[Q] creating backups

just got my GS4g yesterday, and it's my 1st SP (yay), rooted it with SOC - and I'd like to make a full backup of it's 'out of box' condition ..so I found this Froyo CMW thread and would like to utilize it
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
however, it assumes the reader has previous knowledge of wtf they're talkn about..
I read further in the post "I have sent this to Koush as well to have it added to Rom Manager" - so I ran over to market and DL'd Rom Manager, but now I can't find the file ..hell I even googled "I downloaded from android market, where's my file" and no useful results come up ffs xD - so then I find this thread (yay) - but I can't afford to buy an app, here an app, there an app, everywhere an app app - so are there any free root explorer type applications? -ALSO- how do we mount our device as R/W? ..as it seems every single tutorial I come across is ambiguous
anywayz, I'd be really grateful if someone could help me out here..
I'd like to make a full backup of my 'out of box' Froyo, update it to stock 236, make another backup, flash it to Valhalla black 236, make another backup, ect - thanks for the read

1. Never use Rom Manager! ever!
2. Root your phone and then make a nandroid backup through recovery then flash whatever you want and make another nandroid backup and so on. There are enough Roms here that you really do not need to worry about a stock back-up but, as always it is good to back up everything. Trust in the THE BIBLE as it is your friend.
thanks for actually reading my post  lol
1] ok.. but I DL'd it, where is it so I can delete it? lol
2] already did, and I already found the bible (thx tho)
the problem is these tutorials and guides are ambiguous, and all of them assume you have prior knowledge of what their talkn about.. pretty much , no, exactly like the last
few statements of your own post "then make a nandroid backup through recovery then flash whatever you want and make another nandroid backup and so on" = lolwut? :/
I can't make a backup because.. well, read my 1st post again lol

1. setting/applications/ROM manager/ uninstall
The rest would take a full page post. If I were you I would just go straight to GingerBread and do not worry about trying anything with Froyo. For that go here GB starter pack and follow the well detailed directions and if still confused I will do a step by step for you for GB. The aforementioned guide tells you what to get and where to put it and what to press. The technical knowledge will come in time after dealing with Roms, kernals, flashing, etc. You don't really need to know anything other than what files to use, where to put said files, and what buttons to press and that will get you rooted and Rom'd. Before your rooted and Rom'd you should learn what does what and why and that will take a lot of reading and time but, if your impatient like a lot around here you can always learn after you've rooted and Rom'd your phone.
thanks for your replies swann, underneath my amagad, I do appreciate it lol
ok so.. I DL'd RM last night, but apparently it didn't install because it's nowhere to be found...
it's not in my apps, and idk where DL'd files are stored so I can delete it (it's not on my SD either)
anywayz, before I do anything else, I want to make a backup of my out of box Froyo
(and idgaf if anyone thinks I should skip this part, I still want to do it =)
and in order to do this, I went here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1099374
but since it doesn't fully explain the how to's, I went here --> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1122508
but then I don't have root explorer, and can't afford to pay for a bunch of different apps, therefore, I need to know of a trusted/stable/free alternative - and I also don't know how to "mount my system as R/W"
...and when I google it, nothing helpful comes up.. or is that something indigenous to root explorer? (which wasn't explained, because as I stated, all these so called tutorials are ambiguous)
wait.. is it me or do I seem to be repeating myself? *scratches head* lol
I have all kinds of patience swann, I can do all the research and studying that's needed without qualms - as I know exactly how it is.. I own and operate a forum which specializes in teaching kats how to mod the gta series and how to model in 3d applications.. and we home grow some of the most talented kats the gta modding scene has ever been blessed with ...but that's because all of my tutorials are concise and clear and leave nothing to guess - as are my answers to everyone's questions - so when I ask a question and nobody answers it, but thinks for some reason that they did, I tend to get a little uh.. how should we say.. urhrhr towards them because they're obviously wetoded or some shyt lol
anywayz, assistance would be greatly appreciated..
1. Are you rooted? If not, you will need to do this first.
2. ES file explorer is a good free alternative to root explorer, you will have to go into setting to allow for system files.
3. You would be better off just downloading a stock Froyo Rom and using that as your back-up but...if your wanting to do it your way you will need to be rooted and for that you will have to read because I took my phone out of the box, plugged in USB to the computer and installd GB before even setting the phone up so I am not sure of the process of flashing Froyo or if it even differs from GB. After that I will be happy to help you when you get to point of wanting GB.

thank you, I'll have a look for it asap
my plans are this; backup out of box Froyo, install stock/factory 236 update, backup that version of GB, then flash to Valhalla 236 black w/FBis's debloater
the reason I didn't automatically update to Tmo/Kies 236 is because I've read about the bad KJ6 modem causing text send errors as well as gps failures..

