[Poll] What is the best Anti-Theft + Find Phone App ? - Android General

Hello,
What is the best Anti Theft App or service to find lost phone that you used and can really depend on ?
please choose your answer and tell us your experience please.
Thanks.

Take a look at Cerberus and its features. I have yet to use it for a lost phone *knock on wood* features are great and so far all I've tried work just fine.

Well if you have unlimited data (or at least few gigs) i would say best one would be Cerberus.
But if you don't have that luxury then Wheres my Droid will do you just fine.
I'm using WMD and i've "lost" it 2 times and WMD found my phone close enough.

I took the avast anti theft out of avast mobile security and just use that, unlike wmd it is phone reset proof, it locks the sim card and it's become complete since they made a web-commander interface in last update. The only downside to it is that it only uses data and doesn't use wi-fi for localization (which can be considered a minor inconvinience since data is available anywhere while wifi needs the phone to be lost where there's a wifi connection available)

I'm with tt281gt and Hreidmar. For me it is Cerberus.

Kaspersky Mobile Security Lite is one of the best anti theft app.

+1 for cerberus

Cerberus

Cerberus, I guess... I have used Avast as well, but it wasn't that good so I've changed.

Is Cerberus trustable?

Lookout is pretty neat, accurate if your phone is on wifi or has GPS enabled (always enable GPS, ALWAYS) and it has a scream function. But the free version doesn't let you lock your phone or wipe data and stuff. As far as the others, I haven't tried yet other than this and Samsung Dive so no comment.

I like the remote video, picture, and audio recording capability...I've been using Avast but it does not have it. Lookout does not mention anything about snapping pic, audio, or video. Only thing is I've never heard of this company...not sure if it is trustable.

Been using avast on my pc, for years, and it has been reliable. So when it came to android, that was my first and only a choice. However having read some reviews on the play store, regarding avast, am a bit concerned, because most reviewers who have actually had theft of there devices have raised some concerns that avast is not good at all when one is tracking lost devices. So now not sure what to go for.

I recently tried avast, maybe after that I want to try cerberus.

Has anyone actually used any of these apps, to actually recover a lostor stolen phone, which i ccan only imagine is an extremely dreadful experience.?

avast! i think

I use Avast in about 7 smartphones of the family, I tried to locate the devices for quite some times (never in real theft or lost) and in about 95% of the time the detection was accurate, even that GPS, the Wifi and data connection was off, (Avast turn them himself when sending the command in SMS)
The only missing feature is the ability to take a picture of the thief, they already implemented it but they do not include it for some legal reason )
btw:

Best thieft and lost protection app

Hello ; )
Which thieft and lost protection application is currently the best? I'd like to buy soon a license and i'm wondering which one choose...
I know:
1. WaveSecure
2. Track&Protect
3. Lookout
4. MobileDefense
In my opinion the best is Track&Protect - it has almost all WaveSecure options + photo making and secret callback. But it's also more expensive if i'm going to use it(send a command) to phone more than one a month.
I'm waiting for your opinions and proposals..
Lookout is good and free. My personal favorite is GPS TRACKER and is free too
Sent from my SPH-D700 using Tapatalk
I would use tasker to automate tracking. It can do almost everything but you just need to spend some time with it.

THEFT AWARE hands down, no ?'s is the best app. dam program is unbeleivable.
I use mobile defense and its awesome for keeping tabs on your phone. You can even tell if someone tries to swap the sim card if your phone has one. Of course my Hero doesnt. I know 2 people that have had there phone stolen and using MD we have tracked it down in a few hours.
I use prey, its fantastic and saved my arse once already once..
If your phone is rooted Theft Aware creates an update zip that reinstalls itself if someone factory resets your phone. In my oppinion this is a must because otherwise any 14 year old can google how to wipe your phone, and then your precious GPS location software is rendered useless.

another vote for prey
i would vote prey but it only has sms activate and no activation from the web site.. not a big issue, I just would prefer to do it from the website also.. but it's free so who am i to complain?
I use lookout, I haven't had to use it yet but I have tested it and it seems to work fine.
this theft aware looks pretty good, will give it a go
i saw this one...if your phone is rooted it looks good http://www.androidpolice.com/2010/1...ion-weve-seen-to-date-really-hands-on-review/

[Q] Are you using an Antivirus/Anti-spyware app?

