As several people have experienced, when upgrading their HTC One S to the 4.0.4 update, FoxFi (wireless hotspot program that doesn't require root) has experienced some issues. It works and works well, but when the screen times out, it stops transferring data to the connected device. Keeping the screen from turning off is NOT a permanent solution, so I am asking for suggestions and/or proven solutions to this issue.
HOWEVER! There are some restrictions for the solutions I want to see:
-Do not want to require rooting the phone or flashing a ROM. I consider that the easy way out.
-Do not want to downgrade to the previous version. The update does have some nice advantages that I like. Also would be an easy way out.
So if you have any settings that I should be looking at, or software that could be working in the background that might cause it, I'm all ears. If T-Mobile/HTC release a patch, I'll download it.
So.... any ideas?
You can't downgrade from 4.0.4, or for that fact any software update, you can't downgrade. It's one of the consequences of being on T-Mobile 4.0.4 update.
I don't think there's a way, apart from connecting your phone to your computer via usb, and selecting "stay awake" mode.

Well, the WiFi works fine until the screen turns off. I can keep the screen from turning off so that's not a big deal.
And I included mention of a downgrade just because I wanted to head off anyone trying to suggest that.
I'm not giving up on this. There's either a setting that the phone defaults back to, or a patch that should update this.

I agree with you that there has to be away to get it working again. The other 2 recent radios out of Europe exhibited this same behavior on AOSP based roms. However, it behaved correctly on Sense based roms ie. Stock or Viper rom.
I think the easiest way to get the functionally back is to flash on Viper Rom and test if it works there. If it does then T-mobile just screwed up their rom or did it on purpose. If it doesn't work then that opens up a whole other issue.
I'm not about to flash my phone in specific (It's my primary phone and I can't afford to have it out of comission if I make a mistake), but if someone can provide that information it would be useful.
yeah this is a very odd problem with foxfi...I wonder how it shuts off the connection when the screen turns off. also why were you guys using foxfi before if you could just add a new apn and the hotspot worked fine? Now the new apn method does not work after the update though.

Yes FoxFi worked correctly on 4.03, there is a hitch to the data shuttng off once the screen cuts off. If you are say watching netflix with a constant data draw from the one s, the screen can tun off and you'll still be tethered, but once the constant data draw stops so does the data until screen comes back on.
You guys doing something special to connect with foxfi? I can connect to my phone when I turn it on, but the computer I'm trying to tether to always says no Internet. I can live with the screen time out, but I can't get it to work at all sense the update.
Edit: I can't connect to Foxfi at all from my computer.
Edit2: I uninstalled And reinstalled foxfi, now it's working!
I have a similar problem, ie. not related specifically to tethering but in general to wifi stopping working with screen off.
I opened up terminal emulator, chose menu>activate wake lock and voilà! Everything's working fine for me now! :good:
Try it out and hit thanks if helped!

For me data still stops while tethered when screen goes off unless it's a constant data pull.
Go to settings tap WiFi open menu go to advanced select keep WiFi on during sleep and set it to always let me know if this works

FoxFi never required the new APN method to work previously. In 4.0.3, I never even heard of the new APN method, but still got it to work.

I've tried that as well. To be sure, I tried turning it off and back on again, and it doesn't seem to have an effect on the connection.

Well, on the HTC One S I could just set the screen to not time out. that seems to accomplish the same goal, would it not?
Yeah you can do that.
Mine works ok too while the screen is on.
But while the screen is on it is taking much more power to a process that already takes alot of power from the phone.

well since foxfi turns on wifi to do the wifi hotspot, then maybe it is related to this problem. do you have to root your phone to open up a terminal emulator or did you just have to download a terminal emulator app to do that?

yeah...adding a new APN worked with the built-in hotspot so no extra apps were even needed to use the hotspot. That method worked on the Amaze and then on the One S before the 4.04 update.

Nope, root is not required. Just download "android terminal emulator" from the play store and choose wake lock from the menu. There is also wifi lock if you wanna try. Wake lock is sufficient for me though.
Yeah I tried using the take wake lock option in terminal emu on t-mo us one s and it won't work still even with that being on.

Well, I'm assuming that wakelock would keep the screen on. I don't know if it would do anything else.