I believe the problems arose from using the leaked KJ6 items. I have not had any problems using anything related to KJ6 items built from the source. When you get to the GB flashing/Roms and such and have any problems just let me know.
for real? ..ok, I'll back this ish up tonight and [email protected] if need be
edit; welp, I decided to just roll with it and install stock 236 w/o backn up Froyo.. and it's exactly as everyone says, longer text messages and/or messages with images will not send :mutherF*$*ingSuicide:

First try at modding.

Ok. I am trying to convert a very nice chinese rom for the samsung captivate, to have english on the ui buttons instead of chinese. I have an idea how to go along with this, and the software, wish me luck and I will keep you updated on my progress with the rom modding. I hope to upload a compleat rom which is satisfactory, soon'er or later. Alot of .apk modding, rom testing, and apk signing will be needed on my part. I'll try to keep it nice like they made it, and the english support is all ready there just not on all the .apk applications included, that's my main goal to get the application buttons 100% ok!.
Frustrating. I just got the rom onto my captivate and the top bar was gone, so that mean's deleteing launguage settings wont take away the chinese interface words on the buttons and also destroy's the top bar. : \ I'm working on it though, I mean it seem's to be an application only issue but I don't want to rid the rom of applications just to get rid of chinese words for english words on some buttons. Any ideas? sry for my spelling. Btw I took those launguages out of SystemUI.apk & GoogleServicesFramework.apk, and i did it with Apk Manager here on windows 7.
Well that project went down the tolit, i'm too new to be trying that just yet, i'm just messing around with adb in cmd on windows for now, it's fun trying to figure things out and mess with my phone remotely! i'll let you guy's know if i find out any thing usful, thank you! : )
Keep at it. A long journey starts with but a single step..:good:
Thank you Grant Barker. I will keep at it, my brother I use his usb cable, he get's annoyed when his hp touchpad is getting low on charge and I got the cable lol, trying to figure out and test stuff with android. I test alot of rom's I find online and a few I really like, i'm more in for flashing a new rom than using one which is strange, also more into screwing around with the files than the normal day to day end user would ever dare doing. I like the stock captivate rom, I see issues though, the old JF6 version (stock) ran smooth as silk with a few audio glitches at boot and a lil lag at first run, but otherwise an ok version even today it still run's well for day to day tasks, the kk4 version (stock) is another story, at boot it has very bad visual lagging, i mean once it get's going it's ok but still there is alot of lagging with tasks, I think the hardware was better off with the intended first rom and JF6 kernel, but then there is the outdated issue with JF6 and i'd like to see a rom made from that version to flash and test, also i want to try and make a rom my self from that JF6 stock version better suited for today's online and offline world. Clean and simple that's how I like it. :fingers-crossed:
you seem young, keep at it...you will be a recognized dev in no time
Ok! here is a modded .apk you can install in the system/app directory of you're captivate with kk4 rom, please remember to delete or backup the SystemUI.apk from you're system/app directory before! trying this if you want to test my first fairly simple attempt using android sdk and other tools. :highfive: Hope you like it! might even get a laugh.
I forgot to say thank's 2 up ^ thanks. I have a question. How do I get a rom i've modified with the kernel into a zip ready to be flashed, using cwm or any other custom recovery for installing .zip ready made roms. I just don't know how to intigrate all that data wipe and install stuff into a .zip file, do I just? put the main / directory into the zip and hope cwm does the rest lol, I know adb can push the files and folders but it has issues trying to delete un-empty folders which is a pain in the rear end, it like says file system is read read only or says folder not empty when i try to delete a folder but it docent care if i delete system files. Under c:\adb shell , then $ rmdir /system/app , it babbles on about the folder not being empty, even after installing the latist superuser binaries and superuser.apk and busybox with all its jargon tool addons or whatever there called. I just want any advice where to look or how to try setting up a .zip with a rom i've modified, so it can just be installed through cwm or any others like that. Thanks! : )
I'm messing with this rom at the moment http://www.downloads.bombaymobiles.in/index.php?dir=Samsung%20Flash%20files/I897/&file=I897UCJE5.zip it's the erliest version I could find for captivate that's downloadable. If you can find a download link which works for I897UCJE4.tar or .rar or .zip.. my mind will be blown..
Hmm I wonder what this is :highfive: oh ya! it's the KB1 stock kernel :silly: It was so easy to get I dunno why no one else had it. Oh! and what's this :silly: http://www.mediafire.com/?i47m7nmcnd66zgr Could it really be the I897UCKB1 Rom in .tar format, my captivate say's yes! :highfive: it is!

careful. font installer causing boot loops now.

