Do all AOSP rom's have data issues? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S III

I keep reading about data drops, 3g/4g issues on most of the Aosp roms like CM10, AOKP etc. Since we don't have the right RIL for our phones yet, is this a common problem?

You are going to continue to see data issues with jb based roms until either a) vzw releases tw jb stock rom or b) the current RIL gets improved. But yes, its an aosp jb issue.

data working fine on paranoid android build 9/6.

Try going in low coverage areas, it will drop. At work, whenever I am using an AOSP rom coverage keeps on dropping but when I am on ICS, it never drops.

Actually I have the same issue on the stock phone. It drops data in low signal areas.

no it dont...it does work fine in good coverage areas, but when you get into low signal areas the data handoff 1x/3g/LTE is terrible.

nothing like aosp does...when im in town i run paranoid android, but when im heading out of town i revert to my beans nandroid. i do love pa tho, its a solid rom.

I can deal with it on AOSP cause if far better then my galaxy nexus was with data drops lol

I am on liquid and I have much better reception. I work on the 18th floor and I used to drop all the time on touchwiz. Now my data is very stable. However I'm sure it varies depending on the phone. I had data issues on touchwiz, and this is noticeably better.

Supposedly there has been a fix in the last day or so. Some of the AOKP builds have them merged in from yesterday and today. I believe the CM was the ones who fixed it but not sure if they merged it in their Rom yet.

More info on this? Is it in liquid rc3?
The issue is strictly with handoffs and 3g reception, 4g should be just as strong as stock.
Also what are the chances of ever getting up to stock quality with the ril if we hypothetically never got the jb update. Just curious as to if we're going to be in this situation again next time a new version of android is released.

Liquids Rom was released before the fix. Lookhere for info and you can download the build in that thread. Other AOKP threads there are starting to add it in as well our have a flashable zip for it.

Aosp Data Problem
I have a similar problem with aosp roms.I flashed pa 2.18, and 2.17 yesterday and after initial install 4g was strong, and then i tried to switch to phablet mode and upon reboot i have no data at all. Same thing happened with aokp build 4. My imei is still there and my phone number as well, but no data what so ever. Just wondering am i doing something wrong?

I've been on CM10 Nightlies for the last month. Running CM10 M2 now.
4g reception is strong (no drops that I've noticed). In earlier Nightlies 3g used to drop every couple minutes, but with the newer ones it now stays up. However, 3g reception is still weaker than stock.
Fortunately it doesn't affect me too much. 99 percent of the time I'm in either a strong 3g or strong 4g area.

Status of AOSP?

Did the JB leaks help AOSP roms w.r.t data speeds, stability, camera etc? I don't see much going on, is everyone waiting for 4.2 to drop?
I think so.... Tomorrow is the suspected drop of the nexus 4 so yea I guess so.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
The big issue is the kernel. And the source for the JB kernel isn't out publicly. So no one has it to mod or tweak like the AOSP guys need. Once the OTA drops and the kernel is released AOSP will be rolling all over again with much more steam.

There are quite a bit more data drops on AOSP as opposed to stock TW. Also AOSP doesn't pick up signal as well as the new JB TW leak in outlying areas. For instance I get 1 bar of 3g and 1 of 4g in my house on AOSP and on the JB leak I get between 3 bars to full service on 3g and between 2 and 4 bars on 4g in the same place which is a great improvement over TW ICS, I was dropping service all the damn time for no reason. On my MAXX I had full service on 3g everywhere on my house and 3 to 4 bars of 4g, and while I know Samsung radios aren't as strong I shouldn't have had that much of a problem, my SGS3 wouldn't even pick up service much better outside until the leak.

That's interesting. I've never had any data drops whatsoever. What's the differential on the actual numbers? Bars aren't a good metric.

It isn't a gargantuan difference but it is notable, I'm not home and won't be for a bit, I have a notebook I've written it down in, but later today I'll flash the new leak grab the numbers and grab the numbers off of PA and post them for comparison. The thing that killed me though was that the numbers were closer to TW ICS, there was still a difference but not as large as AOSP and TW JB, but the difference in the service quality was notable. Texts didn't fail 5 to 10 times and have to be continuously re-sent, and calls weren't breaking up any more and I wasn't dropping calls in the same place I had all of these issues before.
I'll try to post em all by 5 today, hopefully.

