ADW Launcher - smoother, and more usable
Some one posted this over in Cyanogens site and on here.. (I don't take credit)
ADW Launcher - smoother, and more usable
1) Screen Preferences - Desktop scrolling speed - set to something low-ish like 150-200, default settings are just plain moronic here. Desktop overshoot should be fine at 30 or 40.
2) Drawer Settings - Horizontal Drawer definite on (this is far superior to the scrolling drawer if you have more than a few apps, and feels much smoother).
3) Drawer Settings - Zoom effect speed - 400 is a decent setting, default was way too high.
4) Drawer Settings - Columns/Rows - 4x4 is a nice setting for portrait, if you don't like a crammed screen.
5) System Preferences - Wallpaper Hack - check this. If you have issues, change wallpapers to something of a sane size.
6) System Preferences - Use Screen Cache - check this.
7) System Preferences - Scrollable Widget support - you should start with this unchecked. Only check it if you have issues with some widgets. In my experience it didn't make a huge difference in performance or smoothness.
There you go, 2 minutes invested in making ADW.Launcher faster and smoother than LauncherPro. If you use these settings and still find ADW.Launcher to be slow and chunky on a Nexus One, then there is something going on with your phone. I suggest doing a Wipe Cache and Wipe Dalvik Cache, or freeing up some memory.

i have this problem frequently thats why i make mods and roms. i can get it but not everyone can, and even i sometimes have to wipe, and/or a bunch of other crap. its basically at your own risk but you can look and the pics HERE; it does work, and im using it currently as is anyone else using my cyan mod. i havent had time because i been busy but my intentions were to add update zip form but havent got back to it yet. when i make a rom or mod i install everything before i sign it and thats why it all works in them. it does work, its just very picky. i have many pics. it works just fine other wise i wouldnt even know what it looked like after i themed it

If you're going to post tons of files it might be useful to have a little bit of a description of what each one does next to it e.g.:
SPRINT VVM UPDATE.ZIP - this is the OEM Sprint Visual Voicemail App
Very helpful thread, Thank you.
One question I have is how to change the home screen. I prefer LauncherPro to ADW but when I try to switch Home screens with "Home Switcher" LauncherPro does not stick as the default home screen. Any help would be appreciated.
Sorry if this is the wrong thread.
I have been searching for a way to access or change my PRL using CM6?
I have installed EPST.apk from another rom, and I don't know if there are more files I must include, or if it's simply not supported yet.
So far, the only way I have been able to change my PRL is flashing an eclair rom and then flashing cyanogen nightly.
Thanks

i switched my prl before i went to cyan and since ive been here i flashed the radio suggested in the first dev thread and everything works for me great. personally i have never noticed a difference in prl other than one time my market apps wouldnt update right and after i accepted the new prl it worked. that was way back on hero though. I dont really trust the ota stuff, but you are cyanogen now dont even have to worry anymore with the htc or sprint bs.
also check out your cyangenmod settings in settings. manymany options. if you have any questions just let me know or post...
Upon further reading of this post and some of the links, (please excuse my stupidity) I take it these files are meant for cyanogenmod roms. If you install or flash them on other roms, it might break something.
I was curious about the two voice mail files. Both are different file sizes than the one that is in my rom, so obviously they aren't the same thing. I was tempted to try them out, but my common sense told me that these are probably meant for cyan's rom. I take it that it would be a better idea to wait until the rom is released to the masses before playing with stuff like this.
Am I understanding you correctly with these assumptions or not? With me still being kinda newbish, maybe these questions could help other people that are newbs too.

Thanks for this.
Also, I'm in the camp that typically finds your mods a bit too loud for my taste, but as a few people said in the thread, I really dig power up. Nicely done. Not that your other stuff is bad at all, just different strokes for different folks.
I'll probably try this one out if I'm not crazy busy sometime soon.
I started an FAQ/known bugs thread, but they moved it to Q&A, which has rendered it almost useless. I'll link to this, but if the mods let this one stay maybe we should merge my content into here.

