Music playback causes huge battery drain?! - Nexus S Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Over time I noticed that playing music drains the battery like crazy. Is that normal? Just listening to music at moderate volume with in ears kills my battery. 2 hours really take it down massively. Are they fixes for this? I usually listens to flac files, occasionaly mp3's.
This occurs regardless of the ROM. Also I usually use PowerAmp, but I'm pretty sure the Google Music app drains my battery just as much.

I've noticed this too..only post 4.x

It's due to a mediaserver bug, I'm not sure about the details but the mediaserver is responsible for music playback among other things and it can get stuck in a loop while processing a file or album art causing massive drain, you should search the xda threads, there are already other threads discussing this problem

i face this problem too for me skype makes this. if you use skype just do not use it. until you reboot your phone media server will not stop.

PowerAMP causing 100% CPU use?

I'm using PowerAMP 1.0 and it's causing 100% CPU use and choppy playback on my HTC Evo when playing back MP3 files.
The first 30 seconds or so are fine but then CPU use jumps up to 100% and stays there, even after running a task killer. It only happens with this program running, is there anything I should do to try to fix this? I really like this audio player interface I just wish it wasn't so buggy!
No wonder my EVO has been acting up since i put that on there
PowerAMP shouldn't behave like this.
Please try to get some app which shows processes cpu consumption and find the process which high %.
Also, what is your ROM, any custom one?
No such issues here, I see 3-7% CPU utilization playing oggs and mp3's.
No issues with PowerAMP here, uses 2.3% of CPU while playing mp3's.

Haven't had any CPU issues but my PowerAMP has been acting up! It'll be playing then all of a sudden it won't read any of my files. SAying too many failed files and it'll skip thru a few then just stops. It's wierd, I had uninstall and re-install.
I'm having a similar issue with an HTC Hero running Cyanogenmod 6.1. It'll play fine sometimes, but other times my phone locks up pretty good with choppy music, so much that I can't even see the loads for individual processes. This only happens when using PowerAMP.
Also, when it IS working, PowerAMP CPU usage varies between 20%-70%, with it typically 29%-39%. Key point is that this is playing WMA files. I haven't tried MP3s yet.
I do notice high cpu with PowerAmp as watchdog told me.
30%~50% cpu while playing eaac+(m4a)

Try mp3 and see if you see more like 5-10%? If so, it must be codec specific.
I dont know why, but poweramp for me was getting really choppy, causing the cpu to spike and audio would skip when going for a run with GPS apps in the background. I've switched back to doubletwist and its smooth again.

[Q] Why do all music players but PowerAmp keep the phone awake

I noticed that all the music players I have tried (MIUI, stock, stock 3.0, mixzing, winamp, cube) are one of the, if not the, most battery consuming apps at the end of the day. It seems that each of these apps keep the phone awake for the entire time they are playing music, at least that's what it says when I click on the music app under "Battery Stats". I was ready to resign myself to the fact that no one has quite figure out how to play music without burning through battery until I tried PowerAmp.
It seems that PowerAmp does not keep the phone awake, according to battery stats, and while running it barely appears in the top 6 list of battery consumers. Does anyone know of other music apps that do this? Or an even better question, does anyone know how PowerAmp does this and why the other apps can't?
Poweramp & battery
This is my first post on XDA and on forums in general. I listen to music all day at work and cannot get to the end of the day without my battery being almost empty. So I trawled through various forums to find out why this might be, then used the battery use built into gingerbread. Noticed my phone stayed awake for an extended period even when the screen was off. Did a few tests, and indeed the culprit was the built-in music player. Found this post and thought I'd give Poweramp a try, not expecting too much. But you are completely right, playing music now for ~10mins, screen off, and phone has not been awake!
Buying Poweramp right now!

Google Music Bluetooth issues?

does anyone have weird issues with Google Music and Bluetooth audio? I have my phone paired with my cars BT system and sometimes, even though I'm not playing any BT audio, I'll take my phone out of sleep and the lock screen will show an album cover from my Google music.. even though no music is playing over BT.. any ideas?
Thanks, just got my Nexus and I'm loving it so far

Same thing happens to me. It's because Play Music doesn't actually shut down when you close it , but rather stays running in the background somehow, even though it's listed as inactive on app manager. To close it completely, you have to kill it.

[Q] Google Play Music battery drain

Hi I have been using Google Play Music as my music player and I noticed that when playing music the phone never goes into deep sleep which causes my battery to drain quickly. I usually listen to offline music downloaded from Google Play. I have tried wiping and reflashing both stock and Paranoid Android Beta 4 and they both have the same problem so I was wondering if the Play Music app is supposed to be like this? Thanks!
I mean if its playing why would it go to deep sleep when there is an app playing. I cud be wrong

You're not wrong.
It will stay awake but the CPU can go into low power operation. With the screen off, listening to MP3s with headphones plugged in should use minimal battery.

Question Massive drain with music apps like YouTube music and spotify

Is anyone having battery drain issue with music streaming apps?
The screenshots are with like 30min of music playing.
I'm using Bluetooth buds and the eu ROM
Seems about par for the course for streaming music and using Bluetooth. Phone can't sleep and Bluetooth does uses a decent bit of battery.
No way this is correct, almost no screen power consumption
