Hi,
So basically I got a Verizon galaxy s3 running stock 4.0.4 and updated to the latest software from Samsung and Verizon. I've been told to root and am a bit skeptical. Is a hard brick a realistic possibility and what other problems can I possibly encounter. I don't want to break this $800 device but I want to enjoy it to its fullest. I want to run a rom that just gives me stock jelly bean with no touchwiz or anything with good performance and battery life. Can someone please reply to these questions with some answers and possibly tell me the steps necessary to get this to work for me if it is not a risky process. Maybe refer to some videos or other posts? Also do I need to check other compatibilities like kernel version etc?
Any help is GREATLY APPRECIATED.

No one is going to tell you you can't break your phone, because you can. And the only one who is going to be responsible for it is you. That said, the way the S3 is designed, with (someone please correct me if I'm wrong) a separate space for the recovery partition (unlike my old DX), it isn't likely. After you root and install cwm, you can always re-flash with recovery, or if things really go sideways, cable it to the PC and use the same method you use for Root66 - ODIN. As for "how dangerous is it?", well, obviously everyone on the forum has done it, or is about to, so....
Search for Root66 Verizon That is where you will get started.
Then after root66, run the ez bootloader unlock app if you want to rom it. Oh, and back up your imei before you start flashing roms.
Perhaps I am overly cautious, but I've not yet seen a pattern to the lost IMEI condition after ROMming, so only have rooted (and then unrooted) when I need that level of access to perform certain functions - such as using Titanium Backup or changing file permissions, etc.
These methods of rooting and unrooting have been very quick and pain-free for me.
I have decided to put off a custom recovery and custom ROMs until the lost IMEI conditions have been identified. The bricking possibilities are less a concern, because I've always been careful about customizing my Android phones.

Sure, though I've seen mixed results after applying a backup because something went wrong with the IMEI. Owners who can't get out of roaming, etc. Recovery doesn't appear to be fool-proof, but I'm open to more information.
I'd rather find out what is causing those problems in the first place before experiencing the issue and not knowing why.

You can do it without an SD card, however I don't think it is a great idea...
You want do a backup before you do anything like flashing, etc.. the backup goes onto your SD card so if you run into issues and have to reset, the flash drive is not affected. I don't think it is the best idea to put your backups onto the internal storage.

There appears to currently be no danger with IMEI now. There is nvbackup/nvrestore in terminal, the synergy flashable zip, and several manual recovery tools even if you didn't make a backup - including a fix for roaming.

I do all my CWM backups to the internal storage as my 64 gig card is not FAT32.
I have backed up & restored perfectly fine from the internal storage.
I left my card at the default file system as I don't want to be limited to a 4 gig file size. I do copy the backups to my PC weekly however.....

This is true.. I wasn't thinking about that. But when I said i didn't think it was a good idea, I didn't mean that because it wouldn't work; only that if your backup was on the internal storage and you had to do a wipe your backup would be gone.
Of course if you are backing up to a PC, then so much the better!

i was a little scared also but i did it a cpl times already.i thought i bricked my phone so i took it to verizon and got a replacment.come to find out i just had to put it in download mode and flash a stock rom..its easy once u understand a little..i just downloaded a rom [aokp[ jb to my computer u will love this one] then gapps and put them on sd card. i downloaded ez unlock and ez recovery from play store. u also have to install clock work mod thats was the easiest for me. unlock the bootloader first from ez unlock then go into ez recovery and reboot recovery. before u wipe everything go into sd card and make sure the rom and gapps are there.once u see them then wipe data, cache and delvic cache. then flash rom then flash gapps then reboot.BEFORE U WIPE DATA MAKE A BACKUP OF UR STOCK ROM.!!!! SORRY so long .. good luck u will love aokp jb 4.1.1

its pretty important.. nothing can go wrong by backing it up. once you root it back it up just in case so your new phone wont be a $600 paperweight!