It really seems like since CM is getting so much attention there should be a sticky that gets regular updates with known issues and features so people don't post the same stuff over and over quite as much. The OP on the main CM thread isn't keeping it very updated, but he did state that it should be a temp thread, he didn't offer to keep it updated.
As far as my app drawer to get it running smoother I downloaded the free adw one theme, switched theme to adw one theme then back to default theme worked perfect... Also get the transparent app drawer instead of black background with default which is pretty cool

hey good thinking. i dont wanna break my evo either. give me some details and ill give you some answers. the vm apks are different because one is in update.zip form(flashed thru recovery like a rom) and the other is the apk alone. as far as the apps being for cyan only; most of them can be used on any rom. this is just a cyan geared assistance thread. but let me know the ones you want to be sure and ill let you know from my own experience, since ive used most every version of every rom weve had so far what works and what wont. most should work fine. if you are new, i do not recommend messing with cyankeyboard until i put it in a zip.
is there any way to get only the kernel of this rom becouse im unable to flash the rom i got error flashing it
-and yes i try to use a newer recovery but when i apply update.zip it goes back to the old clockworkmode
or can someone give me a link of a newer update.zip or any idea
OK, I've searched for days to try and find a fast, stable, sense-ui (Theme-wise) ROM that works on the HTC Hero. I've found tons of ROMS for the G1, I've tried the CyangenMod 6 ROM, I've spent hours searching for a good ROM. CM6 is a bit faster, but occasionally it will hang. (A bit better than stock 2.1) I don't like that a lot of apps don't work (After downloading an app and installing it, you can't click open or find it in your apps list) and I don't like that the fact that you can't group your contacts or have the Sprint/HTC widgets work. (The only widgets I use are the clock and the email, messages, and voice mail widgets that show how many you received.
Please let me know if you use one like that you can recommend.

For a good sense UI rom I would go with Zen rom. You can find it here.
I've been using this rom NFX-Hero 2.2.1 by nfinitefx45. After playing with other roms and the cyanogen ones, i've come back to this one. I've been running this for a couple weeks and it's pretty smooth and stable. So give it a try. Also, nfinitefx45 is one dedicated developer, he actually visits the thread often and help with answering questions, solving problems/bugs!

+1 nfinite's roms are put together well and are fast yet also solid.
I'm using the cyanogen rom. CM6. It's actually running android 2.2 (froyo) instead of 2.1, and I think it has a better keyboard and runs very well. I use the "digital clock widget", and the weather and "news and weather" widget, I think both are available in the Market, but News and weather came with the rom. I miss the bookmarks and calendar widgets from Sense, but its not worth going back. As far as voicmail goes I'm using google voice to handle my it, and there are widgets for it too.

I use CM6 as well, and prefer it over any sense rom but the OP wanted sense so I thought I'd humor myself
The CM6 with CyanogenSense theme looks and feels like my stock Hero, but runs way faster and has a better battery life. Zen makes a great rom, bit imo the CM6 is the way to go.

I've decided to try making a theme using the tutorial thread number 667951. (I can't post links yet I don't think, so again I'll just use this work around.) That being said, I've decided to stick with NFX-HERO for my ROM since the only thing wrong with it is the boot loop issue which I'm going to try starting from scratch to fix it today. So, the tutorial says that a good starting point for a theme would be to get an existing compatible theme and modify that one. (Great idea in my opinion. I've done this in the past with other phones I had.) Does anyone have an idea of a theme that would be useful for me to start off with? I want to change a lot of things on the phone, so the more intricate the theme is, probably the better.
Also, on a side note, if I remember correctly this thread had 3 pages before the site went down. I'm not sure why it was truncated. If any mods know why, please let me know.

We lost about 2 days posts when the site crashed
i used a theme called blue echo to learn where most things go. and in his rom there is a great vending apk that has the market themed as well. then i took a dialer from one of godzen's and moved it all to compare to my stock 2.1 files and made it work with a rom i am currently running. im just now getting into looking at the apps like clock etc but that was a good start for me since there is alot covered there.
OK, let me ask you this. It'll clear up some things I need to know on compatibility. What makes a theme compatible with one ROM and not another? Likewise, what makes an app compatible with one ROM and not another? Is it the structure? If so, how? I'm a computer programmer, but even though android phones are quite similar to a Linux system on a PC, I'm still not sure if I understand the compatibility issues behind themes.
Also, just so I don't have to post again to ask this in case it's relevant, are Blue Echo and GodZen's dialer compatible with NFX? I downloaded them, but it never said anything about NFX. Is NFX similar to Sprint's 2.1 in the sense that it will run any themes I make for NFX?
well the Rom im using is mostly stock so the framework and htc.resource files are the same. for say CM6 (and i havent looked into it just a example) may have say the status bar grey and i want black. in the stock i would change the statusbar_bkg file in the framework.apk folder but in CM6 it may be in the same plae with a different name or the same name in a different place or just non existent all together. as for if they are compatible the only way to know is to try. the only way to know for sure is to open them compare and replace what you need in the correct order. also i use metamorph to apply themes. you can find it in the market. but the Vending.apk theme must be pushed with adb for some reason or it will crash the market.
matter of fact now that i think of it, the Rom im using is about to incorporate NFX. go here and you an see my post where i put what i transfereed over and they should work as i think NFX is mostly a stock (so to speak) Rom.