Just a warning to everyone. For some reason, "Font Installer" is causing boot loops now. It killed my tablet. Thankfully, best buy exchanged it cause it overheated afterwards. But, loop on new infinity too. Don't know what's causing it. I recovered with soft brick method. But first tablet couldn't be recovered.

UPDATE:
from Dev.
If your font changes are causing bootloops, chances are that you are overwriting the wrong fonts. Please open the Font Installer and click Menu > Preferences > Select Fonts.
If you’re running Android 4.0 ICS, make sure Roboto-regular.ttf is selected
If you’re running Android 3.X or earlier, make sure DroidSans.ttf is selected
If you’re running MIUI, make sure Arial.ttf is selected
tried this morning and works.

I can personally vouch that this happens. I'm was caught by this exact same problem. I too was able to return it. Now, I've been scared straight. No rooting, no unlocking, no nothing unusual. Fortunately, the Infinity does all that I want it to do. So, I'll have to wait a while, until my nerves calm down before I venture once again into the wonderful world of hacking.
Ironically, I just got the update for 4.2 yesterday. So, I don't really need to poke around where I shouldn't.:crying:
You guys shouldn't be messing around with your toys if such a small issue cause you to return them. There's always a way to fix things. Backups are important and so is having a copy of the latest firmware or favorite ROM in hand in case of emergency. I've had the font issue also, not a big deal. Maybe you should tinker with a older device to get some knowledge first before you brick your Infinity

What font did you attempt to install? Did the issue continue when you followed the aforementioned response from us?
Before attempting any customization, we recommend that users have a recent nandroid backup in case anything goes wrong. There are always ways to fix these issues, there should be no need to return your device.

I agree if such small issues cause you to return your tablet then I wouldn't be messing around with it to much. Should also always have backups or a custom/stock ROM ready to flash if something goes wrong.

Hello,
I have root and a locked bootloader on my Droid Razr Maxx HD so as far as I know with my n00b knowledge, I cannot make a nandroid backup. I want to install a font and I know nothing should go wrong but is there anyway I can be sure font installer works with my phone? or do i just need to be sure to select the correct fonts to change?
Thanks for the help.
I have an iball Andi 4.5z jelly bean 4.2.2 OS with root access but my phone is not rebooting after installing font installer. I even can't remount system directory to read/write in command prompt. I've browsed many forums for the solution but can't find any and the ADB command line given in other forums is not working so plz help. Solutions needed urgently. Thank you

I'm running the 4.3.1 CM 10.2 ROM for LG Phoenix (p505). Anything other than Clocktopia, AndroidClock, AndroidClock_Highlight, and AndroidClock_Solid will brick my device. This is extremely frustrating as I have restored my phone 5 times because this results in a brick.
Yes, You have to be careful while using ROM tools
I had selected all fonts in preferences and it caused a bootloop in my ZTE N799D.
I had to flash stock ROM to make my phone work again.
Great tool but needs to be handled carefully.
@Master Ramy
I have an older but new Xperia GO running ICS rooted and with CWM and i tried your apk replacing Roboto-Bold.ttf Roboto-Regular.ttf SoMABold.ttf SoMARegular.ttf => Boot Loop
The same with DroisSans.ttf and DroidSans-Bold.tff => Boot Loop again
Please what are the fonts to select for replace to reach the goal wished ? :crying:

Complete noob at rooting, need help

Hey guys
I was fed up with my phone being extremely slow so I decided to root it (Sony Xperia Miro St23i.
I'm trying to delete the useless preinstalled programs but theres a million on it and so it will take ages.
Does anyone know an app (maybe?) that will auto delete the useless stuff in a safe way without turning it into a brick (just learned that term **** yeh!).
Also: I just wanna do 4 things a lot: use my gps program (daily!), call (daily!), send texts (daily!) and check emails.
Other than that I just wanna play games once in a while, and take some pictures. Any good tips to download? Not like unknown small apps u like but the main stuff I need to install now I rooted my phone (biggest reason I did it was so I could delete this preinstalled ****e tbh).
Please try and keep it in re-re language cause I'm a complete noob at rooting

For root, chect this page http://forum.xda-developers.com/xperia-j-e/general/xperia-miro-st23i-official-thread-root-t2038174
BTW, choose the methode based on your firmware (to see this, open setting>About phone>Check the bottom) :fingers-crossed:
And, for the app that you want to delete, you can use rom toolbox (use google!) and please ask me for the app your going to delete
Cos i'm afraid your going to make your phone bootloop (just kidding!)
