 3G and it can't connect, you will likely lose the voice as well.
Some Canandian carriers have separate APN for 3G and GSM. So, just because your phone works fine in GSM mode, doesn't mean your APN is correct on 3G.
Then, some custom ROMs based on EU i9000 ROMs can't handle 850 band at all. So, you need to be careful with what kind of modem is loaded with your custom ROM.
Looks like a kernel issue. Firefly is supposed to include Speedmod kernel and it looks like you have the stock Captivate kernel which I recall does not play well with anything other than a i897 modem. I use to run across the same problem (no voice in calls even though I had signal) when I first started messing with modems/kernels. Flash the latest speedmod kernel and see if that works.

+1
make sure that your modem and kernel are compatible. The KB1 modem will not play well with a I9000 based kernel.

I made some assumptions and just included the kernel version. Ive never messed around with kernels. I am using the one that came with firefly:
2.6.32.9 [email protected]#32 tue apr 12
This is really odd. But my phone is fixed. 3G is working and I have no idea how. I went through my usual application download and install cycles. The only system apps that I incorporated were a cache cleaner called 'history eraser' and a service starting app called 'autostarts'. And my phone is back to normal. Something to do with freeing system resources. Anyone have any ideas? I would think Samsung would need to fix this.
Hopefully Im not speaking too soon. But in the past two months this is the only time when my 3g has worked more than 10 mins
like I thought. I spoke too soon. After a reboot, the 3g stopped working. But it does not act as oddly as before: going automatically to flight mode and my voice service works even when the setting is on gsm/wcdma(auto).
Please help. Anyone have any ideas?
If this doesn't miraculously fix itself again, I am going to reinstall everything for troubleshooting puposes. I have to figure out if this is random or if autostarts, cache cleaner and any other app makes a difference
voodoo lagfix
I read somewhere that the voodoo lagfix changes the file system and the kernel. Could this be the reason why I cant connect to 3g

[Q] No data transfer on UMTS

Hello all,
Been using this phone for ~6 weeks now.
Familiar with all 3G/H and no network issues - been there, done that...
Yet, I find it odd that while my phone is sometimes steady on UMTS, it has no actual data connection (Ping fails and also other tools), while calls can be carried out!
Also, at times, while network signal is showing as working, I'm actually w/o network connection (phone calls) at all.
And last, in several occurrences a day, while I'm not in a call and probably also not in 2G (I restricted my connection to WCDMA only), I get Network signal yet no data signal in the notification bar (WIFI is off).
I tried re-flashing 1.78 EU RUU (for my unbranded phone) with no change.
I tried rooting and putting Lee's ROM with no change.
I switched microsim from my provider with no change.
Is my only solution is sending it back to HTC for repair? or there is another solution to that frustrating (!!!) situation?
Many thanks for any response!

Prevent 3G data connection

Hi All,
How do I make it so that my phone will not try and connect to the internet via 3G (the signal icon on the status bar has 3G written on it). Whenever my phone switches to 3G, internet doesnt work. this has been a problem for me here in Aus on multiple phones. While the icon says H, internet works awesome but the second it switches to 3G internet stops working until it switches back to H. It wouldnt be too bad, if it wasnt for the fact that the bloody thing switches back and forth every 5 seconds if Im in a good reception area, which is almost all the time.
Are you rooted/custom ROM? It sounds like it could be a poorly performing radio. Search for the radio/ril thread. You might find some answers there. You can switch your phone to 2G or 3G networks only, but the 3G option also includes H. So even if you left out the 2G you'd still suffer the same issues.

[SOLVED] 3G consumes more battery than LTE, how this happens?

Hello XDA Community!
When my new phone (Huawei P9 Lite Mini) is on 3G/2G auto network mode, it consumes more battery than LTE/3G/2G auto mode even mobile data off.
I do not understand how this happens? For example, while 3G consumption at overnight is %10-15; LTE is only %2-3. This problem is the same in daytime too. Mobile data is off, unneccesary services/apps disabled, and no extra application installed while this happens. I tried all "wipe/factory reset/update firmware/factory reset/wipe/no app install" procedures, enabling all battery saving options, but it did not work. This is a problem for me when I'm in non-LTE areas.
This problem occurs the same result in different locations. There was no problem with my previous phone and I use same nano sim card.
I tried the following but it did not work:
- Wipe cache, factory reset, wipe cache,
- Wipe data/factory reset over recovery menu,
- Update latest firmware, wipe data etc. again.
How this happens and where am I doing wrong? Thank you for your help, best regards!
EDIT: PROBLEM SOLVED!
I changed my mobile carrier (provider) and the problem is gone. This is very interesting! I worked for hours and days to solve the problem, but this problem is neither caused by the phone nor by the software...
WCDMA (aka 3G with support for 2G/Edge) is in always-on mode on most phones, because that's how you receive and emit phone calls and, for most phones, SMS (in some more recent phones, LTE takes care of sending and receiving SMS/MMS), so if you're in an area where 3G/2G reception is poor, your phone has trouble locking on a cell with enough power to maintain contact, hence the battery drain.
4G/LTE only works for data, and voice if you have VoLTE (Voice over LTE) enabled, but works on a on-demand mode, even with cellular data constantly enabled. In other words, the 4G modem on your phone will memorize the latest position and IP address the nearest 4G tower/cell allocated it, and connect to it using the memorized settings when you need it to.
Not so with 3G, where DHCP doesn't exist, at least not the way it does in 4G: it uses PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol), where an ad-hoc IP address is attributed to each new connection, based on a pool of existing addresses allocated to the tower and its owner (carrier) by the authorities.

Thank you for your reply!
When I googled about 3G vs. LTE battery consumption, everyone says that LTE will consume more batteries. That's make sense on first thought. So what I've been through is very interesting to me.
I think about is there a problem with my phone's 3G antenna. (footnote: I don't know about that 3g and LTE antennas are same or seperate?)
But I understand that you say this is normal, right?
Edit: I found a forum that this problem may be due to the operator (carrier). I'm still investigating...
3G and 4G operate on basically the same principle: receiving and sending "information" via radio waves.
The difference lies in the frequencies each standard uses, the way the data sent over them is modulated and demodulated, and how handsets make and maintain connection, so if you stay in the same location, and set your phone to 3G-only, then switch Airplane mode on then off, it'll take your phone longer to reconnect to the 3G cell/tower with the strongest signal (not necessarily the closest to you), because it'll have to go through the whole getting-acquainted process again, whereas in 4G, it'll go straight to the "Hey, how do you do? Long time, no see".
Now, if your phone antenna has a problem, you could be standing a few feet from the tower, in line of sight, and still get a crappy to non-existent signal. How many bars are showing on your screen is just an indication of how well your phone is receiving the signal from the tower; it doesn't mean that this signal is consistent and steady, hence the bars coming and going in real time.
If I were you, I'd download and install the Hidden Settings app from the Play Store, and run it; there, you go to RadioInfo, and you'll get a lot of information about how your phone modem actually works. It's a bit technical, but it would give you an indication.
I will try and looking for a new carrier. Thank you again. See you.
I changed my mobile carrier (provider) and the problem is gone. This is very interesting! I worked for hours and days to solve the problem, but this problem is neither caused by the phone nor by the software...