You are using a Hero, right? Not a G1? That would explain the boot loop issue you had with NFX.
NFX-HERO was listed in the Hero ROMs section. You sure it's only for G1? Would another phone's ROM actually even flash to a different phone properly? I mean it works, but with boot loops.
Yes they will but may it may not work. And I'm sure that Rom is for a hero and I would flash over and look for myself but I have been threw like 5 Rom's today and just got it back normal lol.
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
OK, so today I had a chance to wipe and flash the NFX-HERO ROM again. Now the phone seems a bit more stable. I can boot it and it boots all the way up fine and I can click "Shutdown Phone" and have it shutdown without freezing and rebooting, but now right now I've spotted only one flaw. When I use the phone in disk drive mode, but then pull the USB out of the phone without switching it back to charge only, and it freezes and reboots on me. (This happened last time.) I've also noticed that the phone gets increasingly more unstable as time goes on, so I wouldn't doubt that it would do this even more later on.
Correction, no matter what I do, to remove the USB when I use it as a disk drive, the phone freezes and reboots.
Update again: I decided to use RegawMod instead. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=661991) It's super fast, no bugs from what I can see, highly compatible, and it looks slick! I even used a mod to turn my dialer pink. lol I can see this being my ROM of choice for a long time. The only thing I didn't like was that it was lacking the Google Navigation tools, so I installed GoogleApps.apk (If you're looking for this file, just Google GoogleApps.apk) from another ROM and rebooted me phone (So it would show up) and then it worked just fine. I'm not sure why it isn't showing local listings for destinations first, but that may be just because it didn't catch the GPS location right off the bat. I did set my location settings to being shared.
There is a pink theme in 2.1 catalog if i remember right. If you like pink that might be a good start for you to move the files around to see how they are built.

Haha... I see how that can be misinterpreted.
Yeah, NFX is a Hero ROM, I was asking if you were trying to flash it on a G1, because if you were, it wouldn't work.
I like Regawmod 2.1. Fast with a nice dark theme. Based off of damage control. Just my two cents.

Hi all,
New to Android here. Just got a AT&T Galaxy S II Skyrocket after 4 frustrating years with iPhones.
So far I really like Android, especially that it lets you change what you don't like. I do feel that both devices are unacceptably tethered to their respective corporate landlords - and google is not necessarily better than apple in that respect - but Android lets you change that more readily. For instance myphoneexplorer lets you sync with outlook pretty flawlessly if you don't care to upload your info to google's "cloud", etc.
OK, I'm done ranting now but I do have 2 specific questions:
1. My particular SIISR does not display a visual reminder nor sounds a loud enough alarm when (a) I get a text, or (b) a calendar event comes due. It just makes a ridiculously soft noise that I miss every time I'm not standing in an empty recording studio, and even worse when I pull the phone the screen is dark so I have no idea what the feeble alarm was about. I expect the same level of alert as when I get a call, i.e. the lock screen lights up and I can read / snooze / dismiss as the case may be. This is really pretty amazing that such dirt-basic functionality is not included in the software, at the very least easily enabled in Settings. Am I really expected to turn on the phone and pull down the Notifications curtain to find out what is going on? If there is no workaround this will be a showstopper for me and I'll have no choice but to return the phone.
2. I like the idea of upgrading to a rom like cyanogen when it becomes available for the SIISR, but I am concerned about how at&t cottons up to having rooted and OS-reflashed devices on its network and what they might do about it, and more specifically what happens when updates are pushed down the pipe. What is you guys' real world experience with that?
Thank you for your feedback! I'd really like to stick with my new Android phone!
you go into setting and the sound option. click on volume and make sure it maxed out, then click notification ringtone and you can change the sound.
As for visual reminder its at the top left of the screen. Text shows an envelope and calender alert a different icon.. I use handcent for sms and it works way better than stock program.
Not sure if BLN works on the this model but try it. it will leave your softkeys lit when you have a text.
you can try different lock screens via golocker so that you dont have to unlock your phone to see what the alert was but to actually read the alert or know more than if it was a message or email or phone call you have to unlock it for security reasons as perhaps you get confidential material that not just ANYONE should see.
as for rooted and custom firmware its safe, and prevents stock updates from your provider. as android is opensource you are allowed to customize it.
As to #1, you can change the notification sound both in your email settings and in the phones settings/sounds area. As to it being a dark screen when you go to check it.. thats one of the downsides to this particular model, no notification LED.. there is an app on the android market called NoLED that will put a little picture on the black screen to make up for it. BUT I cannot vouch for whether or not it drains battery (my chief concern), just have to try it out.
#2 I've been on AT&T with a rooted/flashed phone of various models since 2008 and I've never had them notice/say anything. It does void your warranty flashing, but there are ways of getting it back to stock if you do end up needing that. At the moment on this phone I believe you can't get it *perfectly* back to stock, but just have to give the devs here time and it will be available eventually.
*NoLED is on my list of apps to check battery usage, I'll get on it and post again tomorrow
while the forums are a great resource for things, you will get answers faster if you just google (or youtube) things like 'how to change android sms sound'

