Video Formatting - What works for you

Hey guys, I'm waiting on my tablet to come in from best buy. In the mean time I'm getting ready to start converting movies to be ready to throw on when it gets in and I get a 64gb card for it (hope it works without too much fighting). So I'm hoping some of you guys can help me out with video settings. I want a balance of size/quality. and to keep size as far under 1gb each as possible for a standard 90 minute movie. I'm also a huge Futurama/American Dad/ Family Guy/ Simpsons/Southpark fan so obviously lower quality can be used, so if you have converted this type of animated stuff, what settings seemed to give the smallest size while retaining quality for the TF700? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

IMHO even for animation thats way to low a bitrate. I would go with handbrake high profile, shoot for 3-5mbps 720p if they are HD originals. If they are 480p originals then maybe you're ok with that bitrate.
Personally i shoot for 4gb movies.

This isnt going to be my sole movie experience device. This is my travel and work companion. 1-1.5 is where I stick for a good action movie. But comedies and such I go lower. Animation I stick around 700mb. When im getting drunk on an airplane, I want to make sure my movies arnt blotchy and pixilated, but they dont have the be blue ray quality. I run a media server at home (plex) and that's where I keep the levels far higher.
I may have to give hand brake a try, I have been using format factory for years because I can make so many adjustments and chose the containers and formats.

get dvdcatalyst to convert your movies. It has a few presets for all devices. they can range from 1 to 4gb, depending on the initial size of the movie and the quality you want. i highly recommend it.

I appreciate the advice. I don't have an issue converting, I'm just trying to get some feedback as to the actual presets your using as to ratio, bit rate, file type and container types, so on.

Here's what I personally use, you can set what you like otherwise...
For TV DVD sources, I convert them from anamorphic to square pixel, and then crop widescreen movies as necessary. 640x480 SD videos I use a bitrate of 1mbps. Widescreen stuff I give 1.5mbps. These are the copies I watch on the TV, tablet, phone, whatever and I can't tell any quality difference between the original and the h264 encode. At these levels I can fit all of Home Movies, Futurama S1-5, The Office S1-4 and all of ATHF on one 64gb card.
For movies, since these are just portable copies and not my full versions for home viewing, I use the same standards above for SD sources, and for HD sources I scale it down to 720p, crop if necessary, and use a 2mbps bitrate. (you could insist on a 1080p encode, but on a 10" screen are you really going to notice the difference and need to add in the extra bps?) You get a little more pixelation at times, but nothing unwatchable. This keeps it light enough to stream over my local network and small enough that you can fit a lot on while still being a good watchable version.
All audio I drop to a 96kpbs stereo mix.
This is what works for me. What works for any of you may be different depending on what you use it for.

For the native player you need h.264(avc) video and stereo aac audio.

i have movies that are h264 and DTS 5.1. I just drop them on my 64gb card (inserted into the doc) and they play fine, nice and crisp. No need to convert. They are about 4gb in size.

yeah, sorry, using BS. native will play the movie, but no sound.

Ripping Blu-Rays to Asus Infinity

I been ripping blu-rays on DVDFAB and have tried several profiles from mp4, to some labeled ps3, xbox, ipad 3, etc, and they rip and look great on my laptop......Now placing them on my infinity is a different story, I've tried every player on the market and none seem to play them flawlessly, there is always a slight but noticeable stutter in video......This has shown on every tablet i've owned which is Every asus tablet, acer, and samsung.....The only way I have got them to play perfectly is by using Handbrake to bring it down to 720p, but I was under the impression that with the screen being better and also the hardware better than any of my previous tabs, then I wouldnt need to do this....any one able to play blu rays that they have ripped on their Infinity? If so, what methods did you use?

Now, with the infinity, you no longer need to convert them. Just drag them to your card, assuming its formatted at ntfs or exfat. Get BS Player from the market, and this app will play any format without issues, with no issues.

Thanks, Im going to try ripping them to mkv format, I guess I got too used to ripping things in mp4 format, and see if there is success

I tried with a whole bunch of videoplayers and I still get stutter every now and then , even when playing from the internal sd card.I believe it's so I/O sensitive that any sync or operation going on in the background causes stutters in the movie. Both in 1080p and 720p.
Asus Sweden claims they play them without any issues at all and i'm not sure they are telling me the truth. They even suggested it to be sent for repair.
Keeping my hopes up for JB to solve such issues!

