Root ATT 1.73? - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

My wife's still rocking her OneX in firmware 1.73, 100% stock as she was never able to update it. It downloads the update but it never follows through. Is there any root method that still works for this? We got them on release and she never done anything since.. any help?

Would I be able to root, then just install twrp through goo manager? Or do I absolutely have to unlock boot loader?

Lol anytime! With this phone I'm kinda paranoid about flashing random things with my inspire that thing was a tank.

+1 to the inspire being a tank. if the older root methods don't work for you, I used the 1.85 RUU to upgrade my phone first and then rooted it because the one click didn't work for me on 1.73.

Root method didn't work... Tried 2 methods... If I factory reset and update, will it update all the way to 2.20 or came I.get it just to 1.85? Or can I run the 1.85 ruu even though it's on 1.73 firmware?

I don't know if this is completely true, but you may need to relock your bootloader and go back to the stock recovery in order to get the ota update. Obviously, if someone makes a rom from it you can just use that.

Can someone post a flashable zip? I don't want to run the RUU because I don't want to update my hboot.
Alternatively, if someone could post a TWRP nandroid backup file that I can restore, that would work too

Downgrade from 4.1 to 4.0.4 to flash ROM

Well I have an AT&T HTC ONE X and it was 100% stock but the SIM slot failed and I had to get a warranty replacement, and it has 4.1 already installed... Is there anyway to downgrade so I am able to flash CM10 or is there any way to flash CM10 right now?
Thanks.

From what I know if you took the ota update then there's no work around into root/unlock bootloader/s-off as the update patched it up,so pretty much your stuck with the ota update with no root and anything else until someone can figure out another method

If you're on AT&T, no. Downgrading is possible, but you need s-off, and you need to root to get s-off. There is apparent root method for 4.1 on AT&T. One guy managed it on the x-factor exploit but no one else has been able to.

One of the various reasons why the "one-click" methods always look suspicious to me. It often ends up being "one-click root method for every phone . . . except HTCs".
But by all means, OP should try it, and let us know.

Actually, this makes perfect sense in theory as you use that to root. It says nothing about unlocking the bootloader.
Once you have root, you could then SuperCID and then unlock your bootloader.

Plus, if the bootloader is unlocked, the RUU won't run until its relocked.

The phone needs to be detectable. So it must be in ROM, fastboot or recovery. If it cannot detect the phone, ruu won't work. If the phone is stuck at ROM loading, this is also usually acceptable for detection for ruu.

Actually don't do anything. Don't do a thing. You have no idea what you're doing. You need to do a lot of reading and educate on the basics of Android.
First: find out what phone you actually have.
Second: go to that device's forum and stay in it.
Third: read.
Fourth: read.
Fifth: read.
Sixth: read.
Hopefully you're getting the picture.

I stick by that OP shouldn't root. I am really not trying to be insulting, for your own good, if you cannot figure out how to ruu to 2.20, you are clearly not ready. Check the are you ready to root thread in my signature.

Thanks for the lookout, but I've rooted lots of phone and believe it or not I've never had to use ruu at all. I guess this is like using Odin for Samsung phones.

It's just a matter of downloading the ruu and running it with the phone plugged in.

The ruu tells you step by step what to do. These phones are more tempermental than Samsung stuff. If you rush it and miss a step you will probably end up with a paperweight

I agree that Samsung+Odin makes life easier. But I like the challenge in AT&T (and Motorolas). Whatever floats your boat. Glad you got it rooted. Can you put a [fixed] or [solved] tag in your title? That way people can easily find the answer instead of making a new thread

If the OP paid attention to this, he would have been led to the correct 1.85 root method. There is currently only one valid method for 1.85.