BLN requires a kernel that supports BLN, its only a matter of time when one of these great devs on here creates one.
Handcent SMS (free in the market) has the option to have your message pop up and remain on your screen until you cancel it. Almost like the iPhone.
As what Jacob said, when you are running a rooted device, you are most likely running a custom Recovery like CWM. Its actually the custom recovery that prevents you from getting the updates Over The Air. HOWEVER, the way the devs work... those new updates will generally be available for you way before your carrier sends it to your device. So rooted or not, you're gonna wanna root it anyway cause you'll end up being one of the few who wont have ICS, or whatever.

Like it was said, you won't get updates from AT&T, but why would you want AT&T updates to overwrite your Cyanogen ROM?? When you flash Cyanogen (or any ROM), you follow that ROM and reflash when updates are available. So instead of relying on AT&T for updates, you'll rely on the developer of the ROM for updates. Also, as long as you're not trying to exchange the phone or anything like that, AT&T has no right to tell you how to use your phone. Root it, flash it...throw it against the wall...it's yours. Do what you want. Now, when you try to warranty your wall smashed phone, you better hope you have a stock AT&T ROM on there if it powers up. Every time I've warrantied a phone, it's been dead, so it didn't matter. If it won't turn on, they can't tell what ROM you have, and really, most of those "techs" just want to give you a new phone and get you on your way. Personally, I've never had a problem getting a new phone.
#1 go into sms press settings in there change your SMS ringtone. If you want an iPhone SMS type of visual reminder (bubble alert) download SMS popup from the market tinker the settings to your liking.
I'll suggest every new iPhone to android user to read the phones manual or Google your questions before jumping to conclusion that android doesn't have this and that. Most likely it does. You can customize android how ever You want.

Has anyone had experience with the Chinese GO Launcher and the widgets that come with it? They look pretty cool, and it seems they have the functionality I'm missing.
btw I can understand the "read the manual first" comments; I did read the manual and, not unpredictably, it said nothing about functionality that doesn't exit.
Thanks for all the input so far everyone!
I recently upgraded from the iphone to the Skyrocket, and am loving it. I wasn't sure whether I was going to like it the first few days, but now when I pick up my husband's iphone it seems like a toy compared to the Skyrocket.
I just started using Go Launcher Ex two days ago. It has a lot of slick and useful features. I haven't finished exploring all of the options available, but so far I'm enjoying the themes, locker options, and SMS pro. It's easy to try Go, and you always can uninstall it if you don't like it. I did have to redo my widgets after installing it, but that was actually kind of fun with the new theme I installed.
Not a huge deal but something to keep in mind with GO launcher.. recently noticed with system panel that GO launcher drains battery excessively when the phone is idle (device on but screen off), so i switched to launcher pro which drains FAR less with the screen off. The app is nearly the same as far as functionality, with one or two exceptions that can be added by purchasing the the pro version if you really need them (resizing widgets). I decided it was worth it to use less battery.
*note, im a battery stickler.. I can't stand any extra drain
more then happy to help you out.

I know switching from the Iphone to Android is a big change. I was so confused for about a week. Anyways, if you want I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about your phone. I use the Go Launcher and Go SMS , I know a lot about them. Anyway just PM me if you'd like.
it has been my experience, because all returned/exchanged phones are sent out for reconditioning, att nor does the manufacturer care what OS modification has been performed on the phone. I returned my cappy at the atrix launch and asked specifically about the issue of "stock" or not, then I handed my serendipity cappy right over. Never heard back from att since and I'm still upgrading phones today without any heat. no worries.