You really shouldn't need to re-transcode videos if they are h.264, Just rip to mkv and pay in BSPlayer. Now will you occasionally hit a section of video that is too intensive? sure,happens even on my PC at times. There are 2 main reasons for this.
1) Something in the background kicks off on your tablet causing the stutter
2) Blu-rays are Variable bitrate which means more intense scenes get more bitrate thrown at them and need more power to decode.
#1 can only be resolved by turning of whatever is causing the background action, finding it is another matter
#2 can be alleviated by transcoding to a constant bitrate or a lower profile, however you're gonna lose some quality. I recommend using handbrake.
Also I would suggest placing on external sd card and not internal as internal storage has some IO issues.

Bsplayer. Also, I would suggest torrenting your movies if you've legally bought them. I think that's legal and it gives you better filesizes at times.

No player optimized for Tegra3, 1.6 ghz and 1080p yet. At the moment 720p is the most popular since most tablets support it. I've been sending out messages to the various video player devs out there to get on the ball, hopefully they are listening.

I have been ripping Blu Ray discs for 3 years. I have about 500 at the moment. I use AnyDVD HD and Pavtube Blue Ray ripper. I rip everything down to 720P, H.264 with a high bit rate of 2500. Movies are between 1.75 and 2.50 GB each. I have no issue watching them on everything from 65" HD TV's to my SGN. This combo seems to provide the best compatibility and quality for my needs.

I use Any Video Converter Ultimate with the settings above mentioned.
I can add to this thread that if you re encode your blurays with that method, you will have up to 20-30% higher battery life. Plus you save space on your drive.
Personally if I have the time I re encode my files before copying them. If not I dont care.

BS Player has worked for every rip that I have thrown at it, and was the ONLY player that worked for a lot of them. Give it a try.

I just picked up an Infinity Tablet and looking to convert some of my Blu Rays. I have Make MKV and Handbrake, but I am having difficulty in getting the movie to come out in Blu Ray quality once converted. Any suggestions to fix this, or should I go with something more like Pavtube Blu Ray ripper?
Handbrake seems to take for ever to convert a blu ray from and MKV file. Plus I am still a newb to this whole ripping of blu rays, but I would like to be able to rip to 5.1 audio so I can mirror and play on HD TV when I travel if possible.

Pavtube is what I use and couldnt be happier. Its very easy you should not have any problems with it. B-rays take forever no matter what your using. I put the B-ray I want to copy in before I go to bed and set Pavtube to shut down the computer when completed.
I think the price of Pavtube went down to $40

Can't agree more. Been using PavTube for more than 2 years. No issues at all. I don't shut down my PC or stop any services. I'm running on Windows 7 X64 Ultimate with an X4 965 Black with 4 Gig RAM and a Kingston SSD. I can rip at real time and still surf, use mail etc. Anything too intensive will impact my rip so I generally rip right before heading off to bed. AnyDVD and Pavtube is a winning combination.
I do have Aunsoft Video converter as well. I use that to rip HD DVD's I buy on eBay for .99 cents. Use an old XBOX 360 drive I picked up for 20 bucks. Think I must have every HD DVD ever made by this point

Ok, so I just purchased PavTube and I must be missing something. I don't see the option/Format to rip to ASUS Transformer Infinity. I only see the options for the original Transformer and T100 and 200 and the Transformer Pad...
I clicked on update and, it says nothing is available... any help would be appreciated. If we need to take this offline, you are more than welcome to PM me.

I just use iPhone 4S 720P Format and alter the settings to leave the original frame rate and 2500 kbps for the bit rate. 1280x720 is the size I use. You can probably change this to the native TF700 resolution but then it may not work on other devices that can't support that resolution or down convert it. I was looking for nearly universal compatibility.

Thanks, so I just chose "Motorola Xoom Full HD 1080p (.mp4) and I have to say the pay back is less then desirable and not anywhere near HD. Maybe someone can help me with suggesting better settings. When I ripped the movie it was set at the following:
Video
Codec: h264
Size: 1920x1080
Bitrate: 3000
Frame Rte: 24fps
Audio
Codec: AAC
Sample Rate: 48000
Bitrate: 128000
Channels: 5.1 (thinking should have selected 2.1 as volume is really faint) Was wanting it so I could play on the tablet or Mirror to HD TV and play when I travel.

3000 kbps seems low for 1920x1080. Maybe 5000 but the file will be 4 GB. Try the 720P and 2500. Still looks darn good on my TF700. Are you using the built in memory or an sd card? if sd, it should be a class 10 card for 1920x1080. I have used class 4 cards with 720P but prefer the class 10 cards.
I would also advise leaving the frame rate set at "original". You don't want to use 24fps if the original was shot at 30fps and vice versa. I also don't use 5.1 as many devices cannot down convert and you won't have sound then. I always use 2 channel.

I use Zumo cast to watch any of the 300 Blu Rays I have ripped using AnyDVD decoder and Open Blu Ray Ripper.
Ripped into H264 for view on PS3. Shared file location in Zumocast on PC, and installed on Infinity.:victory:
Files are between 4-8Gb, and play very fluid.

