I have ICS (official/leak 2) on my phone and rooted it. I used sqlite to set "entitlement_check" to "disabled" so the phone would let me turn on the wifi hotspot. It turns it on and lets devices connect, but they can never access the internet. What can I do, if anything, to get it working properly?
I don't use this feature, but some things to check on the devices that connect are
Do they have a valid IP address?
Do they have a default gateway set?
Do they have a DNS server set?
These are the basics you need to access internet, and hopefully it helps narrow down the issue for you.

Are you on ICS #1 or #2? What did you do other than changing entitlement_check to disabled?
Issue resolved
I tried all kinds of things and apps with no joy. The devices would connect but they had no internet access. I finally came across an app from the Play Store called "FoxFi." It works without the need for route. It took a minute or two for it to configure a route, but then I magically had internet access using my Atrix 2 ICS 4.0.4 as a wifi hotspot. I strongly suggest downloading and using this app to safe yourself the frustration I went through. I believe the entitlement_check hack would not be needed either, but I already did so I cannot verify that myself. Here is a link to the app in the Play Store.

I have my Wi-Fi Hotspot working. i disabled the entitlement check but that alone didn't do it for me.try this and there would be no need for any third party apps.actually i tried foxify but the thing is it heats up the phone too much.here's a better solution.
Using SQLite
1.open settings storage (com.motorola.android.providers.settings)
2.open settings.db
3.settings
4.search for dun_apn_changeable and dun_enable
5.Change both of their values to 1
on my phone lines theses were on line117 and 118.check for yours.
And yeah don't forget to disable entitlement check.
Lemme know if this works
And yeah just so you know foxify works with and without disabling entitlement check.

No luck for me with USB tether and Windows 7 64-bit, doesn't show up in Network and Sharing Center and USB tethering checkbox get unchecked after a while.
EDIT:Wireless hotspot works however, with the following in APN type field: default, dun
Double resolved. Change line 30 usb_entitlement_check in settings.db from '1' to 'disabled' and USB tether will work as well.

Hey... Thank you bro!
This method worked fine in my device.
In my case the lines were different, but they are easy to find. I am noob on these things and lately realize that "entitlement check" was another line to look for.

Very nice app. I go to a couple of websites to see device specs, separated by a lot of categories. All in one is always better, especially in an app. Something more I would like for this app is the ability to "favorite" devices and have them in a favorites list. Great app, nonetheless
Edit: Noticed the 1.5Beta 2 weeks later -_- Just updated and loving the favorite and compare features. Thanks again for this app

I get the same on mine. SE Xperia X10 on Gingerbread.
I think it's better to remove the SMS/call functionality from your application, because there are a lot of people(including me) not installing the application because of those permissions.
If you use this:
Code:
startActivity(new Intent(ACTION_DIAL, Uri.parse("tel:6365551212")));
With this you don't need the permission to make calls, and the dialer will be started with the phone number pre-loaded, so the user only needs to press the Call button.
And for sending SMS messages you can use this guide, which also uses intents.
Then you don't need SMS/call permissions, but the user can still call/text when he needs in your application.
This is simply astonishing. Great work. Although I have an Evo 3D and won't be moving from it at any time soon, I know a few Hero owners who could do with this App to see what they should upgrade to.

Yes, the user will be able to see the advertisers number. But I think your sent SMS is in the SMS-app of the user, so he always will be able to see the advertisers number, although I'm not sure.

Texting worked for me along with calling. Mms is picture messaging not quite the same as a normal text. It seems like data depended on getting the ha and aaa keys put on right using i believe qxdm and then putting in the password to the keys in the ##data# menu.

The HA shared secret is: "vmug33k" (text string) This is standard on all VM phones, and will actually get you 1x Speeds.
The AAA is going to be located in one of your NV Items.
Use QPST, launch the EFS Explorer, goto the NVM folder and pull these keys (copy and paste) to a folder on your desktop:
465, 465_1, 466, 466_1, 1192, 1194
Use a program called HxD Editor to read these items.
On the Intercept, the AAA is located in 466_1... Again, not sure about the other VM phones.
When viewing with HxD, look for an NV item with "vmug33k" on the right.. Under it will be your AAA Key...
It will look like something like this:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",

Now you have both keys!
Input/Write these keys onto the new phone in QPST/Service Programming/ Under the M.IP tab. Making sure to match ALL information in this tab with the donor. Also, make sure when entering the keys to switch it to "text string"
Think that should get it!
Any questions just ask!