Good to know, thanks for the info. I'm really happy with Go launcher, and in fact have noticed much better battery performance than I had previously with a live wallpaper. But I'll look into launcher pro if the battery performance is a problem in the future.
i can confirm that Go Launcher DRAINS battery very much.....but i still use it i like to functions.
just letting you know
I installed GO Launcher EX, it looks very cool; polished and very usable UI is a massive improvement. I recommend it. Ditto GO Dialer / contacts, a huge improvement over stock. GO calendar widget is OK but not fabulous; it looks good though with the Transparency theme. GO locker was pretty but rather useless, I uninstalled it.
Installed SMS popup, works excellent. I'm happy with it. Who knew I'd get excited over functionality that used to be standard 6 years ago.
Then for my calendar I looked for an iPhone type of visual reminder (bubble alert) that wakes up the phone and displays even when the screen is locked. I only found two:
- Calendar Snooze, of which I am currently running the free version. It does the job, but it's sort of aesthetically challenged.
- The pathetic Nudnik, which I uninstalled immediately. It looks like it was designed by a pre-schooler.
Now I need to resolve my lock screen issue, then I'll be content (it locks up immediately whenever I press Power although I set the delay to 10 mins in Settings).
I think I'll give Cyanogen a whirl if it becomes available for Skyrocket.
Try iPhone Notification.
Went from a G2 to this One S yesterday. I'm not too impressed.
No dedicated menu button
There is enough room for one on the bottom but they only put 3.
What happens now is that Android (or Sense or something) detects when there are menu options and puts a button on the screen for it taking away real estate from the application.
No trackball
I used this a lot on my G2 especially on web pages with small links that I didn't want to missclick. I already miss it. I also used the trackball wake feature in CM on my G2. Now there is only one way to turn the screen on and its a little hard to do one handed. The trackball was in a very natural position to turn on with your thumb. Now without it, it is very awkward to power on with your thumb, you have to hold it very high and I'm affraid of dropping it. Alternatively I could turn it on with my index finger but it spreads my hand way out and still feels weird.
No folders
I'm not sure if this is an ICS thing or a Sense thing (because this phone is an unholy bastardization), but I can't figure out a way to create folders on my home screens. I'm not talking about the Sense folders for applications either. In normal Android builds you can add shortcuts, widgets, folders. The Pandora application shipped with a folder called "My Stations" or something like that. I used this because it only took up 1x1 on a homescreen and let me choose which station was opened. Without it, you need to open the application and it immediately starts playing the last radio station. This is annoying.
Resolution
The DPI isn't any better than my G2, its just a bigger screen. This is pretty disappointing. I would like a crisper display in a flagship device.
Bloat
Its pretty bad. I know most users want Facebook, Twitter, Dropbox, etc... but how about you let us select what we want during the phone setup.
Misc
This is my first Sense device and my first ICS device so again, not sure where this crap is coming from.... When you install an application it creates a shortcut for it on one of your home screens. Putting a shortcut is the simplist thing you can do in Android, why not leave it for the use to do if they want to do it.
On my way to work I was listening to I Heart Radio and while the live streams were okay when I went to the "pandora"-like functionality it would only play one song and then stop. This never happened on my G2. Don't know whats going on here.
I don't care for the browser (which they stupidly call "internet").
I don't care for all of the account options. I went to share a page in the browser, I wanted to email it to myself. So when I went to share page it let me select how to share it. I got "Facebook for HTC Sense", "Mail", "Twitter for HTC Sense", and "Dropbox". I did set up Facebook, but I did not set up mail, twitter, or dropbox. What I wanted was GMail which I had to select "See all..." Then I saw a plethora of garbage bloat that they bundle with the phone and had to scroll down to get to GMail. After I went though this experience I went to share another page to see if GMail showed up at the top... it didn't.
I'm sure I'll have more complaints the more I use it. I used my fiance's upgrade for this one but I get an upgrade in 3 months. If CM9 isn't out by then she'll be using this phone and I'll upgrade to a SGSIII or that yet to be named quad-core LG phone.
Summary
CM9 can't come fast enough.
EDIT
I'll add some good things here.
Good things
Again, this is coming from a G2 so in 2 years things should be better anyways....
It is very thin, and very light.
It has a front facing camera which my G2 did not.
The flashlight, though not as bright as the "High Brightness" Cyanogenmod setting on the G2, is still pretty bright.
The speaker seems to put out a lot of sound. Can't attest to the quality yet but the volume is there.
EDIT #2
Some more good and bad....
Skype Useless
... probably related to Wifi crackling. One of the things I was looking forward to with this phone was the ability to make video calls via Skype. My fiance has an iPad2, my in-laws each have a G2X, and my brother has a SGSII. Skype is useless on this device. There is echoing / cracking and video lag even when on Wifi. I called my brother with this One S and it was useless. I then called him on an iPad2 and it was great. I'm wondering if the problem has to do with Beats Audio. We'll have to wait for an AOSP ROM without Beats to find out.
So I unlocked/rooted/ROM'd ...
I am now running Black Dragon 4.0. I LOVE the menu hack to get rid of the stupid 3 dot menu on all the screens. I like that they kept the ability to longpress home to get the default behavior as well. The launcher seems nice though I haven't played with it too much (which is a good thing, means they have good defaults).
Can't wait for the kernel sources to be released so we can make some more CM9 progress. I really miss the buttons in the dropdown for wifi, brightness, bluetooth, etc. Now I have to dropdown, click settings, scroll down and find brighness.
How's the battery life? My G2 has some HORRENDOUS battery... like it can drain 20% an hour... I go to school for like 6/7 hours and I can leave with like a <20% battery life. Currently using MIUI because that seems to be the best battery life.
Edit: As for a menu button, Google is trying to get rid of that. I read a post about it a couple of months ago. They say it was useless. I completely disagree because I use it quite a lot. I use it way more than the search button which I have literally probably used less than 30 times and I've been on an Android device since the G1 came out.
For everything you just said mostly there are workarounds.
The deidcated menu button now exists through roms...the three button thing on screen is removed. Change of dpi works fine on no sense roms I'm set on 195 on sense not as good. Play market you can stop adding apps onto screens
Bloat just remove yourself root explorer..
Sent from my HTC One S using XDA Premium App
Battery lifes good also...
As I said workarounds exist
Also get a different launcher and ditch sense or just get Nova or apex