Screen quality good for movies & youtube?

I want to get this tablet mainly for movies & youtube. I know the screen is only 800p, but I have a slow Internet connection so I only tend to watch 720p videos anyway.
How good do youtube and movies look on this display with regards to black level and colours.

This review pretty much sums it up...
"The Note 10.1's display was both a disappointment and a surprise. The display carries a resolution of 1280 by 800 pixels, the same as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and the Toshiba Excite 10.1. That means no high-pixel density clarity or detail on text or graphics, as you'd find on the Acer Iconia Tab A700, Apple iPad, and Asus Transformer Pad Infinity TF700.
However, Samsung has clearly done something with this tablet to boost its display performance. The sharpness and color of images is dramatically better than the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, and my high-resolution images in the Google Gallery had sharpness and detail that came close to what you'd find on the high-pixel density displays. (Another observation: Android tablets typically struggle with skin tones, but the Note 10.1 produced some of the most realistic skin tones I've seen.) Text clarity was better than than on the abysmal Galaxy Tab 2, but it couldn't hold a candle to what you'd get on any of the high-pixel density displays."

I think it's awesome in my opinion. I live the dual speakers having forward. It's now my go to to watch series on in bed.

I thunk this tablet may have the best 1280x800 HD displays out there. REMEMBER. 720P is HD also The display combined with great stereo speakers make this an excellent tablet for media consumption and viewing/listening.

I watch a lot of movies on it. I really don't have an issue with the screen and the sound is impressive.

If you've watched 1080p videos and 720p for example a 15 inch laptop I'd say that you didn't see almost any difference. Of course the screen resolution itself is more important than the videos resolution, but then think about the size, which is minus 5 inches of that laptops screen I find this tablets screen very good. Sometimes I have to zoom webpages but that's only when using splitscreen. So yes it's verygood, but it could be better of course

The screen is accurately calibrated according to "Display Tester" by gombosdev (free in the Play Store). I have no tablet or phone (LCD or AMOLED) that can pass all of the app's gamma tests -- except the 10.1 Note (with latest update).

I was really confused when I wanted to buy a tablet. I was confused between both the New iPad and the Samsung Note 10.1
I was a big Apple fan until I got my hands on this amazing, inspiring, incredible, and lovely Note.
It is seriously one of the best devices I ever had.
Web browsing, youtube videos, movies, gaming, studies, and so much more! "I was actually watching SuperNatural's new episode on my Note10.1 today."

What I am saying is when I try playing HD movies on it --it is just not HD anymore there is always a weird something like pixels intertwined in the background especially when there is a lot of action --it is just supposed to have a 720p HD screen and one can't enjoy it ..I also tried using stuff like handbrake in order to get it the right stuff but still nothing ..

Can you give us a sample of the video? It could be your video player, try MX player. 720p videos works just fine on my XOOM.

I look movies in Youtube app and the quality is great.

download your porn from a more reputable website.

I have tried every MX player be player and a whole different players... and yes videos on YouTube doesn't make any problems

Sounds like your crappy encoding OR video source.

I have never faced this problem... 720p videos play flawlessly some 1080p videos get stuck. Either there is some problem with the ROM you are using or maybe a hardware problem...

Any thing I've encoded with DVD Catalyst 4 (tools4movies.com), using its XOOM HQXT setting, that were from high quality sources (bluray or dvd), look great on my Xoom's screen.
Playback of movies and TV programs via Netflix streaming on the Xoom also look good.
Playback of those same files or netflix via HDMI out to TV sometimes looks a little blocky. But are still watchable. (Netflix really depends on if its a "HD" playback movie or show to look any decent on a TV).
The Xoom HQXT encoded files look as good as those I've encoded (also using DVD Catalyst) for my MS Surface RT tablet, and Samsung Series 7 Slate PC (XE700T1A) using the Surface HQXT setting.
I hate to say it, but the screen of the iPad3 I have has more vibrant, and HD "TV" like colors, where as my Xoom looks more "washed out" in comparison. The Surface screen looks close to the Xoom.
EDIT: I use Mobo Player to play back on my Xoom.

I use jelly bean ROM the orginial and I will try mobo player also ...but still

If you use the proper settings, the Xoom can play great-looking 1080p videos.

Edit: OK I have watched it and it.is Absolutely flawless ..what do usugges I should no now ?? My problem is that I have faced in a lot of movies I was trying to rip .what settings should I choose now?