Ok I have been searching for a while now on a resolution for this and recently found it on another forum. There is a similar post here on XDA and I think because the user posted it under his specific phone model is why it is not getting much love.
***Not meant to step on anyone's toes. Really just wanted to get this out here so that everyone could finally enjoy!!! Mods delete if this is redundant.
To get FB push notifications working here are a couple of things you can do:
Get a Blackberry device. Any one will work that has the FB app. If you don't have access to a BB you can download a simulator from BB. Go here to get your BB simulator. I went with the Storm II since I looked at one a long time ago when I contemplated my switch to a Droid. Glad I never went with BB lol. In order for the simulator to work on your PC you will need the Java Dev-kit which can be downloaded directly from Java or just click here
Install the Java first and then run the installation for BB sim. I have Win 7 and it took me less than 10 min total for both.
Once you have everything installed go to your Facebook app on your Droid and clear cache and data and logout of your Facebook app. I know you will lose everything, but you will get it all back in just a moment along with NOTIFICATIONS!! Launch the BB simulator. Once the mock phone loads on your PC launch the Browser on the BB simulator and point it to facebook.com. It should give you a suggestion to download the app for Blackberry. Click the link and follow the instructions and in moments you will have the FB app on your BB. Once the app is done installing login with you credentials. Once you login accept all permissions. I even selected to remove email notifications within the BB Facebook app so I could see that it worked. I also made a status update just to see if FB in fact recognized my update and sure enough it said Facebook for Blackberry. If you have a physical BB you probably don't need to download the app so you could just skip that step.
Now go to Facebook.com from a PC and go to Account Settings. On the left hand side go to Notifications. Scroll down the page to where you see other Notifications. Click that and there you should see Facebook for BlackBerry® smartphones. Clear the checkbox and hit save, then add the check back to the box and hit save again. Now logout of FB for the BB sim and shutdown the sim. Go back to your droid and login to your FB app. Select whatever you prefer for syncing your contacts and then go to Settings and make sure that notifications are set to active(checked). The refresh interval has nothing to do with notifications, its just how often do you want the app to refresh the newsfeed in the background. I have mine set to never. Everything is now done and should be all set. Whatever you do, DO NOT DELETE THE Facebook for BlackBerry® smartphones application on Facebook or you will have to do this all over again.
Works like a charm. I now get notifications immediately for chat, comments, mentions, messages. They all come through perfectly. In most cases I get them faster than I do on the Browser for the PC.
If and when FB gives us another app update you may need reset the permissions for the notifications again. Just login from a PC and go back to your Account Settings ---> Notifications ---> Other Applications and uncheck the BB box and hit save recheck and hit save and all is well. I had to do that with the most recent update, but everything still works flawlessly.
I'll definitely give this a try!
Are you kidding?????????
In the Facebook app, I've set update rate to "Never" and ticked all the notification options and I do get push notifications fast and reliably for the last few months.
We don't need access to a BB.

You do need access to a BB. For some reason when using a BB to access your Facebook account activates push. Try it out. Either find a friend or use a simulator from my earlier post. As soon as I performed the following my push started working.

You just need to set the Refresh Interval to "Never" and Notifications to ON, in the Android app.
Your method is obsolete, not to mention inconvenient.

Sorry, but no, push does not work for alot of people, including myself (HTC Sensation). It seems that users that have never logged in on either an Iphone or BB experience the most problems. These 2 seem to add an option to your Facebook-account regarding push updates (see OP), which the Android version doesn't seem to do. For more users experiencing problems see http://www.facebook.com/android/posts/131145080279409 for example
I will try this option and let you know if it works!

Exactly. If you've had a BB or an iPhone then you probably won't have the issue. It does have something to do with a service that both the BB and the iPhone invoke. I have a sensation too and this method worked for me. Let me know what you come up with.