That's good to hear. I figured I'd make stock backup too. Having stock rooted won't mess it up I'd presume? Is there an app that does it too?
I have flashed all the roms available, including CM10 and had no trouble with IMEI. Always good to backup though. There's a fairly simple process in the CM10 OP.

once rooted and you have installed clockwork mod recovery or TWRP you can make a back up of your whole phone..this will not mess up anything. You can get these two recoveries by using the ez recovery app on google play....... To make a backup in the recovery it will say backup and restore as one of the main options

Sorry I don't think I was clear, I know about ROMs cause I do it on my Incredible. What I meant was backing up my IMEI

O my bad you have to be rooted in order to run the operation through a terminal emulator app
If you poke around in development there's one for Mac/Ubuntu (I think Ubuntu anyway) that does root and clockwork recovery from your computer, and that's what I use because it's pretty quick and easy.
If it can ever be important you should make a backup of it though. Since fixing things is always a process, having comprehensive resources for it can trim a lot of time.
Using QPST it only took me like 5 minutes to back mine up. Really simple. Then I put a copy of the file on my HD, on my phone's SD card and one on my Google drive. Now I'm sure I can't lose it. LoL they are small files too. Under 500kb

I lost my IMEI and other connection data with a bad flash of a CM10 nightly. I had to do a lot of stuff, including manually typing in my IMEI using QPST and then returning my phone to the Verizon store for them to do some factory-reset style stuff to it before I got connectivity again. (Even though I was bone-stock with a re-locked bootloader they still knew I had rooted and messed with the kernel and other stuff, btw). And its not completely correct, even though I am in my home service area I constantly have the flashing grey triangle that says I am doing international roaming. Pretty weird. So long story short, backup IMEI and everything else BEFORE FLASHING ANYTHING.

Is there a high chance of losing it on flashing though? I just plan to flash CM10 really.

Yes, there's always a chance you'll loose it. Better to be safe, than sorry. It only takes a couple of minutes to backup and it may save you the hassle of an exchange.
I backed up the IMEI using this method ( QPST) http://rootzwiki.com/topic/32397-tutorial-imei-backup-nv-with-qpst-us-variants/ It doesn't say should i reset the modems to mtp-adb?

thanks bro i did that one first but they say do all of them just in case. so i did .
I have rooted my 4.0.4 gs3 Verizon with the VRLG7 baseband. I unlocked the bootloader as well. I have read a ton of stuff on flashing roms and it doesn't seem to all click to me. All I have done is use the command prompt tool to root it and then ez unlock to unlock it. I want to get an AOKP jelly bean rom but I don't know what to do now as far as recovery and all that stuff. I don't have an SD card but I don't care about wiping my phone since I only have a couple apps and my contacts which are stored through my Google account. Anyone care to guide me step by step on what to download to manage roms and what to do from here to get to AOKP?

Follow one of the three very well written guides in the Dev section. Your next step is a custom recovery (CWM or TWRP), then you'll need to use the guide in the IMEI backup thread to make sure you don't cause yourself a headache, then go into the original development thread and flash away til' your hearts content.
It will help you lots to read all the guides and threads for the roms you're interested in, etc so that you don't panic if something goes wrong. At some point, it's likely you'll soft brick so make sure you understand how to use ODIN in the event you need to get back to where you started, etc. Download files / programs needed, etc. to your computer so they're handy and you have a personal library of things you will need.
PS- having an SD card even if it's just a 1gb or 2gb card will help you big time and make it a bit easier for you.
Does it matter if I didn't use ODIN to originally root my gs3 but will eventually use it if I soft brick?

Download the latest CWM Recovery and flash it as you did the previous, would be smart to get the CWM Touch version.
Well lets see with a rooted phone, you can install apps from various APK files, some of which allow you to use your device as a tethered modem for a laptop or Tablet. What more can you do with a rooted phone, well you can install various custom ROM's, but if you are not familiar with that aspect, READ, READ, and READ some more take several days to read on how to do it, before you download anything to do it. NO ONE will take responsibility for anything that you do to your device, except for yourself. You brick it you buy it.
There are a LOT of custom ROMs out there, read up on them, and find one that suits you. Don't just flash the first one you see, be as best informed as you can possibly be.