Hey there,
I'm having a weird issue with my stock Nexus S. I've tried a few custom roms, but after realizing that I was better off with stock, I flashed stock again... Now, I've noticed that sometimes, with the WiFi off, I would receive emails and Google+ notifications! It turns out that my wifi is turning on and off, and I don't know how!
I don't have, to my knowledge, installed a program that controls wifi(if you want, I can post my list of apps).
So, what's happening here? Anyone has any idea?
Thanks

You have the same issue? Can you post your list of installed apps? I seriously don't know what's going on!
This may seem really obvious - but have you double-checked that those notifications aren't coming in via your mobile network?
If you have Juice Defender (or something similar) installed, that might also be responsible for switching on your wifi periodically.

Nothing like that... I was just activating my alarm clock for tomorrow and the wifi came on, out of thin air! It shutdown in less than a second, too! And I did absolutely nothing!
Also, I don't have any app like Juice Defender
Ok, so I've flashed the stock rom, locked the bootloader, etc, and I thought I had solved the problem. I didn't, the thing keeps turning on and off!!
I'm seriously thinking about sending it for repairs
you could send it in to samsung or install some newer 2.3.5 kernels which seemed to solve any wifi issues i may have had. Android 2.3.5 made some changes to wifi signal strenght.

I have stock, and it's the regular nexus S, not the 4G one (so I haven't received 2.3.5 yet).
I'll try installing the 2.3.5 kernels and report back
check your advanced wifi settings.
by default they are set to turn wifi off when screen is off. so even if you have wifi on it will turn off when screen is off automatically.
menu>settings>wireless and network settings>wi-fi settings>menu(softkey)>advanced>wifi sleep policy>check the "never" radio button.

While I am still know to this phone I did find a small trick that may be able to help others. At my job I am in the basement with not single at all but we have a WiFi set up here so I can still serf. One thing I found is if I trun it on to airplain mode and then click on the wifi it stops the phone from looking for single but I can still use the wifi like normal. This saves alot of battey power as it seems to use more when you are not in range then when you are but I can still use the wifi.
Just turn on airplain mode and then turn on the wifi and it works well.

Not on my Infuse. I get a 'not connected' error and can't install or update apps.
Has anyone else experienced this? The update downloaded and installed just fine. All apps seem to run fine, just cannot connect to my wifi network. In fact it doesn't seem to even see any networks.
I did not have my device activated for a Verizon Data Plan, and when I try and go through the "Activate Device" process that fails as well.
Thanks

Which update did you apply, was it an OTA update or one you found someplace else either on XDA or grabbed from the web?
As far as I know the only working update for a 3g Xoom is going out OTA to testers, and no one has grabbed a link for the zip install, so what did you install?

I installed the OTA using the trick to stop Google Framework Services and force the update check.
Before I have you go and do a whole bunch of crazy stuff, let me ask the simple question...have you rebooted your tablet and tried WiFi again?
Also, just so I understand the exact problem, is it that WiFi won't turn on, or is it that it does turn on but just doesn't find any WiFi networks?
Seems okay here. Unrooted and relocked and manually applied updates one by one.

It's that it doesn't find any networks.
EDIT: works now, for some reason after the update wifi was set to 5GHz only and couldn't find any networks. Setting it to Auto resolves the issue. Strangely also the Verizon 3g works now as well.
Thanks for the responses.
wifi not working after Jelly Bean update
My Xoom tablet (Wi-Fi only) just got an OTA update to Jelly Bean.
The Wi-Fi network has stopped working. The network is found and shows as "saved". If I tell the tablet to forget the connection, it will re-save it but it will not process the "connect" command. I am trying to connect to an open hotel network while on business travel. I was connected to this network during the upgrade but now I can't reconnect. I've rebooted and it doesn't do anything different.
Also, when the tablet boots, it still displays the ICS splash screens but after it boots, it has all the new Jelly Bean features.
I am currently unable to use the tablet at all for networking since it does not have any cellular capability.
What now????
=========
UPDATE: After sitting with Wi-Fi turned off and sleeping for about 20 minutes, the Wi-Fi now is working. I didn't touch anything. Previously, it wouldn't load the network and I rebooted it at least 4 times. Weird. but now it's working so I'm happy...
It was working fine yesterday, as I am on the no sympathy rom. Today, it is having problems. I downloaded several different tethering programs and none worked. Any suggestions?