This combination of options (refresh Never - notifications On) is actually how you enable Push Notifications. Facebook stupidly enough didn't make it more clear in the app settings. Hence most of the confusion.
All I'm saying is I've never owned, used or logged in from an i or BB device and notifications come to my phone annoyingly fast and often!

Actually those are the settings that I have been using for quite sometime and it didn't matter until I logged into my account from a BB. Literally as soon as I did notifications just started rolling in. Trust me I have been trying to figure this out for the last 2 1/2 years I've had a Droid.
And I know I'm not alone as hundreds if not thousands of Droid users are posting here and all over the net on how to get FB push working. It wasn't until recently that I came across this thread on another site that pointed me in the right direction.

If I remember correctly when you launch the simulator it loads up just like if you actually powered a phone on. So it might take a while. Another option would be is to try a different simulator.
Which sim are you using?
Im using the storm 2 as i know it worked for you, its moved to the clock now so fingers crossed its loading slowly

I think I enabled wifi in the BB phone settings. Seems like that got internet working for me. Play with network settings of the Sim. Treat it as if you were using a real phone that is just not connected to a data plan.

I had the problem too when I had an Incredible. Friend of mine has an Evo and had the same problems.
Either way glad it worked!

Hi XDA's !
I made a quite simple, small and free app that will help you to fix the recent showed USSD/MMI vulnerability which affects many android devices.
For reference: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2-0B04HPhs
Most Samsung phones are fixed to data wipe (there's not reported MMI command for HTCs), but still MANY Android devices are vulnerable to MMI commands including PIN code change ones, that can block your SIM card, after executing MMI command for PIN change more than 10 times with wrong PIN (for example malicious URL with 10 frames with PIN change instruction).
Please follow the installation instructions below:
1. Check if your phone is vulnerable - open your mobile browser and navigate to: http://goo.gl/4IWgL (or use the barcode below)
2. If your phone is vulnerable you will see your IMEI number displayed.
This means that service MMI commands can be executed on your phone, when you visit a malicious web page. The MMI commands are service commands, and if you see the IMEI it doesn't mean that your phone is vulnerable to the Samsungs data wipe vulnerability. BUT an attacker can still block your SIM card issuing a MMI string to change your PIN code more than 10 times. Finally your SIM card will be blocked.
3. If DON'T see the IMEI number, you are safe and you don't need this app
4. If you see a popup with your IMEI number, then install this app from Google Play (click on install button on the the left).
5. Once you install the app navigate again to: http://goo.gl/4IWgL (or use the barcode below)
6. Your phone will ask you how to complete the action. Choose USSDFix and mark it as default for this action.
7. You will see a notification that your phone tries to open a page that contains a USSD call and will block it.
8. Your phone is safe now !

NOTE: The app uses a hidden launcher and will not appear in the list of the other apps on your phone desktop. If you want to remove the program, please navigate to Settings / Manage Applications and then remove "USSDfix" app.

First it handles calls from browser like "tel:", then it checks for * and %23 (#) in the dialed string.
Are the HTC's vulnerable too? and the Sense 4?
Unfortunately some HTC's are. You can test yours using the URL provided in the thread (or using the barcode scanner).

Tested the vulnerability with stock browser and dolphin on sense 4.1. Both times I got to see my IMEI.
Installed patch app, and now it works. Very clever how you did this. Thanks !!
Is anyone brave enough to test this on a real-wiping-all-the-data link?
thanks a lot I have a zte gingerbread and I cannot update to jellybean so my phone is vulnerable...I've found a similar app on market but it's incompatible, yours is totally good for my phone!!!thank you!

The problem is that if you open a malicious URL in your browser, the browser can send a USSD command tothe dialer to factory reset your phone.
I hope that they will fix this soon, but if you are vulnerable and cannot update your phone you are at risk.
well my sensation is a culprit of it too ..unfortunately
i tested the app and its working perfectly well ...so SENSATION USERS GO AHEAD AND USE THIS APP
BTW voted for PORTAL .... lot of people should know this vulnerability and the fix for it
and i request other users of this app to vote for portal (click the "Newsworthy Thread" present at top right corner of the thread title )
Edit: Btw I used the vulnerability of the xda app to thank you.. As I'm out of thanks for today lol

Hehe, yes, it's normal - see installation instructions - you should choose the USSDfix as default for this activity (since there's no official patch of the dialer).

see at the end you should kinda prevent browser to give control of using phone ...thats what this app does ..its like a firewall ..which checks the code before giving the command to the phone ..if you bypass the firewall itself ..how can you expect it to prevent using phone
its like you bought an anti-virus for your PC ...installed it ..but then DISABLED it ..and claiming it not working
get the point now ?