Do we need antivirus or anti-spyware apps on our devices? Are you currently using one? If so, which one do you use and would you recommend it for others?
I am not using it and dont see need for it but all my friends use it. They use Lookout app!!!!!!!!

I don't use one either. Never have

If you sideload apps from untrusted sources, it might be a good idea to have one. I've seen my bud get alerts installing apk's from newsgroups.
Look at the permissions, comments, the vendor.
Do not blindly download apps and you will never need Android Antivirus.
I've got Lookout as well, but only for the feature that allows you to find your phone incase you lose it. I figured, why not activate the antivirus feature, I doubt I'll ever need it though to be honest.
It's not like the Lookout antivirus program costs anything. So why not use it? Plus, as the poster above noted, you have the locate function ready if it gets lost.

I've used both AVG and Lookout. It never hurts to have an antivirus installed.
I'm using AVG like on my PC.
Never got any virus on my PC and don't want on my android phone.
I'm using Avast, but mostly because I use the Anti-Theft plug-in and also the Firewall, so it doesn't hurt to have the AV turned on as well.
If it weren't for the Anti-Theft and Firewall, I wouldn't be using one.
Avast has done a great job protecting my laptop, so I installed it on my phone.
Why not use an antivirus app? Well, battery drain, slower performance, and the fact that you probably don't need it are a few reasons.
If you're careful about apps you download you should never have an issue. My rule of thumb is not to download an app from the Market with fewer than 100,000 downloads, unless it's an app that I know is safe based on a recommendation from a knowledgeable person here on XDA. I also read the reviews and check out the dev first.
But, if you don't mind battery drain and slower performance, and it makes you feel safer, by all means go ahead. Just don't pay for an antivirus service--the paid services don't do anything that the free ones don't.

Mobile security all I want

Ok here's what I want lol my normal anti spy virus extra WITH USB lock so my phone can't be flashed and a cwm password is that so hard...... Core blimey

I dont think that a mobile needs Antivirus...
but if u want one.. market has alot..
I'm currently using Lookout on my Galaxy S2, I dont think there is any with a usb lock function, Although lookout has some really good features if you want to pay for them.
not necessary to install anti-virus software on cellphone

Famous last words.
I have Lookout free version. Pretty decent but I have yet to come across a virus.
You can't get a virus on Android, windows or apple platforms
Ask us any Android Related Questions @FeraLabsDevs on Twitter (Even If You've Bricked)
Unnecessary because the market remove any suspicious apps.
Maybe good for lost or stolen phone which they provide a good protection against that.
U don't need one
I agree its pretty secure but i do have one still
If you want to be secure enough, I would recommend rooting your phone, then install something like Droidwall, LBE, and some other app like that.
That should really set you up just fine!
If mobile security is all you want, then keep your bootloader locked.
as for this , you don;t worry about that ,there is little virus can cause your phone in troule
Mobile security isn't to much to worry about. but if you are still worried i suggest bitdefender.
I am using lookout on my sensation 4g and it has nice features like others have said just no USB lock
Antivirus software
While I tend to agree that antivirus software for your phone probably isn't needed for software found in the markeplace, is there still a risk for those programs side-loaded from other sources? Maybe not. I personally don't see the potential threat as being big enough for me to use it on my phone. But, as already mentioned some security programs also offer additional features that are nice - ie finding your phone if it's lost.
Damn I see a lot of stupid/dangerous replies to this thread. Going to be really funny when these people download a malicious app from the marketplace/Play.
Just to clarify there are no viruses for mobile platforms but that's because a virus is defined as malicious code that can pass it's self on. What we do find is malicious code in apps which is classed as malware rather than a virus. And yes these do exist on the market despite what some of the people on here have said and yes they exist on both Andoird and iOS, not heard of any on Windows yet.
You are the best antivirus. Just don't install suspicious apps from Google Play.

