I decided I really missed having a car home app when connected to my car. I never found one I liked in the market, so I decided to see if I could get the Google one to work.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Download the latest Gingerbread GApps package from Goo.im (HERE)
2. Extract it to your SD Card.
3. Go to /system/app of the extracted zip and copy CarHomeGoogle.apk somewhere you will remember on your SD Card(I keep all of my mods/roms in a folder named "FLASH")
4. Copy CarHomeGoogle.apk to /system/app on the phone.
5. Change permissions to rw- r-- r--
6. Reboot & Set up to your liking.
NOTES
Save the apk where you can find it. You will have to perform steps 4 - 6 every time you flash. This includes the setup.
I haven't tried restoring with Titanium Backup, that may work as well. <-- If you backup/restore with Titanium Backup, all your settings are saved and you don't have to reboot.
Selecting the notification to exit car mode doesn't work, you have to use the button in the app.
Confirmed working on CyanogenMod 10 Official Nightlies & ParanoidAndroid 2.52
This should work on any rom. Let me know if it does/doesn't and I'll update the OP.

What does google car home do? I'm interested, but curious on what it does

It's a launcher for using in your car. You can set it up to launch automatically when connected to certain bluetooth devices (like your car stereo).
It has 4 screens with 6 buttons on each screen. All of the buttons are programmable to launch apps or direct dial your contacts.
All of the icons are colorized to a single color for easy visibility. You pick the color in settings (Default is white).
I should also note that using the notification to exit car mode doesn't work, you have to hit the button in the launcher to exit.

You should just upload the apk to make it easier for people . I was a huge fan of Google car home but my love for it has. been replaced with car home ultra

Does the CM10 dialer still lack a horizontal mode? That's what annoyed me about car home on CM - car home is a great horizontal app, but whenever someone calls the sideways CM dialer popped up.

I normally have mine mounted in portrait orientation, but I just checked for you.
EDIT: I just checked the in-call screen - it forces to portrait with the phone in landscape.

Interesting... I was looking for a Google or Samsung dock app when I first got my S3, but I never found one.... I finally stopped looking when I found CarHome Ultra.
Nice guide though!

+1. Car Home Ultra. Same as car home but on Steroids. Works great with I-Bolt dock.

Thanks for the guide. I've also been using Car Home Ultra since getting my SIII, but it's got a lot of features I don't use, and have missed the streamlined simplicity of the Google Car Home app.

When you are in the system/app folder select Mount R/W in the top right, then paste. Should work.

If on root explorer click the RW button at top of app. Don't know what the procedure is on other apps but they all have RW option.

As one of the guys said, you could have posted the apk itself, and save people some time.
But, thanks (I also hit the THANK you button..)
Working like a charm

Very useful... I'm still tweaked at the fact that they don't just keep supporting this app on newer roms. It was a great feature and really made it enjoyable when using my phone in my car

Car Home Ultra, all the way. I don't even look at my car's speedometer anymore.

You could also make a flashable zip for this to flash right after you flash a rom, or even just copy the apk into /system/app of the actual ROM zip you're flashing.

This was exactly what I was looking for. Thank you. I don't need all the junk found in those other apps. I just want the screen to darken and have 3-4 apps at my fingertips while driving and this fits the bill perfectly.

