After my last flash of Beans13 ,I messed up my contacts import.can I factory reset without losing the rom?do I need to reflash the rom?
Have you tried wiping your caches. I would try that first also try deleting you google account and setting it up again. If those don't work I would just reflash the rom. I'm not sure but I think factory reset doesn't erase the rom but I would just reflash to be sure it works correctly. I hope this helps I am not very experienced but I flash a lot of roms. I just recently got the S3 so getting used to sammy phones.

Factory reset/cach/dalvic wipe is considered a dirty flash. You will not lose the rom but all apps. A clean flash requires formatting system. You will lose rom as it is in the system partition. You need to reflash rom to try to reimport or you can try going back through setup menu if there is a setup app in the drawer.

I installed VU on my inspire 4g. i have all my contacts on it and such . however i am giving that phone to my wife now. can i do a factory restore and it will restore it to the way VU was originaly installed without my apps and my contacts?

Yes you can, just either do the wipe user data option from clockworkmod recovery, or do a factory reset from the options.

No don't do that. Custom roms install things that will be deleted if you factory reset. Then it will bootloop or be missing apps do a master clear and then reflash the rom
what is the master clear? how do you do that? and you say flash the ROM, do you mean the stock ROM from HTC?

That depends on which rom she wants. If its her first android rom and you want to shoot for a stock feel then yes do the stock HTC rom. If she is comfortable with a custom rom then do a full wipe and then reinstall VU. Custom roms install things to the data partition which gets wiped when you do a factory reset causing apps to force close or not be there and depending on the custom tweaks it can also cause a bootloop at times.
Edited the build.prop file by adding 1 line, restarted phone and now I keep getting System UI has stopped message.
Any way I can edit the file to fix my phone?
Have you tried to clear the cache in recovery? If that doesn't work, try a full factory reset.
If the phone is running a stock rom, try flashing just the system.img file in fastboot.
Before doing any of this, make sure you backup your data.

Thank you, I ended up backing up the data and cache via USB, then did a flash of Cataclysm ROM. I'll let you know if it works.
Can I just restore the data ASAP after installation or do I need Google to finish restoring my backup first?
Edit: Well, restored data, stuck with the boot screen loop again, then goes to Android is upgrading... and shows it optimizing 10 apps, and back to the boot logo.

No, I made sure it was completed.
Now Play Store keeps quitting when I try to install apps. I can only install specific ones.
I recommend flashing a stock rom to make sure there isn't a hardware problem. Don't restore anything until you are sure the phone works.

Alright, I was able to get all my apps installed besides United Airlines and can't update Chrome.
So the stock rom works fine?

The stock rom is the best with the bloat taken out .I think the kernel can be improved though. I use EX
I have been using custom roms for guite a long time now. I have flashed several different roms and several flashable apps and mods without any major problems.
Until today. I flashed one camera app on top of another. The result was "com.android.phone has stopped".
1. So I first tried to uninstall that app with Rom Toolbox. Didn't help.
2. Then I cleared data and cache from Phone services. Didn't help.
3. Then I booted to recovery and wiped cache. No help.
4. Then I made factory reset, i.e. clean flash of my current rom. That did not help either! Still com.android.phone FC.
Seems that clean flash had still left something somewhere that caused the FC.
5. So I had to wipe EVERYTHING and flash and install and copy and restore all apps and data back to phone. Several hours of a job.
Yep, wiping everything is clean flash, or wipe everything but internal storage (if still problems, delete . Android folder beforehand).

A factory reset isn't a clean flash. A clean flash is wipe system, data, dalvik/art cache. You have flashed the camera app to your system partition, so you have to wipe /system in twrp too (together with /data and /cache if you want to make a clean flash). But in your case it should be enough to wipe system and then reflash your Rom to get rid of your issue

OK, thanks. Maybe in my step 4 above I thought that factory reset was enough but I didn't notice that it does not wipe system. So I went too far and wiped all my data, too.
But earlier when I have flashed different roms and they always tell that you must do clean flash, I didn't wipe system. So I thought clean flash was just factory reset. Still those different roms were working ok. Next time I try to remember wipe system also.
So I decided to flash some ROMS on my Alcatel 5045D but I wasn't completely happy with them so I decided to go back to the stock ROM.
Before flashing anything, I made a full backup of all the partitions via TWRP to be able to restore it.
So here is the problem: After restoring it, it works, but every time I restart the phone, all my settings and app permissions reset.
What I've already tried:
- Restore the backup again
- Wipe Caches
- Wipe Data, System and Caches and then restore the backup again
Is there any solution for this without flashing a downloaded stock ROM?

Maybe, but it might turn into a wild goose chase, it is simpler and easier to just flash the stock firmware file via your device's compatible flashtool and be done with the issue.
If you are worried about losing data, you can backup your data by other means than TWRP, then flash the stock firmware, then restore your data then reflash TWRP.

I'm coming from a OP3T, my clean flash procedure consisted of wiping dalvik, system, data and cache, so that I didn't lose all userdata.
I'm looking at custom ROMs for the Pixel 4A, in all of the flashing instructions it says to do a Factory Reset from the recovery - which I assume also gets rid of all of the userdata?
If that's the case, is there any way to do a clean flash/try out a different ROM without having to wipe all /data/media?

There is no such thing as performing a clean flash without wiping the /data partition aka performing a factory reset
What you can do is taking a backup with Titanium or Migrate and then restore the backup in the new rom
