[Q] Question About Using Launchers, Specifically About Nova Launcher - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket SGH-I727

So from the amazing Google Play 25c deals I got Nova Launcher. I understand that CM9 uses something called Trebuchet launcher. Thing is when I press the home key, I have a choice between the 2 (and I can choose to make one of them default), and both work. But doesn't this use a lot more resources and stuff, even if I set Nova Launcher to default? I'm not replacing Trebuchet, I'm kind of overlaying Nova Launcher. So does any have any insight on this? Will I save up memory and possible other resources by removing my widgets and/or icons from my default homescreen (Trebuchet)?

Delete trebuchet from /system/app literally delete it problem solved

So if I make a backup, delete it, and then restore it later on, what does it save. Would it save my homescreens with the positions of all my icons and widgets? (not a big deal tbh but would be nice)

if your using tibu or rom toolbox you need to save data and app so it will save preferences but more then likely you will lose some info in the backup

Just to be clear, my backup, all I'm doing is renaming the apk file to .bak (and thus "deletes" it).

You can delete it, but I'd recommend keeping it in case nova crashes. Having a 2nd launcher installed could save you from having to go to download mode and wiping everything if something goes awry with the one you're using. I personally use nova, but keep trebuchet on my phone for this very reason because someone much smarter than myself recommended I do so. I haven't noticed any slowdown by having both installed.

Thanks a lot. I guess just in case, I'll delete my icons and widgets from my homescreens, I took screencaps of them anyways if I ever want to use it again.

Trebuchet is a memory hog. I'd recommend downloading something lightweight but functional, like Lightning Launcher or Nova's long-lost cousin Apex, as a backup instead, then backing up and deleting Trebuchet.

App that reloads all Widgets after full wipe!

When I do a full restore with TB, all of my widgets are replaced with the dreaded "Widget Missing" error. Some of my widgets take a bit of formatting so this is a REAL PAIN.
When you nandroid it saves all of your widgets and restores them. Why can't an app be written that does the same? Or can nandroid be configured to replace your homescreens just as they were even if you do a full wipe and flash a new rom?
I know launcher pro and adw both have settings to backup your homescreens. Works great as long as the apps are already installed.

But these will not reload your widgets, only their positions.

What does that have to do with this thread?
Thinking it is an OS restriction on Android.

I guess my point is that if Nandroid can save widgets, why can't we write an app that does the same? How does Nandroid save them? There must be a file somewhere that tells Android where to place your widgets. Where is it and how do we save it?

I think that settings are a part of Rosie.apk for Sense.....when we Nandroid, it takes a dump of the whole system and saves it.....Saving the settings of Rosie is a little more difficult and I think thats why we dont see multiple apps in the bottom Stock Rosie launcher as well
^ to my knowledge

Nandroid makes an image of various partitions on your phone. It's like taking the bag full of goodies instead of taking them out one by one.
Much less difficult than saving and restoring specific settings.
I restored using adw ex and it put my widgets right back in place. In a sense rom and cm 6.1.1.

You mean no little "Problem Loading Widget" placeholders? That alone would be reason to switch to adw ex.

Don't know which version of ADW Ex you are using but I just tested it and it does NOT reload your widgets. I had 4 widgets on my homescreen and every one got replaced by the "Problem Loading Widget" message.
Damn damn damn and I had such high hopes too. Grrrr.
Why the hell is this so hard?
Idk if this is what you mean. I use tb and after batch restoring apps I use batch restore system data but only select the sense desktop. This restores all widgets and shortcuts. For some reason it will overlay two copies of shortcuts/widgets on top of one another so drag the extra to trash. Is this what you meant?