UPDATE: Updated to show all white keys where needed
Alright, so I was bored and feeling productive… as you see that is a good thing! I have redone the original Droid X multi touch keyboard to a better black version with a special Droid Eye style voice level meter (that works so well!) This version only has been tested on the Droid X 2.2 Deodexed Rom so feel free to test it for your own device – I will go ahead and tell you how to load this on your device below….
below....
GRAB BOTH Files HERE with other MODS
*UPDATED METHOD*
1. Download Zip from website above....
2. Place on SD Card of device
3. Boot into recovery (clockwork recovery or other custom recovery)
4. Install Zip from SD Card
5. Locate "WJDKeyboardMod.zip.zip" and click install
6. Reboot and ENJOY
-If that didn't work try this!
*The working way I done it requires you to grab “root explorer” via the market - or any other methods *
Grab APK from site above....
1. Grab Apk and Throw it on your SD Card
2. Open Root Explorer and navigate to /system/apps/
3. Rename LatinIME.apk to LatinIME.bak (this will back it up in case of any problems so you can revert back to stock)
4. Navigate to your SD Card via Root Explorer
5. Long press “DroidX_Multi_WJD.apk” and click copy
6. Navigate back to /system/apps/ via Root Explorer
7. Rename “DroidX_Multi_WJD.apk” to “LatinIME.apk” then reboot or power cycle your device
8. When device loads open Root Explorer
9. Navigate to /system/apps/
10. Tap “LatinIME.apk and click install
11. Once installed go to your devices “settings” then to “Language & Keyboard
12. Check the box next to “Multi-touch Keyboard” and make sure that is the selected input method
13. Enjoy
*Some multi touch keyboards floating around are not done well - you will notice the "&" symbol on most are "&" instead and float of the key - this and many other incorrect coding - so I fixed it up in this one and made sure all the keys were correct woohoo*
awesome job on the keyboard, thanks! swype is my primary but i d/l this for use in terminal emulator etc.
btw, what theme are you using? it looks like a black version of vanilla android
That is pretty awesome! Can you skin one with more transparent keys?
This is very nice. Thanks for contribution.
Ok, I used terminal emulator to mount the system rw then I renamed LatinIME.apk to .bak, then copied the new LatinIME.apk into the system/app/ directory, rebooted, was unable to install from Astro (don't have root explorer, no money right now), it only gives me the option to uninstall. Help please.
Alright guys - updated new easier method - enjoy the KB - I can't currently customize the KB for anyone right now since this is actually part of a ROM I am currently in the works with but as you can see from my slight contributions, I am legit and wanted to get that out - since we all know I don't want to J$#% yah lol
Wanted to spread the love
installed, i am quite impressed. thanks for the contribution, i love it!
WJDDesigns Modified Keyboard
Installed they keyboard. Very nice look. Especially like the droid “eye” mic input with sound level.
Kudos to WJDDesigns!

This maybe just the screen your on - try holding down the menu button while on homescreen - this will show trans on both landscape and portrait - some screens bring up a white bg to the keyboard so it isn't trans and I would have to edit those apps as well....

Ok, your right. I was testing in the browser, assumed if it worked anywhere it would be there, lol. Tested again in the notepad widget and it's all good.
Any chance of an identical (or as close as possible) theme for swype? Like a lot, swype is my primary keyboard.

[WORKING] Acer Liquid Home/Lock (updated w/ pics)

So I can across the system dump for the Acer Liquid and I was intrigued by the UI, it's truly one of a kind for android. I went ahead and pulled the main apks from the /system/app in the dump and installed them on my Epic, and what do you know they worked!
Getting It To Work
To get to work simply copy the attached apks to somewhere on your sdcard, and install them with your favorite file manager. Then click the home soft key and select the "Home" launcher (com.acer.android.breeze.launcher).
Note: I would recommend installing the launcher first, before installing Nemo Player, though it shouldn't mater. Just make sure you have both for increased performance.
What Works...
All functions of the launcher work to my knowledge, except for changing the background (long press on the "lock screen"), which force closes and reloads the launcher.
All soft keys also work as what they do normally.
A swipe to the left pulls up your recent app history, and a slide to the right pulls up your media.
Quick launch icons at the bottom work, and a swipe up brings up the launcher for all your apps, similar to the samsung launcher. (Slide right and left, not up and down.)

How do we get SMS, Email notifications?
Trying to download this from my phone but it keeps saying that the content is not supported.
Hey, this is pretty cool. Works on my Evo too. Download Sms pop up so you'll be able to see when your texts come in. Needs some work, but its still really cool. The UI was done very different but very well.
Its just a cool concept for a launcher I thought, and just excuse the name of the download it added another .apk for some reason but it works the same as any other install. You have to put these files onto the sdcard to install it, you cant do it directly from the phone, and also dont rename the files.