I'm the wrong person to ask about battery life (at least during the week). I work in one of these new fancy energy efficient "Green" buildings. We have coating on our windows that block UV with the side effect of also blocking cellular signals. Everyone that works here puts their phones on airplane mode to save battery because we have 0 signal and the phone search all day.
I'll know better this weekend about battery life.

How did they implement the dedicated menu button?
How do I ditch Sense?... what is Nova / apex?
Do I need root to install another launcher?

no you can install launchers without root..from market just look for them
to ditch sense though you will need root..and to change dpi you will need root..my advice root lol
by ditching sense i mean install a non sense rom like black dragon or untouchables that strip sense away so the majority is ice cream sandwich without the bloatfest. some apps will be kept in but just use root explorer to rid the rom of it.
the dedicated menu button and ridding the screen of the three dots at the bottom is also because its been taken away and remapped by devs..so again..you need root
most of all..development will kick in soon..so better to root..or if not just use a different launcher but you dont really accomplish what your setting out to do
leedroid should be here soon with a rom,and will do away with most of the bloat anyway...so youll keep sense and most things you complained about will be sorted..
the main thing here is..root..worth it..yes..without..pointless and youll be stuck with htcs crap stock rom..pretty poor for me..but coming from another phone with loads of development..probably biased of how it should be
No Folders?
Just long-tap on the icon and drag it to another icon. THe folder will creat automaticly.

No dedicated menu button
Root and ROM it. People are remapping the multitask key as the menu button, and hold-home now does the multitask. You're on XDA, so I assume you're enthused enough to root and ROM it.
No trackball
Seriously. Please find me an Android device with a trackball nowadays. It's gone...you're just gonna have to deal with it.
Resolution
This display seems pretty crisp. We're working with phones with relatively small displays. There's only so many pixels you can pack into until it doesn't even matter. 720p is about as far as we need to go on phone screens. The qHD screen on this phone has vivid colors and all the qualities of Super AMOLED. The resolution seems plenty high to me. Are you starting 1inch away from the phone and observing pixels?
Bloat
Welcome to flagship carrier devices. Again, you're on XDA, and fully capable of rooting it and removing all that crap. The G2 was a 1-off device that had pretty much stock Android. Consider it a Nexus device, more or less. With a flagship phone, you're going to get bloatware.
Misc
This is my first Sense device and my first ICS device so again, not sure where this crap is coming from.... When you install an application it creates a shortcut for it on one of your home screens. Putting a shortcut is the simplist thing you can do in Android, why not leave it for the use to do if they want to do it.
Sense has nothing to do with this. The new Google Play Store now by default places new apps' icons on the homescreen. It's as easy as going to the prefs in Play Store and disabling. Blame Google if you're going to blame someone.
On my way to work I was listening to I Heart Radio and while the live streams were okay when I went to the "pandora"-like functionality it would only play one song and then stop. This never happened on my G2. Don't know whats going on here.
Don't know what to tell you, but it's obvious that you're describing some sort of software issue, not a hardware issue. If it worked fine on the live streams, then your data connection worked. Talk to iHeartRadio.
I don't care for the browser (which they stupidly call "internet").
So install a new one! ICS Browser+ is exactly like the stock browser. There's also Chrome and Opera. Cmon...
This is the one thing I disliked and will agree with you on, although once again, rooting and ROMing can take care of it. That or removing bloatware.