This isn't an OS restriction. The real way to correct this is to make your default.xml located in /system/customize/MNS. This file is what presets your Scenes, widgets & shortcuts. I can easily remove things but I haven't figured out how to completely figure out how it all works. If someone does figure it out, let me know.
I too have the same issue as the OP... quite annoying since I flash every few days

Hiding icons

There any way to hide icons in the app menu so that you don't see them anymore? I've removed some carrier bloat but there's still some apps that i never use and can't delete that i'd like to hide.
Use a different launcher. GO Launcher, Launcherpro, ADW, etc. have options to do this. Touchwiz blows anyway.

Or just uninstall the app if you never use it?

this is on the wife's mes, she wants the portable hotspot gone. she's having a fit about it. Don't think there's a way to uninstall it and she refuses to use launcher pro. She doesn't like it for some reason.
I'm allready on launcher pro.

It's just an app and you said you already removed other system apps so I assume you are rooted. Shouldn't be an issue to remove this as well.

Freeze it using TitaniumBackup Pro?
Can't find it is the problem and don't want to mess up wireless in general.
Will freezing it hide the icon? I figured i could just hide it and tell her i uninstalled it and she'll be happy.

Here's an idea, tell your wife to quit whining over a damn icon and shut the **** up.

[Q] OK to freeze SE Home?

I've installed ADW launcher EX.
Am I ok to freeze SE Home or will it screw things up?
It's ok to freeze it.
As long as you already send adw as default.
Sent from my XPlay using XDA App.
Thank you.
not necessarily set something else by default coz the phone will auto-search for other installed launcher apps, it's safe for as long as a backup launcher is already installed or else you'll go into bootloop..
When you set adw to default, you can be sure that it's installed and working correctly first. I know it's not necessarily but it's definitely better to do so then not.

Is having 2 launchers installed detrimental to memory?
Will I save any ram by freezing SE home?

but why settle for 3rd party launchers? stock launcher with a little modification is sweet! ADW? LauncherPro? Neh.... all launchers i've seen on the market are not good..aesthetic- and performance-wise..

[Q] Delete ROM default launcher????

I've read what I've been able to find so far about replacing launchers and still little confused. If I download another launcher from the market can I then use TB to delete the launcher in the system folder? or do I actually have to replace the launcher in the system folder? I flashed Valhalla BlackEdition and can't read Chinese in the 360 launcher.
BTW I just don't want multiple launchers if I don't have to have them.
Simply place another launcher.apk in your system/app folder keep the 360 launcher until you have verified the other launcher works.

I hated 360launcher as well. Do what the post above recommends. If it's moved to the system, then it cannot be deleted... easily. Make sure it is a good launcher though- one that wont start force closing constantly. After you are sure that your launcher is installed any works, use a program, such as root uninstaller, to get rid of 360 launcher.
I got rid of it and it worked fine. Do not, I repeat, do not get rid of Amazon MP3, or any process related to it. It will cause random force closes, with no fix.

I use adw (only launcher installed on my phone)
and I deleted anything with Amazon in the name including mp3.
I have yet to experience any fc. So something else must of been causing your problem.
I'm running octane 3.0 (completely debloated of course) at the moment, but I was on Valhalla black before this.

Can you update us on that please?
Didi you rename the launcher or keep the original file name?
Considering that this thread had ALL its activity in January of 2012... I'm guessing what was done 20 months ago doesn't really matter that much to Shady anymore.

Delete apps widget?

Hey all not to sure if this is the right place I'm looking for widget that I can drag apps to so they will get deleted like recycle bin on windows any help would be great as my free Xperia rom don't do drag delete
Sent from my Xperia Go using xda app-developers app
Android just doesn't have a recycle bin type of delete system. There is a feature very similar to that in adw launcher though, where if you hold the icon of an app on long enough as if to move it around the screen, a small menu comes up with options to either remove it from your homescreen or uninstall it completely. The problem with using it is that you'll have to use adw launcher to completely replace the current homescreen you have. If that doesn't sound bad, go for it. It's extremely resource friendly. Used to use it on my crap old virgin mobile phone, and has tons of themes and icon sets to go with it.
Hope this helps.
I just made a shortcut to "app management" and can quickly uninstall from there
