Replacing the screen - AT&T, Rogers HTC One X, Telstra One XL

Wasn't sure where else to post this, but I have the opportunity to buy a tegra 3 model one X for cheap, due to a broken screen/digitizer, and have the S4 ATT variant. I've searched a few threads and couldn't find anything about possibly switching the screens in the two and if they are even compatible. If there is another thread on this, awesome but otherwise can someone give me a technical reference as to whether this is even possible or not. I'd lovvvve to use the tegra model since I'm on T-Mobile anyway and 4G/LTE are irrelevant

It is possible since the phones are the same size and everything, just the processor is different. The problem is the screen repair is extremely difficult according to many people, and it most likely will need to be sent to a professional to be done properly (no raised edges, properly set, etc.). The cost of repair from HTC is ~$300.

Okay that was concern number 2) Is it even worth the attempt? I'm sure as hell not going to drop another 300 on fixing it if I have the potential to do it myself. And it would be a swap of only the LCD/digitizer as one piece. But thanks for answering my question. Just wanted to be sure before dropping the cash

There are several other threads on this topic already. The screen/digitizers are being sold as different part depending on Tegra3 or Snapdragon S4 versions. So it seems there may be differences between the two. You can search for the other threads for more discussion on this.
As already mentioned, its not an easy repair. Taking the phone apart, and installing the screen is much more difficult than other phones, due to the polycarbonate unibody design. Even pro repair shops are having problems doing the repair, and there has been a report of a shop messing up the repair, damaging the outside of the phone, and getting glue all over it when disassembling and re-assembling.
Is their something wrong with your S4? If not, I would leave it alone. You're likely going to mess up both phones trying to Frankenstein something together, and its not worth it.

If your switching screens from one phone to the other it's pretty simple since the digitizer and LCD don't need to be removed from the screen frame... just swap the frames. If your comfortable with it.

If I remember right, the S4 version is .4 mm longer than the international versions which, if you've noticed some cases out there, causes the cases to be misaligned.
This SMALL length difference causes the screens to be slightly different as well. now, I could be wrong. But I do believe reading somewhere that the screens were NOT compatible between the Tegra3 and S4 versions due to that incredibly minute difference.

Yes, if they differ at all I would not swap them at all....new LCD/digitizer assemblies are $80 on amazon from u.s. resellers

Okay, all phenomenal input, thanks. I'm just going to sit tight with my S4 version. It's just this lack of root is making me try anything

Might trade my SGS3 for an LG Intuition, bad idea?

So im in the talks of trading my SGS3 for an Intuition. I'm curious to see how that phone would be on a daily basis. But im afraid I'll regret the decision. I know this forum will be based. But im reaching out to my fellow XDA addicts for their input.
Let me know what you think about it.

I've really been looking at doing the same. It's hard to get decent opinions because most people say it's bad but have never even seen one irl. One of the big problems I have is it will probably never see a custom rom besides root. It's also a rather old phone but it can still play pretty much any game and handle anything. I played with one at verizon and it had some lag but I'm not sure if it's the launcher or not. Kinda bugs me also because I know I'll lose the stylus and it's just a normal stylus you can buy off amazon for like $2 (nothing like a s pen). I will probably buy one to try it, I can see myself possibly loving it or totally hating it, I doubt there a a middle ground.

Same here. I've only played with one in verizon. I'm just afraid of the width hindering it in my daily use. That includes fitting comfortably in my back pocket.

Well I've never broken a phone and I've always done that since my first smartphone. The Palm Treo 755p. Lol. I'm more careful with my phones and now that phones are getting bigger and bigger you don't feel them as much when you carry them in the back pocket because it just feels like a wallet or something.

If you're into getting a bigger phone, I would hold for the Galaxy Note II. It's coming to Verizon, and is likely to see custom roms. I highly doubt the Intuition will see much. The phone seems solid, but LG has lately had problems with keeping up on Android updates (I'm looking at you, Spectrum). Samsung, while not perfect, shows more promise in rolling out updates.

