[Q] Need MicroSD card help - Asus Transformer TF700

I need help with what my TF700T is doing with my 32 gb MicroSD card.
I bought a good quality card and inserted it. No problems.
I connected my TF700T to my Windows computer via the. AUSUS USB cable
No problem, Windows recognized two different drives.
I added some folders to my MicroSD card and copied some music and video to it.
Put the card back in.
Then I noticed something weird.
The TF700T created a mst/SDCARD/ folder and it thinks that is where my MicroSD card is, but those files and folders are really on the internal.
My MicroSD card is under the /removable/MicroSD/ folder, that it thinks is on the internal Memory.
Do I have to re-format or rename my MicroSD card?
Thanks,
Jon

I'm a bit confused by your description. I don't know what the prefix mst means. If you are on ICS your micro sd should be at Removable and your internal storage should be called Sdcard (it changes with Jellybean). If the files you added to your microsd are actually on internal sdcard, maybe you made a mistake and copied them to the wrong drive in windows. Or did you create nested folders?

+1 sounds like you copied them to the wrong card.
/mnt/sdcard is the internal memory.
/removable/microsd is the external sd card.

My mistake on the description

I made a mistake, NOT mst, I mean mnt.
I am using a Asus TF700T Android 4.03.
No, I didn't create the folders on the wrong device.
Those folders sdcard and mnt/sdcard were not created by me.
Thanks,
Jon

No. That's just want ti does, as was eluded to in above posts. It's just an odd labeling.

I am sorry for being so lame, but I don't know what you mean?
Thank you,

what you describe in your original post is what the Infinity does when you have an SDHC/SDXC card installed. You don't need to format it.
I would just adding that seeing SD Card and Removable was just odd labeling, compared to other mobile devices because we're not use to thinking of storage build into a device as an SD Card. Although, I will say it's accurate because we can use it as such. The removable is accurate because we can remove that storage.
Hopefully that makes more sense now. It's perfectly clear in my head, LOL.

Thank you for your thoughts. Maybe it is mybrain, but I don't understand it, and it does cause issues for me.
The crd inserted in my Asus TF700T is a MicroSD card.
I can, if I choose to, insert a SD card in my docking station/keyboard, but I have not done that yet.
I don't understand what you mean by odd labeling compared to other devices? Personally, I never buy a device that does not have an expansion card. This goes back to Palm devices as well as my Samsung Tablet and my Cowan portable multimedia devices. Also my digital cameras.
If I go to do a backup that is supposed to go to my microSD card, it will look to backup it up to the Internal storage, in the /mnt/sdcard/......./ folder. It won't look at the expansion card.
Some applications see it, some don't.
There is some sort of confusion how the TF700T thinks where the microSD card is and if ie t exists.
When I first got the TF700T, I did not have an expansion card in it. I put it in about a week after I started using it. Could it be that because I put it in after starting to use it, it got confused and created this infrustructure of folders on the Internal drive thinking that there is an external drive ?
In the file directory, I cannot get it to change things so that when I go to mymusic or audio, to look at my microsd card, which is where I store my audio.
I am really confused. If I plug it into a PC, while the microsd card is istalled, Windows sees it properly and it creates two virtual drives that I can get into with Windows Explorer, no problem.
Something is messed up, but I don't know what it is.
Thank you,
Jon

maybe this will help, pictures:
From Windows File Explorer, which you have seen. This is just a reference.

Using ES File Explorer, you can see
This is at the root directory. The SDCard is the internal storage. Removable my SDXC card.
As for your music, it may be more an issue with the music you're using. I have encountered a problem with some apps where I cannot access SDHC/XC card. One example is Docs2Go. It won't go to the root directory on the local file selection, just do to /SDCard/, or in other words, just to top internal storage directory. I can open up the files using ES explorer directly and choosing the appropriate app to launch.
So you may want to use your file explorer/browser app, suck as ES explore, File Explorer, and so forth, and see if you can access your SDHC card while on the Infinity. I haven't loaded music on my SDXC card, or video files. I know I was able to access video on my previous SDHC card I had installed with MoboPlayer.
Hopefully that helps. All my answers on based on using the tablet only, no dock since I don't own it. As based on previous comments, which you only confirmed, I assumed you were familiar enough with having SDHC cards in mobile devices and how it worked. Thus, to me it looked more like an issue of know where to look.

[Q] MicroSD doesn't show up when connected to PC?

