[BRICK WARNING] TWRP loop brick by wipe-data on JB firmware - Asus Transformer TF700

Managed to brick up my tablet good, thought i'd describe the "symptoms" and what I was doing when it happened to prevent it happening again.
I was on:
Firmware: 10.4.4.16
Recovery: TWRP 2.2.2.0
Description:
I was attempting to get root, however TWRP does not work with the new firmware/bootloader version. I wanted to do a factory reset of my data, but TWRP would not let me. I booted into the bootloader menu (voldown + on) and selected data-wipe option. The tablet then rebooted into TWRP but nothing happened.
I have tried to reboot after this but it will not load Android, it just loops into TWRP recovery
I have tried to boot into fastboot, but It will not even load the bootloader menu, it just loops into TWRP recovery
I have tried to flash stock firmware using TWRP but it does not work because i'm running the crappy new firmware!
Anyone got any ideas? I think this one is for Asus :/

are you trying to flash ics or jb?
i would stick with jb at this point.
do you have any backups? one guy said he was able to restore cm10 with twrp.

and if you don't have a backup you can restore, you can always wait for the next version of twrp to be released and try flashing that first. you still have options!

did you activate NVFLASH? please tell me you did!
you can always jump back to the .26 stock bootloader (or TWRP/CWM if you had one of those installed at the time)
there is an unofficial 6.0.1.4 version of CWM Recovery posted and I used that no problem with Official JB to re-root after the update.
you do need fastboot access to install it though, so without NVFLASH and the ability to downgrade your bootloader... um... yeah, you're kinda borked. sorry.

No backups.. :/

Yeah hopefully they will release a flash able version... if only I could revert to the stock recovery through twrp

Boot into fastboot and try flashing the unofficial cwm recovery! If you have recovery, you should absolutely have fastboot. I would really recommend that you try to stay away from the official recovery since it isn't quite as "feature rich" as cwm/twrp... Good luck, have fun!
Sent from my ASUS Transformer Pad TF700T using xda premium
Edit. Woah, reading failure... are you completely sure you're doing it right? The new jb boot loader menu is different. You don't wait for a secondary menu, you just vol-down to select the USB icon then vol-up

Make that two. Same as you, tried to get root, wiped data, BRICK. Get TWRP each time, every time unless I hold VOL UP which of course goes to APX mode.
No fastboot, can't flash ROMs, tried the whole "dd if=/sdcard/blob /dev/block/mmcblk0p4" thing and it reboots the tablet automatically. Flashing a ROM gives "E:cannot mount /data".
"ls /dev/block" command from adb shell only shows /dev/block/mmcblk0p3 and /dev/block/loop0-9.
Bricked and bricked good!

Bugger. I'll give it a week then rma, I've still got adb through twrp..

ok do this, boot into TWRP, adb push my CWM recovery, dd if=cwm-recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p9, it should flash the CWM Recovery, or you can do it using via fastboot as well. Then flash the .30 zip, remember now .26, but only .30, wipe data, wipe cache, reboot

DId the dd command complete correctly?
Also try this:
1) download .30 blob from asus website
2) unzip it twice till you have a blob file
3) adb it to device
4) dd if=blob of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4
5) reboot and wait for the flash to complete.

I could provide you a flashable zip with the stock recovery, send me a PM if you are interested.

I've been having similar issues after installing JB woith recovery. I wanted to wipe data but glad I wasn't able to after reading this thread. I don't understand how some people have managed to upgrade and still seem to have full access to twrp

My understanding is that TWRP is *not* compatible with Jelly Bean! It may install, but it doesn't work right. Stay away....
I have been unable to get the "unofficial" CWM recovery installed at all - everything looks like it works during the install, but I still get the stock recovery. Strange...

Sure I'd give that a go. If anyone wants to go through the trouble of a clean install TWRP backup I'll try that too.

CWM recovery problems and how to install .img recovery files

Two questions:
1. How do i flash the new touch recovery without using rom manager (.img file from clockworkmod site)?
2. I installed the latest non touch recovery (with rom manager) but it's causing me problems. Every time i install a new rom I can't boot into recovery. I had to use LG flash tool to reinstall the stock v21e gingerbread and start all over again. Then i installed CM10 (which didnt work) and recovery didn't work again so i had to flash with LG flashtool again. Why is this happening?
With Cm10 I also had problem entering recovery, to enter recovery I've had to remove usb cable, then hold power button for 10sec( to have phone completely off) and then hold 3D+vold down+ power. Was releasing power when have backlight and holding buttons until entering recovery. Hope it will help. For me it works.

Have you tried an older recovery? I'm on CWM 5.0.2.0. Installed with Recovery Manager: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=23474089
The older recovery works fine, but that's not the point. I cant think of a single reason why is this happening with the newest version.
So does anyone know how to flash those .img files? Maybe from terminal emulator?

