Do i really need a screen protector? - Galaxy Note 10.1 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just ordered my Note today and well, my screen protector hasn't arrived as yet. I'm slight concerned about scratching the screen, im a perfectionist kind of guy. Btu the screen guard it comes with has the experience with the tab feeling quite icky. should i take the risk of removing it right now?

I have been using mine without a screen protector since I've had it, I did purchase one recently and took it off after about 1hr as I did not like the way it felt. Maybe I bought a bad one but I was not able to write as smoothly as I could using the s-pen and the protector on.
I have looked at the screen for signs of scratching and am happy to say that there are no scratches, a simple wipe with a micro fibre cloth does the trick to move any finger print marks or pen marks.
I've had the Note since launch day, I think that was the 16th August and have been using the pen extensively.

do finger prints accumulate very easily on the screen?

Yep, unfortunately the notes screen is definitely a finger print magnet, I try to use the pen whenever it's practical to do so.

Yes you need one,. Mine is scratched after 2 days of in door use,

Personally, I like the matte screen protector that I am using. I can see the screen well even in bright conditions and it doesn't absorb fingerprint. So far it hasn't given me any trouble when I use the S Pen and of course the protection is the added bonus. I got mine as a packaged deal on amazon, leather case, charger, car charger, usb cable, screen protector and headphones, all for about 18 bucks.

And i have a fold cover case for it which would be closed unless it is in use

nope you don't need one
If you take care of it. My opinion is you don't need one. I never use them for the screen.:fingers-crossed:

I agree, I never use a protector on any of my devices and I don't have any scratches

I use a screen protector on mine for peace of mind. I changed the top of the s pen to the plastic tipped one instead of the rubber tipped one and it works like a dream.

I would love to use a matte protector just to cut down on screen funk from body oils on finger tips (we humans are slimy beasts), but I can never get used to the image degradation the matting effect causes.

I never used one for all the tablets I've owned which is five now, but I do put them on my phones.
Although I have a travel sleeve that I use while transporting.
I don't find they get scratched as long as your not being an amateur.

I almost NEVER use a screen protector. If I did it would be ONLY to cut down on glare .. I have had many tablets in the past. Windows tablets and used the handwriting recognition A LOT !!! I might be wrong but I always felt that as long as my pen tip was smooth I would be ok and it wouldn't scratch the glass. I still have one of my Lenovo Tablets and there are no scratches. There are no scratches on my Samsung Slate 7 either and I use that a lot .. When I got my Dell Streak I bought the Skinomi skin. It covered the Streak and the screen .. It worked GREAT but I don't know how any skin would be when you are using a pen .. I haven't bought the Note 10.1 yet .. Probably will today. I am more sure that I will NOT put a screen protector on the Note than if I will be buying the Note ...

Yes we (humans) are slimy beasts.
After buying the GNote and experimenting with it for a few days I couldn't dare anymore to touch the screen with my fingers. I just used the S Pen.
But this is not much convenient for navigating, zooming etc.
So I bought a matte film protector.
Everything's changed now!
I don't feel so slimy anymore and I can touch the screen with my fingers again with no refrains and guilt feelings.
It was well worth it for the very slight image degradation it produce.

Yep: http://eee.asus.com/en/eeepad/transformer-infinity/features/
Doesn't mean that you won't need or want a screen protector though.
I don't use any screen protector for my tf700(whole family using it), droid Charge (my son and I using it)or galaxy S3(wife and daughter) and up until today, no scratch on any of them.
I don't use a screen protector on my tablet. However, my Samsung Captivate (just over 2 years old) has recently began scratching for some reason. But it doesn't really bother me since in a few months I'll buy a new phone anyways.

Oftentimes, the screen protector is not used for the most obvious effect of protecting the screen, but also to reduce glare (especialy when outisde or in high-intensity (i.e., harsh) lighting. That might be a reason for going for that screen protector anyway, the fact that the TF700 has Gorilla Glass 2 notwithstanding...
I would, however, highly recommend *against* using an anti-glare screen protector on the TF700 - I installed one when I got my TF700 and after two weeks or so, I removed it once I saw how nice the naked screen looked on my new Nexus 7. All that I can say is - WOW - the anti-glare protector *really* made a beautiful screen look bad! If you are going to use an anti-glare protector, you might as well just buy the TF300 instead since all of the resolution benefits will be "hidden" under that 10 dollar screen protector!

Absolutely no point to using a screen protector on the transformer. Unless you literally chuck things at it or chuck it around carelessly?