My experience on AOSP is that for the first few battery cycles my signal will be fine. Then as I get more situated on the rom (any AOSP one) the 3G/4G hand off gets worse and signal degrades. Touchwiz definitely gets me a better signal, one that is consistent at that. The signal difference is far from negligible in my experience
Sent from my SCH-I535 using Tapatalk 2
Aosp imo has lost its edge...reason being everybody is using cm's kernel base so they all have the same bugs. I dont know if its the abundance of supported devices thats taking away from the quality of the builds. However it will shine over touchwiz when the carrier quits updating the device and the only way to get new versions of android will be thru aosp.

Alright so I just found out on android authority that cyanogen mod just released its stable builds for the galaxy s3 variants. Just scroll down and find d2vzw!

Hate to say it but TW Roms on the S3 FTW.
Nothing more stable then the TW Roms we have for the Verizon S3. AOSP is just not there yet and who knows if it will ever be. After coming from a GNEX, you really see AOSP was not meant for any other devices and is loaded with problems when using anything else then a Nexus device.
Would love to get another Nexus device but who knows if Verizon will ever see one again and no other network is really good enough to pull me away right now.
Also, Google's claim about no LTE on the Nexus 4 due to bad battery, did anyone at Google try the S3? I would hardly call 4 hours of on screen time over LTE bad battery. They need to look past the GNEX which for whatever reason was a disaster when it came to battery. My wife's Rezound with like a 1650mAh battery gets as much screen on time then my GNEX did with a 2100mAh battery. Knock knock, don't we think something was wrong there!
Actually, I used the Thunderbolt I had previous to the GS3 for over a year on AOSP and it was AT LEAST as stable as the stock rom...probably more so. It just took time for it to get there. Saying that AOSP will never be stable is just...well, hogwash...Right now it's questionable. The roms are stable, it's just data that has a bit of an issue. If you're in a great reception area, there's no reason to not use it. Fringe areas, well, there are pros and cons.

I never said it will never be there I said who knows if it will get there. The Thunderbolt was never stable on stock so saying AOSP was just as stable is not saying much. lol
Signal is important to many people. If I was not worried about signals I would not be on Verizon paying their hight prices. I would be paying half the price for service running a Nexus 4 on a crappy GSM network. There are more issues then just signal and sure eventually they may all get worked out but so many people here jump devices so often we never get to see the final product if one is produced.
All I am saying is TW Roms have been so good on the S3 I cannot imagine sacrificing the stability at this point for an AOSP rom and trust me I would love to run AOSP. I never knew how good it felt until the GNEX which was my first Nexus device. Man, did AOKP rule on that phone.
I am currently using this rom. The only problems I seem to have are GPS locks, and the speaker phone echo. Supposedly some work was done on the echo, so perhaps a wipe is need to reap the benefits. At this point, once those two problems are fixed I would consider it a daily driver for anyone.
I don't use NFC or bluetooth, so I am unaware of problems related to those features.
Bass Issue
I'm not really sure if there is an exact stable build since the supposed stable build had Bluetooth issue by not giving the bass

if you search "nfc greyed out" in the question forum youll find pages of results and threads about this, and youll get your informatino much faster.
theres a zip youll find, as well as instructions.
nandroid
flash TW JB rom.
enable NFC (might as well get a GPS lock also)
restore nandroid
win
For the NFC issue, I believe that the CM10 thread includes a flashable zip or APK to fix the NFC: see this thread.
I do have a general question. I have been running CleanROM 5.6 but wanted to know how "stable" CM10 is in comparison to CleanROM. I understand that I'd be missing out on some Touchwiz features (motions, smartstay, powersave), but I am most concerned w/ battery life and data connection, particularly as I find myself never using the Touchwiz features anyway.
I am finding that reception on my S3 is inferior to my Razr M - for example, where I would get 3G or 4G signal on my M, I was getting 1x or no data on my S3. From what I've also read, data on the CM ROMs is inferior to the data on the TW ROMS. Can anyone confirm this?
Also, w/ battery life, I've also read that battery life on CM ROMS is inferior to that of Touchwiz. In any case, I am finding that the battery life on the S3 in general is inferior to that of the Razr M given my use. Specifically, I push my work email, read and respond to emails, browse the web a little bit, a few phone calls and text messages, and some FB use. On the Razr M, I was consistently getting about 36 hours of use, whereas, on the S3, I have been barely able to get 24 hours. If battery life on TW is already inferior to that of the Razr M, I am not willing to sacrifice battery life further by going with CM10.
In addition to battery and consistent data, are there any other bugs/issues w/ the CM10 stable that I should be aware of (tethering, BT connectivity, low call volume, speakerphone echo, etc.)?
Lastly, I assume that CM10 stable does not have the multitude of bugs that the present version of CM10.1 has?