Yea I'm really thinking about the note 2 as well but the format of the intuition makes it awesome for emails, Internet, pdfs ect. The only only place it lacks is watching videos, and it's S3 cpu which is like 2 years old already I just ask myself how often do I watch videos on my phone, not a ton how often do I email look up things on the Web? Probably 200+ times a day.
I probably still won't get it but I'd love to see them make one (and release it in the us) with better specs and fore thought across the board and I'd be on it

THANK YOU! At least one person said it.... If you cannot do anything to a phone besides rooting it then it won't be in my hands.... I have to have full control so I can optimize every aspect of my phone cause we all know the manufacturers won't and Verizon DEFINITELY won't! The LG is a pretty giant leap back so I would wait for the Note 2 or the possibility of another Nexus device but def do not go backwards... (Just my opinion)
If you don't really care about ever using a custom ROM then go ahead. Otherwise I believe the SGS3 has it beat in every category.
I wouldn't. The single biggest problem with the phone is the aspect ratio. Every single review points out how awkward the phone is with a 4:3 ratio.
I would NOT do it.
If you want a phablet, wait for the Note 2. I highly doubt many devs will work on the intuition. You'd get better development off the droid x2.

Is LG considered a top brand now like Samsung or HTC, or are they still playing around in Huwai level standards?
What are their flagship devices - are they still just knock-offs of font runners or do they have their own developments as contenders?

Well, looks like people will have to reconsider seeing as the next Nexus is made by LG.
Samsung Galaxy S3
Intuition has terrible battery life and an even worse camera. I do like the design but there's absolutely no way I'd trade my S3 for one. I'm also waiting on a phablet worthy of ditching my S3. Going to be the Note II probably. Not to mention Samsung has a ton of great tablet/s-pen features that can't be found elsewhere. One last thing is the stylus has no built in holder. You have to carry it separately. Deal breaker right there for me.

I just want to know battery stats since here in the philippines, we don't often use mobile data unlike countries which they use 3g and 4g.. another question is, HTC One X+ came out a week or two, do you feel the need to upgrade? Since it's really a great phone.. and may probably tie or beat the battery life of our One S, considering it has a bigger display and uses slcd-2..

:: puts hand up! :: Bought mine thru Widget City for 21k, since they were the only "semi-reputable" seller of S4 version months ago. Battery life is modest at best, that's why I bought a car charger and a slow charger for use at work. Perfectly happy with it (Black MAO) but had 2nd thoughts that I should have gotten the Blue/Grey instead,as the black is slippery to the touch. Had to get a capdase casing from Greenhills to make it bearable to hold and not be afraid of the phone falling. The 64gb white S would have been nice, but am not a power user anyways.

Chipping-wise, only in the charger slot,as I tend to mishoot the cable, but surprisingly, no chipping elsewhere ( I was prepared for this before getting the black one) I did my homework to make sure I got an S4 version, tooke about 2 months of persistent buffering stores and even HTC sales agents until I found the S4. Widget City is legit, but has the most terrible customer service for an online store (Kimstore is the best) but had to bear it as only they have the best price and the only one to carry the S4 version.

Just like mine.. the only chip i had is inside the usb port as it is inevitable that the usb tip will not touch around the usb port.. elsewhere, i don't have any chipping issues. And like you, i researched through almost all possible sources to make sure i'll get the s4 and the batch of HOS not affected with the chipping issue. May i ask again, what is the first 6 digit of your serial number? Mine is SH24KW, as it is one of the basis if your One S is affected with the issue..
You use an otterbox? Does it really add bulkiness to the phone? My friend bought a commuter for his One X, and it's really bulky..
How does widget city be terrible in costumer service? Yup, i also inquired there and ask if it was really an s4 they are selling.. they even said the model name (z520e) when i ask them to check the box.. from there, i knew that i would be getting the s4 but i really couldn't imagine why they sell that for just 21k or less..
Well, enough for the regrets, i'm satisfied with the HOS.. but the release of the HOX+ makes me think to upgrade to it.. what are your insights? Hehe.