Thanks guys, I hope someone knows how to fix this.
When I connect my Asus EEE Pad Transformer to my PC(Windows 7) via the USB cable, I can see on the PC a new device named "Computer\Transformer TF101\Device Storage" which is my built-in 16 GB, but there is no device for the Micro SD card - it is actually visible in the EEE Pad (at /Removable/MicroSD) and works pretty normally within the Pad.
How do I transfer my files to the MicroSD from the PC then?
I don't want to take out the card and use a card reader, btw.

I would like a response to this as well.
Just for curiosity... you don't see any folder named similar to "sdcard" inside the visible 16gb directory?
Go to:
http://www.asus.com/Eee/Eee_Pad/Eee_Pad_Transformer_TF101/
Download tab and then pick your OS and then download PC sync software?

It happened once or twice that I found a folder named 'MicroSD' in the 16gb directory - it is indeed the MicroSD card, but now it is gone and I have no idea why.

Yes I did. but I havn't tried factory reset yet.
More than connecting transformer to PC by the usb cable, I usually use some app like "Websharing" or "WiFi File Explorer PRO". Sadly there's no way to upload data to the microSD card using one of these apps either
Until now, I've been removing microSD card and putting it in my USB all in one media card reader!
well what you can do is simply copy it to internal and then use the HC filemanager to copy it to your microSD, that's what I do.

A good workaround, but quite frankly, these are the sorts of little inexcusable things that companies need to check for before they push out products. Hopefully Asus fixes this very soon in an OTA soon. There's absolutely no reason why the MicroSD shouldn't show up as a separate drive when you connect the device to your computer. (Even my Nook classic does that!)

Well you can always get a Xoom (which doesn't have microSD support at all).
Pretty sure they figured rather a functioning microSD card slot that can't be accessed by USB than no microSD card slot at all.
I'm sure it'll be fixed in an update.

Asus seems to have put together a fantastic device, so I have no desire to choose a Xoom over it. My issue is with the increasingly prevalent over-reliance on OTAs to fix simple things that should have included from the start. (And that comment by no means applies exclusively to Asus.)
True, but when you buy a honeycomb device at this stage you pretty much are always buying on potential, since honeycomb is really new and even google admitted it was rushed to market. With that come the inevitable gripes and snags.
I haven't had any issues accessing the micro sd from my computer. If you have the MTP drivers loaded from asus's website should just show up at the bottom as a "music player" that you click on and shows device.
In the device is all the folders on the internal sd card. One of the folders is MicroSD which is your micro sd card.
I've dumped about 30 gb of stuff on my micro sd without any problems.

Quick question, when the "sdcard" folder is inside the visible built-in storage directory, what is the total capacity that your OS shows? It's the built-in storage + SD Card? like 16gb + 32gb = 48gb? or how?
Sd Card
Mine shows up in file manager no problem -
/removable/microsd/
It shows up on my computer -
/device storage/micro sd

When you hover over the device in my computer, it only shows availablity of the internal storage, and right clicking and hitting properties on the microsd folder does show how much space is taken up on the card, but haven't seen a way to show totaly capacity and how much is left in windows.
Easiest way is just check storage under the settings on the tablet.
just so you guys know, I noticed your PC wont see the microSD card folder if you dont pop it in/out after every time you reboot the tablet.
Pretty sure this is a restriction with Honeycomb. The design was intended for internal storage (hence the dynamic internal flash storage). External is just for media.
Seems the fix needs to come from Android devs and applied to the framework. Would not hold my breath for that, since if you keep up with the Android dev forums, they were not fans of adding external storage in the first place. The OEMs (except Motorola) did their own workarounds just to get stuff working as is. Seems a minor miracle that Asus were able to get the keyboard and its storage functions working.
Guys thank you all for the replies and discussions.
I replaced my MicroSD card today and was surprised to see the new card appeared as 'Computer\Transformer TF101\Device Staroage\MicroSD' in my PC!
Now seems it has something to do with the card itself - no idea what it is though. Both cards worked pretty fine within the Pad btw.