Especially with the dock connected -- the laptop-fold makes it oen of the best-protected items in my work bag. Except maybe for the cookies I used to take along for the night shifts -- they oftentimes underwent cookie genocide during the train commute to work.
So many "do i need a screen protector" threads i dont know why these are not auto-locked...
Yes, you have gorilla glass.
Yes, gorilla glass WILL scratch
You CAN get dents / micro scratches / even full sized scratches in GG
You CAN use a device and never scratch the screen even without a screen protector the same way you CAN go to a dorm party and not get drunk. Just depends on you.
A screen protector CAN make it harder to swipe (esp the military grade ones)
A screen protector CAN reduce image quality
A screen protector CAN save your screen from getting worse damage and potentially needing to replace your screen.
Use your head. Gorilla glass is glass. It can scratch. Maybe not with something sharp like a razor blade but if you get grit or dust dirt rocks etc and it rubs against the glass that can and will make a scratch.
Anyone who lives in a place where they put gravel down in the winter knows it doesnt take long before you get pits all over your windshield. Those same pits can happen in gorilla glass. Yeah, you may not have scratches, but you can get all kinds of dings and whatnot. Hell, my S2 had a nice sized scratch along the bottom and that had gorilla glass.
You have to decide do you want the protection of a screen protector or do you want the tradeoff of a screen protector. If you like the feel of glass, dont want fingerprints, etc. there are oileophobic screen protectors out there (cost a bit more but better quality), dont feel like rubber, dont leave fingerprints, easy to replace if you do scratch them
Oh, and for those of you with a gorilla glass screen that IS scratched, give this a read:

Note 3 Display Protection

Hi there guys. Those who are curious like me to know about the screen of note 3 has gorilla glass 3 protection or not, here is the answer.
I emailed samsung customer service and they replied me back and told me it got gorilla glass 3 protection..
Does this mean I can finally get rid of the annoying screen protector and use the phone as it's mean to be used?
Sent from my SM-N900 using xda app-developers app
No. Gorilla Glass 3 is the same as Gorilla Glass 2 except it's thinner. It's only scratch resistant, not scratch proof. Sand can easily scratch glass. You may not think your around any if you're not near a beach, but sand is every where. All it takes is a few grains to end up if you're pocket or a table you set your phone on to scratch it's pretty face. If you like living on the edge go for it, but I'll continue to use a screen protector.
Maybe someday we'll come up with inexpensive and tough Sapphire screens. That's when you won't have to worry about scratches. Since the only thing harder than sapphire are diamonds.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk 2
I've never used a screen protector, on any smartphone, and have never had a scratch on the screens regardless.
What bloody idiot puts his phone face down on a table? Does that not defeat the whole point of having a screen?
On the older models with speaker on the back it made a bit of sense, (not really, because the table served as an enhancer) but not on this phone.

I live in the UAE, sand is a constant danger.
I also am heavily into off-roading. you'd be amazed where sand can get.
I have sand in my pockets, ears, nose, mouth etc, this stuff gets everywhere!
Put a screen protector, it's a no brainer for me.
It is really a no-big deal to put the screen protector on your phone.it's not expensive, and it doesn't hurt. right?

I learnt the hard way, I used the Note 1 with no protection for 12 months and sold it with no scratches on the screen. Then on my Note 2 I used a Samsung flip cover, at some point the velvet coating picked up some grit and whilst it was in my pocket scratched the hell out of the screen! Now my Note 3 has a tempered glass screen protector on, and will always have one on!
Mine came pre-scratched
But you can't see it at all when the screen is on. And when off it's barely visible, and you have to hold it just so to see it.
Sent from my SM-N9005 using xda app-developers app
Guys. And girls.
Check your Samsung user manual. Does it tell you not to use a screen protector? Yeah. It really does.
So: go without a screen protector if you want to, and if the screen does get scratched, bring the phone and the user manual to the store while you still have valid warranty. You should be able to get a new phone or a screen exchange.
It says it right in the manual. So if it does get scratched, use your rights as a consumer. You used your phone according to what is outlined in the manual and now it has a defect, so you get a repaired phone or a replacement. You know... That's what the warranty bit is all about.

It is glass.... A thin layer of hardened glass over the screen.... Feels like it's naked but gives awesome protection. Costs a bit more than the normal screen protector but well worth it...
The one I got - spigen glasT - has a few different coloured home key raisers in it too... Pick of black, clear or pink...
Oh, and the easiest install I've ever done with no bubbles... Line up on screen and then swipe finger down middle.... Lightly press out any air bubbles that are left, if some small bubbles left over, just leave for a day or two and they disappear... Brilliant....
Thanks, I think I might give one a try.