I'd go with AVG antivirus free then

memory hogging antivirus

avast! Mobile Security v2.0.4400 using up 110 MB ram leaving free ram only 27 MB.
is this normal?
is an antivirus really required on a rooted jellybean phone?
are there better alternatives to avast! Mobile Security?
No, it's not needed since you normally download your apps from Play Store. It's safe. It not only hogs battery and ram, it also collect anonymous user info and data.
To be frank antiviruses are not required actually.
They drain battery, ram usage,etc..and makes few games to run non smoothly..

I've been running android naked in terms of anti virus for years and have never had any malware problems (and I even occasionally sideload things)
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
It does add some nice anti theft and firewall features.
Do people even write viruses/malware for android? Can't say I've ever come across anything myself that would justify an AV.
Is there an antivirus which only works on demand and not in background?

There's quite a lot malware around but I think mostly it's not in official play store

You're right...
Quite a relief now I need to uninstall my AV on my phone.
I use anti on my HTC one. Not sure if needed or not.

In my 4 years of using an android I've never really felt the need to use an Antivirus.
Frankly, an antivirus on your phone is purely to keep paranoia in check. There's no point in using it as a locator after theft, because the first thing thieves do is wipe the phone.
Ironically, most infected apps are actually found in the Play Store, not on the 'alternative' websites. (unless you start downloading crap off mysterious Russian websites that have filenames like 'install.Apk') I know a few people who download litterally everything, and even they never had malware on their phone.
All the news articles on android malware are from the play store. But they usually only target eastern European users.
Your best antivirus is still common sense. If something seems fishy, it usually is.

Best Anti-Theft app

With the increase in cost of cell phones, the fear of loosing them increases. Just after purchasing any expensive mobile phone, it is now essential to check for some antitheft measure to stay protected from loosing it or at least getting it back. Google's device manager is not effective at all.
I have used few antitheft apps till now and taking into account few parameters like effectiveness, reliable, low battery usage, easy to use etc, Android Device Tracker app is a good choice.
Want to know what fellow xda members think as this app will be watch dog of my expensive droid.

well if ur phone gets stolen, the first thing thieves do nowadays is clean wipe ur phone thru recovery so this app won't be useful..
Avast! Anti-Teft If you are rooted you can install it somehow "hard reset proof"
I'm glad I haven't got any need for this app, but I have it installed just in case on my tablet. I also have it on my Note 3 which is still stock, so not that much use for it against resetting phone.
My Favorite is Prey Anti Theft
Free for 3 Items
Look here.: https://preyproject.com/
Playstore = https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.prey
best regards
Prey is cool but I like avast better. Avast uses gps wifi as prey does but avast also uses data to locate your phone if gps and wifi are off. I didnt see that option in prey.
Cerberus is also good !
I also think Cerberus is very good
SM-N9005/10000 mAh ZL
Root/CWM/Stock4.3/0×1
Baseband N9005XXUDJM7
Android Lost is my favorite.
I also use Cerberus.
Cerberus
Cerberus! one off fee. cheapest with a lot of stuff.

By far Cerberus the best anti-theft app out there. The app will survived even if after hard reset!
Cerebrus is not that easy to use app and also I think runs always in background same like Avast. Please correct me as I have not used Cerebrus.
Another thing... Have anyone actually got back their mobile phone after it is stolen?? just curious to know, and I am sure most of the users are also curious
I think if you told UK police that you know where your stolen phone was and you track it down. I thing they just laugh. And cerberus does a lot more than find your phone. I use it on my sons phone so i see where he is and send a message with alarm ringing so hes got to answer it with a picture when he does!
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
The best anti-theft barrier is yourself, don't leave your phone unattended, when walking in public try and avoid large groups of people, always have a firm grip on your phone
Sent from my SM-N9005 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Cerberus FTW...though the AVG suite also has gps location feature..
and any1 knows if the default SAMSUNG FIND MY MOBILE services are any better?
Best Anti Theft app
I tried the awesome app called fonegard.
this app will instantly when phone is disconnected from Bluetooth device. A loud alarm will triggered and camera start flashing.
The sound of the alarm like ‘Help! Stop Thief!’ is instantly started to alert the person that the phone is in danger.
Cerberus
disguised flashable zip version protects from factory reset too
