[Q] Best SIM card for UK Travel - Galaxy Tab 2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I will be in the UK (London, Edinburgh, Aberdeen, Inverness...) in a couple weeks and trying to figure out where to get a SIM card for my P5100.
Which providers will have the best coverage in the bands that P5100 supports?
I have been told “wait and buy a SIM card once you arrive in London”... But what stores can I walk into to buy a SIM?
Vodafone is the only provider I found that has stores you can walk into. Others (GiffGaff, Three, ...) you must have the SIM shipped to a UK address.
Thanks!

Go into any phone shop , o2 , Orange , Tmobile , Carphone Wharehouse , Phones4U. Websites have full details of plans and sim specs.
I have an 02 phone and a Tmobile one. Both pretty similar in service. o2 would be best for o2 to o2 calls and texts , maybe data .
T mobile is fairly cheap for cross network calls and data. Think Orange is fairly decent for Data , not sure about calls to be honest. I take it you will be using a " pay as you go" top up service ? Sims start at around £1.00 , Sometimes the shops give them away for free, just to get some custom as you normally top up with credit when you get a sim.Obviously check out the sims first to make sure they are what you want. Not really sure what kind of usage you need ?
Argos ( general store that sells absolutely everything) sell all sims at £1.00, just checked for you. They have stores nationwide and have branches in most towns. They even have a store locator on the website. Not sure if that would be any good for you , but its an option.
If your coming to London , bring a water proof jacket with you lol Oooh I love London

US Prepaid Providers - Which To Go For?

Hi
I have a load of trips to the states coming up, and its probably gonna be worthwhile for me to get a US prepaid SIM card. I assume that the major GSM providers cover the whole country these days? I'll be visiting Portland, Boston and Seattle.
Whats the best provider to go for, I want cheap(ish) calls to UK, full internet access via GPRS, and cheap txt messages?
My device is unlocked so no worries there
Nigel
I use T-Mobile and will be again when I return to the states. You can buy these sim cards on ebay and when used in conjunction with a calling card you can get really cheap calls.
I am going to New York soon and am considering buying a quantity of these cards to sell on ebay myself.
Here is the auction I had my eye on and the shop this guy runs from is on new york. The auction below has now finished but it gives you an idea.

traveling to india

i live in holland but will be traveling to punjab, india very soon. Anyone know the cheapest mobile obtion for me. As i am leaving behind a girlfriend who needs daily contact with me.
so - do i buy there - if yes what?
or do I buy in holland or england (stop on route for 2 days)
thanks for all your help
Re : travelling to india
in India, the most popular handsets are the GSM ones... u could get a GSM handset with u from holland or u could buy a new one here in India... a simple GSM handset would cost less than $70 here... you can buy a pre-paid SIM card from a local service provider here and that would cost u less than $5.
u should buy a connection from the operator, "spice" in punjab. they have got pretty good coverage in punjab. "airtel" is a fine option too
actually prepaid simcard costs around 2$-3$ at max
And then you recharge ...your incoming calls from your GF would be free..of course shed have to pay the International calling cost but someone has to pay.
If you take your card from Holland to india, then if she calls you - she has to pay for outgoing and you have tio pay for international roaming incoming.
Travelling in India
I have just arrived in India from UK. I have boght a Hutch SIM card, couple of dollars, and outgoing calls to UK &B Europe are 20 US cents a minute. A lot cheaper than UK rates.
Check on their web site

Getting a 3G SIM for my new PDA

Hi Folks,
The phone "officially" registered on my contract with Orange UK is an old 2G one for it has a 2G SIM. I'm looking to get a Touch HD which will need a 3G SIM.
Unfortunately, I'm told that Orange won't just give out shiny new 3G SIMs.
The obvious way to wheedle a 3G SIM out of Orange would be to simply "upgrade" to a cheap 3G phone - But because of the ancient tariff I'm on ("Everyday 50"), my local Orange shop wouldn't entertain ANY kind of upgrade, even though I am "out of contract", unless I change to a more expensive tariff !
Any ideas anyone ? "Dog ate my SIM"? Threaten to leave ?
Thanks in advance.
- Steve
If you go in somewhere like phones4u and tell them the contract you already have, they will often try to match it, sometimes by giving you a lump sum refund so that the monthly price is brought down to what you want.