I have hundreds of files named RS_###.log in /data, all around 1000 Bytes.
They seem to be generated several times each day. Opening them produces a file with a bunch of numbers (pic)
I don't like it. It reminds me of the HTC logging debacle.
Can someone shed some light on this? My research came up fruitless.
Thank you

Unknown. I too had hundreds of them. I just did a batch delete.
I am running SlimRom's 4.2.2 Build 7 on the device atm, with lean kernel and crossbreeder.
Now, I literally have ~300 user apps on the phone, so my chance of tracking it down is slim to none, unless there is a 'file monitor' tool that can be used to historize what apps interact with what files (creating another .log file ). Is anyone aware of such a tool?
-t
That would be a good idea.
So no problems after batch delete? Do you do that weekly or something?
Batch delete rocked my system bad. I wouldn't advise that. Good thing I had a nandroid
I have 41 of them in my /data folder, all dated 2013/07/12. I didn't do anything special to the phone at all that week because we were on vacation, so I don't know what might have generated those files.

I have >200. Many from July 29. Not sure the significance of that date either.
Also surprised this thread isn't blowing up...
I've got a bunch of them too. Had two files created today, both with the same time. I checked the file properties and it shows the "owner" and "group" as camera, which is kinda scary. Makes me wonder what the camera is up to. My pictures are backed up to Google+, so I thought maybe it had something to do with that, but the oldest file was created on 7/30/13 and I've been backing up pictures a lot longer than that. I hate not knowing why these are being created.

Bump
I've Googled RS log every way I can think of. The only thing I could come up with is an rs debugging log, which, according to Google, has something to do with app development and should be turned off before an app is released. Unless it is a really popular app, I doubt all of us downloaded or updated the same app unless it was a Google app. They have released a bunch of updates lately: maps, play store, play services, hangouts, etc. And we all know all the updates worked perfectly! At least some of those apps use the camera, so that could tie in. Or maybe it had absolutely nothing to do with any of this and I just lost 5 minutes of my life typing this :sly:

OK, I think I may have something, but maybe someone else can try this to confirm it. Looks like it is Google Hangouts. Anytime i start a video call the file rs_0.log, rs_1.log, rs_11.log, are written too. Also there are files named cam_socket0 and cam_socket1 in /data. If I only use the front facing camera then cam_socket1 is written too. If I switch to the rear camera then cam_socket0 gets written to also. I've made 4 video calls this morning just to try it, every time I would then check the file properties and the access date and time matched when I made the call. I'm assuming it is renaming all the log files so that rs_0 is always the latest. If someone else can confirm this that would be great.

Hmm... Well... I'm still thinking it has something to do with apps interacting with the camera. But chasing it/them down may be difficult. I just get worried about the camera being used without me knowing it.

or the feds remotely switching your phone mic and camera. That was in the news the other day.
On another note, I just reflashed a clean install and haven't taken any pictures yet. ALSO...no RS log files yet. You may be on to something my friend...
Lol, well if it's the feds I'll have to give them some special pics! I'm probably already on some watch list anyway, so what the heck.
I took some pictures and it didn't change the rs log, so I'm thinking it is other apps accessing the camera. I know it happens with hangouts but there maybe more. I'm guessing it's something of google's and probably fairly harmless, but would still like to know.

Speaking of "still," I'm "still" baffled by why nobody else has brought this up........
I've seen these too. No idea what causes them. They can get quite numerous.
I just use:
Code:
rm -Rf /data/RS_*.log
They don't seem to cause any problems, but I still wonder what the heck they are.

I did 2 video calls through Hangouts last night and I still have just the files from July 12. The cam_socket files were created at about the time of the calls though.
