search key as play-pause key - Optimus One, P500 Original Android Development

hi all.... i have done my very first mod for our optimus one.
I did some research so i understood how to remap phisical buttons on our android device. One of the most important functions that my phone does for me is playing music, and i love dedicated media buttons. Cyanogenmod is an example of a rom that let you use the volume keys as media buttons but the thing is that cyanogenmod is still in nightly... Stock roms are the most stable for daily use but you cannot use the volume keys as media keys, and of course, cannot use all of the other custom features.
Thats the reason why i decide to remap the search key to a media key. I don't use search features on my phone, so the search key is basicly an unused button for me.
the remapped key is HEADSETHOOK. search key will work as that button.
tested on resurrection 2.0... should work on other stock 2.3.3 based roms
PD: i am not a developer. i'm just a curious guy :laugh::laugh::laugh:
EDIT: AS FitAmp suggest, i made a flasheable zip and a revert flasheable zip to come back to normal. ONLY WORKS ON AMON RA recovery. CWM and TWRP gives me status 7 with updater script. This zips has update (amend) script so it works on ra recovery.
the zips are attached to the thread

Would you be able to make this into a flashable zip? And perhaps, a patch to revert the changes?
I don't seem to use the search key either so this looks good for me as I listen to ALOT of music.

thanks for suggest. i just uploaded the zip files. enjoy!

Actually cyanogenmod has released a stable version, and all of the recent nightlies are quite stable. Thanks for the files though, great work.

[Q] Could anyone implement a mod just to 'Long Press back button to kill app?'

I know there are some ROMs and MODs that incorporate this as a part of a feature but the ROMs/MODs I currently use it for stability don't have this feature and I really miss this coming from CM9...
Could anyone kindly make this feature available as a stand-alone feature...?
I have Nexus S 4.0.4 ROM... Thanks!

Did a quick search and was unable to find any corresponding feature for non-cm ROMs. Just in case you want to try out editing it yourself, or someone with enough knowledge some day spots this thread: you might like to have a look at files at /system/usr/keylayout and /system/usr/keychars, I think they are used for the phone's key setup.

Thanks but I'm not that expert to modify files... haha
Wish someone could come up with this mod
I haven't looked through my ROM but this is a feature in Cyanogenmod 7.2 (Gingerbread 2.3.5) i am running this there is a settings panel you can tell the back button what to do upon long press! Maybe it is possible to extract this setting? Im not sure about that as i have never extracted or attempted to extract settings from any roms! But just an idea i figure
could need it, too !!!

Flashable "skip track with volume buttons" ?

I'm on brainmasters JB ROM, does anyone know if there is a flashable zip or some way to get the skip track with volume buttons function to work?
Hey man, im afraid I am not aware of any kind of zip that can modify your stock based rom that way to include tht feature in the rom's settings, unless theres an app for it (I dont think so . . could be wrong)
Only way I can think of would be to simply flash another rom that has volume button track skipping. The best alternative rom I have tried would have to be cm10 jellybro by euroskank, its SOOOO fast and has loads of features, im sure you will love it, but now im slowly downloading the final build of aokp which also has track skipping, because aokp > cm . . always
Yeah, I ran AOKP for ICS over CM9, good stuff. I'll have to look into the new AOKP and JellyBro roms

Running it on 11/06 CM10 nightly, no issues noticed, aside from the known camcorder issues. The keyboard is pretty cool!
Jesus. That gapps is twice the size of the 4.1.2 gapps and larger than my entire ROM+kernel+modem.
Currently running on CM10 Nov 11 nightly, and I'm having an issue with the clock/timer. When I'm running a timer I am told it stops working any time I leave the app, either by switching to another or just hitting the Home key. Opening up the timer again shows that it is still running. I've also had issues with the phone locking up while sleeping, but I'm not sure if that's related yet.
Any thoughts?

Just had a question. Every time I update my nightly build, I have to reflash the android 4.2 apps (gmail won't be there). Is this normal or does it have to do with how I put the gmail.apk in /system/app after a flash?
You could do what I've done, make your own gapps. Put the Gmail apk into the gapps zip. Start with an existing gapps zip, open (not extract) it, navigate to system/app, delete the files you want to replace and drag/drop the new files to replace them.
Pretty easy if you ask me. I've managed to make a gapps zip that replaces the system font, copies all of the necessary libs for dsp manager, flashes a multi-dpi play store, and flashes some inverted apps that I want. Pm me if you want some tips.

Liquidzoo,
If I took the gapps zip and opened it can I remove some things that I don't want? Or will that "break" the flashable zip?
Thanks in advance.

Yes, you should be able to remove things you don't want and add things that you do (be aware, there are some config changes that need to be made if you want to install anything to /data).
I adjusted my gapps file last night to include some of the 4.2 apps, but I'm getting a clock FC every time I reboot, which is strange. I will have to take a step back and add only what I really want for now.
What is what?

What exactly is included in the two links you copied? The first is KDH's gapps package, and the latter is Google Wallet? But when we follow the link to the original post in the GNex forum, the OP also includes "INVERTED 4.2 GAPPS + AROMA BY justin860" which seems to contain far more *and* is inverted?
I'm just trying to understand because I've never flashed anything but the basic 4.1 gapps with CM10, but I'd really like to try the 4.2 stuff and would prefer dark/inverted (for battery life and the sake of my eyes). But I'm confused by the plethora of gapps offerings, even just those in the Gnex post.
Honestly, I don't know what is included. I was just copying the download links to paste here so everyone knew it was available.