SH23KW. I use a Capdase casing and it barely adds volume (read my initial post). I took choose HOS primarily for 3 things: processing power, form factor and ease of use with one hand. Think of what is essential for you, and if majority of those leads to HOS+, then consider it.

Odd.. have you read the Micro Arc Oxidation Failure topic here at our One S Forum? Seems like you are one of the exemption that didn't have the chipping in spite of having a SH23 s/n.. in the topic, almost all SH23 owners suffer from chipping which is said to be the first batches of the HOS, while SH24 and SH25 are the "fixed" batches regarding the MAO chipping.. i guess you were very lucky with your One S.
Yes, that were also my considerations before i bought the HOS, ease of use, top of the line processor and it's build quality. I would've bought the One X+ if it was already available when i was only deciding what to choose.. i didn't choose the One X because of short battery life, overheating issues, the camera lens is very vulnerable to scratches and it's a huge phone compared to our One S, but with the promising and superb specs of the One X+, i think i can live with a bigger phone, now that all my concerns with the One X is now solved with the One X+, i really don't know if i would upgrade..

Hi!
I just bought my One S yesterday. It's black. Unfortunately, I found out about the S4 vs S3 debacle too late and found out just today, that I have the S3 version. I plan on going back to the HTC Concept Store at SM City Cebu to demand an exchange, as the dumb phones they had on display with spec sheets clearly say Snappdragon 4! I bought this phone for speed and to find out later that I got a "crippled" version with the S3 chip for an S4 price is downright fraud for me.
Well, wish me luck. :good:
BTW, did you guys get the 4.0.4 OTA update? I'm not seeing any. Stuck at 4.0.3. Maybe another issue with this "disappointing" S3 version.

I also saw here at SM Fairview last week, that they are selling the black version of the One S, but they didn't say that it has the s3 or the s4 chip. I inspected it, and comparing to mine, external features is really identical, but when i compare the speeds in opening some apps like the camera, gallery, messages, contacts, the app drawer, settings and other, it's really noticeable that my One s4 is faster compared with the s3 version, but i didn't stop there.. i logged on my gmail to the One S they are selling and downloaded quadrant to check it's system info, and from there, i saw that the product name is villec2, msm8260, 1784 MHz and adreno 220. It clearly states that the one they are selling is the s3 version.. i then run full benchmark on my HOS and the one they are selling, my HOS finished first, then i got a score of 5200+ while theirs only scored 4k+.. so it's really an s3. I hope you could get a replacement and get the s4 variant.. as the s3 is not that great as the s4.. about the 4.0.4 update, yes i already updated to that since the 2nd week of october.. i guess the update for the s3 rolled out last november's first week? I'm afraid if the One S got its JB update, the s4 variant would be the first to get it, and a month or two before for the s3 one.. but in the first place, i hope we'll have a JB update. Hehe

[Q] How to choose my One S ? (Should I ??)

Hi guys,
I’ve been a HTC user for years now, starting with the Hero and then the Wildfire S and I want to go a step further with my next androphone.
I was thinking about the Nexus 4 but I am a bit frustrated by the no-stock issues and, well, I’ve been happy enough with HTC so...
I met the One S, went through several tests and was quite interested until I read comments about “Helicoptering”, S3 ship instead of S4, black version easily scratched…
So, I am asking you two things:
- Should I go for it anyway? Your campaign concerning the Helicoptering was pretty efficient, I feel really unsure about this phone!
- What should I carefully look for when buying it? Any serial number to prefer or to avoid?
Thanks for your help!