Poor Signal Strength with Cyanogen 10 & 10.1

I live and work in an area that has poor signal for Verizon. I almost immediately flashed to CM 10 after I got the Verizon Galaxy S3 because I was running CM 10 on my previous Sprint Galaxy S3 without issue. I have been updating the radio and RPM with each leak (currently running K3) and things got a little better but I constantly dropped calls. I had to flash back to stock because I flashed to CM 10.1 and my radio got messed up. I ran the newest stock rom for the last week and noticed a huge difference. I still had low signal but my data dropped less frequently and I could actually make phone calls in areas I couldn't before.
I rooted, and flashed to CM 10.1 and noticed right away the signal is not where it should be. I can't make phone calls inside of buildings with low signal at all, where with stock I could without issue. I love CyanogenMod but I don't think I can deal with the poor signal.
Any ideas on what could be causing this problem and maybe a possible resolution?

Depends on where ya live, your mileage may vary. I get within 1-2 -dBm between the two.
Technically since we don't have the source code the reason CM10 has data is by a work around.
There really is nothing you can do. It is what it is. I've run devices with CM that have provided better signal, and usually were on sprint lol and then run them where they provide the same or slightly worse quality.
Happens.

Ok I really hope I'm not beating the dead horse here but I have a similar problem on my verizon Galaxy s3 and I was hoping there might be a fix
My understanding is that the CM developers dont have the GS3 source for something (the RIL?) so they have to use a different RIL? I'm probably totally butchering that, because I dont understand the words I'm using, but from what I've gathered the signal is what it is on CM, and will not improve beyond where it is.
It is certainly usable for me, but there are many times my wife has 4g and I have 3g, or she has a 3g signal and I have nothing at all (she has a stock vzw gs3).

I think you're correct on the RIL part.
I had the same issue on 10.1. I switched to an older radio, and though it is not perfect, it did give me better reception and the switch from 3g to 4g is faster. My radio is VRLHE
Why not try a rom like beans. It is a touch wiz rom that looks like aosp and had a lot of aosp features. That way the radios will work fine you will still have aosp stuff and all the goodness of being rooted.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda premium
Let's not get confused here. Tw rom's like beans are themed to look slightly aosp, but are far from it. Aosp has so many customization options that tw cannot come close to. (I'm an aosp guy, if you can't tell). That being said, signal strength will always be an issue on aosp based roms due to the Samsung ril only being licensed to samsung, hence only working on tw rom's. The official ril code will almost never be released as its how qualcom makes its money. Currently aosp rom's use a work around home brewed ril that is very effective, but not quite what stock rom will offer. So if your signal is poor where you are, aosp may not be the best choice for you, but for most the signal is just as good as tw, and imo the only way to run android.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
I'm not confused, that's why I said looks like (aka themed like). Also I said some aosp features like MMS, camera/gallery, lock screen to name a few. Its no where near the same but if they are having issues which I read a few people do have with signal and losing data its a nice alternative and has SOME similar features.

[Q] Signal issues with AOSP roms

i really want to stay with a AOSP rom (CM 10.2 or Illusion 4.3) but when i go to a AOSP rom i get reall bad signal (1 bar or nothing) living in chicago on verizon. When i go with a TW rom using 4.1.2 the signal is great. currently i'm using Hyperdrive RLS15 and the signal is great get 4 or 5 bars. has any one else had similar issues?