[Q] MicroSD problems

Hi all,
First post as a new Asus Transformer owner:
I seem to be having problems with the MicroSD card, I have a brand new 32GB card, formatted as FAT32, it can be read and written to correctly on my pc.
When inserted into the Transformer I get a "Preparing external storage" message, LOST.DIR is created on the card, and the card is visible as /Removable/MicroSD/.
All good so far but then most apps can't see anything on the card and everything seems to be looking in /mnt/sdcard/ (internal storage) for files.
Examples -
I create a nook folder on the microsd card, then a my documents folder under that and place epub files in there but the nook app can't find files either in /Removable/MicroSD/Nook/MyDocuments or /mnt/sdcard/Nook/MyDocuments
Aldiko book reader - I hit home then sdcard and it displays the contents of /mnt/sdcard with no way to navigate to /Removable/MicroSD
Dropbox places files in /mnt/sdcard not on the MicroSD card
The Music App however is successful in automatically finding music in /Removable/MicroSD/Music
I have tested this with another (8gb) card and the same behavior happens.
Is this normal? if so how do I get the apps to look in (and store files in) the MicroSD card?
I am no expert but I think this is one of the "bugs" that need to be worked on in Android 3.x. It is most likely the reason why the XOOM still has no official microSD support. How are you going to mount the internal memory as /sdcard and in addition use a removable medium, also called /sdcard? Unfortunately, /sdcard is commonly the removable medium so I am curious as to what the solution will be! For now we just have to "suck it up" until someone smart comes up with a work-around

[Q] external SD card questions

i'm new to android so please bear with me.
i have a 32GB SD class 4 in my phone. it's been formatted so all it has is the lost.dir (i'm on a mac)
since there are no folders there - how do i gets apps to use it? where do i put music and other files? i have podcasts and other stuff i'd like to drag over but i'm not understanding how the different apps would see it.
i can move some apps to SD card but i think it just moves them to the internal SD card.
it seems that there are 2 SD cards in the phone but no way to differentiate between the 2.
also it sometimes takes forever for the gx2 to recognize the card, its kind of annoying. is having a class 10 better for this?
I use filemanager from the market and it recognizes my external as........"_externalSD" also allows me to transfer files between the two.

When you have your phone plugged in pull down the alert bar on the top of the screen and press the "USB Connection" option. It should ask you if you want to turn USB mode on and have a picture of an Android. This will allow you to mount your internal and external sd as if they were regular flash sticks. You can then copy whatever you want to them. I also like to use drop box in combination with Astro for moving things to and from the cloud.

1. G2x has the internal sd card partitioned into 2 parts (1 for OS & apps & other for storage & apps).
2. Sd card's class does help but it is not something important until you're running a high def video.
3. Use any file explorer app (File expert etc) for copying files from Internal SD Card to External SD Card.
4. Most of the app's setting menu gives you an option to physically select the storage destination folder i.e. external sd card.
Hope I helped.

Yes, just simply copy the entire FOLDER of the particular file to your External SD Card & if in future, if u download something directly from your phone then simply just copy/paste it from your using any file manager app.

so i have the phone connected to the computer and I see 2 No Name disks. That's fine. I put a folder called music at the root level of the 32GB card. Now I find that folder in File Expert and I go to play something and it says that file isn't supported. I tried Google Music and Doubletwist. Just mp3's from a CD. are there certain settings for android i need to know about? and do i need to go to File Expert to play this music everytime? Or should I be going through doubletwist on my mac and using it like itunes?
thanks you any help, i'm pretty clueless with this aspect of android right now, trying to catch up.
also both SD cards randomly unmount themselves. is there a reason for this or a way to prevent this?

Ok. After reading your problems, here are my suggestions:
1) Copy your 32 GB SD Card files on your computer.
2) Format your 32 GB card. Replace all files back in it.
3) Stop worrying about putting certain files (pics, music) in a root folder. Simply just put any files OR folders inside the Sd card.
4) When it comes to File sharing, think of Android in the same category as Windows.
I hope I helped.

Transcend Micro SD 32gb - memory loss , corrupt

What causes this on my memory card?
I had about 10GB of music syncing to it overnight. After it finished the next day it said 18GB free on card... later today, I decided to flash a new ROM, I go to flash the .zip in Recovery and the .zip file is corrupt(bad). After a second look- the card now says 29gb free after that whole long music sync ! What is going on here
I have reformatted the card before because of files getting corrupted and I am about to see if transcend can't send me a new one unless someone here knows something else that might be causing this data corruption to happen.

29GB is the correct capacity. You will always lose about 10% due to the difference in how manufacturers rate storage space and OS's recognize them. Basically, it is base 8 math vs base 10. 29 is normal.
fake or no?
I had 18gb free on the sd after the music sync. Silly me didn't check for the music to see if it was there. Later that day I went to transfer a new ROM to the card and it read at 29gb like I hadn't even synced all that music AT ALL !
I just can't believe I got another fake memory card... this sucks. I didn't think a class 6 transcend 32gb would F**K me over like this thats all.
How can my files get corrupted other than the card being a fake?

