[Q] Advantages of rooting - HTC One S

Hi there,
I've had my One S for about a month now and I really love it. So far I haven't rooted my phone yet so I'm using stock (T-Mobile, Netherlands). However, I find the battery life a bit lacking and T-Mobile installed some bull**** apps that I can't uninstall.
So I'm tempted to root my One S, as I did with my previous phone (Wildfire S). However, I have some questions. First of all, I read about a difference between S3 and S4, and that S3 isn't rootable + there isn't much support for custom roms, is this true. Second of all, what's a way to definatly find out if I'm S3 or S4, without looking on the box or anything.
Third, how safe is rooting atm and which guide should I use? And last but not least, what ROM do you recommend?
Thanks a lot for reading .
Greetings,

I believe you can find out what processor you have by going into settings, about phone, hardware information. If not, download quadrant standard from the market and go into system information. Look at the max frequency of the CPU. If it is 1512mhz, then it is S4. If it says 1700 or something around there then you have the S3 version.

Hi ....to root a device ...you really need to know what your doing....or you could damage the device
There is just so much diversity of what you can do ...it can get very comfusing
But go to OneXroot.com.....& follow Max's ..."1 click method"
Its the easiest way to root the HTC One S .....the videos are for the HTC One X ...but the method works fine for the HTC One S

A few questions that I am concerned

Hi Guys, I am planning to buy this phone, I am from Mexico and before I make the purchase I have a few questions and since I have been around with the HD2 for about a year now, I don't know anything related this one.
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s_ii_skyrocket_i727-4303.php
- Is there as much development for this specific model as the vanilla S2 one?
- I saw in a sticky thread that there is a way to unlock a S2 with an app, is it possible with this model?
- Since I will be using it in Mexico (Telcel carrier, GSM) I won't receive the ICS update right? but I guess I will be able to root it and then upgrade it following a guide in the Android development subforum?
- Does anyone tested the MHL (HDMI adapter) with this specific model or at least with the vanilla S2? How is it working so far?
- What are your thoughts overall about this phone?
Thanks guys, I know these are common questions but after reading some posts I would like some fresh ideas.

- Is there as much development for this specific model as the vanilla S2 one? The phone is relatively new and the AOSP hasn't been released yet, so it's only going to get better.
- I saw in a sticky thread that there is a way to unlock a S2 with an app, is it possible with this model? There's multiple ways to unlock it as you can see in the development thread. I used the One Click Root method on my phone and it worked perfectly
- Since I will be using it in Mexico (Telcel carrier, GSM) I won't receive the ICS update right? but I guess I will be able to root it and then upgrade it following a guide in the Android development subforum? I don't see why you shouldn't receive the ICS update, but yeah if you don't you can install a custom version instead.
- Does anyone tested the MHL (HDMI adapter) with this specific model or at least with the vanilla S2? How is it working so far? Can't speak to this yet.
- What are your thoughts overall about this phone? Very good and will probably only get better once ICS is released and LTE is deployed more. Screen isn't the best ever (not up to Galaxy Nexus level) but definitely acceptable

Thanks for your quick answers!
But do you recommend me to get the Skyrocket better than the vanilla SG2?
I do recommend it over the van. SG2. Better features. The screen IMO is perfect for a phone. One thing you have to consider is the better the screen the more power it's going to consume. I feel the screen was perfect for this phone. Take the LG Nitro HD for example it has an AH-IPS display. Battery only lasts 4-6 hrs max. I'm expecting to see official support for CM9 after one of the carriers drop a ICS rom for this phone (or a close sister phone from like TMobile). Once CM9 is out for this phone that's all I'll use.