Go for it is what I would say, if you get the helicoptering issue then just send it back to HTC to hopefully fix it or replace it, but you'll never know till you get one, I've mostly heard this about certain roms, haven't yet heard this on stock non rooted phones.
As for your second question it really depends on where you live if your in the US then you should get an s4 chip because thats all that tmobile over here in the US uses now a days and they do have a black version and a gradient blue but if you like the black one then get it, they wouldnt put it back up for sale for a limited time if they didn't fix the paint chipping but I'm stuck with the gradient blue, anywhere outside the US grounds switched to s3 chips so be careful as there aren't too many roms to try as the s4....hopefully this answers your questions and should you have any other questions feel free to ask

Thanks for the quick answer !
I'm a bit suprised by your first answer, I thaught it was a hardware issue and not a software one... Do you mean that if I never root my phone, I won't face this issue ?
I'm living in Germany so I assume it will be S3 for me...
It is a hardware issue. It gets worse with time.
Apparently the helicopter home thingy is resolved in devices with serial number >=ht24.
If you can get an S4, get it. The S3 is inferior in every way. I'd even recommend you to import one rather than getting an S3...
I got the black/grey european S4, and I cant say Ive noticed any scratches. Not more than my blade and tablets got in their first weeks as well anyway.
So, what you want is a One S in a box with the following information: Model: Z520 (mine ends with 'e', guess thats for europe), CPU: 1.5Ghz, dual dore S/N: First 2 digits 24 or higher.

Is this true? Does it really cost 11US with free shipping to my countery as it says? If this is no scam, than it's a miracle!
I heavily doubt its liability . I suggest you to not buy it .
Idk I am going to try to buy it or maybe any other phone in this list you see how cheap they are and getting selled by difficult sellers! http://www.aliexpress.com/wholesale...&CatId=5090301&SortType=price_asc&needQuery=y

Do not . It's a Chinese make and I am sure it won't have the given specs and no warranty either .

However this one for example: http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Free...-RAM-4GB-ROM-Wi-Fi-GPS-android/737659767.html
The price is very cheap and I also red the sellers feedback and most of them were positive, also googled the sellers company and it doesn't seem to be fake. Right?
Or this one http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Smal...dual-male-women-s-mobile-phone/730872155.html
Love quad-core phones btw.
I picked up two from the same seller. One HTC 8X lookalike and the one you linked.
Hey, if they are half decent I'll rip them apart and do something cool.
I don't think that its true. Or just looks to good to be true. Sorry

Thank you! For gods sake BUY A GOOD PHONE, not a cheap chinese brick. At least get a decent phone that could actually work.

Bulk cost of the phone's parts don't always set the price. OP's link could possibly be a liquidation of assets, the already low cost of the phones themselves (probably parts cost of around $30-40, assuming they are using rockchip or allwinner chipsets) would need to be cut down if they need to move product to make room for new stuff.
more importantly, Alibaba/ Aliexpress is fairly risk-free for the buyer.
Description says dual core where title says quad. This is probably a dual core rock chip with a quad Mali GPU like most Android TV Sticks. Screen is 800x480 on a 4.4"... but supposedly has Bluetooth.
I've been around the block with these Chinese products and while it may work, expect a slow and buggy experience. I'm sure it won't support all the needed cell frequencies and dropping connections left and right. For $11 though it may be fun to just play with. Looks like the default OS is MIUI which is kinda cool.
Expect lots of Chinese apps and without root... Your stuck with them.

looks fishy, dont know if it's fake.

[Q] swapping lcds across models?

Hello,
Has anyone successfully swapped lcds with a different phone model?
For example, could I replace a cracked Relay's screen with one from a Blaze or other similar model?
The few replacement Relay screens I've seen for sale are too expensive for me, so I'm exploring cheaper options.
Any information or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
~Loki
I really doubt this is possible as even if it were to fit and connected the same you would still need the proper drivers. In truth I have never seen a phone that you can swap LCDs with another
Sorry for the bad news