I never had that drastic of signal issues. At my house I get poor reception. (2bars max). On TW I get 2bars. On AOSP I was only getting 1. I recently flashed Latest cm10.1.3 RC2 and my signal issues have greatly increased over prior builds.
Just my 2¢
Also. I know the new AOSP ROMs require the new baseband MF1. Are you updated?
I get very bag signal at my work. I just switched to an aosp rom and I can actually send texts better than before. Instead of failing 8x, it only fails 2x. I'll take it though.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
On the 4.3 based roms there still may be some legitimate signal /data issues.
On 4.2.2 aosp ROMs the issue is mostly cosmetic, you have the same signal, but the ROM show you less bars.
Check out signal in phone status before assuming you are getting worse signal.
There are still some issues with data handoffs in aosp, but it isn't as bad as it once had been.
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
Yes I'm using the latest MF1 firmware. I even reflashed the firmware and all getting bad signal with and AOSP roms. Is the something I need to do with the radio or kernel. I tried a few kernels and still same issue.

So far every new version of AOSP has had signal problems at the very beginning. Due to that fact I usually wait until the problem fixed.
I'm on Masta's unofficial CM 10.2, and my signal is all around better than my old TW ROM (Hyperdrive RLS 14/15)
If you're responding to me, make sure to quote me so I get an immediate email.
OK so I just had access to my gf's phone. I'm running PA, she's on stock tw rooted. I had both phone side by side. Both phones read the same dmb and asu. Her phone had 3 bars mine had 1. I think its safe to say that Aosp Roms just display signal different.

Just an update i went to Illusion's 4.2.2 and the signal is OK, i don't get drop call like i was getting when trying a 4.3 rom. so i'm going to stay with this until they get the 4.3 bugs ironed out. It just freaks me out to see only 1 bar for signal.
do any of you guys of which rom is the closest to making the GS3 to look like a GS4?

What's this about data drops? I haven't noticed anything except that it shows fewer bars on LTE reception but the connection seems to work just as well.

If I recall, data drops occur for 4.3 TW ROMs when the user does not have a 4.3 based modem.
I believe the data drop mostly happens when screen is off, but I could be wrong.
Im still on Omega 10.
On a side note, I might skip straight to 4.4 CM11... looks like fun.
Really looking forward to this....
Will someone be able to post the ROM when it is released? I'm on a 4.3 GE ROM, and would like to go back to a stock 4.3 ROM.
This is great, now if we could find out when Robbers will post their 4.3 modem.
I want to try Goldeneye 4.3 but don't want to deal with data drops.
what the hell are these data drops? ive been running Goldeneye for 2 weeks and not noticed anything regarding data dropping...
I keep hearing about data drop this and data drop that. I have not experienced any noticeable problem
Nobody talking about multiuser restricted profiles? This would be huge and we Canadians would be only ones to get it stock. Or a sign that this 'leaked' document might be bogus?

Modem will most likely be the same across Canadian carriers.

what kernal are u using with goldeneye.......are u on gsm or lte.......it works fine if i switch to gsm no problems but lte is the problem
I'm using lte with t-mo ktoonzes kernel.
So just a heads up, I just jumped on Euroskank cm11 @ http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/?rom=cm11&device=jflteatt to test if data drops exist for 4.2.2 modems running on 4.4.
I am running with MG1 Rogers modem at this time.
No data drops. I will update if it happens... but its been 2 hours and no issues at all.
Perhaps the issue really is with TW roms.
Side note - this ES-CM11 rom is fantastically stable. No reboots, no crashes, no major drains on stock kernel.

Try making a phone call. I tried 4.4 on multiple ROMS and Kernals on my Rogers MG1 S4, and it will sometimes drop data or even cell signal. Was unable to even send a text message. It will come back online again, but not sure why this happens.
For now i started using Wicked's T-Mobile ROM. No issues at all.
I tried a call no issues so far. Cell signal has been good so far no drops yet touch wood.

What version of Goldeneye are you running? What carrier and kernel are you on?
I tried GE 10 a few weeks back but had nothing but drops in data / cellular. I was using KT T-Mo kernel with my Bell i337M.
Thanks.