Best film screen protector

Well i may end up going with film for now due to the issues everyone with the S7 Edge has had with glass. I love glas dont get me wrong but im going to waste money trying them out.
Sucks that Gorilla glass 5 scratches easy.
What do you guys recommend or are using. Wet or dry. I have never liked the wet kind but that may be the best option for now.

This one is working rather well for me. It's a dry installation but it's not static cling. The material is kinda odd. Feels like a hybrid between static cling and the wet application ones. It's the best out now for the Note7 until a great static cling comes out. The only reason I wouldn't rate it very highly is because you can indent it with the included squeegee if you're not careful and if something gets stuck between it and your screen, you can't remove whatever it is. I used both films but second time was good enough.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01J7MPEGG/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
here are some pics of them on my phone. as you see in the pics you cant tell that i have the screen protector on. it's that good. and it curves and sticks easy around the edge. i got a couple other screen protectors but they didnt play well will the cases i have. only the film ones work. and this one is not sticky, your fingers glides across it almost like glass. i have 2 glass ones and while they line up with holes and size, they dont fit with a case. the case pushes the corners of them up. the plesson case is pretty nice. it has cut outs of good size and the case hugs the phone good. it even has a little bit of a cut out on the side where the edge screen is so that you can interact with the edge screen much easier. the other cases i have go up a little too far on the edge screen imo.
I got the Zagg HD.....it sucks compared to glass. I remember these from before and how I disliked them.

Looks promising
I bought the icarez 2 pack. It was a b!tc4 to align put on. It literally took me over 30 minutes overall. There is still some small lint under but I did this at work on my desk. One side wouldn't stick and neither do the 4 corners so I used a heat gun to mold it into shape. I have to be careful when I put my case on as it will lift off if it pushes on it. So I have to start on 1 side (shown in 1 of the pictures) first then on the other side, pull the corners over the protectors so it doesn't push on them. Luckily my case is thin so I can stretch it out a bit.
The icarez covers a good portion of the sides so my case sits on top of the protector. Also you can see stylus marking on the protector. Visible when screen is off and viewing for an angle. But it's super clear and does not affect the clarity of the screen.
Sorry, I don't know if I put them in order but hopefully you can tell which has the case and which doesn't.

Any one using S7 without a screen protector?

As the title suggests guys. After spending tons of money in numerous screen protectors i found out that, a protector that's completely clear and covers the full screen doesn't exist. So any one using their phone without one? If yes, then how is it scratching up? Are the scratches too much? I absolutely baby my phone and, after 1 year it looks completely new. As i intend on using it for one more year, how do you think it will hold up without a screen protector? Any input will be appreciated.

Good to hear that. Eases my mind.
Everyday items shouldn't leave any scratches on your phone (keys, coins, tabletops etc etc) its the smaller materials the causes most scratches. Sand is the worst, rock/cement particles and obviously dropping the device will leave marks. I've used my phone since launch and the glass is perfect. Just use a case with a good lip over the glass and your good.

I don't mean to scare you but any unprotected drop over 4ft has potential to crack the screen. Ive cracked the lower left and upper right corners of my S7 flat. I know that drops will essentially kill the phone. I intend to use a case for that. What i am worried about is how will the screen scratch up in day to day use without a protector.
I have never used a screen protector on any of my phones. I have never had a cracked screen. I don't see how they can really work and they generally look crap on an expensive phone pretty quickly. One thing, the S7 is a pretty heavy phone compared to the S4 which weighed nothing, so if you drop it the screen is possibly more likely to crack if it hits something. I alway use a case and that has saved the phone many times.

I baby my phone too -- always in the same front pocket -- nothing else in that pocket with it, to protect the screen -- always lay it face-down on clean and flat surfaces, etc.
When I got my phone, I searched high and low for a quality glass screen protector too, and you are right, there is none (that works well with a case). I figured I could try no screen protector, because the Corning Gorilla glass these days is relatively impervious to scratches and dirt, so I've been going with a slim case and no screen protector for a year now.
Not a scratch anywhere, and it looks much better than previous phones with screen protectors (especially the plastic ones).

