Enable Screen Always on When Plugged - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

Is there a way to enable the screen to always be on when plugged in? I would like the screen on always in the car, and don't want to use a car launcher. I have a generic dock and would like to keep it. I know the Moto phones have a "Stay awake" option in the Developer's Options section, but I don't see something similar in the GS3's.

That option is present in CM10, but I don't recall seeing it on the stock software in the short time that I ran it. Might be worth noting that the screens on these phones do seem to have a quite finite lifespan, so leaving it on for extended periods is likely to cause image persistence on any portions of the screen that have a static image displayed.

I use this app called Custom Auto Brightness that lets you adjust how the auto brightness works. I just happened to see that that app has an option to keep the screen on while charging. Maybe that will help

The software you are looking for is called caffeine. Free on the application store.

You could also check out Llama. It does quite a bit more than just keep the backlight on so it may be overkill, but it's one of my favorite apps on my phone, and it is possible to set it up so that whenever it is plugged in the backlight is set to always on.

extended controls + tasker
Extended controls has a toggle for screen always on
Tasker will allow you to set when plug in to toggle

Thanks for the responses, folks. I was able to set it to "Never Sleep" through Power Widget lite. I'll try some of your guys' suggestions as well.

However, the Motorola Android phones I have had in the past have never had this problem; when they sit in the car dock, the screen is always on as part of the car dock mode.

Yea but AMOLED screens are different, hence my warning earlier in the thread. Not all phones are created equal.

Yea, I'd be careful. When I went into the verizon store to get my S3, on display next to it was a Galaxy Nexus which has screen burn in.

Tasker or Screen On (yep) will do it

Yeah, I see what you guys are saying; However, my Razr Maxx (also Super AMOLED) did not experience any screen burn-in despite have seen many hours of service with the display always on in the car dock.

I've been fortunate enough to not be able to see any on solid colors with an LCD tester so far too... But man, some people act like the possible screen burn issue is how the devil gets in, thats the only reason I wanted to point it out. YMMV and enjoy your ride.

I just wouldn't do this if I were you. Doesn't seem worth a $300 replacement to me.

I think one of the big factors is how long it actually stays on. If it's only on for an hour or two I don't think it'd be that big of a deal, but if you decide to go on a long road trip I would advice having your kids/friends/wife/girlfriend/passenger(s) play with it for a few minutes here and there.

Yeah, mine hardly ever stays on the same screen anyway while it's in the dock...I'm usually switching screens every 5 minutes or so...

Doesn't it also have something to do with the screen being OLED? Isn't that a relatively new technology and not long term tested?
Not even just staying on the same screen but the life of the screen in general..
Idk a whole lot about it other than what I read.
I definitely wouldn't leave it on too long, I'd hate to see a GS3 with persistence or even worse, burn in!

Turn off Fully Charged notification

I hate that notification because I use my phone for my alarm and it lights up in the middle of the night. Has anybody figured out a way to turn that notification off? I have looked and not found anything on the phone or in the forums.
If you can't find a way to suppress the notification, do what I do...turn the phone over. If you don't have the Body Glove case that lifts the screen off the furniture and are concerned about scratches, put it on a paper towel or similar item to protect it. I use a wash cloth.
would also like to know how to turn that stupid notification off - software based and not using a towel though
I don't know much yet but I was digging around in root explorer and if you go to /system/media there are a bunch of .qmg files for battery related stuff, and two of them are named chargingwarning.qmg and Disconnected.qmg. Could one of these be the file for the fully charged notification?

Probably not because the notifications are all text, and QMGs are the 3d files used at boot-up. Most likely those animations are used in the battery meter that is displayed when the phone is off (turn your phone off and plug it in).
This won't help with the light, but the sound can be fixed.

seriously? we are all STILL dealing with this? has anyone found a solution to prevent this notification from popping up?

