[Q] AOKP, AOSP and questions.

Hey everyone! Lately I have been lookin' for some roms without sense, mainly AOSP (which there seem to be a lack of). I have run with CM10 so far, and it seems to have a lot of scrolling lag. Does AOKP have any scrolling lag in your experience? I
If any of you have some suggestions, I'd like to hear them

I gave CM10 a try, I didn't really have any scrolling lag, more that it just felt "heavy".
My issue was with how generally unstable it was, within 24 hours of flashing I was getting reboots every 10-20 mins, during low-intensity tasks or even while not using the phone.

Use Paradnoid Android roms made for jelly bean source. Yes CM10 program. Very buttery. Cheers

AOKP > CM > Paranoid (and other tablet blends) > AOSP
would you rather have a fast basic phone, or a phone that has plenty of options? sure it might be a second or two slower but imagine using phones 5-10 years ago.. those things were turtles

U serious?? let the rom settle or reflash the rom after a full wipe.. been using it since couple of months.. random boots ya but only one 2-3 specific builds which were 3 weeks ago.. its really really stable except for the heavy scroll issue all cyanogenmods hav

For the random reboots just move the min clock freq from 192 to 386

Well I have used Bruce's CM10 rom and I love it so far. The only bug I had was that the SD card (class4) was pushing out 2 mb/s, I fixed that with flashing the kernel though (I thought the rom applied that automatically). The battery life is good, loads of internal memory and I freakin' love the launcher!
Well, I'd like to a try an AOKP rom.. but I am so satisfied with CM's current stabillity and kernel. Maybe I will in the nearest future though

[Q] Could you recommend a good JellyBean ROM for Nexus S

I'm currently running latest stock Android 4.1.2 on my Nexus S. It appears that official Google support has come to an end and therefore there is no point keeping the original software. It also seems to me that current version of Android on Nexus isn't exactly a good example of well optimized software which is the reason why I'm looking for an alternative.
My requirements are speed, stability and possibly better battery life. Extra functionality is not important, I'm happy with 4.1.2 as it is. However I don't want to downgrade to ICS not to mention Gingerbread.
So could you recommend me a good alternative rom for Nexus S, based on your own experience? I'm currently thinking of CyanogenMod because there is plenty of people behind it and its really famous so I guess it should be stable and reliable but I haven't decided yet. What do you think?

I use AOKP with the marmite kernel. Works great.

Same here currently on cm 10 stable with default kernel for weeks now it's been really fast and stable. Was surprised. I had tried cm10 when it came out for our device and it was pretty bad stability and battery wise so I went to aosp roms.... Gave stable a shot and wow it has come a looooooong way in such a short time

Another vote for CM10. I'm currently using the new rasbean, but if 4.1.2 is good with you, I'm not sure anything can beat the stability of the stable version of CM10.

Having tried tons of amazing ROMs on ICS, I feel there were more stable and fluid options than with 4.1... That's not to say 4.1 didn't have great ROMs, I'm just saying that it was harder to find a stable, speedy, efficient 4.1 ROM... If you want to stay with 4.1, then I can only vouch for BAKEDbean 6... I haven't tried as many 4.1's as I did with 4.0... From memory, Slim Bean was pretty good... I just didn't like some of the included options...
Now here's what I can say about 4.2 ROMs... Since you don't mind missing some included features like theme chooser, statusbar tweaks, etc... Then I would highly suggest Rasbean with Matr1x CFS 24.0 (non-cm version)... I always told myself that I would never use a ROM without theme chooser... But after trying this ROM, I've discovered that speed and fluidity is way more important to me than a few extra features... This ROM is amazing... I'm getting much better battery life with this combo than with any 4.1 combo I tried... At the very least, give it a try
*edit* in case you see reviews or read somewhere that it's not a "stable" release... I would ignore that crap because I haven't had a single issue with this ROM other than the phone app fc'ing after some calls which is 4G related... and since you're on crespo, you won't have that problem... Everything works on this ROM!!!

Hey, thanks to all of you guys. I switched to CyanogenMod 10 since many of you have recommended it and it also seemed to me pretty solid and reliable. Nexus S now does seem a little bit faster and more fluid however it's hard to tell after less than a day of using it. I won't go back anyway, those few extra features are really nice. My problem with stock JB was that it suffered from some kind of memory leak... quite often I ended up with literally 0 MB of free ram. The phone also got quite often to a state of total unresponsiveness for few moments without any obvious reason. None of these problem has occured in CM so far however for example during heavy usage, when I go back to home screen, the launcher is really slow (1-2fps) for few seconds. But I guess I can't expect much from 2 year old hardware.
You also mentioned several alternative kernels... what can I expect from that in daily usage?