ya.... i want to see a screen of the launcher
not for sure but imma guess this?
-FOR THE SETTINGS AND WALLPAPERS TO WORK YOU HAVE TWO WAYS OF MAKING IT WORK
1) you have to push system/media/wallpaper and system/media/AcerDatabases into the system media folder.
which you can download it here both files http://www.4shared.com/file/X_tZG5Ms/Acer_Database_and_Wallpapers.html
2) you can manually download the original wallpapers from this phone from here,
http://www.4shared.com/file/X_tZG5Ms/Acer_Database_and_Wallpapers.html
and after you download the wallpapers you have to open it and drag it & save it to your SD Card.
When your done doing that you have to go back to your homescreen and open on your menu and open the "Gallery application" that came with your phone. after you open your "gallery app" go to folder or wallpapers that you saved on your sd card, (which the gallery app will read from your sd card when you open the application) , and open any wallpaper image and when you see the full image , just go to your options and SET IT AS A WALLPAPER, when your phone is done setting the wallpaper just go back to your homescreen and and go back to your application menu and look in your menu for a application call "HOME DECOR" , (this application automatic install when you download the home launcher), open it and it will no longer force close anymore, Now u can even go back to your homescreen and just long press the screen (like you would do to open a widget) and it will no longer force closes, now you can change your wallpapers and settings.
sorry but you have to manually set up each wallpaper from your gallery app, it wont let you do it from the "HOME DECOR" app cuz it wont recognize it, unless you do the FIRST STEP, But this is the only ways i got it to work.
hahaha came here trolling around cuz someone said the epic sms app is different from the tmo vibrant but found this. works awesome, thanks bud.
Is this from Acer's newest dump?I found ver 1.0 on Mobilism.org but it came from "Acer Liquid Stream" system dump,is that another version of Liquid or same as original?
Big Thanx, everything is working now even "long press" on lockscreen.I went to wallpapers and "set as wallpaper" set a wallpaper and now long press on lockscreen and acer settings no longer fc!Now if only acer smoothen this up a bit but im still gonna use it as my eveyday launcher.

did you delete the previous one? what I usually do is change the one in the system already is add an .bak at the end of .apk (vending.apk.bak) as to keep it there for a back up and make sure when you move over the other one make sure to correct permissions. Not sure if you tried that yet but if not, give it a go and it should do the trick.
Also when you move it over, do you have system as rewritable? (obviously you need to be rooted to so ) if you are make sure that you gave permission on the file explorer that your using. If all that fails, I can make one for you if you like.
Z
I saved original apk on my SD-card and replaced it in /system/app with the black themed one with root explorer and rebootet and fixed permissions, but always the original market opens again, though there is no apk in /system/app. cant explain that

what you do, is go in to the app ( as if you were going to uninstall it ) and then stop , clear cache, clear data, swap out the apk and reboot in recovery wipe/ clear delvic/cache and that should do the trick . happened to me once before and got it to work that way.
Z
I normally replace the apk files in the ROM prior to flash.
Had no problem with Gmail, Drive, Youtube. But try as I can, just cannot get "Talk" to work.
Since I replace apks before flashing ROMS, I cannot use the one from Jules as that require a flash and a flash of "Part 2" as well. It does work that way, but not if I replace the original talk.apk with the one from his 1st zip file or 2nd.
The one by bradman117, just refuse to work for me ... whatever way I try, including flashing it separately.
Anyone know of any other "Talk" versions available that has full functionality?
Thanks

Because it was updated before you replaced it, so there's an apk (it might be called Phonesky, or Play depending) in data/app of the white market which overrides the one in system/app. You need to remove that one as well for the inverted app to show up.

Ive seen a couple of ICS based , inverted or what you ever wish to call it but it does break mms. Other then that, it looks great! Trust me, your not the only one searching for this, I've been at it for 4 weeks and have yet to find one that does not make phone loop ( on boot ) or one that will actually send mms along w/ regular text. Please if anybody has any info, please chime in , it would be greatly appreciated!!

AOSP Google Dialer and People apps

Hi Everyone,
if anyone is interested, you can get both aosp google dialer and people app to work on the G3. Here's how:
1. Download the zip
2. extract the files to your phone (sd card)
3. with a root explorer, copy them over to system/
4. set proper permissions (644) on both files
5. copy these files over to system/priv-app/ from system/
6. rename LGContacts.apk to LGContacts.apk.bak (or change the extension of the file to anything)
Blacked out dialer and contacts app - thanks for the findings, @Kameirus
The blacked out Google dialer is made by Thyrus here at XDA
And not sure who did the blacked out contacts/people apk..I found it in one of my phone modding folders
Install instructions are the same as above.

Same here no go
Hope someone figures it out
thats an easy fix..will look into it later on..im still using the same apks from my old n5
Did you guys use the files I provided? Did you rename it? The LGcontacts app to have different extension? It's important because it has the same package name as Google contacts and therefore Google 's contacts app won't show up.

Well, thanks but I didn't need that and checked on stock launcher and they do show up both... Is it possible that it's due to different system languages? U can also try to rename the extension of the LG phone up (dialer), see if that works.

would not advise to rename lg phone app, as I did and got into an endless "com.android.phone" process stop. contacts app works though but phone app does not show on stock launcher.