It is confirmed fix in the 2.2 release - at least the JI6 build we are all playing with. They moved it to the notification bar.
Bumpage!
Been a lurker but just recently got my Captivate. Great forum here! Looking forward to contribute as well.
Well my issue with the "Fully Charged" battery notification is the display will stay on for the entire night. When I wake up in the morning, I see the phone's display on with the notification. Is this normal? I think this was happening just recently but I can't remember. Shouldn't the display turn off after the set amount time of inactivity? Thanks.
Nevermind, I figured it out. Within the development settings, the option to never allow the phone to sleep while plugged into the usb was checked. I wonder why that was checked.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
Ok, I THOUGH disabling that option would put the display to sleep when the notification comes on but it doesn't. =(
Is this normal behavior? The screen stays lit after the notification is on? The only reason why i'm concern is if I'm plugging it in night after night and it's on that particular screen for hours at a time, there might be some burn in issues.

Guess you haven't seen some of the demo Captivate at your local AT&T stores. Seeing the burned in images on those beautiful SAMOLED screen just kills a little bit of me.
In any case, so it's normal for the screen to take on after the message notification comes on?

None of the models I saw had burn-in at all. I got my phone on August 30th of this year. The phone had been on the shelves since July. But I would imagine it's normal for the screen to come on.
I got my phone only three weeks ago, so the phone sitting on display has probably been there a long time. And yeah, samoled screen can get burned in. well guess I'll have to charge it during the day time for now until I can figure out a way to disable the pop up.
Oh my worry is that the screen might be in the on state with the same image for hours while I sleep. That's something I can't leave to chance.

As long as you're not using a Samsung Dock or have the Stay Awake option checked off in settings, it won't stay on. I watch my phone every night. It usually finishes charging long before I ever go to sleep (case in point, it's 3:11am, and the phone was done around 1am) and the screen always times out and turns itself off. It doesn't come back on either.

Ok, yeah that's what I figured. Thanks for confirming it for me. I do have that option "not checked". Something might be preventing it to fall back asleep.
Is there any log within the file system which might keep track of system events? I might have to do a little digging around.
Thanks for your input.

PROBLEM SOLVED ! NO COST !
I saw this suggestion in another forum and it WORKS, so I'm passing it on !
Set the global notifications to SILENT.
Set the notification on Gmail to any ringtone, NOT DEFAULT.
Set the notification on messaging to any ringtone, NOT DEFAULT.
You'll still have a tone when you 1st plug the phone in to the charger, but NO tone when it's fully charged.
Where are these settings? I can't find them any where.

Sounds like a huge battery drain. As often as I turn my screen on and off it would destroy my battery life to have an animation run everytime my screen went black. Cool idea but with the battery life we have on our phones I'm not sure the cool factor would out weigh the drainage.

It's a very good point to bring up, but if you take a look at it right now it's actually already animated. It fades out and in upon lock/unlock.
What he's referring to (probably) is the t.v. power off animation (so basically it just shrinks the image down to the center of the screen before disappearing (like an old t.v) (seems to take the same amount of time the stock one takes)
I would think these would be about the same as far as battery usage, but I really don't have math to back it up.

Hmm very possible. I really hadn't noticed it until you mentioned it. It's very quick but I guess it does fade some. I just assumed that was how the screen powered up though.

That totally could be true also, but my main point (hope) is that the T.V. animation is pretty much the same as it has now, just neater looking
Yes, the TV screen animation is exactly the one that my friend has. It's very quick and I don't think would take up a lot of battery. It would be great to see this as an add-on.
That would be awesome, I love how it looks when using cyanogenmod nightlies on the Droid.

Burn in problem

I know the mod is probably going to lock this thread, but I just wanna tell you that today I went a local AT&T store and took a good look at their Galaxy notes there...they all got obvious burn in on the screen.. they were all the same, the charging symbol. I guess they left them at full brightness for too long..I guess what I'm trying to say here is that no amoled is better than the other and we don't need to turn to Notes when their screens just have higher resolution but still suffer from the same problem.
Pretty cool story huh?

It's called being careful with your phone....
Burn in usually occurs from leaving a still image on a screen for a very long time. So unless a user were to leave the screen on constantly, and leave the phone still for a long time repeatedly, there shouldn't be a worry for burn in. I've always used full brightness on every smartphone I've had and none of them have had any sign of it.

In case you forgot, the notification bar with the time, battery, and signal icon is almost always on the screen. Very few applications an games are full screen so those icons will burn in at some point as they are a "still image on a screen for a very long time".

