Apps randomly starting in the background?

I use advanced task killer and minutes later I see MP3 Store, and Messages running. Before I saw a few others. Are they set to start running in memory for some reason? Not sure if they eat up much juice, but I wonder if I can make a list of certain ones and disable their start up somehow. Is there a task killter that blocks startups?

same here we need something to block these apps

Messages is required to recieve MMS (Even if you use handcent or chomp or something else as your main client). We tried removing that once in the hero forums and it caused ALL sorts of problems and force closes)
The mp3 store is usually ok to remove though.

Do you know that setting in advance task killer is that says "auto kill level"? It is set to disable now, but what does it do? Thanks.

I'm not sure...I avoid task killers as a rule (I installed one earlier to test something for an earlier thread and uninstalled afterwards once I got my info).

The better solution, especially for apps that you don't intend on using, is uninstalling the app (there's a whole thread talking about which ones are safe to remove).

yeah, that is a great idea. I imagine if I wanted it back I could just install it again. Thanks Codemonk.

Why do you need those apps not running? Android will kill them if it needs more memory.
Why are people obsessed with killing stuff? It's not like your phone runs better with 192mb of free memory vs 163mb...

it actually does, as well as lets the battery last longer since it isnt using as much processing power

Let the phone run for a good 12 hours. I was down to 42MB free basically idling and only using Handcent. Killed a few tasks and back up to 175 and everything is snappy again.
I don't like having to use a task killer, I didn't have to with my N1.

maybe there will be an app like Scotty for windows 7. I check and a bunch of bloatware starts on it's own. It's all marketing bs. When there is a nice root stripped down, with all the nice stuff enabled I'll do that.

So if I leave it to no apps, will it load up with 0 apps running? Will it also prevent apps from randomly starting after phone is already on? Sounds like a nice app.

Unless startup auditor disables the service there is a list of apps that will randomly start up at times. I went into the application settings and apps like MP3 store don't have an option to uninstall.
I have used task killer to kill all apps and within minutes some start again.
"thecodemonk" why do you not use a task killer. I have only had an Android phone about 24 hours now and got a lot to learn.
First thing being how to enable tethering.

I have mine set to "safe" and it auto closes things when screen goes black.
Make sure you "IGNORE" certain apps... like the clock or else your alarm wont work... I almost over slept
I have the following set to ignore:
Messages
Handcent
clock
gmail
Mort Music player
Fastbright

Check out the application "Autokiller." This comes with preset values (optimum, moderate, aggressive, etc.) so that apps will be killed off once your free memory drops below a certain point. This app works great, but it does REQUIRE root to function and must be rebooted to finish applying the settings. Also lists all apps, processes, and services which can be killed off manually as well.

It is in market, search "autokiller". Requires root access, but I can confirm it is working fine.
Wanted to add that I am annoyed by programs that I never intend to use running in the background. From recovery I used Android Commander to quickly select and delete every .apk in /system/app that I never wanted to see again.

Helo guys saw this topic and was over at androidcentral and saw this article which talks about an app that would kill any app that autostarts.
won't let me post links as i'm a new user, but go to androidcentral and look for the article about the app autostarts or just google "autostarts"

using task panel to kill the "junk" like amazon and mp3 store- also any program that doesnt attach itself to things like facebook or messages - i use skyfire so i have set that to autokill but leave the "internet" running..
i also use this to switch between apps running.. having to hit back back back or even going to home then program list then finding it is a long process.. for example ...
i get a handcent message - go into the threaded sms- type and im done - holding down the home screen doesnt pop all the programs up - therfor i set task panel up to stay on my status bar and hit it then go to the program i want.

[Q] Removing apps from Playstore's 'My Apps'??

I'm a bit confused over the relationship between the apps in the playstore's 'My Apps' list and those apps I have actually installed. I assume the apps in Playstore's 'My Apps' list is simply what I have and had ever installed in current and previous phones. Now I want to have a clean out of 'My Apps'.
I want to remove quiet a few applications from 'My Apps' list (a sort of spring clean, not just un-install them from my phone) and its a slow frustrating process doing it from my phone within the play store app. Every time I delete an app from the phones playstore 'My Apps' list I'm brought back to the top of the list and I have to patiently scroll down to where I had left off, and its now even alphabetical sorted. I used to be able to do this more easily from my PC by browsing all my android apps and clicking on the little trash can icon embedded on the app icon. But now this has been removed!!
Google why are you making this more difficult than it need be or used to be?????? :crying: in frustration.
Does anyone know how you can easily drop apps from your phone and the Playstore 'My Apps' list without going mad?

I don't believe there is an easier way. You could start at the bottom and work your way to the top. I know how frustrating it is.

Aha got my answer from another forum called Phandroid. Thanks to the guys there, its actually really easy. All you have to do on your mobile is go into your 'All' tab in your 'My apps' within the playstore app and long press on the non-greyed out apps. You can multi-select and then delete mulitple apps, cleans out all the installation history. Brilliant, not too obvious though!

