What is better OTA or full Flash - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi All,
I have updated to JB by a OTA update. This file is 194MB in size.
Now i see on the Asus site a file i can download: WW_epad_user_10_4_4_16_UpdateLauncher.zip of 466MB in size.
Can someone tell me the difference? And will it better to flash the latest one of 466MB so my whole tablet software will be replaced insteed of updating?
Cheers,

I think full flash is definitely better. It's like a complete clean install and I recommend you should backup and do a factory reset. Update is good for if you going between version like ICS, but once you jump to another OS like JellyBean, I highly recommend full upgrade with factory wipe. Some people may disagreed but for a trouble free, a clean install would be the one to use.

I would be interested in doing a full flash myself because I'm having some issues with JB (see my post)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1920130
and I think I'm the only one with this problems (at least nobody as answered to my thread yet)
I'm with JB (updated from ICS, not full flash), root and custom recovery (CWM)
Can someone direct me/us as to how to do it?

You should able to. I would also run a full backup with Tibu.

I replied to your post. Make a backup and try a factory reset first.

Did the full flash. Reboot.. .A total new welcome and setup screen... Installed VooDoo and root was there still
Now i can play around with a real clear installed JB

[ROM]FOTA 8.2.3.9-20110423 | Root | Stock

This is the Official UK FOTA with root added and the Recovery/Boot update removed. These will not work on a non UK Device. I plan to add updates from other locations so if you have these official FOTA's available, please pm me.
I haven't changed anything else in the update so future upgrades should in theory work with this rom.
Install this with cwm and enjoy the new features that the FOTA update brings without having to worrying about losing root. This rom will only work if you are running the stock rom that the transformer came with. This will only install on top of the previous firmware update and will fail if you are using any other rom.
Root is not required to install this rom
Thanks to MoDaCo for the custom recovery that makes this rom possible.
First FOTA

Second FOTA:
R2_TF101_FOTA2.zip

These are cumulative updates that can only be installed on top of stock HRI66.WW_epad-8.2.2.6-20110325 using custom recovery.

any way u can get a sys dump for us?
like use root explorer and just copy that sys folder and stuff or ADB?
No need for me to do this, as someone already did.
You can get it from this post here:

Good work on the deodexing btw.
thanks man a full rom will be up tonight o and i found this guy and his pet tree in GalleryNew3D.apk
just so we can have some laughs.
Great work. Can I flash this over the Modaco rom?
i dont think so i think u would need to delete app and framework in the system folder then flash my rom
ill be working on the recovery once i get on to help out on the scripts
im uploading a fixed rom go to my topic and u can post there since we r getting OT here.
Thank you for taking the lead on this. We - the new Transformer user base - are in your debt.
My unit, one of the first in the US release, is on its way to me from PC Richard. I'm hearing that it's likely to update its firmware automatically on switch-on. I'd prefer to use your update with root built in, so my questions are:
1. Is there a way to block the auto-update on a new Transformer - e.g. by not setting up its Wi-Fi till I've installed your rom? Or will it update from a version stored in its flash memory regardless?
2. If it is possible to block the initial update, will installing your rom prevent the official OTA from taking place afterwards? Or is a subsequent clash likely to occur?
3. The MediaFire link isn't currently working for me. That's a first! Do you have another link?
Thank you again for all your work.
if u want my rom was based off this just deodexed and a few things were fixed to use less ram etc. if u flash my rom the OTA wont happen. because it will already think u have the latest running since u would.
when the next OTA comes out when it trys to install it will fail most likely just like all other rooted devices.

Thank you for this. So the deodexed rom (V.2) is the latest ASUS firmware with root?
yes everything about it is in the op/changelog area and i will keep that up to date
I really want to try your rom, but i want to know if i can restore the stock and remove clockwork recovery. In case of a warranty

The current clockwork is a "soft" recovery - i.e the physical recovery image isn't overwritten.
Therefore, assuming with the new roms you can still use the same clockwork recovery you can backup pre-flash ("factory") flash the new roms. Any issues, boot back into recovery and restore from the Nandroid.