U need a deodexed Google dialer app.
Just install the google dialer with proper permissions and then hide the LG phone app in your drawer. Did this a week ago cause I missed my dialer from running PA on my G2. Also OP is that the 4.4.4 dialer? Cause android police had the older dialer up when I downloaded it. Had to rip the one outta the PA G2 rom I ran on my G2.
Also I am using nova launcher an do not have to create a shortcut. Just put the icon on my home screen and it opens up just fine.

So does this work? I got the Google dialer installed a few weeks ago but frankly hated it, could never get it to do what I wanted. Long press a contact to edit? No go. Plus all it did was launch the LG dialer in the end. If this fully replaces the LG dialer I Amy give it another try.
Phone shortcut didn't appear in the drawer for me, but I was able to add it to the stock launcher with "Activity Launcher" from the play store.
In the app, All activities -> Google dialer -> Phone (DialtactsActivity)

would not advise to rename lg phone app, as I did and got into an endless "com.android.phone" process stop. contacts app works though but phone app does not show on stock launcher.

Any chance you got out of the infinite bootloop without having to flash the stock ROM? If you did let me know how. Thanks!

Yes, and it was a nightmare, took about 20 min. Reboot phone, and with one hand keep hiring the Ok button of the error message and with the other hand try navigating the menus one by one. Go to system /priv-app/.
Find LG phone app, lgteleservice or something like that, click it, install it, then I used room toolbox pro to convert it to user app and set permissions 644. Reboot and got out of loop. And then quickly renamed back the apk.
All the best and good luck.
This worked for me! All works good!!! I had some activities widget already on my F400s and it let me add the dialer.
Looks same as my Nexus 5 now! And finally got rid of the Korean on the stock dialer.
Happy! Thanks to the OP!

You're welcome!

Bixby and New TouchWiz Home

I found a thing. On apkmirror I saw that the S8's apps were being extracts. Two of those being the new touchwiz home and Bixby Hello. So here is a guide for it.
1. download Bixby Hello apk and touchwiz home apk. (linked below)
2. Install touchwiz home and Bixby
3. swipe to the left to activate Bixby (where google now cards or flipboard would be)
4. Enjoy both.
5. You may need to clear the Touchwiz Home App Data if it is crashing.
If that doesnt work try, this:
If it isnt showing up there, download this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.szalkowski.activitylauncher) and click all activites on the top then look for Hello Bixby, after that click on Hello Bixby com.samsung.android.app.spage.main.MainActivity.
Just so everybody knows the voice commands for Bixby do not work. I will keep updating everyone on this as we go along. Enjoy.

Edit: Here is the link to the new weather app. It allows that weather widget from the S8 also. You need both for it to work.

You know where google now launcher google cards would be. Its there. On that page. Bixby there just has some cards and shows Samsung Health. I have to wait to get my S8 for a full Bixby port. But it is there. If it isnt showing up there, download this (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.szalkowski.activitylauncher) and click all activites on the top then look for Hello Bixby, after that click on Hello Bixby com.samsung.android.app.spage.main.MainActivity.
After install...reboot let's it show by swipe.

No big deal getting the 8 anyways i'll wait till then.. thanks
LOVE the new TW, and Bixby has far more stuff I actually want to see!
I have the soft keys working and disabled all the original keys and lights. It's weird though because they are black all the time. I'm trying to figure out how to get them to change with screen color changes but I'm not having to much luck as of yet. If anyone knows what file to edit or change for the soft keys to change the appropriate colors for black/white pages please let me know, thanks. To get the soft keys to appear and working you need root and you have to edit a build.prop line.
qemu.hw.mainkeys=0
On my device the line was already there but it was a 1 and I had to change it to 0 to enable.

You need to be in Nougat.
Why is it not working on s6 with Nougat ?
Quick question has anyone tried thus on the flat t mobile s7 flat?
Also do you just install normally or place them in the right place with a root file explorer at?
Would appreciate the help. Thanks in advance.

Yes I've seen people that have it on the flat S7. You can install it like a normal APK file or what I do is make a folder in /device/system/priv-app then place the APK file in that folder. Then you have to set the permissions of the folder to rwx-r-x-r-x and then set permissions for the apk file in the folder to rw-r-r then reboot. After reboot if it doesn't boot on that launcher go into settings/applications then settings in there then default apps and set the new TW home as default.