Suit yourself. 4.7 inches is just too big, and at these speeds, you're at the mercy of your data connection, not the processor.

I think nearly all of your points are moot. A lot of your review seems to be based on your lack of willingness to change some preferences and MANAGE your device. If you were on a G2, then you never had to manage stuff like this. Consider it a new experience. If you wanted stock Android, you should've gotten a Galaxy Nexus. I just upgraded from a Nexus S and while I screamed at first at all the Sense crap, I quickly had it rooted, debloated, de-Sensed, and up and running with a nice, fast ROM (Black Magic 4.0).
Give it time. The phone JUST came out.

Those aren't the folders I'm talking about. I think what I'm talking about are called live folders. In AOSP builds of Android when you long press on an empty space on one of your screens you can choose widgets, folders, shortcuts, contacts, and other things I can't remember.
With Sense you only get widgets and shortcuts.... no folders, no contacts, etc... just widgets and shortcuts.
Isn't that minor thing?

Going to have to side with you on this one. This phone is definitly a great device, give it some time, dig in a little bit. Much better than my Tmo-SGS2.
most of things you mentioned isnt a "bad thing" just you dont know how to operate the phone, or its just different (opinion at that point).
Also you didnt like things which are for all devices, not just one S

Sorry... you said Black Magic, not Black dragon.
I'll give it a try in a couple weeks. I like to use my phone a bit before rooting to make sure I didn't get a lemon.
Does the camera work on this one?
Just got the phone and here are my negatives:
1. With lowest brightness setting the screen is horrible (but if you increase it a bit, its ok)
2. No switches in pulldown menu ? I though Sense always had that.....
3. Bottom plastic is not 100% flush at one corner (maybe will exchange, maybe not)
4. In navigation I just couldnt find "setting" button anywhere.....whats up with that ?
gonna go to Verizon and compare to Nexus....I still need Tmo SIM and stores are in same place anyway....I am not a phone freak not wasting time here
Its also very true that until you have 2 devices in hand you cant really compare screen quality...I though my G2x IPS panel for super great, but compared to One S its very warm colored and whites have red tint. Its also hard to use in lowest brightness even in dark room....but with G2x case its because screen is simply too dark, with One S its bright but disgusting to look at due to some "noise"
Just upgraded to tweeked 3 and have some problems:
1. I can't find the voicemail app & don't know how to call VM. where do I get the app?
2. Buddies now is missing. Won't restore via titanium backup.
3. I migrated from eclipse rom. How do I get the eclipse rom keyboard and colors?
4. Howdo Irestore the default power on and power off animations?
5. Verizon Data APP / My veerizon forces close on startup.
I think that is it for now. Will post when I have some time to play with it.

1. You don't need the app for voicemail. Just dial *86 or hold down 1 in the dialer.
2. Buddies now is considered bloat and you can only use it on the stock launcher anyway. If you want it it is in tweaktools.
3. I believe eclipse keyboard was either a themed ICS or themed Swype (I don't remember which - it was too long ago). Either way both are available if you search. As for the colors - since Nitro stopped working on the charge we don't have that, but there are a lot of themes on tweaktools.
4. Tweaktools
5. It works fine for me. Could be a bad flash, could be something else.
And I guess we have another nocturnal person here.
The vvm stuff was also deemed bloat, but all of that stuff can be restored using tweaktools OR the system apps and system app flasher in the tweaked op. Jihad has you covered on the rest (thanks Jihad).
I got the verizon app to work after deleting and reinstalling. The rest I can live with till I have a chance to research Tweaktools. Most of the stuff is minor and just me being picky as I'm not yet used to the tweeked ROM.
Tweakedtools: doesn't seem to be working. I can get into the menu and install a theme and buddies now, but they don't act as though they ever got installed. even rebooted. What the heck?

You don't have CWM installed? I doubt it works with stock recovery. When you installed Tweaked did you use the Odin version without CWM? You should get and install CWM.
The only 2 boot animations that work are Stock Galaxy S boot and Stock DROID boot. They use the Samsung format that works with the stock kernel. Themes should work though.
Ok. Now I understand. I did use oden version without cwm. Now I need to oden cwm and I'll be good to go.
EDIT:
Thanks for the info, everything works.
Now I need to find a suitable keyboard---possibly one that mirrors the one in the eclipse rom.
On another note, I'm not all that happy with any of the included themes. How to I create the theme I want?
If you know Java and smali, you can rip apart the framework and make your own theme.