The Transformer it's a very good device... it's a pity that honeycomb is still so... experimental!
Anyone else getting 403 Forbidden error from MediaFire when you actually go to download FOTA2.zip?
New links added...
Also, I've tried searching for this, but haven't found anything yet. Maybe you can shed some light. In my build.prop, the fingerprint shows US_pad instead of WW_epad, so it doesn't pass the checks in CWM recovery when I try to update using your ZIP files.
I'm guessing the US_epad signifies that it is the US build, and WW_epad is the UK build? My transformer came with build 20110325, and System Update says that there are no updates available.

I figured they would be different, If anyone can get me the US updates from /cache I can mod these and add these to my first post.
Somehow I don't think the US version has updates pushed out yet. I keep hitting Check Update and it always comes back no updates available.

ICS Leak Nandroid Rooted Deodexed NO ODIN

Update: mhx has posted a debloated backup here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1569798
I reccomend it unless you have a need for all the extra bloat!
This is a nandroid backup of the ICS leak. It has been rooted and deodexed (thanks romracer) and has the Apex launcher added. I have tried restoring this from GB with success. I flashed the ODIN oneclick and then rooted/deodexed the rom. I am not responsible if your brick/break your phone, etc, etc.
1)Download the rar of the backup here: http://d-h.st/zpc and Darkside SuperWipe here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1477955
2)On your SD card extract the backup to \clockworkmod\backup\
After extracting you should have a new folder(the backup) that looks like this
\clockworkmod\backup\2012-03-28.00.50.20\
3)Copy the darkside superwipe zip to your sdcard root.
4)Boot into CWM, install the DarkSide Superwipe ZIP
5)Restore Backup - don't reboot yet
6)Factory reset and wipe Dalvik-Cache
7)Reboot!
8)You may or may not see "Android is upgrading... optimizing application xxx of 173". Just let it boot. When it's finished it should go to the lockscreen and then you're done
Update:
This is confirmed to work as a way to go from GB to ICS, thanks hansmrtn!
This will not affect your baseband version (no modem change)
Update 2:
DON'T RESTORE FROM TITANIUM BACKUP. IT WILL CAUSE PROBLEMS
Reset APN's to default once you're up and running. This should restore the AT&T pta apn (for LTE).
Power off and Reboot just hang, as a workaround use QuickBoot (Free) http://market.android.com/details?id=com.siriusapplications.quickboot
Alternate Mirror (two parts - you need both parts!):
Part 1:http://www.mediafire.com/?honpcn7c3j74js1
Part 2:http://www.mediafire.com/?91ixl75cb7wrcbc
I'm not daring enough to try this from GB....someone please

well now you won't have much trouble guys. i went from gb to ics and yeah had little trouble but when i followed these steps from my boyz here it worked.
1. wipe factory,cache,dalvik,battery
2. flash darkside superwipe script zip
3. install rom if its either from here or t989
4. then push superuser if not there then thats it.
5. let it boot and you're set and let it settle for 10-20 mins and it'll be flying done & done.
Just finished flashing back to GB, about to flash CWM and try restore. Hansmrtn may beat me to it. Interesting, I don't know if this matters but baseband didn't restore when flashing back.
Will running it deodexed vs stock make a difference in menu lag and stuff like that?

[HOW-TO] Return to stock rooted ICS US 9.2.1.21 from custom rom (One Stop Shop)

I decided to return to stock today so i could check out the newest ota which was not implemented in my fav rom yet. I soon realized its a pain in the ass to get there. Flash rom, update, update, etc, etc. And even worse is tracking down all the threads required for it.
Though I've narrowed it down to three or four, I thought i'd make a thread to put it all in one spot.
First off thanks to the members/devs that make these updates and roms for us. I dev on the HTC eVO 4g and know how time consuming and tedious it can be.
I am renaming and reuploading all the files required to ensure links stay current and are easy to follow. I will however be linking to all original threads where i got the files as well as giving props to the members who provided them.
I have a US version TF101 and will only be testing on that device. I dont know what works on tf101G, WW, TW models etc
I will update this thread as new rooted ota's come out.
ALL YOU NEED TO INSTALL IS A ALREADY ROOTED ASUS TRANSFORMER WITH A CUSTOM RECOVERY
THIS WILL NOT ROOT YOUR DEVICE, UN-ROOT YOUR DEVICE OR CHANGE YOUR CURRENT RECOVERY.
DONT FORGET TO BACK UP ALL YOURS APPS/DATA
FOR US VERSIONS ONLY
- STEP 1 - WIPE (DOWNLOAD) (This wipe zip was originally provided HERE by mike1986.