How to root the HTC One S on Vodafone for a friend

Hi,
Basically I'm friendly with the rooting and tinkering side of Android (ROM's, OC, Flashing etc..) on Samsung devices, however I have a friend who is new to Android and really caring about what phone you have (previously had a Blackberry:/), since I got him into phones and how they work and stuff, hes decided to buy a HTC One S. After seeing my rooted S3 and all the cool stuff I've done, he really wants to do this on his One S. I offered to do it for him and look into things, however the whole HTC way of things is really alien to me. I hear things about how its impossible to root and flash ROMs as its carrier locked its impossible to unlock its bootloader and stuff. So I was basically going to ask (sorry if already asked on the forum just don't have much time to do it) how can I root his HTC One S, locked on Vodafone UK, so he can flash custom ROMs and OC and stuff? If it's even possible..
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

[Q] What is the latest official Android version provided by HTC for One S (S3 / S4) ?

Hello,
I'm looking for a specific information on the forums but can't find it... i mean, i read something on a topic and the total opposite on another so I thought i could open a new thread to ask it simply...
Birthday of my brother-in-law is getting close and he own a Galaxy Gio for the last year. He was very hostile to smartphones and especially touch screens (as he never used a capacitive before that) and is very pleased with it, despite the fact that internal memory is so poor that he constantly have to uninstall apps to try new ones... App2SD is not working for everything...
Now is the time to buy a new one... budget is 300€ max and after looking a lot of videos on YouTube, HTC One S seems the right choice, despite the fact it is getting "old". HTC One SV which is more young is, imho, not as good and the back design is not elegant like the One S.
First difficulty is to find the S4 version... but i know they have different references and clock speed of the CPU is also different so it is not that hard to know what you buy before you buy.
I'd like to know what is actually the latest stock version of Android available from HTC. Personally, i don't mind tricking my own smartphone, unlock bootloader and install custom roms to find which one suits the best to me (i have a Galaxy Nexus so getting the latest Android version is not really a problem) but my brother-in-law is definitely not a geek and won't even consider doing it. I wish he could experience the JB experience (butter project, ...) with the One S and wonder if both models (S3 and S4) already have an official JB update... and, if positive, which version is it ?
Last but not least, do you think HTC is going to provide an additional update in the future for this One S... and, if positive, what could be given ? Maybe Sense 5.0 ?
Thank you for taking the time to answer me !
The S4 runs on 4.1.1 currently.
HTC has gone on record to say that One S will receive the Sense 5 update is expected sometime in July. HTC hasn't specified whether that'll be 4.1.2 or 4.2, although 4.2 is more likely.

[Q] Buying advice: Samsung GS4 or S5?

I am about to get a new phone (now because I cracked the screen on my LG E980...) namely to have a better experience in customizing, etc.
I am aware that the S5 has somewhat better performance than the S4, but I am more interested in the options for ROM development and customize-ability. First off, what is the appropriate model name for the S4? (I'm on AT&T) Wondering this for compatibility purposes.. Also are there any software updates I should avoid? Will I need to go back to any old firmware/software version(s) to have better luck rotting or installing ROMs/recoveries?
Any insight appreciated, thanks!

I had an s3 t999 and broke the screen. Loved it! Stable ROMs galore!
I went out and went to the S5 g900T! I love AOSP ROMs and there are no stable AOSP roms. I have trouble getting text messages. Even after i updated bootloader modem. I've tried every rom. Mabye in a few months I will like it
BUT
After having it for about 4 months I just went out 3 days ago and purchased an S4 M919 aand so far I love it. Works greeat and there are a ton of ROMs.
I like checking every ROM out so I might not be the best person to ask because I didnt spend a lot of time on the stock ROMs.

[Completed] [Q] need help picking a new phone

I currently use a Samsung Galaxy SIII on verizon. I did the whole rooting and bootloader thing (whatever you call it). Im in the market for a new phone and was wanting some insight on what new phones are out there that i can do the same thing. I love the ability to load custom roms and do away with all the bloatware that come with every phone. Can some one help out with letting me know what phone still has the capability to root like i did my SG3. I keep reading that the new galaxy phones are impossible to root anymore. I was leaning towards the note 4 but it looks like theres not root for it. Im looking for a phone that I know can be rooted (along with the bootloader) and where i can use custom roms. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.
Hi,
you won't get your question answered on XDA. I suggest you search for the best phone you should pick yourself. For the ability to root the phone you desire, I recommend you to have a look if there is a device forum on XDA and that the phone is rootable.
Good luck!