I have not an ounce of lag on rasbean 4.2.1... I didn't think it would get better than 4.1 but it clearly does... I don't think everyone that recommended cm10 has even tried a 4.2 ROM yet... BTW, cm10.1 will be released soon and I'm sure everyone with update then...
For kernel, use airkernel or matr1x... Think of the kernel as the brain of the phone... It tells the phone what to so with the hardware... So you can tweak things foe better speed or better battery or even attempt to get a good balance between the two...
My last time mentioning it... I would strongly recommend you to backup your current setup and flash the 4.2 ROM with matr1x 24.0... That is all

Really it does work that well? Hmm then it is really sad that Google has cut off Nexus S from official updates. I will definitely try 4.2 but I will probably wait for CM 10.1 if you say it will be released soon.

Well I know what the kernel is (I have been using Linux on my desktop for several years ) I was just curious how one can benefit from using an alternative kernel for Android. You say I can tweak things for better speed or battery life... does it mean that I can for example sacrifice 30% of battery life and exchange it for 30% of performance in gaming? What are the limits of this tweaking?

at the moment, my Nexus S is in maintenance/repair because of a defective Lock-/Power-Button.
When i get it back, it will be resetted to default. Using Stock 4.1.2 ROM i experience a frequent amount of lags, for example when i start the browser.
According to some Google+ Posts, there is no official 4.2.2 from Google, because the Nexus S got a too small amount of RAM.
Because i have to reinstall everything anyway, i thought of trying out a Custom Rom maybe.
What is your general advice ?
Is there a chanche, that a Custom 4.2.2 ROM is performing better, then Googles Stock 4.2.2.
My smartphone is my every day swiss army knife, so stability is an important point.

4.2.2 roms run great on my Nexus.. I can't fault them. I use Jellyshot as my daily (super stable) . I alternate with Slimbean sometimes.. If you don't like it , you can always install a rooted 4.1.2

hellybean 4.2.2 is the best rom i have ever tried. used to have microlags with every other JB i tried but this one is amazing. try it

I'm also running hellybean and it's a nice daily driver
I'm also trying out different kernels with the rom. Marmite is ok but I miss the BLN.

It all depends on your taste and overall experience with 4.1.2 and 4.2.2 ROMs.
And trust me, the above point makes it subjective for every single user.

I just downgraded to this stock: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1854366 . Had some good and bad experience with 4.2.2 - few times it worked normally, but all other times i got really bad lags. So decided to downgrade and now I'm happy how fast it works (after CM 10.1). So depending on how much RAM 4.2.2 uses, I suggest 4.1.2 - less cool features, but more usable.

4.2.2 has had the best performance and battery life of any ROM I have tried... CM10.1

I also have kind of poor performance on 4.2.2. Sometimes it will be fine, but I will start streaming via Google Music or SiriusXM over Bluetooth and it will skip randomly. I also notice random spurts of lag just navigating around in the phone. Battery life, I am lucky to get 12 hours out of a full charge. Running the latest JellyShot 4.2.2. Was on slimbean or something before that with the same issues.
Thinking about going back to 4.1 unfortunately.

Hey.. Im selling my nexus s tomorrow and have a question. Im currently on 4.2.2 3.0v jellyshot+matrix but have occasionally random reboots. Can somebody recommend a stable 4.2.2 configuration ? And which kernel is best to use with stock 4.2.1 if I decide to downgrade ?

Sell it with stock 4.1.2. Nobody likes a half stable, customized by a stranger rom when they buy a new phone.

Rasbeanjelly 4.1.2... Or flash again jelly shot !!!

Can't agree more.

I've been using jellyshot with marmite and seeder apk since jellyshot arrived and I can tell I can't find a rom more stable
Even though it's not great for gaming, but it's the smoothest for anything else.