Yeah, you need to use Terminal emulator.
Instructions:
1. Put it on the root of the internal sdcard
2. Open Terminal App
3. Run :
Code:
su
Then
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/recovery.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p6 bs=4096
4. Reboot and now it would work !
^ Don't know why, but it didn't work for me. Maybe it's needed to install the regular non-touch recovery and then the touch one?
Edit: Nope, that wasn't it. Is CWM 6.0.1.9 for our phone broken? I can't get it to work whatever I try (Recovery Manager or flashing thru Terminal). So I got back to CWM 5.8.1.5 Touch.
I managed to get the latest recovery running. But as soon as I install another rom it stops working. Weird.

If you have any problems with ClockworkMod 6.0.1.9

You have the bootloader locked.

I'm going to recommend that you DO NOT use the dd method posted above. Its dangerous. If you were to type the wrong partition, you could very easily brick your device.
If you want to use an img, use heimdall to flash it, otherwise create a tar/tar.md5 and flash it with odin
Or use rom manager

[Q] Switch from CWM to TWRP ?

Hi all -
I have a bit of a problem, and was wondering if anyone could help. I am rooted of course, and I run [JUL13-Build80] Domination ( from Owain ).
I had CWM v5.0.2.0, but I like TWRP a lot so I decided to install TWRP ( latest version for LG-G2x ) via goo. Well what happened was, when I boot into recovery it still booted into CWM, but then I would click on reboot from CWM and it would then boot to TWRP. Well I could live with that...but... now I can not get back into TWRP at all. I can only get to CWM.
So my question is .... what to do. I would like to use TWRP as my recovery and not CWM. What should I do at this point ??
Thanks
Interesting problem. I am assuming you have tried flashing TWRP again to see if it solves the problem? Do you get any error messages?
Edit: I think you should try nvflash to load TWRP. That should fix it.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
If I may ask, what exactly is the difference between twrp and cwm?
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda app-developers app
It sounds like twrp got flashed to your boot partition.
If you uses something like
"dd" "if" "twrp-image" "of" "dev/block/mmcblk0p5" you wrote twrp to your boot partition. This phone has a protected recovery partition accessible only via NVflash. Flash a kernel or ROM, and use NVflash to flash the twrp image.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
There is a Modded version of NVflash somewhere in the g2x thread that has tarp in place of cwm. The OP is mustangtim. Ill see if I can find a link.
Here's the link to TWRP in our Devices forum. The link to mustangtims nvflash download is right under the install instructions. This modded NV flash is the only way I could get TWRP to work correctly on my device.

[Recovery][Unofficial]TWRP 2.7.0.0 & Clockwork Recovery Touch 6.0.4.4 W/loki (D800)
Clockwork recovery touch with Loki for AT&T LG G2 (D800) Only.
TWRP recovery touch with Loki for AT&T LG G2 (D800) Only.
The only difference between official recoveries and this version is that Loki is built in to recovery.
THIS IS ONLY FOR 10d FIRMWARE. IF YOU ARE ON 10o THEN DO NOT USE!!!
You may want to flash 10d firmware. It can be found HERE with instructions. If you plan on using ROMs it is best to flash 10d firmware first.
Install Methods
Flashable Zip - Must have TWRP or whatever custom recovery already installed.
Boot into recovery and flash Recovery Zip file.
Manual Method - With no custom recovery already installed.
Must have Root first. Check HERE for root
Download the zip file to which recovery you want
Extract zip file to C:\
Open command prompt in root of C drive
You will need adb installed and properly setup in your environment variables. If not place the recovery.img wherever your adb file is located.
Type the following commands:
Code:
adb push recovery.img /data/local/tmp/recovery.img
adb shell
su
cd /data/local/tmp
dd if=/data/local/tmp/recovery.img of=/dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/recovery
exit
exit
adb reboot recovery
Now you should be in recovery.

If you been flashing OEM modified ROMs on G2 the speed may have been due to the size of the ROMs.

Does this mount usb-otg? When I try "Mount USB Storage" nothing happens. I am pretty sure TWRP also does not yet support usb-otg. My hopes were CWM did.
Thanks
Adb side load is an alternative for Mount usb. Install Zip --> Install from adb sideload. Unfortunately this didn't work for me either. If it works for any of you guys please let me know the steps you followed. Sideload doesn't work in TWRP also.
In case of a soft brick either Mount usb or adb side load should help. Otherwise you have to go back to stock using Lg tools and start all over again.

I flashed this and seem to have a problem with formatting the cache- it just stops so I cannot wipe becuase it stops at formatting cache. Anybody else experienced this before? I flashed again with same results.
thanks,
AC