It took me 8 months of use to get clear burn-ins to my Galaxy Nexus.
If I hold my nexus landscape, on the other end theres a bluis dark shade exactly the area where my status bar is on portrait.
On the other end there are the three soft navbar buttons, clearly visible and burnt in to my screen. The status bar is way worse though.
I almost always keep auto-brightness, guess I'll start having more from now on to avoid further damage...

Keep in mind that the display phones are on from open to close. Also that's even if they turn them off after closing. So I wouldn't be surprised if the screen has burned in.

Update or bad screen?

Hey people
Got my smart watch about 4 days ago and it was all good until tonight and now for some reason i can't see the clock anymore unless i press the power button :S i could have sworn it had a low light mode and the clock was visable ok but since tonight i can't see the time unless there's a light pointing straight at the watch. I hooked it upto the service centre thing and updated it through that but hasn't helped.
am I going mad here and just seeing things? :S
EDIT: i also noticed when i turn it off i get some weird colours appearing in the clockface some pinks/purples. i don't understand it was ok a couple of hours ago and it's been on my wrist the whole time :S
Did you try to reset the watch? Also our you have any custom clocks installed, remove them. As after reset, Sony smartwatch app will reinstall them on the watch, once the watch and the phone are connected.
On your watch, go to settings and tap reset watch.

Just to make it clear, you are not talking about the low power mode right? No backlight, but can be still seen by people in ambient light??? Maybe you should take a picture of the watch so we can clearly see what is going on.
At night my sw2 turns of the screen completely. But when I MOVE the watch it turns on the clock on the display. I think it has an accelerometer that turns off the screen when no movement is detected.

It is a feature to save battery when it isn't worn.
I am more curious as to the "watch (display) turns on from moving it". Does the SW2 have an accelerometer? My watch display doesn't kick on when I move it. Or was this a feature of the earlier SmartWatches?

I believe SW2 does have an accelerometer. Put your watch on a table, leave it untouched for while, screen completely turns off. Not even the low power watch mode is displayed. But once you move it, low power watch comes back on (without the backlight). I observed it many times when it was charging and when left at the bed side table.
But it is not utilized for backlight function. That is a missing feature people are asking for. But I don't really need it. Just like a regular watch, I press a button to turn the light on when I can't see it in the dark.

Wow... I didn't even notice the screen going completely black after sitting for a while. I am still on watch honeymoon, and either the watch is on my wrist or turned off and on the dresser. But sure enough, it does go into a deeper "sleep" mode and wakes up when I pick it up. Nice!
I do see that having it wake to the backlit mode would be nice but it would seem to kill the battery since when worn it would be in more constant movement. Unless they tuned the accelerometer to only wake when a more significant motion happens.

Yeah the previous iteration of smartwatch from Sony did not have always on watchface and it was a necessity. And to see the time you had to turn on the display. One way was to double tap on the watch screen to wake it up. Another way was to light up the screen by lifting your arm and turning the watch towards you. But the second way never really worked reliably.
But I don't think SW2 needs that. As we already have always on watch with great readability even in places where there little light.

[Q] Can I Prevent the Screen from Turning On When Starting/Completing Charging?

I hate this. Every time I plug the phone in or place it on the wireless charger, the screen comes on. When it hits 100%, the screen comes on again. This is completely unnecessary.

Wow, yeah, you're right. Why would I take some little pet peeve about my phone and expect to find help from a community of people who dedicate their time to such things as removing the name of your carrier from your lock screen? Maybe we'd all be better off if we just sucked it up and lived with everything exactly the way the phone came out of the box.
I've worked around this in the past using Tasker and Screen Filter. Just set tasker to activate a fully black screen filter on top of your screen for a few seconds whenever the phones is sat on a wireless charger. Same thing when it's fully charged. Works great.

I like to have the phone set to "screen always on when charging" so when i have it plugged in and am sort of using it, the screen won't time out on me. However, I don't need the screen on when it's not in "use". So with the phone set to screen always on when charging, it suchs that it awakes once 100% charged or when notifications come across and then stays on. This is exactly why all the customization mods are so beneficial. I don't wan't the screen to ever turn on, unless I initiate. Where can I choose that without a custom rom or mod of some sort, I don't think its possible. Anyone got a good option for me?