- STEP 2 - FLASH STOCK ROOTED 9.2.1.11 FULL ROM AND REBOOT/SETUP (DOWNLOAD) originally provided here by MrNago
- STEP 3 - FLASH ROOTED OTA 9.2.1.17 AND REBOOT (DOWNLOAD) originally provided HERE by daoist

CANT FIND ROOTED VERSIONS OF THE NEXT FEW UPDATES THAT DONT REQUIRE ROOT KEEPER, SO IM STOPPING HERE. THIS WILL GET YOU STARTED THOUGH. i JUST DONT WANT TO BE RESPONSIBLE FOR NEWBS THAT CANT READ LOSING ROOT.
FAQ
-Will this root my transformer = no
-Will I lose root if i flash this = NO
-Can i flash this on top of a custom rom = NO
-Will this replace the custom recovery with the stock recovery? = NO, this will not touch your current recovery
-OMG, I lost root after this = NO you didnt or you did something wrong.
Can you explain why step 2 and 3 are needed?
You couldn't go from 1 to 4 if you want 9.2.1.21?

What model do you have? B50, B60, B70?
If you have a B50 or B60, try this
Once you get back to stock honeycomb, you'll have to root it again.
@baseballfanz : Guy, you have saved my tablet .. I had almost throwed it in the garbage
@ldc2335 : I have bought it in France, and no idea about the version, sorry .. (I don't have the dock)
Well, now, I willl see if it is stable or not :
- if it is, I need to find the way to root it (but I have read it's not possible with the last Rom, right ?)
- if not ... I will try to return to Honeycomb and sell this piece of sh*t, and I will buy the Galaxy S3 or will wait for the Note 2
Thx again !!!!
I use NVflash way and from modded(rooted/CWM/Overclock) 9.2.1.17 directly flash back to stock clean 9.2.1.17 and it's very quick... and root it agan via Vipermod and flash 9.2.1.21 update zip.. Takes about lest than 30mins..
Thats one way to do it. I just dont wanna re-root etc.
Flash, reboot, flash, reboot, flash, reboot..done Definitly 30 mins or less.

Once you unlocked, you can't use OTA anymore. You just have to use custom recovery to flash. The question is are you going to flash custom rom or factory update? Also since you're on custom rom, you probably going to flash another cleanrom?

OK, then you will have to flash it manually and you need a full version of the update (download from Asus site, usually 2-3 days later after the OTA release). You can't flash the OTA version on top of your custom rom.

So, something like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2753248? WIll that have root? And, can you install superuser (Any version of Superuser) on any android version safely?
Well I'm very new at this as well and I see now that the road from sitting on your couch googling what is rooting to becoming a super hacker is a long one, I think I can help. With that being said I could be wrong too so research everything and double check. If you have root access before you do anything else install a custom recovery. I suggest TWRP. Then you want to focus on learning to create nandroid backups and Titanium backups. That way when things go awry all is not lost. THEN you can go for the ROMs. Research how to wipe your device properly with each flash. This is pretty important. TWRP recovery automatically tells you when your wipe has unrooted your device and gives you root again. May I ask is your bootloader already unlocked?

Yeah the ROM you mentioned should work fine for your device. Just follow the instructions in the guide step by step and all should go well. And yes, you'd have root inbuilt since its a CM based ROM, just enable Developer Options in settings and toggle Root Access in it to 'Apps only' or 'Apps and ADB'. I prefer using Chainfire's SuperSU, it should work well with your ROM. Good Luck Flashing ??
EDIT: I just noticed, the ROM you mentioned is a pretty old one. I suggest you flash CM 13 running Android 6.x Marshmallow, there is an official build for your device here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3256696
Check it out!
Thanks all! I found it out. I've unlocked my bootloader, and installed TWRP. Then, made a complete ROM Backup in case everything screws up. (I stored the backups and a stock ROM on a micro-SD card) Then, I installed a custom ROM running a CM based android Marshmallow (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2753248), along with the Google Play apps .zip. Then, made a backup again, and now I'm all set! I think I will still delve into finding the best ROM for me! And all without bricking my phone. I also was successfully able to root my LG G Pad 7.0 LTE using Purple Drake with a special version of TWRP. Again, thanks for all the help! (The next thing I need to do is figure out how to Dual-Boot custom ROMs...)