Thank you so much man. I was really confused about using the phone without a protector. Your experience would really help me make the decision.
Okay, so this an update. After so many encouraging info from fellow members, i have been rocking my s7 witnout a screen protector for about a week. And i am happy go say that the display isnt as fragile as i thought it to be. Still no scratch, knock on wood. This is a thank you to all the people who answered and helped me take my decision.
I used s7 without screen protector....
No protector here - and no scratches. I've used two different cases (Spigen and a Diztronic). The screen stays off any surfaces. Ordinary items have not scratched my screen.
Screens held up fine without one since release

I haven't had a screen protector on my S7 since the day I bought it. That was about 2 years ago and there still aren't any scratches on it at all. I always make sure that the screen is against my leg in my shorts/trouser pocket and my right hand leg pocket is solely for my phone. Nothing else ever goes in there besides the phone and that seems to work pretty well. I do have a decent rear cover (VRS Design) that has a nice raised lip around the screen too. I haven't dropped the phone yet though.
horrible scratches

I think new batches of S7 are not Gorilla Glass. Mine is 2 months old and in 2 weeks it developed a lot of small scratches and 3-4 very deep ones. I never had a phone with such a bad glass and i wear it with care, never with coins or keys in my pocket or other mistreating. I still have a havey used old S2, S5, OP3, all worn for lots of time by me, all in perfect condition, not a single scratch (never had a screen protector on any of these). However my new S7 is totally ruined as the glass is all scratched. This cannot be Gorilla Glass. It even has a lot of very small scratches in perfectly predictable places on the screen where I touch more often, clearly developed by finger usage because it fits with most used places of on screen controls/menus. It is worse than a plastic protector actually. Tried to return after two weeks because it was clear that any easy touch causes a new scratch. I even doubted it is an original Samsung product. It went to official Samsung service and returned as not deffective (but proven to be genuine Samsung). After this experience I sworn never to buy a Samsung again.

Unlikely they would change the spec like that.. is your phone a copy?

Naked Screen or Screen Protector

With the lack of TGSP that fit properly or don't cut off the screen, my question is how many of you are rocking the screen naked?
For those of you who have, how has the screen held up? Any scratches or issues?

At the moment, no phone screen will stay 100% smooth and it will always has scratches all over the screen (at least the ones that are only visible on certain lighting condition) even when you're taking good care at it. I've been using phones without screen protector/cases for years and the only problem really is when the oleophobic coating wear off.

From my understanding, it is only scratched when something with a higher hardness rating scratches it. If you're careful with your phone, in theory it shouldn't have scratches right?
And normally how long do you feel that the oleophobic coating lasts?

Yes that is true and it includes those tiny sands that are present everywhere and even comes with the winds. No smartphone will be scratchless on screen for a day without screen protector when you're using it normally. You just don't see it. If you do not want scratches on your phone screen, use a protector because it will always scratch unless you keep it in a sealed box.
I ordered the IQ shield wet application screen protector. Used it on my s9 plus and pixel 2 xl and it looks and feels great
I have been using the following product for the last 3 phones with success. For everyday use, I have not noticed any scratches on my family's phones such S8+, S9, and OP6. I have no clue how this liquid stuff bond with the glass but it's more than placebo. There have been times when I forgot about change in my pocket or keys in the same pocket as phone-Did not get any scratches on the phone. Although, the product claims to bond with glass for a long time, in my experience, you need another coat every 6-8 months.

I used the pre-applied screen protector out of the box for about 2 weeks and I found it pretty good especially because it fitted just perfectly on the screen. But I removed it since I don't like screen protectors that much.
Just got OP6 two days ago. I usually go naked and never a scratch, but this weekend i'm going on a bit of an adventure on the sea, after that protector is going right off.

I've used IQ shield before, but I found that they are so hard to keep clean. They get so oily really quick. Do you have any tips?

How's the screen holding up now?
the tgsp from oneplus is a must. perfect fit, looks good, applies easily, and most importantly it has saved my phone screen once already. I will keep one on my phone.

Pretty good. I already dropped it 2 times without the screen protector and just the TPU case on it, and there are no visible scratches or something else.

Pixel 2 xl still holding up well after 5 months, s8 plus peeled out a little from the top left after an year, but I am a using a tight case on that one.
I love the super easy installation and no hassle of dealing with bubbles after it dries out completely. My friends think that I don't use a screen protector, it looks and feels like there is nothing on the screen.

I'll give that a shot once I put on the screen protector. Thank you!

I think that if the IQ Shield doesn't work for me I'll give it a shot with out a protector. I'm hoping I have the same luck you've had!

I ordered it and I'll let you know how it works once it arrives. Thanks for the suggestion!!
I've never used a screen protector and have never had visible scratches on the screen. I have a habit of always putting my phone in my right pocket on its own so there is nothing to scratch it.