What settings to use? Well, when it comes to making Good or even Great looking videos for your Xoom (or other device), it depends on 1. Quality source (crappy source video-in will produce crappy target video-out), 2. the optimum encoder settings for your playback device.
DVD Catalyst 4 has consistently taken care of #2 for me on my Xoom, iPad2, iPad3, BB Playbook, Surface RT and a few of my android phones. It has been the BEST, Easiest, and most reliable way to give me great looking videos to take with me. I've used it to encode DVD's, Blurays, camcorder videos, etc. And they all look great. Ok, so DVD rips don't look as good as Bluray rips, but that is because of the DVD source.
So my Suggestion... Read the following two links...

One draw back of having multiple play back devices (xoom, ipad2, ipad3, Surface, phone, etc), is that to get the best results, you need to encode the video using the right profile for your playback device. So for me, if I encode a movie for my Xoom today, and decide I want to watch it on my iPad as well, I have to encode the source for the iPad so I have a file encoded the best way for iPad playback. Or if I want to watch it on the Surface RT, I have to then encode using the Surface profile, etc. BUT DVD Catalyst does have profiles for all my devices and more! And they do a great job of adding profiles for newer devices as they come out.
Also keep in mind that I don't know if DVD Catalyst can get around copy protection on DVD's and Blurays as I use AnyDVD HD for this. So if your source DVD or Bluray is copy protected, you might have to deal with that before using DVD Catalyst. I do know that DVD Catalyst can't work with DRM protected video files, like those from iTunes, Ultraviolet, etc.
And NO, I do not work for the company who makes DVD Catalyst, nor am I connected to them in any way. I am just a very satisfied customer who has tried other options (Handbrake, Nero Recode, etc) and haven't been happy with the results until using DVD Catalyst.

Actually if you use DVDs as a source, the videos you create using one profile will work on just about all your devices.
Only when you are using HD content, you might run into limitations with the iPad2 (max 1280x720) and your phone (depends on the model).
I haven't had any complications with playing HQXT 1080 on the Xoom, iPad3, Surface RT and the Playbook. They even work fine on the new NOOK HD's and Kindle Fire HD's

Thanks. Most of my stuff is encoding from Bluray now a days.
I'm doing it to put movies on my Xoom (using Xoom HQXT profile) for my Son to watch while we travel. When I first got my MS Surface RT, I decided to copy a few of those I had done for the Xoom right onto the Surface and playback was choppy. Run the original through DVD Cat again with the Surface profile picked and they look great on the Surface. And of course, on my wife's iPad2 the ones encoded as Xoom HQXT didn't play right either.
Encoding for each device is a small price to pay for great looking videos on the device that happens to be with us

Ah ok,
With Bluray, the resolution comes into play. The iPad1 and iPad2 don't like anything larger that 1280x720. If you change the resolution for the Xoom in "Modify" to 1280x720, the movies you convert for the Xoom will play on the iPad2 as well.
I'm not sure why they would be choppy on the Surface RT though. When my RT came in, I grabbed a bunch of Xoom files I had on a drive, and played them without issues (and the bigger, wider screen did make it look even better )

[Q] slightly blurry youtube hd videos

just got my nexus 5 last night.
i am having issues with youtube hd video playback being very slightly pixelated. i have a feeling its a problem with either youtube app itself, or my network but i cant seem to find out why it may be like this. i am currently pulling down about 17.67 mbps on my Wi-Fi, however last night i was pulling down 34mbps and i still had the problem. i downloaded some 1080p videos i shotwith my nokia lumia 928 and they played fine, everything was sharp and clear as it should be.
has anyone else encountered this issue, im not having pixelation in any other apps which why i believe it is you tube that is giving me the problem, how ever my girlfriend has a note3 (1080p display as well) and hers looks clear maybe im missing something in settings?
ps. i have never had any other issues with the youtube app how ever this is the only 1080p device i have other than my tv and girlfriends note 3, is it a resolution problem?

i did noticed that but while using chromes you-tube embedded videos. Not sure if its possible to fix. Videos look like standard def regardless if you are on 3g or wifi

Yes I did, in fact it was enabled by default so I toggled it. And I've yet to watch a video over network its all been on WiFi, its very evident in videos where there are subtitles OE small text on the screen

Whenever I've watched HD videos in the Youtube app on my N5, the clarity has been pretty amazing (unless the original video sucked, then it will always be horrible).

I've noticed that most (if not all) videos on youtube play back in 720p when you choose "HD". So yes, they will look worse on this phone than a 720p phone because they will be stretched out to fit the screen. I don't know if this is a limitation of the app itself or if all the videos I'm watching just happen to be 720p?

There is something wrong with the youtube app. When using viral pro the quality is a lot better.

i also downoaded a 3rd party youtube client that worked better. did you also notice the pixelation?
