Does anyone know how to disable the ability to slide between keys on the keyboard in JB?
My tablet (transformer prime) on JB does not do this, and I find it annoying on my phone because as I go for another letter, the keyboard always thinks I hit the letter next to the one I intended.
Or does anyone know of any 3rd party keyboards that would achieve this (though I prefer to somehow disable stock). Thanks
Do u mean swype.....???
If so go into setting
And switch to android keyboard

Why is it when i install a different keyboard it wont override the stupid HTC keyboard?
For example, i wantto install the droid x keyboard, but when i go to activate it in the keyboard settings, it leaves the HTC keyboard as the main keyboard. Is there something im missing?

Try reinstalling if you get a force close. Go into Settings>Language and Keyboard and check your settings for the custom keyboard.

[Q] Setting up swiping keyboard 3.2
I think since 3.2 that the "swyping" keyboard ( onscreen) isn't working as often in "swype" mode. Is there some finer control over that?
Thanks,

Onscreen keyboard tracing control.
I had forgotten I'd posted this for months, then just searched and found it and realized I still don't understand if there's any control we've got over when the onscreen keyboard works in 'tracing' mode, and when it doesn't.
It does seem to me that it works much less in tracing mode than when I got it. I've got the 3.2 SW, rooted, and the stock ROM and Kernel aboard, so it is likely not anything I've changed.
When I look at the keyboard settings I don't see anything that addresses this so any help would be appreciated,
Thanks,
Hashi

so when i use mt bluetooth keyboard i get a popup saying i need to change to samsung keyboard to use it. if i click ok or press back it will change the keyboard. this is annoying because my samsung keyboard is regional i.e. uk and my bluetooth keyboard is us the same as thumb keyboard (the onscreen i use) so when it changes keyboards some of the symbols are different.
so my question is, can i stop this from happeing?

Wanting to know the same thing - or even if any of the custom ROMs has this "fixed."
The app External keyboard helper pro allows you to set the language, so you can set it the same as your other keyboards and it has some other helpful settings too. Maybe this is what you're looking for?

Not sure, might try it out. I never had these keyboard issues in ICS and was hoping I was just missing a setting. Have you tried out this app for this purpose? Does it work well?
I realize I liked the Samsung keyboard (I switched to CM so it is gone). I used to use smartkeyboard but they've never added slide typing or whatever you call it when you slide your finger around the keyboard.
So anyway, does anyone really love a particular keyboard and why?

Have you tried SwiftKey Tablet?
It's not free but it has the swiping feature, and in landscape mode it splits into two halves so you can type with your thumbs.
The Google Keyboard is free, and also has the swipe feature.

Thanks for the suggestion. I actually found Swype (also not free) which I really love. It has every feature I could ask for except for one thing. It doesn't have a built in button for disappearing the keyboard. Most of the time - but not always - a button appears on my nav bar. Other than that I would call it the perfect keyboard.

So the current ROM(liquidics for droid2) doesn't support the physical keyboard very well. The lights stay on when its closed and pulling it out doesn't change the orientation. Is there a way I could pull keyboard modules or whatever handles the keyboard from another ROM that works (AOKP or CM9) and patch them over it?

Have you tried installing a third party app yet? E.g. TouchPal X ?

Not third-party, but I did install Google Keyboard. I don't see how that would effect the physical keyboard much as I ran a ROM before where the android keyboard service kept crashing, but the slide-out still worked.

Hardware buttons and softkeys are controlled by keyboard app too as far as i know.
I think you're right about the virtual keyboard handling the physical one, but I think Android itself controls the back lights and orientation. I've tried some third party apps and they don't fix it.