I have no idea on how to work with Java or what smali is.
I do have the old eclipse ROM. can't i take the theme files from there and somehow load them to the phone?
Regarding the keyoard, I couldn't get that swipe one to install as the app keeps asking me to login and I don't know how to generate a username and password. I'm now thinking that it was a Samsung keyboard, but I could be wrong.
Smali is basically the decompiled Android version of Java. In Android, everything gets packed up in .dex files for the Dalvik VM (Android's optimized version of the Java VM), and when you decompile them, you get Smali. It's like Java, but "distorted", for lack of a better word. If you know how to read Java, you can feel your way around, but it's different enough that even if you're good with Java, you'll have to relearn some things for Smali.
well...I did some searching on line and I think the stock theme that comes preloaded at the factory is what I want to get back to. Also the default Samsung keyboard is the one I want.
I'm leaning towards tossing tweaked out the window rather than getting frustrated. If I do that what do I loose and how would I add root to stock?
also, I can't manage to get the phone to vibrate when i tap the screen. Haptic feedback. How do I turn it on?

No. What you think of as "files" are a series of edits in the framework. Obviously the framework for Tweaked is for Tweaked, and Eclipse is for Eclipse. If you're going to try to interchange these things you may as well just reinstall Eclipse.
For Swype, I'm not sure what you're talking about. There's a big honking button that says "register" on the website.

Not sure what you're looking at. The theme in Eclipse is NOTHING like the dickbutt gold (or pumpkin and poo) in stock. And the stock Samsung keyboard is God awful. Why not try something like SwiftKey 3? Swype is pretty good too, and it's free.
To root after restocking, all you would need to do is flash the SuperUser or SuperSU (whichever is your preference) zip in CWM. When you move from Tweaked (the only current custom ROM on the charge, by the way) you lose essentially everything. Dwitherell has put in numerous tweaks to improve the UI speed, and he has put in TSM parts... Plus you'll be back to the bloated whale this phone is at stock.
I believe most of the haptic feedback was removed in Tweaked because most view it as an annoying useless feature. I could be completely wrong but I don't really feel anything even though my haptic feedback is on.

I did nothing that would add or eliminate haptic feedback (outside of the entry in tsmparts, but I did nothing to hook that in if it needed hooking). Also, the stock samsung keyboard is called AxT9IME.apk. Sorry Tweaked is not to your liking. Have you tried the tw4 theme? That seems closer to the stock look at least. I didn't think anyone used it, but I can do a little work and get a stock theme variant together if you want. Also, rumor is some theme options will be added/returning soon...
And for what its worth flashing something different is a far better alternative then anything to do with a window.
Thanks for all the useful info. I must start by saying that i do like tweaked. It is much faster than what i had with eclipse. That said im not sure how much is due.to the rom and what is due.to the upgrade ota. I believe its mostly the rom. Way to go!
As for colors im not opposed to whats available im just used to what i had. The big complaint is that the calendar widgit does not have black text on a white background. Its not as legible but not horible. I can live with it. Im surprised there is no way to change colors like there is in windows control panel. Or an app for that. Oh well.
Thanks for.the keyboard.info. I'll take a look for it at lunch. As for missing the register button...it was to early to be doing anything tech.
Im sure that over time ill get more used to tweaked and be glad ro be uding it.
One last request...stock shutdown animation
Thats enough for now.

To be fair most of the speed change is due to the OTA - most of the edits made were the same as they were in the FP1 version, so I can't really take credit for that sort of thing. I don't have nor do I pretend to have the sort of skill necessary to do such things
As far as the stock shutdown animation, if there's some interest I could try to get that together. It required a number of framework.jar edits to switch the shutdown animation focus from reading a .qmg file to displaying a sequence of .pngs, so I would have to undo that sort of thing to make the shutdown.qmg work again. It wouldn't be too hard, so if there's some interest in that I can put something together and throw it on tweaktools.
I have interest but am not sure who else does and if its worth the time.
I googled the keyboard apk and downloaded it but it will not install. Is there a certain version that i need?

FWIW, I really lock the Tweaked Shutdown animation. Just need to find a sound byte to go with that (for those occasions when my phone shuts down without me knowing) - thinking of getting something from Southpark's tweak.
as for keyboards, have you tried ICS Keyboard? best in my experience.
Ice is not my thing. I just like the Samsung keyboard best. Just can't find a copy that installs.
Also what about stock screenshot setting?