I've never used Swype so I can't comment on that. I do like the 4.2 keyboard. I've used TouchPal as well, and I own SwiftKey (haven't seen the SwiftKey swipe version yet), I find them all to be comparable.
Oh swipe is the new thing, I never got into swiping it just seems lazy to me. I use Perfect Keyboard Pro so I can set it up in dvorak layout. It's either that or I talk.

I use CyanDelta app from Playstore. when nightlies are released, it only downloads the pieces I need (avg. 6 to 12 mb). then in CyanDelta settings, you can configure any zip's you want to flash after update. I flash my kernel (kk .12) and this gapps package, minus Chrome.
it really works amazing.
- notifies when nightly is available
- reboots into recovery, installs update
- then installs any additional zips
- then reboots and away you go.
I install every nightly, have had no RR or SOD.
just my two cents.
Steve
Has anyone made these inverted? I know they're recent release but I figured I'd ask.

Always remember that XDA started out as a great place and will remain a great place as long as we are great to each other anything used in this ROM is available upon request and feel free to use this as a base rom for any other project.
WANT TO CUSTOMIZE THIS ROM READ THIS:
Want to add or remove anything or customize for yourself use DSIXDA's Kitchen. Its a great kitchen for customizing prebuilt ROMs.
Hi. Just installed this and I like it. A few others have been having issues with chrome and location services causing soft reboots and really bad stability. This ROM does not have that problem. I tried first with the full PA gapps and had issues with Google search and the Google calendar FC. Wiped and clean installed and used the Banks gapps. All is good now.
Gonna go install the Elemental X kennel now.
Thanks for the ROM.

HI @jakdillard . First off thanks for the great AOSP ROM. Glad to see more entries. I have a question not about the ROM because its excellent for me but ever since the AOSP ROMs started coming out, some of us have noted a recurring problem with many of them. @scrosler maintains a AOSP ROM which is afflicted. @ctfrommn does too for some of us. The main problem we have is that when we load these ROMs on our Nexus 7 wifi editions and visit pages which request access to locations like www.google.com, www.yahoo.com or others, the chrome browser crashes and for me it causes a soft reboot. If we just stick to the aosp ROM after some bit of time the AOSP browser also gets very unstable and will start crashing no matter how much cleaning, clearing, etc we do. @scrosler had documented some of this and we've collaborated a bit trying to figure out why this happens. On rasbean, carbon, your ROM, and a few others it does not happen.
I am hoping perhaps you could share some knowledge and let us know any commits, if you saw this behavior before you put the ROM up and did something to fix it. Any info at all would be very helpful. I'd love to be able to see this fixed and get the other ROMs working.
Thanks for the contribution again.

Very well put. I build rom's from aosp for myself. I am, of course, running into the same issues. Clearly there is something being added by Google that doesn't exist in aosp to make Google location services work. Obviously this rom has it. With the support of the aosp apps being slowly phased out in favor of Google apps, we are going to need a patch in order to be able to make a fully functional rom. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

I have to look over those other roms sources to see what they are missing more the likely they don't have the location services pointing to the right adapter or still using the old way of making device trees causing make to not put the overlays together correctly.

[Q] ROM for phone with broken capacitive buttons

My wife has an original One S which was dropped in sink and now the capacitive buttons dont work.
Are there any roms that can show navigation buttons on screen as per Nexus devices?
And can I root and install rom without capacitive buttons?
Thanks in advance
Yes there is a rom with navigation buttons, it's twistedkat. I don't know if there is any other, i use twisted. And you don't need capacitve buttons to root. Just flash a custom recovery(i recommend twrp 2.7) and flash su binary. To be able to install any of kitkat roms you might need to update your firmware. If you have 2.15 hboot that means your firmware is up to date.
Sent from my One S
You can use any ROM you want, just install the Xposed Framework and GravityBox or XBlast Tools module. Both have the ability to add navigation bar to a ROM even if it's not there. Also most of the KK ROMs have the navbar option in settings (I think CM11 doesn't have it but not sure). TwistedKat, Beanstalk, IOAP, CandyKat, SlimKat...all have it
Thanks, will give those a try.

To be honest, I never tried Xposed with a sense-based ROM. As I know it is working, there's even a dedicated sense Xposed module called Sense 5 Toolbox but I don't know how the modules made for AOSP ROMs work on Sense. Theoretically if they're not conflicting with some ROM functionality, they should work. But I guess this is something you should try and see. Make a nandorid backup in recovery before installing those...just to be on the safe side
The only problem I see here is that Sense was made for HTC Phones. And ALL HTC phones had hardware buttons not on-screen nav bar buttons. The only exception is the newly released HTC One (M8) but that comes with Sense 6 and yes, that has on-screen nav buttons. So dunno if you will find a way to add that to a Sense 5.x
Hard brick
Attempted twistedkat install but had issues in recovery and think I hard bricked it
Details are in the emergency thread in case anyone can save me!

Thanks for all the advice so far
All good now
A decent charge allowed me to get into bootloader and flash the right recovery. twistedkat running well - on screen buttons
Wife test starts soon.....