Get Super Manager from market. Copy the whole EFS folder to an external sd card. Then from there copy it over to your comp. This way you have two backups of the whole thing.
My phone is rooted, what would be the best way for me to unlock the tethering option without having to pay for it? I would prefer a way to do it like by root explore and changing some values as to installing an app....any input would be great. And yes I'm rooted on stock ics, from att

After I had rooted mine, I went in and was able to use tethering WITHOUT an app, nor making changes. (that I recall). Mine was still ICS Stock but rooted.

Flash the moded 6.0.15 cwm recovery from sk8erwitskil in the dev section and it has the option to backup the efs as an img..Just copying the efs folder will not do a crap for you cause the permissions are messed up this way...And by the way learn to do things by your own (by reading here) ... Its xda here not a cooking forum and links to google play store..
Ok so I have a rooted infuse 4G and am a complete noob when it comes to flashin roms and mods... I am still on the froyo 2.2.1and hate it lol. Which brings me to my first query, I know its possible to upgrade my android version to the GB and JB with multiple methods but I'm extremely scared that I'm going to brick my phone. It was some forums on here that helped me decide to root my phone so now I'm hoping that you guys can help me take the next step. So whats the safest, easiest way to upgrade my os.. Odin didnt work and I no longer have a computer, so heimdall is out as well. Oh not sure if this is important but I'm not registered on any network nor have I unlocked my phone's sim. Well that's a start. I really hate froyo 2.2.1 so please if anyone can help I definitely could use it.

From Froyo 2.2.1, there is an official build GB 2.3.6 UCLB3 out for the Infuse.
You will need a computer though. Without a computer to restore your phone to stock from soft bricking, you should not be flashing anything. It may be possible for you to bring your phone to an AT&T store and have them update you if you don't have a PC. You will need a computer to root the GB UCLB3.
Where to start? Read the Q/A as much as you can. Then move into the Development section.

Thanks qkster.. I really appreciate your help. I follow alot of your threads and am so hapoy thst there are infuse users that actually are willing to take the device to the next lvl. Now for another question.
Will it be easier to flash the jellybean 4.1.1 from the froyo or the gb? Or would it be possible to just flash a higher kernel? I'm not syre if that would help me or not, I really want to speed up my infuse and stop it from rebooting so much.

You cannot flash JB from Froyo and need to go to Gingerbread, then ICS then JB.

Would it be best to use kies to update to GB? I'm a little concerned as to what would happen to my Infuse all around.. What will need backed up?
I have titanium backup but if the app gets wiped wont i lose all my back-ups? For some reason it wont sync to my dropbox app force closes every time I try. Sorry about all the questions I'm just short on the amount of time I am able to browse threads at the moment but I do have use of a computer for awhile so that kinda helps.
I personally prefer using odin or heimdall. Don't quite trust kies and it often gives issues.
all mayor changes will occur on system partitions. Your internal sd will remain untouched, and there you will titanium backups. Just reinstall TB app later and restore apps, not data.

Will this even work if i'm not registered to a network with the phone still locked? And I see that it will also unroot my phone which isnt a problem I'm just curious whether or not I can still root with super one click or if i need a different root tool?