I found JellyB-TSM to be a very smooth ROM but the latest version is at 4.2.1. Also, it does not have the Quick-pin unlock feature (even though it claims it does).
Another smooth ROM is of course Slim Bean but hands-free bluetooth does not work for me.
And just today I loaded Helly Bean (recommended here) and it looks promising and hence my recommendation as well :good:

I fell there isn't any difference between 4.1.2 and 4.2.2.May be the nexus S firmware

Just flashed from 4.1.2 to 4.2.2. It seems bit laggier and apps crashes more but then again these are nightlies just wait for the next stable rom and there wont be any problems.

I`m using Jellyshot and at first I was ready to reflash something else but after a week it is super stable and i`m getting around 30-35 hour battery life.

Finally found a 4.2.2 ROM as good as a 4.1.2. Been using Backed Black Bean 8 and it's great.

The lure of "features"
As there are over (20) 4.2 rom possibilities, coupled with around (10) different kernels, and varying differences from phone to phone, there is no real answer as to what works best.
Once you can cure the addiction to flash (never happening with me..) you'll find that the more feature packed the rom is, generally, the poorer the overall experience is. Whether it be bugs, smoothness, or speed. Adding bells and whistles only opens more opportunity to have issues. I admit that I enjoy scrolling through the endless menus to change colours and add features/alter layout... 4.2 roms hold exciting possibilities, but are not yet perfected.
I would recommend either Jellyshot or Rasbeanjelly on pure stability, speed and smoothness... They may not technically be the fastest, smoothest or most stable (as opinions differ) but they both have incredible battery life and are clutter free. Once you actually use your phone for a phone you quickly forget about all the "amazing" features that don't really improve the overall experience.
My wife has a NS as well, hers is completely untouched stock 4.1 (refuses to let me change it), she complains about speed, lag, fc's and it completely freezing up. She has never complained about not having a lockscreen widget or a holo notification screen. I use hers once in a while and it is not more stable, faster or better in battery life than mine (Jellyshot and Vta2#116 kernel).

[Q] Best simple, stable rom?

I have a I9020A (crespo) Nexus S and I can't seem to figure out which ROM to try. I just tried SlimBean because it seemed to suggest it was slim, but it ended up being laggy and almost worse than stock. Doesn't seem so slim to me.
Here's what I'm looking for:
Battery life: Very important
Features: I could care less. If I need a specific feature I could install an app for it.
Smooth and quick: Very important. I want a responsive phone. I hate when I get someone's contact info and I have to wait for the phone to respond for like 5 seconds at the worst possible time. Jerky is OK as long as it is fast and usable.
That's it. What ROMs meet the above criteria?
If I recall correctly Gingerbread seemed to be pretty darn responsive when it was natively on my phone. But after the OTA update to ICS and JellyBeans it seemed to get laggy and slow. Of course I could be mis-remembering or it be related to the amount of stuff I collected on the phone.
Also, is there any rom that doesn't degrade performance so much when the phone fills up with content? Seems like 50% of the phone has to be empty for it to run decently.

1) ROM: Jelly Shot with Marmite 8.6 CM version (non bigmem)
- Battery life 8.5/10
- Speed 9/10 (felt really smooth, no noticeable lag in ui or apps)
- Stability 8/10 (had one random reboot)
- Overall: 8.5
2) ROM: Rasbeanjelly with Marmite 8.6 CM version (non bigmem)
- In the process of trying this combo
3) ROM: CM 10.1 with stock kernel
- Battery life 7.5/10
- Speed 8/10 (pretty fast but I get the occasional lag once a multiple apps have been in use recently)
- Stability 7/10 (no real stable version of cm out yet, got some random reboots using it and force closes on some stock apps)
- Overall: 7.5
Add those with the free Greenify app and you should like how fast, smooth and long lasting your battery life/phone is.
But you might wanna try Strawberry 4.1.2 like the above poster stated, 4.1.2 has been said to provide much better battery life than most 4.2.2 ROMs and Strawberry is highly praised I've tried it in the past and I would agree it was pretty damn good.

Where can I download the Marmite 8.6 CM version (non bigmem)? The kernel I'm using for JellyShot doesn't seem very good. Still has lag issues while waiting for apps to load up etc.

100.1% Google experience with Marmite kernel.

For what you described JellyShot with Marmite CM kernel or Devil kernel or RasbeanJelly with Marmite, they have the best batery life and smoothness and if you dont care about it beyng a 4.2 device try CM10 stable with Marmite or HellyBean 4.1 with the same one and only Marmite

I've been told its more stable. But if you give me the link to both I'll try em both!