I've read that it's not necessary to use a task manager and kill processes/programmes as Android manages itself fine.
But what about sliding out the recent apps list? What does it do and is it good/bad doing it?
Don't know if it matters but I've got Android 4.4.4.

The recent apps is a way of multitasking on Android devices, this new feature was introduced in Honeycomb and was later improved in newer Android versions.
The purpose of this said feature as said before is to help a user multitask. So if you're browsing the internet and have a specific page up. A minute or so later you get a message so you open the messaging app and make a reply. But now you want to go back to the same app you were one earlier without having to restart, reload or wait for the content to appear.
When sliding a specific app (task) from the recent apps menu, you're basically killing the app. (Removing it from the multitasking menu, it reduces ram consumption as the process for that app has now been shut down or limited. For example if you kill a messaging app, it runs a background service so you can receive messages. When you have the app open or running in the background it opens a new process, when you slide the app away you're removing the background process for it but you're not disabling the server process. (So you will still get messages).
In short form, when you slide an app away from the recent menu, you're killing the apps process. This is good when you don't need or you are not using the app. So if you have you don't need to multitask with a specific app, remove it from the menu and it'll restore ram so it speeds up your device.

Can't find the default apps list in Android 5.1.1

Normally I almost never pick a default app because I have several browsers and when I click a link somewhere I like to choose what browser I want to load it up with each time. But now I upgraded to 5.1.1 and after I selected the browser the first time now it auto has become the default browser and I have not found any way of fixing it. I think once I was able to do it from the applications menu, then something changed with an update and I had to do it from the recent tasks window, or the other way around. But now I cannot find any list of default apps or setting to prevent apps from automatically becoming default upon first being selected to perform some option.
Am I missing something here? Google isn't likely to just remove a crucial aspect of the OS, so it's probably me. If you know I'd appreciate it.

You can use it to change default apps.
Make sure that when you select the browser you want to use (I strongly recommend Google Chrome) that instead of pressing the big icon, you press the only once button below it.

This is what I always normally do, as I never actually pick a default. But since the 5.1.1 update I do not even see the option. As soon as I press the app I want to open the thing up with it vanishes and always uses that app from now on. I cannot find the built in default apps list. Apps are all fine and good but where is the built in and why can't I press to use an app once?

Easiest way to get rid of System apps on Miui

So, it's a well known fact that a lot of us hate miui mostly because of the number of bloatwares it comes with. While we can easily uninstall the third party bloatwares, but the problem comes in when it comes to system apps. We can't simply uninstall them, neither can we disable them (surprisingly miui doesn't show any disbale option or even if it's there, it's already greyed out). So, we need to either root our device to easily uninstall them or need to use a bit more complex ADB method.
So, today I will share an easy but tricky way to disable any system app. It has two advantages over ADB debloat method or root method. First, you don't need to be technically sound. Second, you can revert them back in just one tap if you feel so.
So just follow the below steps to disable any system apps in miui.
1. Open Google Play Store
2. Go to the top left menu option
3. Scroll down and click on "Help & feedback"
4. Now click on "Browse all articles"
5. Now locate "Delete or disable apps on android"
6. Click on it and then click on "Tap to go to application settings"
7. Now you will be presented with all apps that are there on your device. Just tap on the app of your desire.
8. Click on "Disable" and voila! The app is disabled as long as you don't wish to enable it again.
I know some users will say it won't free up space as it will still be present on the device. That's partly true. While the app is still present on the device and still occupies space, but it won't add up any additional data and wont run in the background. I'm sure you know what happens when you disable an app. So, I don't want any argument which is better and blah blah!! Remember, this method is mainly for people who need a solution as simple as possible.
So, what are you waiting for? Go try it today! ?

Lol. You want some proof? I am using 9.1.24 myself and I have disabled Chrome and Gmail by this method. Plzz don't write negative comments if you cant follow the steps properly.
FYI: Sometimes you need to uninstall the updates first before disabling an app. That's how it is. It has nothing to do with miui.
For uninstalling updates, tap on the bottom "More" on the app setting page.

Dude, there's a reason why android doesn't let you disable certain apps. You can't call anything and everything as bloatwares. The app you are trying to disable is an essential part of miui and is responsible for the updates of system apps. Without this app, you won't be able to update any system apps. The same goes for Camera, Clock, Contacts, Dialer, Gallery, Messaging etc. It's not a fault of miui. That's how android works. Use your common sense!!

okay. u should update you op coz u mentioned we can disable any system apps. i have uninstalled "apps" before using root. for me Xiaomi Browser is bloatware too. I have used your instruction and failed to disable. common sense isn't so common.

no, that's not an "essential" part of the OS. The phone will still function perfectly well even if that app is disabled. please, quit your bs. this has nothing to do with how android works, miui doesn't let you disable it, that's all. it's upto your oem, android, by default will let you disable every single app, whether it breaks your phone or not.