It doesn't matter if your phone is unregistered and locked. You cannot use SuperOneClick on Gingerbread. What you should do is (this is the Heimdall version):
Flash this rooted version of stock GB:

Oh and what apps do i need on my phone in order to flash? And I mean absolutely need. I've also noticed that most threads say to format my mounted sd card But i really dont want to do that if i dont need to.
It should all be bundled together. Heimdall is a java based interface so it should just open up. Sorry, it's been a long time and I'm an Odin person!
You don't need any apps on your phone. When you flash, everything on the small partition will be wiped (apps, app data, etc). Flashing will not usually wipe your pictures, videos etc. but it's always a good idea to back up. For now, don't worry about formatting anything. When you get to ICS, you'll need to format as it says in the instructions. Otherwise, if it works, don't fix it!
When you flash ICS and JB, all you need to do is to put the zip files on to your internal SD card (not the one you can take out). You can then flash from CWM (which will already be on your phone - don't download Rom Manager).
Once again thank you all. I'm running GB and loving it. My fiance is shocked at how much help I needed though usually I'm the person everyone comes to with their tech issues LOL. But I absolutely did not want to mess my infuse up. I thought I did but the issue was such a noob mistake that I had to smack myself in the face at my stupidity. Forgot to unzip the cwm ect folder I downloaded. XD not sure I'm ready to try ICS or JB yet though.

The odd thing is you could have updated to GB through AT&T and used mini kies. But at least you are now rooted and able to go to ICS and JB.
Read the instructions on the next step before moving on.

Kinda wish I would have done it that way... I wanted to get some practice flashing roms tho. And now my phone is bootlooping, computer says the device is incompatible I can only get into the samsung recovery even tho the rom i flashed had cwm packaged in. I tried to change my boot animation following the steps provided in my boot animation thread then again with the steps in tsqers rom thread I apologise if thats mispelled. I tried updating from sd but get a sign error Can get into download mode but same issue with it being incompatible usb device. I tried holding down the power button for 1 minute and then rebooting no luck there. I tried wiping data/fact. reset,... nothing. I tried wipe cache partition,...still looping.

Which ROM did you flash and which CWM recovery can you see (which version)?
I used the http://forum.xda-developers.com/show...43&postcount=2 thread to get the rooted rom UCLB3 -DEBLOATED-ODEX - ROOTED - BUSYBOX- STOCK KERNEL.
Saved I think.
So I finally Got it to connect to my comp and re-flashed the rom can i get a link to an ICS heimdall one click package to flash before restoring anything and this happening again?

I'm seriously considering rooting my phone, only because I'd like to get back some of the memory taken up by a million useless T-Mobile and Samsung apps. I'm tired of having to remove apps I actually like in order to put new apps on my phone, and I'm tired of getting notifications that crapware I never even open has been updated. I'm kind of at that break point where if I have to install/reinstall the OS, reconfigure all my settings, reinstall all my apps, and restore my contacts/messages/emails, it's not worth it.
Can I root my phone without having to do all that, or without first having to downgrade to Gingerbread? If the answer is yes, I can find the appropriate rooting guide, unless someone wants to point to a good one.

You don't need to downgrade at all. Check the t769 bible , a sticky. In the Dev section for a link to rooting

Checked out the T769 bible like you said. Tried rooting on my work computer, but apparently the AV/Firewall won't let the device drivers install, so I'll have to do that when I get home.
So I can root to gain superuser access and then use a third-party app to remove bloatware. Can you flash an upgraded OS (I'm seeing a lot of enthusiasm for CWM) without losing data? Or would that big a step require wiping the device?

Flashing a new ROM will wipe your data.
I ran my Blaze w/rooted stock for a while, & it was definitely a better user experience, but I've since flashed Racing11696's AOKP & haven't looked back. And it seems like a PITA to re-install all of your apps & redo all of your settings, but it's a couple of hours of work to make your smartphone experience better all around.

Removing bloatware was the very first thing I did upon rooting my device. CWM is a ROM manager used for flashing the upgraded OS of your choice. It is not a ROM itself. Flashing a custom ROM does require deleting some data. So before flashing any custom ROMs be sure to make a backup. I've used Nandroid Online from the app store to make the physical back up (store on ext SD to be safe) Back up takes five to ten minutes. After booting your new custom ROM download Nandroid Manager to restore all your apps and app data. You can restore text messages as well. Its a very useful tool especially if you flash a ROM, don't like it and want to pick up where you left off before you flashed. It's like system restore for your PC.