Well there are several things you could try.
1. Make sure you have data coverage where you currently are (And that their isn't any temporary data outages/local network issues).
2. Try a simple reboot and if that doesn't work do a battery pull.
3. Clear any defaults and cache for any tethering apps you downloaded.
4. Make sure you havent accidentally changed any of your settings from when things where working for you

My tethering goes in and out as well. For no reason, no settings will change and then it just wont work. I haven't completely 100% trouble shot it, but so far it seems force closing the tethering app and then starting again will make it work. Then some days it just doesn't want to work for me.
I'm on Synergy(though it's done it on every rom and even when I had my Droid X it did it then) and my phone's data connection is fine - I can browse the internet fine with it but it just won't be recognized by my computer at times.(won't even see it in the list of avail connections)

I can work on wifi just fine on my phone. It looked as if i wasn't getting a default gateway from the connection when looking at the connection on my PC.
I could not get any FoxFi to work on my S3 (still not rooted) at all. WiFi would come up, and I could connect, but could not get any internet connectivity at all. Using a toggle widget method to enable the stock WiFi hotspot (and bypass the VZW service check) works perfectly fine for me, however. Sorry, can't speak for any other root required tether apps.
I've been running CM10 on my HOXL for a while, but I noticed today that I couldn't connect to the wifi hotspot I set up on it.
I've been able to in the past so for the last few hours I've been trying every combination to achieve a working result like it was previously:
tried connecting to hotspot from several devices - none work
tried rebooting ALL devices (including phone) - still can't connect
I can connect to it as long as it's an open network, but this is no good as I want to keep the security on the hotspot
I can tether via bluetooth or I can tether using an app - but I don't want this, I want my wifi hotspot back
I've reflashed from fresh wipe - still can't connect if hotspot has a password
tried both security settings, neither let me connect (but again, open is fine)
I've reflashed back to the stock ROM (Telstra Clean ROM anyway) - this actually works, let's me connect via wifi hotspot with security
flashed back to CM10 afterwards - wifi hotspot doesn't work again.
So basically I can't connect to my wiFi hotspot if it has security applied, while my phone is running CM10 (nightlies)
Anyone share this problem / have any more suggestions to try?

Yup, been through there and can't find anything (at least through the few dozen pages I've skimmed). Odd thing is it WAS working up until yesterday with the ROM, now it's stopped working. I tried reverting back to an earlier ROM as well, no dice.
I can't post in the thread to ask directly in there either.
Have you been flashing nightlies? The latest updates have been generating new Mac address for your phone when you flash. Its cause several problems. I had to change my router to wepkey access only. Cause I have Mac filters on my router. Not sure if that helps. Good luck though.

Yeah, I read that too. But my phone CONNECTS to wifi fine, the wifi is WORKING fine.
The problem is when I am trying to set it up as a hotspot that the issues are occurring.
To reiterate: it's only when I have security set on for the hotspot that I can't connect to it. (But having an open hotspot is not suitable)

I have the same issue running cm10 so you are not alone. For as often as I use it though its not an issue for me. The chances of someone jumping on to an open AP I roll for 10 minutes is slim. In the end remember, this is a rom still under nightly development so turbulence is to be expected.

I'm used to the turbulence. I was rocking ICS on my Desire which was, buggy at the best of times, but I was pretty tolerant of it.
Have another ROM running on my Nexus7 as well.
Other than this the CM10 ROM is incredible! I'd love to be able to run the hotspot open, but I know it's get milked by everyone around me... I appreciate everyone's help so far, I'll keep asking around and trying different options.
I find it odd it's not happening for everyone, that it's only started happening recently for me (probably after I briefly tried paranoid android on the device, before returning to CM nightlies), and that it works fine again if I use the stock sense ROM (yuck.)

Last radio I flashed was this:
EVITA_Telstra_2.40_Radio_0.20os.32.09.15_10.113.32.28L
I *DO* have good LTE where I am, so I would LIKE to be able to use it...
Cue dumb question: I flash the ROM then flash the radio yeah?
Well, it woul;ld appear I'm not the only person facing this issue at the moment either.
Also appears that CM10 nightly might be having trouble flashing radios... stay tuned.
Exactly the same problem here. Have been dirty flashing the currently CM10 nightly every couple of days and as of 7/10 hotspot (with password) and usb tethering have been broken. Hotspot works fine without security though.. Flashed back to 2/10 and it's working fine, just have to put up with glitchy graphics a while longer
Yup you're right, I flashed back to 10/2 - hotspot works with security just fine.
How often are you checking the updates to see if the wifi hotspot works with security again?
Looks like it's all fixed with the 12 Oct nightly