I'm currently trying Jelly Shot with Devil kernel. It ticks all the boxes for me. Great sound quality with Voodoo and still nippy around the launcher. I found using bigmem Marmite I took a hit in sound quality.

That is what I feel yes. Considering that I spend all day at a computer listening to my Nexus S (Tunein Radio and Google Music) I know how my phone sounds and I know the sound changes when i enable Voodoo. When I enabled Voodoo Sound with bigmem It did not feel as smooth as it did with Helly Bean/Devil Kernel combo which I had been using for months previously.
So when I tried the Jelly Shot bigmem combo which everyone raves about I dropped the bigmem kernel from Jelly Shot and used Devil kernel instead and viola - Voodoo Sound was back again. The ROM still runs super smooth as well, virtually lag free still after a week.
This is just my personal opinion, I may just be dreaming it, it could be the placebo effect who knows. But considering I listen to my phone all day everyday of the working week, what I stated above is what I detected.
For me its the perfect union

Yes I did. Just before Christmas. I was on a early Marmite version, maybe 6 or something lower and using it with stock ROM. I kept on getting random reboots when streaming radio. I then moved over to Helly Bean/Devil Kernel and I did notice that Voodoo was better. So maybe its Marmite in general.

When I enabled Voodoo Sound with bigmem It did not feel as smooth as it did with Helly Bean/Devil Kernel combo which I had been using for months previously.
So when I tried the Jelly Shot bigmem combo which everyone raves about I dropped the bigmem kernel from Jelly Shot and used Devil kernel instead and viola - Voodoo Sound was back again. The ROM still runs super smooth as well, virtually lag free still after a week.
This is just my personal opinion, I may just be dreaming it, it could be the placebo effect who knows. But considering I listen to my phone all day everyday of the working week, what I stated above is what I detected.

Fastest 4.4 KK rom?

Hey guys I just recently got a second hand Ns Im using as an Mp3 player for the gym I loaded ENHDROIX rom but its prettty laggy and stuttery. Loading Pandora is extremely sluggish and actually crashes a bit.
Im looking for a rom with some decent speed and just a few perks, volume rocker wake mainly.

well I placed the issue of Pandora in there so perhaps someone who uses the phone the same way could input on what they use and that its comparable to what I am looking for.
I would just dump rom after rom until I find something but time for me is super precious these next couple months.
A chart is great but remember Im not using a lot of the features the charts will describe.
Im only using it for google voice (to see my calls in the gym), pandora, play store, and play music, then some web browsing of course.
I actually turned off all the phone and data features to hopefully conserve battery life.

I just read it. I can try the slim rom. Im going to try installing devil kernel later first and see if it helps.
Still just hoping someone who is utilizing the same features I am can drop in and give their input. Not saying any rom is bad or better just looking to save some time, Im on the road a lot the next few months and the gym is my only real down time. Last night it was quite frustrating dealing with pandora.

The rom version you are using is partly to blame, newer isn't always better, go back to a previous version and install Devil.. the same for Slim, I wouldn't suggest passing 3.0 as of right now and Illusion has a couple issues, but it has serious speed...

Euroskank KitKang is another good option, and Devil Kernel is a must for any of the CM based ROMs, in my opinion.

I just tried this version, and it does seem a bit faster than the original AOSP.. It is fast, but not very smooth, as scrolling seems rather jittery...

Try Illusion 3/16 ( I made a bootable version, as the original had a flaw in the updater script, link is on the page) and flash the boot.img from your AOSP rom.. I was getting 5500's in antutu on stock speeds and 6500's overclocked, smooth scrolling and better battery life as well...
Don't try Devil with this rom as it breaks the playstore..

no need for custom kernel just boot up latest nightlie from Cyanfox and cyanfox gapps and it's the fastest 4.4 rom for nexus s there is ! !! :laugh::laugh:

I haven't tested Cyanfox since 2.02, it is a quick rom.. the site is down, gearing up for version 3, I wonder if our device will still be supported?.. C-rom is very fast with Devil kernel, (the initial release, the second release is slightly slower than the first) and has tested higher than any rom I've tried to date, even higher than when I tested Cyanfox.. If our device is supported in version 3, I hope the rotation bug is fixed..

I'm using it with devil kernel now as well and it's slightly slower for me than cyanfox's latest nightlie,
