Odex vs De-Odex roms - Asus Transformer TF700

Hi all. I'm a little confused about the differences or cost/benefits of deodex vs odex roms. Are there major differences between the two or any contra-indications for using the different types?
My understanding is that deodexed roms are easier to theme, but take longer to boot. As there do not appear to be many theming options around right now,
I'm assuming that the latest deodexed stock ROM is for developers rather than average punters
Thanks for any help, Mike.

Odex provides a tiny speed gain because the vital parts of some apps are decompressed for easier use whereas deodex, those parts remain compressed into one file allowing for easier themeing.

This is supposed to be a universal method to ODEX:

I'm pretty sure the stock rom is already ODEXed. I've been trying to learn how to cook roms and just DeODEXed a UEALH2 stock rom. So I suppose if you wanted to ODEX a DeODEXed Note 10.1 rom you could with this method.

There's not much point to re-odexing a firmware. It saves a tiny bit of time on initial boot, but that's it. It has zero performance impact once the device has booted, and makes maintaining a firmware very difficult. (This is, for example, one of the reasons why Cyanogenmod doesn't odex builds.)

[Q] Performance / Kernels / CM10 vs Stock Roms

Hey All! I feel very lucky to have received a TF300T (with dock) for Christmas, it's a wonderful device and I have been having a lot of fun with it. I'm pretty familiar with Android devices in general, and have enjoyed rooting / romming / overclocking and otherwise tweaking my devices to various degrees to get the best combination of performance and stability out of them.
So my first step with the TF300 out of the box was to set it to charge and browse xda/rootzwiki/etc and read up on the device. Once it was charged I went to work unlocking the bootloader, installing CWR, root, CM10. This all went off fairly smooth after realizing I had to do the OTA update to JB so the boot partition would be resized correctly to support CM10.
All that nonsense aside, I am now happily running rooted CM10 on my TF300 but I have a few questions I was hoping the community could help me out with.
1. NVFlash. Seems like an awesome failsafe, is it really possible to brick your tablet that bad that fastboot isn't available? how does that happen? is it worth (possible?) attempting to backrev my device to an ICS build so that I can create my NVFlash files?
2. Stock vs CM? have any of you tried both? which roms appear to perform the best? I ask because I notice there aren't really any custom Kernels that I've found that will work for CM? only for stock, and CM tops out the OC at 1.3 where others top at 1.6-1.8 and I have noticed some sluggishness here and there.
3. NVidia specific tweaks. I noticed a few build.prop tweaks in a post in development, are there any other NVidia specific tweaks that can be done to eek out the last drop of performance for gaming and such?
Any other tips, tweaks, or tricks you have used or recommend would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!
I would recommend using TWRP for recovery. Many have had issues with CWM, including me.
As for stock or CM, I'm running Paranoid Android v2.54. It is based on CM 10. I love it because of all the extra options. There is also a modified Unter kernel in the PA thread that allows overclocking up to 1.7GHz.
It is one of the most stable ROMs available. Since flashing, I have had no issues except for GPS. There is a fix but it must be applied after each reboot.
There is a newer version of PA but it is still a beta.

You're welcome. I just wanted to add that I also have a dock and it works great with the ROM. Several of the other custom ROMs have issues with the dock.

1) sdbags would like a new name for JB 4.2.1 base so he called cromix and cleanrom or just cromi is for JB 4.1.1 base. The cromix is up to date and it will have more features than the old one, but the tweaks should be about the same.
2) In theory, Odex and deodex should be about the same in performance, but in real life, many ppl swore that Odex is definitely smoother. Finally yes, deodex can be themed eaiser than odex, but for the normal end users, we don't care about this too much.
thank you buhohitr

You must use twrp for sure. The two best ROMS out there are cyanogen mod and CROMIX. Also Hundsbuah's kernel for CROMIX is excellent. Pimp my ROM is a good app for modding but only use it on cyanogen or CROMIX.

LOL! Really.
Cromi-X is the easiest recommendation on your to-do list, and Pimp My ROM really does neat things when using in conjunction with lucius.zen's excellent tweaking guide. pjc21 has some great color modifications out there for CROMI(-X) that are really worth tryig out.
And as Tylorw has already put forward -- use Goo Manager to install TWRP and make absolutely sure that you have the latest version! -- as we speak, that'd be 2.5.0.0 -- because CWM seems to have some trouble handling Android versions of 4.2.x properly and may brick your new toy.

I've seen a lively discussion in here somewhere (probably the CROMI thread) in which our guru _that delivered the coup de grace to the ODEX/DEODEX myth -- it only matters insofar as you want to tweak and modify (specifically: theme). Once booted, the same code is run by both versions -- the boot of one of them (I believe DEODEX, but I may be 100% wrong there) takes longer because the code to be run has to be generated first. As in the end it doesn't matter -- and since I have theming options available for both versions due to pjc21's efforts -- I run whatever version comes out first. As long as you do not clean the caches and reboot, there's no speed difference except for placebo.

CROMi will make the device what it is supposed to be. Had mine for 6 months before taking the leap and I wish I had not waited so long, especially given I have extended coverage through best buy, thus making a bricked device covered via insurance. On that note, it may be worth it to look into some type of supplemental coverage for a safety net in case (heaven forbid) something does happen. However, should you choose not to, I have been researching this stuff and reading up on the thread daily (and almost everything on the 3.x thread) for the last 2 months and I have just recently for the first time seen a post about someone possibly bricking their device. Im pretty sure it was because they did not have the right version of TWRP. This speaks milestones to the quality of dev that SDBags (CROMi dev) is. The ROM is stable and fast, and if you follow his instructions vigilantly, you will most likely unlock the true potential of the TF700 and be even happier. Good luck!
Edit: As far as Kernels go, I have seen mixed things about Hunds, if I were you I would go with the stock based kernel by _that2 (as in version 2) and run that for a few days before you decide if you wanna make any kernel tweaks. His is the most stable. Afterwards, you can dirty flash over if you want to switch kernels, just wipe dalvik and cache (not factory reset) when done.
And stick with the stock launcher

There is no need to wipe anything when changing kernels, it's just wasted time.

possible to deodex?

can anybody tell me if we can deodex our rom now that we have root? doesnt matter if it is using a pc or from within
I am pretty sure yes, although I could be wrong. Don't see why not though, you now have root level rights, and thus can deodex them. If you can read them, you can copy them. Good luck! I will try it out later too, and if anything goes wrong, no real harm done. Just reflash.
But why do you want to deodex? On average an odexed rooms is 10% faster then an deodexed rom. The reason behind having a deodexed rom is for theming purposes.

I also read (somewhere) that when MM rolls out, the need for Odexing is completely gone.

Ive never seen which one is faster... I'll take ure word but I was under the impression that deodex in general is better? I know the main reason is to theme tho
Here is a good explanation. Deodexed is only good theming and modding but any good dev such as my self can work with an odexed system.
When I was actively developing Roms I would do both and they where identical in features and theming. Sometimes I offered to the public both but sometimes I would just order the deodexed version for the ease of theming back in the day and keep the odexed version for my self. I even have a script floating around that can odex your system after you flashed your ROM, mods, and themes.
Now with xposed and the right set of modules there no need to flash a theme like you did back in the day when it would replace the apk. So there is no need for a deodexed system.