That's an idea - but the plan I'm on at the moment suits me very well and is very cheap indeed (which is undoubtedly why they are not keen on giving me an upgrade phone). I can't see anyone easily matching it long-term.
I wonder if all SIMs used by orange are now 3G compatible, or would I really need to specifically get a 3G phone to get a 3G SIM?
Have you thought about going for one of the SIM only tariffs? That way you get the new SIM, the old number can be ported across and you get a lower monthly cost.
Just done it with Vodafone for their cheapest tariff and its costing me £10 for 75 mins and 500 texts on top of which i have added the £7.50 Mobile Internet. And the SIM i have is HSPDA compatible.
Oh, and one other possible plus, while it is a contract there is no long term tie in, its a rolling 30 day commitment.

Travelling to Spain from US. How do I get a simcard w/ data for the trip?

Hello,
We are traveling to Spain. Will be in Barcelona and then the Andalusia region. Will I have data access in these areas? What companies provide a SIM card I can use on my unlocked ATT phone?
Do you know how much they generally cost, and what sort of plans are offered?
Thank you for the help!
The main Carriers are MoviStar, Vodafone and Orange.
For 3G the best is Vodafone, about prices and roaming I think is the best you can get

Where do I buy one? At the airport, Or is that a ripoff?
I cant figure out how much they will cost for a 3g data package including voice.
Hows the coverage through Andalusia?
My mam went to dubai a couple of months back nd she bought a vodafone sim while she was there tho I dnt know what plans vodafone do for when u go abroad but I could ask her nd let u know
Sent from my E10i using XDA App
So Im in Jerez spain and everywhere I've been, every phone store says you can not buy a prepaid sim for data. I know they sell unlimited data sim cards that last 7 days for 29 euro. I see them all over the web, but the vodafone stores have no clue about this, they say only minutes! Maybe I need free gps program since I can not use google maps now. arg. Any suggestions??
thanks!
that depends.topons.com
you can have a look .maybe you can save more.
As a follow up:
I got a movifone sim from Corte Englis but could never get it activated right after over an hour I said screw it.
Then I got a YOIGO sim card from a mobile phone store. I think the store was actually Movifon. After spending 10 minutes telling me they dont make a simcard for data, I looked through the plan book and found one. They set up for me then. It was unlimited data, but I think it capped the speed after so much use. Because after a while of Google maps the speed got REALLY agonizingly slow. Then the next day it would be highspeed again.
It costs me like 15 Euro for 2 weeks.

Using phone in Turkey

Hi guys, im going to turkey for a 2 weeks next month. I was hoping to pick up a micro sim on PAYG or such so I can have 3G while im away without ending up getting a bill that would make a lottery winner choke.
From what I've read you have to register your IMEI number over there if you dont your phone stops working after 15 days, but as Im not staying for that long Im not sure it would matter. Though id appreciate some advice on that.
Also any advice on network to use to give cheap or unlimited data (I dont care about texts and calls), and possibly coverage (im staying around Marmaris) would also be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.
I'm from Holland and staying in turkey for some time. It's true after some days your phone gets blocked from using Turkish network, if you don't register it here. However as you said that won't be a problem for you. I suggest you to get an Avea sim card since I have had the best experience with them coverage wise. As far as I remember you can get 500mb and 100 minutes/SMS for 20 Turkish lira. Which is rather cheap. So I really suggest you to take an Avea sim card
Sent from a galaxy far away.
When I went to turkey i ended up using an Ekit international SIM (Get them on EBAY),
Data is 0.25gbp per Mb
I topped up by 10gbp online and got another 30gbp or so free to use, came back from turkey with about 6gbp left on the SIM.
It was a lot easier than trying to find the tax office, register the IMEI then find an mobile phone shop and get a SIM - more time to be on the beach/by the pool
Enjoy Turkey, Happy travels
Gavin