Not sure I understand why you think you've a fake. Is it because it only shows as 29g? If so, then you have to understand the difference between marketing and engineering. The Samsung card that came with my phone shows as 7.39g under properties. And is listed as having over 7.9g if you count the individual cells. The first total is engineering, the 2nd the marketing #. Or is it because you lost the music? With flash memory, any number of things can cause a wipe - ranging from user error to static shock to failure of the memory cells themselves. And flash memory always comes with extra cells built in to compensate for cells dying.
I will just transfer one artist at time and see if it stays on it. I think I have a corrupt card because after filling space on it at a certain point the rest of the files will be inaccessible.
There are apparently quite a few fakes coming from Asia. I had a Kingston 32gb class 6 card that did the same thing. After waiting for over an hour for my files to transfer, I unplugged my phone from the pc. When the SD card mounted, there was no music on it. I did some google searching, tried various methods of formatting, used a card reader to transfer files. When using the card reader, my pc would show that the files were there but when I put the card in my Inspire, there was a blank card. When I put the card back in the reader it was blank. When trying to play music that showed on the card right after a transfer, I would get an error message that Windows could not read from source. I ended up buying a PNY class 10 card from Newegg. Problem solved.

I asked if the lifetime warranty is still valid purchasing from ebay, and they replied-
Since the card has a lifetime warranty, you can do the return without the receipt.

Looks like I will be taking this route if the card corrupts my files again...Its too bad I should get a refund from the ebay seller , but I would be better off just sending this one in for a new one.
It does surprise me to get a defective product from Transcend- they seem to have a good reputation but everyone get defective products now and then I suppose.
Lifetime Warranty +1
i might have to look into that. 16gb seemed like plenty at first, but now im needing more.

I used to buy micro SD's from ebay and ended with a few fakes. I found a program called h2testw 1.4 that writes to the SD then reads it back. It will let you know if the card files written are either corrupted or the SD is a fake. I dont use any SD cards without testing it first. I went thru the same issue where the cards would show their gb but when I transfered files to them it would say transfered but the phone could not see them, turned out to be fakes. Now the test does take a while as I recall I ran a 32gb card thru it and it took a little under 4 hrs so you do have to be patient with the test. All depends on size of SD.

I can copy to the internal storage just fine, but if I try to drag and drop to the SD card I get the device has stopped responding or its disconnected error. I have windows 8.1, I'm rooted and drivers work fine, adb and fastboot functional, SD card is PNY 64gb xc formatted in NTFS. I also took out the micro SD card and put it in my laptop and was able to write to it just fine, the files even show up through the shield when I put the SD card back in and reconnected to laptop. So who knows what I'm missing?

You cant copy paste you have to use the applications menu and theres an option for move to sd. Never used it but i know its there.
Nvidia Shield Root and More
Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way.

Yeah, you can't do it through windows. With a file explorer, you could physically get the file to move but it wouldn't run. I believe with the built in option for moving files to SD, it will only move the .apk file, and not the actual data. So if you have a 3mb .apk, and a gig worth of data, it's pretty much useless. There is a tool on the play store called folder mount which basically allows you to swap mount points, and it allows you to save everything to SD, you have to have root for it though.

Not a problem, I used your excellent root tool kit!! Today we learned a big lesson in fat32 and NTFS formats and what the Shield can and cannot do with each. Fat32 ftw

Haha nice. Yeah fat32 is the way to go unless you have a giant sdcard then exfat works better. If i remember right fat32 has a 4gb file size limit.

So the shield will read and write to a 64gb card formatted in exfat?

The built in move to SD will actually move the android/obb file that corresponds to the app, it will also create mount points on the SD for it. I'm not sure if it moves android/data though, I just haven't tried it, most big games use obb files though.
I have some weird problems with my 64GB card formatted to fat32. It all works perfectly for some time, then the SD will become read only to the Shield and I have to format it again. :\ I'm not sure if it's my SD card, the SDXC formatted to fat32, <that and using the built in move to SD, etc.
I treat the SD card like dark magic, when it's working I don't mess with the thing.
I hope that Nvidia releases an update that focuses on better SD support, it seems like they're planning something.

I gotcha thanks. I hadnt actually used it yet but have used it on other platforms and it was pretty much worthless. I had assumed it was the same since it was on my other devices. Thanks for clearin that up.
